Lets take a personality test!
One of my favorite topics in Psychology is personality and there happens to be a very good Five Factor test that is free to the public domain with all 3,000+ items available for download. Some notes about the IPIP NEO-PI:
Purpose of this On-Line Inventory
- The primary purpose of this on line inventory is to educate the public about the five factor model of personality.
- More specifically, the report explains the likely consequences of one's standing on five broad personality domains.
- These broad domains cover normal differences in personality that should be obvious to people who know you well.
- Secondarily, this inventory estimates your standing on the 5 broad domains and 30 subdomains of personality.
- The inventory does not reveal hidden, secret information about you nor does it assess serious psychological disorders.
- The report is designed to be objective, not pleasing or flattering.
- Measurement error, misunderstandings, carelessness, and mischievous responding can invalidate the report.
- If knowledgeable acquaintances disagree with the test results, then the results are wrong.

More about the International Personality Item Pool:
Here are what the different facets mean:
Extraversion Facets
Agreeableness Facets
Conscientiousness Facets
Neuroticism Facets
Openness Facets
Edit: I think I might take it again. I was hesitant to place myself at any extreme throughout the test. This probably made my results less accurate than they should have been. Anyone else experience this?
I took the long version.

Some thoughts:
Fun test!
It looks like your levels of liberalism is on the lower end of what I have seen so far in the comments, would you say the test is accurate in that regards?
Not to put you on the spot, but I would definitely be interested to see if you have any examples or perspectives of things where this trait can be contrasted in real life and online!
Yeah, that's pretty accurate. I am a practicing Catholic, and a fan of the US constitution. Not necessarily a fan of the USA's actions all the time, nor am I in any way pleased with our current president; I'd consider myself center-right.
Thanks for the response!
That makes sense!
In fairness, the test makes a point of noting that psychological liberalism isn't necessarily the same as political liberalism.
Oh I know, I'm really curious on the preference of security/stability brought by conformity or tradition.
I rated highly on the scale and I know I am one of the first to challenge rules and not really care too much about tradition.
So really I'm wanting to see if they have any examples so I can better understand what it looks and feels like from their perspective.

Lol I'm an awful person who also is neurotic and got a 99% in "anxiety" and "depression." Truuu
Mine was about exactly yours. Super low on Extraversion super high on Neuroticism. Pretty average on the rest.
I'm not crazy! I swear!
I took the short one, and tried to not overthink any of the questions. Just went with my gut.
I agree with just about all of this, although I disagree on a couple points. I'll be taking the long one this evening, and will spend more time on the questions. I'll edit the tables to include the numbers from that once I've done it. I think it would be interesting to see the difference between the two.
Took me a minute to get some nice formatting in here.
Thoughts
My immoderation score is high mainly because I like food (too much). When it comes to pretty much everything else in my life that is pleasure-seeking, I'm pretty moderate.
I agree with pretty much everything else though. Which makes sense, as this is basically just putting how you view yourself into words/numbers.
There's an issue for that, go give it a thumbs up if you haven't already ;)
So I took the long test.

I agree on all of this, although I did have to reread what they mean by 'Morality'.
I do believe that there's a level of deception that is present in almost all relationships of any kind. I don't think all deception is negative, just that it exists as a byproduct. If you fancy a person, you want them to see your best 'you'. And I definitely don't want strangers or even certain friends to see part of my life.
You may be interested in the concept of self-monitoring!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-monitoring?wprov=sfla1
I would bet there is overlap between the personality facet of morality and levels of self-monitoring.
Oh I agree whole heartedly, and this is something that I do consciously. There's no need for me to show any indication that I enjoy partying to my coworkers, no need for my non-tech friends to hear me rant about the latest tech news, and no need for my family to see chunks of my personal life. This just seems like common sense.
Though my abstraction of relationships goes a bit farther. My view of relationships is that there is something that I bring to the table that makes the other member feel something positive. Maybe I listen better than their other friends when talking about relationships, maybe they don't have other tech friends, maybe it's because I know just what questions to ask to make them think. And theoretically, they bring something positive to my life. In the best relationships, the same thing stimulates and improves happiness for both parties. But in a situation where it doesn't, it turns into "I do this for you so you'll stay and be/do X for me."
For instance, I have a friend where physical touch isn't taboo. I know that he gets easily distracted and needs multiple inputs in order to be fully entertained. So if I'm doing something like helping roommate preparing dinner, I'll take the breaks between helping to do things like scratch behind his ears. I know he enjoys it, it doesn't cost me anything (besides a moment of my time and a hand wash), and it keeps him entertained. And if he's entertained, he'll be happier about staying in the house until I'm done with dinner. And if he's happier, he'll be more willing to talk longer and do it again another day. I see this as second nature and I see everyone doing it. But when I bring it up to some people, they act appalled that I see it this way.
This is very wholesome and exhibits some pretty strong empathy. The world needs more people like you!
I.. Have honestly never thought of it that way. I've always thought logic = cold. I guess it is empathetic and wholesome, even though I do nice things for people so they'll do nice things for me?
If I had to take a guess, I would say that this occurrence is pretty rare considering the huge amounts of interactions we have on a daily basis.
I think it only become unwholesome when this is used as a means to an end where once you have received what you wanted, you cut the empathy line.
We all have things we want and desire, there is no doubt about it, but if the interactions you have with others gives them something they want or a need met, you are going about it much better than directly taking it.
There is a book by Adam Grant called Give and Take where he talks about three different reciprocity styles:
I would day your reciprocity style matches the Matchers which is definitely not an inherently bad thing.
Here is a short TED talk where Grant talks more in depth about these three types:
https://youtu.be/YyXRYgjQXX0
I can't provide one single academic source since Grant consolidates a lot of organizational psychogy research into his books to make it more easily digestible to lay people, nonetheless, it's a very good read and listen.
I'd say calling me a Matcher in the given situation sounds right. I'll have to take a look at that TED talk when I'm able.
There are definite times where I behave like a Giver, but even those I tend to rationalize as 'giving energy and not expecting any makes me feel good because I'm being selfless'. Most people just hear me talk about how I purposefully 'manipulate' people to make them feel good around me and jump down my throat about how bad it is to manipulate, despite the fact that they do it without thinking.
Thank you for the resources and interesting perspective!
Interesting results... I tend to view these kinds of tests in the same light as horoscopes, but they're fun to take every once in a while. If nothing else they're a good way to look at how you view yourself.

