    I'll be working as software engineer at one big company. And so far it looks pretty good! In one way, company feels more start-upy - no super strict dress code, flexible work hours - that kind of stuff. One of the best things is that they're building new backend - which means new methods and technologies! They even offer things such as free courses on a lot different topics. The people I've met there seemed really nice and the work environment was great. I can't wait to meet my future coworkers.

    This is just my second job, and it looks so great. I'm super excited about this!

    A month ago I met a wonderful girl during a gaming meetup group. Been dating for a few weeks since and as of this weekend we're officially together and I feel like I'm in the healthiest relationship I've ever been in my life.

    So I've been spending the weekend feeling happy and incredibly lucky to have met her. Also got to watch the elections happen here in Brussels, which I unfortunately couldn't participate in as I didn't register in time!

      Something I'd love to set up would be a way to automate the posting of these recurring topics on Monday and Friday. I don't really know how I would accomplish that, but I'll have to look around for a solution and see what I come up with.

      Good luck with this! I'd love to hear about the results, as I could adapt it for the ~books threads. How would you go about testing them, with a private Tildes instance?

      Aside from that though, I don't have much going on yet. I'll be going back to school one week from now, first time in years. To tell you the truth, I have mixed feelings. On one hand I'm excited because it's something I want to do and feel like I need to do, but I'm also nervous and intimidated. I've got four classes to complete between June and August and I really hope I haven't over done it. Time will tell. I do have a nice bike route I can take to school though, so that's nice.

      It's been a year since I was a student, and I can't tell you how much I miss those days. I love sitting at lessons, studying, learning, having fun doing something truly joyful. Man, let me be honest, I even loved the exams! I love the boring lectures, and being bored sitting through them. This is like 50% why I want to become an academic, I love university so much. Otherwise I'm quite cocky when it comes to allowing people to decide about my fate or to tell me what to do, but I pinch my palm and bite my lips and just go along with it just to be a part of what I love so much. Are you an undergrad? Hope you'll have some nice time throughout the semester!

      On mobile right now so I don't have a lot of research or links, and TBH I'm really inexperienced so this might not work for you and I don't really know how to use it. For my job one of my open tasks is to make a program that uses Selemium module in Python to do order tracking and automation with server hardware. You might be able to use that? Sorry if it ends up not being useful, like I said I haven't used it or have any experience with it, i just heard shades of my open tasks for work in your post and thought maybe it would help.

    I signed up for a vocational course last week, after my employer offered/agreed to pay for it. Officially, today is my first day as an enrolled student, and I've got 24 months to complete the course. During this week, I'll log in (it's delivered online), set up my profile, look around the website, "attend" an orientation webinar, and basically figure out what the hell I've got myself into.

        However, the course does provide certification (admittedly not a degree-level qualification) in the field I'm currently working, which should lead to better job opportunities, including possibly setting myself up to do this work as a freelancer/contractor.

    The weekend has been really really good. Yesterday was my partner and my birthdays. So yesterday we woke up and had breakfast together, they got me a jersey for my favorite baseball player, I got tickets to our favorite team vs our home city today so we're going to do that today which will be great. Otherwise, spent most of yesterday with my phone turned off and in a park enjoying the great weather. Got home, made a blanket fort and smores, got really high and watched Harold and Kumar.

    Other than that? The nice weather really feels like it has helped kick both my partner and myself out of a really long depression spiral. I'm finding myself interested and invested in the environment in a way I feel like I haven't been in almost 6 years, which is really exciting. So I'll be spending a lot of time looking at what we can do to make our next apartment really environmentally friendly, we are looking at gardening options at the new place, I'm looking into things I can do at my current job and potential different jobs to make a positive impact. Going to try spending some time looking at WattOS. Also, I feel like I had a personal breakthrough in technology. I always get high-end laptops/computers and have always gone to OS's that offer a lot of customization, but I'm always so tired I never code or do anything resource intensive that makes use of my computer's capabilities, and I never have the energy to do any real customizations. I fought that in me for a long time but I think coming to terms with it is fine and healthy. I want technology that just works. It's fine to view it as a means to an end and I'm not a worse software engineer for not giving a shit about that. Working on a Windows/Linux/Apple laptop doesn't super matter to me, I care more about what I'm doing on it. This should come with the very obvious caveat that I know some companies are more environmentally friendly and build more environmentally friendly computers and do more to help the earth.

