It's a shame that DHH is an unrepentant racist asshole. Birds of a feather flock together, I suppose.

Alright, maybe I'm just "old school" but I do NOT get the hype for this OS. It looks nice and has "strong opinions" about specific things but...could you not just do most of this yourself with any old distro? Is it just a nice riced out desktop? Any of the media I have seen for this distro just leaves me to trying to understand the hype.

For context I'm like a 15 year Nix user. Cut my teeth on Debian-based distros and a couple years back switched to NixOS. I have opinions about LInux stuff but nothing militant lol

Is this just a way for AI companies to funnel money into a distro to try and have their models being a bigger priority for usage in said distro? I know feck-all about DHH but saw part of his Ruby World talk and thought the guys was on drugs.

It’s being marketed as a “free speech” AI welcome Linux distro without the blue-haired open source lot. Now to me and many others this is quite a repulsive way to market a Linux distro but you can see how it’s gained traction and attention from some.

Omarchy is more him creating a space for himself and people like him rather than an actual technical achievement.

Yes, at the start of the project, but no, not at this point. As it stands, omarchy has almost 7000 commits from over 560 contributors. That's an amount of polish you cannot just do yourself, even with heavy LLM usage.

That said, I haven't tried it myself, and possibly never will. But it's not honest to say that it's nothing.

Context: been a Linux user for 30 years, also spent some of it developing one of the major ones.

Is this just a way for AI companies to funnel money into a distro to try and have their models being a bigger priority for usage in said distro?

I think they're just excited and hence motivated about things happening on their side of the political fence. Whatever that side is.

They also hired a security lead and announced a $100K security bug bounty program. https://omarchy.org/news/2026/10/omarchy-launches-bug-bounty-program-on-hackerone/

I would (politely) caution against equating commit count with level of polish.

Plus, a lot (all?) of them written by LLMs, which one could argue doesn't mean they're necessarily bad, but I doubt all of them were proper reviewed before merging.

I attempted to use it on a virtual machine and it was the worst distro experience I ever had, the iso itself is bloated, it took multiple attempts to even boot, 30 mins of installation, not sure if it was something bad with my virtual machine, and then it kept getting stuck after login.

I also watched a video of someone hyping it like it changed his life, he went from saying "the distro is extremely lean, to some seconds later say that includes zoom and steam by default", to me is such a bizarre combination to have those defaults

I don't understand this statement. Assuming that all those commits are exclusively about polish, it would need to put Omarchy ahead of any other distro and desktop environment. What makes it more polished than for example Fedora and Gnome, both rock-solid foundations, especially since Gnome is fairly polished as far as open DEs go?

Gnome has had more work done on it, in some sense over several decades, so it's of course more polished. I feel like you're arguing against something I didn't say.

The comment I replied to suggested that what Omarchy adds could be done by any individual by just writing configuration. That's the idea I was challenging.

Glad about the security researcher too. One of the first things I heard about was a really bad vuln and a bunch of people calling it vibecoded. I don't think the distro is for me based on some other people added context but if it is so popular I'm at least a little bit happy (for the users) that security seems to be getting taken more seriously.

First I hear of this OS, so the hype seems to have passed me by, until now. "If the application you need doesn't exist, have your OS create it for you" is a pretty cool approach. Will it work? Probably somewhat? Just never look under the hood! In any case, it's nice that it's Linux and not Windows that might be the first big vibe-first OS. Maybe it will make a dent in the market share of Windows. Personally I'll never use anything powered by Grok.

Grok 4.7 and beyond will be helping power our automated agents, like Omabot, who’s been reviewing the flood of PRs that keep pouring in. And it has its work cut out. We’re closing in on 7,000 pull requests from more than 550 contributors, and every one of them deserves a proper look. That’s not a job for mere humans!

On my project at work we're currently 4 backend developers. Of those, only me is actually hired by the company, while the three others are consultants. AI has made all of them more productive, but as the person who's going to maintain this software for possibly the rest of my life, I do my best to keep an overview of how the software actually does and what new code is added, and that means sooooo many pull requests. Pull requests are 100% a job for mere humans! Unless we want it all to turn into a black box no-one knows what actually does.

(Some days it feels like all I do is pull requests, and on those days I consider moving to the Arctic to become a turnip farmer.)

And given where they’re headed, there’s a real chance we’ll soon be consuming tokens beamed down from data centers in space.

    lol

Maybe Musk can use all that space AI to make his self driving cars work.

I had another exec the other day ask me if I was going to try and listed off a bunch of shit that it "has", that effectively was like yes, of all the distros, truly, this is one of them.

Not to mention I currently run NixOS, and moving off it to something less replicable would be just laughably stupid at this point.