This test should be more accurate than a horoscope as it's reliability and validity are pretty good amongst other psychology personality assessments
The big one to watch out for is the MBTI. It's definitely the one that is the biggest headache for the psychology field because so many businesses use it for personnel decisions.
Here is a blog post from an organizational psychologist that talks about the issues:
https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3947014
As you can read, the MBTI is the horoscope of the personality test.
But I will also say there is debate on the effectiveness of measuring personality through surveys rather than behavioral observations, what does it really mean to fall within the different facets, and how personality can change based on environmental factors. It's definitely not an exact science but there is an ove consensus that the Five Factor Model is a de-facto valid model of personality traits.
I enjoyed reading your results because you ended up getting almost the exact opposite of my results.
Alright, let's go. This was the long test.

A Note on the scores and interpretation:
This report compares NubWizard from the country USA to other adult men.
This report estimates the individual's level on each of the five broad personality domains of the Five-Factor Model. The description of each one of the five broad domains is followed by a more detailed description of personality according to the six subdomains that comprise each domain.
A note on terminology. Personality traits describe, relative to other people, the frequency or intensity of a person's feelings, thoughts, or behaviors. Possession of a trait is therefore a matter of degree. We might describe two individuals as extraverts, but still see one as more extraverted than the other. This report uses expressions such as "extravert" or "high in extraversion" to describe someone who is likely to be seen by others as relatively extraverted. The computer program that generates this report classifies you as low, average, or high in a trait according to whether your score is approximately in the lowest 30%, middle 40%, or highest 30% of scores obtained by people of your sex and roughly your age. Your numerical scores are reported and graphed as percentile estimates. For example, a score of "60" means that your level on that trait is estimated to be higher than 60% of persons of your sex and age.
Please keep in mind that "low," "average," and "high" scores on a personality test are neither absolutely good nor bad. A particular level on any trait will probably be neutral or irrelevant for a great many activities, be helpful for accomplishing some things, and detrimental for accomplishing other things. As with any personality inventory, scores and descriptions can only approximate an individual's actual personality. High and low score descriptions are usually accurate, but average scores close to the low or high boundaries might misclassify you as only average. On each set of six subdomain scales it is somewhat uncommon but certainly possible to score high in some of the subdomains and low in the others. In such cases more attention should be paid to the subdomain scores than to the broad domain score. Questions about the accuracy of your results are best resolved by showing your report to people who know you well.
So i have taken this test probably 5-6 times over the years and have found that openness and agreeableness have maintained at a pretty high level throughout that time.
Since graduate school,
Extraversion is up. Cheerfulness was really the only trait I had that was at a good level. However, I haven't been around as many people as I was in school so this rise may be a result of being away from people long enough to be able to enjoy their company now.
Neuroticism used to be higher for me as well with a anxiety and depression being my major factors. I have since quit drinking, cut back on marijuana, and gotten into mindfulness meditation. I think overall, environmental factors are a big part of this trait.
Conscientiousness seems to be higher too but I think I will attribute that to getting older and seeing value in keeping uo with my stuff and obligations.
I took the short test, and I'm surprised I scored so low on Assertiveness and Intellect. Maybe it's because I've been sick lately.
Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends.
Your score on Agreeableness is low, indicating less concern with others' needs Than with your own. People see you as tough, critical, and uncompromising.