    I just got a massage. It's been nearly two years since my last one, I think. That may not be unusual for most people but I'm a massage therapist and should know better! It's just that they're expensive and I don't have a benefit plan, and I don't want to do exchanges with any of the therapists I work with. I've really let myself go for a while, gaining weight and growing stiffer, so it's time to turn things around a bit. More stretching, more exercise, a massage once in a while, more self-care in general as I get older. Next up: book an eye appointment, because damn, things are getting blurry.

    In the latest "weekend" topic I mentioned my new set of cheapo acrylic paints, but I haven't done anything with them yet. I should probably paint something before getting new glasses, in case my blurriness accidentally produces a masterpiece.

    I intend to go to my local community college and sign up for classes for the upcoming Fall semester.....I have absolutely ZERO idea what I'm going to take but I've been in this start again/stop again pattern with school and I have got to get around to finishing a degree. I promised my Dad I'd graduate college but at 31, I'm not getting any younger. And I feel like I'm getting dumber. All my family thinks of me as this "Genius by birth, slacker by choice" type that could've been a doctor or a lawyer or scientist if I had just focused on school but I've never felt I was anything more than maybe above average intelligence. So I feel like I need to finish before I get too old and dumb to finish. That sounds stupid, I'm sure, but I definitely don't feel as smart as I once was.

    Fortunately, I'm finally in a job that pays me enough that I shouldn't have much issue keeping the bills paid and still go to classes regularly. For the longest time, I was in a position where going to school meant working less and working less meant having a much harder time making rent. Shouldn't be too much of an issue this time around. Especially since I work nights and have significant downtime where I can study/do homework while working rather than trying to fit in between shifts or at home when I'd rather rest and relax.

    Now if I can just decide what I want to focus my degree on. There's a multitude of things that interest me so narrowing them down into a degree plan has always been an Achilles Heel for me

      I can relate all too much. I will have to pick my classes back up, after I left them years ago, but even if I'm in a much better place now I still feel - left behind. And yes, stupider. I could focus so much better when I was 18. Objectively, I was a dumbass, but it's hard to feel that when, looking behind, things seemed so much easier than now.

      Still, good luck with your classes! Do you have any topics that interest you more than others?

        To be honest, no. And I think that’s been the primary reason secondary education has been such a pain in the ass for me.

        I’ve just never been focused on finishing so much as just trying to figure out what I’d want to finish in.

        As far as classes....I’ve always had this passing interest in programming and game development and, surprisingly, my community college has an AAS in “interactive simulation and game development” but with all the nightmares we hear now about what it’s like to work for a developer, it more or less puts that fire out. At least for a professional career. I may take a few classes and learn enough for a side project.

        I feel like I want to take my degree into the math/science direction and I originally started as a Psych major so I may finish that and try to angle for something in research

          Of course, I also have no idea how things work where you live. Here you can follow pretty much any course, but not take any exams, only a very narrow set of them would actually count towards a degree, and most of what you need to take is fixed.

            I've tried but if I'm being 100% honest......discipline has become my greatest foe. When I'm at home, I'd rather be playing WoW or MtG or something. And you'd be right....taking a class for a passing interest is probably a waste but I learn best in a structured environment where I can get guidance when I need it is the way I learn best. At least until I have a baseline knowledge of what I'm trying to learn. Once I have the basics down, and can build my knowledge from there, I tend to take a bit more initiative.

            Criminal psychology, mostly. I've grown up in a law enforcement household so I've grown up with stories of the atrocities man commits on each other. Just last night, my dad was telling me about a murder that occurred in his city. The questions that pop up in my head when I hear something like that. What drove a person to do that? What was running through their mind? What sort of upbringing did they have? Are they a product of a broken home, broken education system, broken criminal justice system or all of the above? What makes them tick? What drove them to the point where killing someone became the appropriate resolution?

            But I'm also the family "peacemaker". I'm the oldest of 6 and diplomacy was the name of the game in my household. Keeping 5 siblings from constantly fighting and bickering if only to provide my parents some semblance of order. So I think often about maybe going into a Mediator type role. Trying to help people reach a peaceful understanding and I think it sort of stems from the above questions. How do we help people reach common ground so things like assault and murder aren't seen as viable ways to solve their problems?

    • I'll learn if they'll admit me for the MA program I'm currently applying. If they do, I'll not apply any other schools, and probably try getting a job given I'll be able to remain in my hometown. I want to work remotely and/or freelance, but job market here is troublesome, so I may have to make do.

