Why not ~comics?

I mean we have ~anime. I suppose there’s enough interest in comics among our users.

But as for the way it is now, ~music doesn't have separate groups for singles or albums or live performances, and ~books can cover novels of text, graphics, or a combination there of, be it a page or a novel or a periodical. Consumption method is secondary to content with our current setup and books are close enough to comics that it's not something we really need to break out.

    Wouldn't that go under books?

Not really. Most of the time comics are shorter and not considered books. Like an issue in a longer series. Example: Garth Ennis’ Preacher 18 or Neil Gaiman’s Sandman 11. It’s another format,...

It’s another format, there are distinct expectations surrounding it.

I mean, by that logic ~anime would be under ~tv.

I remember some discussions about these "hierarchy" arguments and some rather good points against going crazy with "set theory". Sometimes popular topics deserve their own root level group, despite technically fitting into another. I'm not opposed to ~comics, I just wonder if there's enough content to fill it? It would probably take a few dedicated people to regularly post, it seems Tildes is nerdy enough to have that!

I actually defended a more hierarchical structure before, but my opinion was clearly the least popular and also did not appeal to our BDFL. I decided to not devote any energy into it and go with the flow. So, if we’re not going to be strictly hierarchical, then yeah, I think ~comics is a good idea.

I’d he happy to post there.

Would the hierarchy be just a nesting of categories, or would posts flow up? For example, if you were interesting in any sort of books, subscribe to ~books and see posts from ~books.comics ~books.fiction ~books.nonfiction, but the individual subs wouldn't see each other. Continue on to ~books.comics.anime etc etc?

Or alternately, would it be more like the old newsgroups style alt.binaries.books.comics where it's just categorization?

From what I understand, the long term plan of Tildes is that posts will flow up.

Although there are certainly differences, that seems a bit exaggerated? It seems likely that a lot of people read both comics and other kinds of books. Bookstores and libraries usually have a comic section. I’ve read comics I got from Amazon. And there are famous authors who have written both comics and novels, such as Neil Gaiman and Ta-Nehisi Coates.

I'm being a little facetious here, but lots of people read books and drink coffee, and Bookstores often have coffee shops in them. I wouldn't think you'd post about coffee in ~books though. ;-)

Categories are often tricky particularly when you start looking at edge cases. I don’t mind adding a comics group, though I’m not sure it will get much traffic.

Maybe there could also be an ~arts.comics, and we would post a topic either there or in ~books.comics, depending on if the comic in question is published in book form or not.