    • I want to complete my static site generator. I could only work with it intermittently, and it took way too long. When I complete it, by which I mean I'll be able to compile my blog and a couple more things, I'll start working on my podcast project.

    • I'll continue studying linguistics, but at a slower pace and without the rushing. In fact I need lots of excercises for distinctive features in particular, I keep forgetting lots of stuff there (any suggestions welcome).

          Both Ankara and Izmir: there's one uni in the latter and two in the former that I can apply. I will definitely apply to two of them, but I will also consider the third one which is one of the two in Ankara. The coming months will involve lot of traveling: at least two times to each city, and I'll try to turn them into little vacations.

          That campus is easily one of the best places in the city, even the whole province. But yeah, it is becoming unbearable here, agressive traffic and rude crowd everywhere. It is way less crowded in Ankara, and I hear that it is really cheerful in Izmir. This will be the first time I'll live alone, so I'm excited for that too.

          I may also have found a job I really loved and desired, fingers crossed! I'll probably talk about that in next weeks thread, after I find out if I'm accepted and make a deal.

    The weekend was fantastic. Spent the day with my partner on Saturday, and after some gaming on Sunday, I spent like 8ish hours fiddling with Godot and spriting in Aseprite.

    I hope to get some more Godot time this week, but we will see. I'd like to get a functional Zelda:Link's Awakening-like menu going. I have it slide down the screen, with the HUD staying visible at the top, but would like to see the inventory before the weekend. We will see though as I do not yet know what that will entail lol For updates, I try to either post something on http://www.kosterz.ca/g/ki/, or complain about something on Twitter and Mastodon

    Tonight I'll be spending with my partner, as she's working M-W, and then F-Su this week, so there may be days where we won't see each other.

      Following up on this week:
      Monday was just a chill out day after work, spent with my partner. I'm Canadian so no Memorial Day.

      Tuesday, I picked up a 2-in-1 vape/smoking pen for cannabis. Learned that whole process (of how to grind, how to load, and how to smoke), as I've only ever done it as a social thing when it's passed around.

      Wednesday, my partner and I went to see Aladdin, which we both thoroughly enjoyed.

      Tonight (Thursday), I have a massage right after work, as I haven't had one since January. Then the night will be spent cleaning, and some hangout with my partner. Cleaning has to be a bit expedited as my roommate and his girlfriend are having a party Saturday night, and I don't want to be THAT roommate lol

      Friday will consist of more cleaning and hangouts, as well as a chunk of Saturday for more cleaning.

      I do not know if I will be attending the aforementioned party, or if it will be just hanging out with my partner til she has to go to bed early, then work on my Godot project.

    When I started this week, I mostly just wanted to keep up with my languages and math self-study. I have been successful so far, only (partially) skipping a day because I was exhausted.

    I also:

    • learned that my hands now cramp after less than ten minutes of scribbling;
    • rebuilt my Anki cards stylesheet, changing my old crappy colorscheme to a much less harsh gruvbox light;
    • re-discovered pic, discovered what grn does* and how the hell to use it, and learned that, while grohtml does work, it only supports pic and other preprocessors when used with -ms;
    • got groff to spit out emoji (you just need a non-color emoji font to be loaded and set to be .special);
    • messed around with Zettelkasten, Nataniev's Indental/Runic, and improved on its Tk viewer.

    The Nataniev ecosystem is just fascinating. It might be the fact that they have built it from scratch, it might be the fact that they even built their own time/date format and language, but it made me want to play around with it a bit.

    Right now, I'm using org-mode for my knowledge base, but I'm not too satisfied with it - having to answer the question "in which file should I put this?", maybe with a snippet/link that belongs to more than one possible page, is a hassle, and I would like something less document/tree-oriented and more... snippet/graph-oriented?

    The Zettelkasten system seems to be nearer to what I want, but I'll need to play around with it some more. In the meantime, I have an Indental parser, a rudimentary Runic parser, an inline markup parser loosely based on s-exprs, and a Tkinter app where everything comes together to form a lil' hypertext system.

    It'll need quite a bit of refactoring, though.

    * It embeds referenced gremlin files - vector images - inside a troff document. The program which generates them has been last updated in 1999, but it still compiles and runs (with some minor tweaks), and the format is ASCII-based and pretty simple anyway.
    † But I'm eyeing Scribble's syntax - @b{Bold} vs the current {b Bold}, @link[http://...]{link} vs {link http://... link}. A bit more noisy, but it might just make my life easier.

Instead of regular D&D, she decided to go with something a little different. Pugmire. Session zero is this Sunday.
