Anybody here like cartoon TV shows?
If anyone here is into cartoon/animated TV shows and I wanna know what you guys watch and if you would recommend anything!
Here's some of the stuff I watch:
Adult Cartoons:
- Rick and Morty
- Bojack Horseman
- South Park
- Bob's Burgers (haven't seen much of this though)
Kid friendly cartoons (but still pretty good imo):
- Gravity Falls
- Steven Universe
- Spongebob Squarepants
- My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (don't watch this so much anymore, quality went way down imo)
I've been thinking about watching Archer and Star Vs The Forces of Evil.
I know it's a unlikely but in case you haven't seen it Futurama is fantastic. If you like Bob's Burgers and Rick & Morty it'll probably be to your taste.
Futurama! I started watching and got a decent way through and then got busy and didn't end up picking it up again. I remember enjoying it a lot! I'll have to pick it back up!
I know it's off-topic, but there are no tags, so anarchy: Your username creeps me right out and I love it.
Best part of getting into tildes on the groundfloor is all the usernames that you won't see anywhere else unless they've stuck around for a loooong time. Was so happy I was able to get this name for once in my life.
I like several of the ones you listed, but I love Adventure Time!
To jump on here, Bravest Warriors is made and wirtten by the same guy on YouTube. It's kind of like a more adult version of Adenvture Time with similarly great writing.
catbugggggg
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a classic. It's aimed at kids, but the characters grow and change throughout the series in captivating ways. The show also has a charming, Miyazaki-style sensibility.
Castlevania is a Netflix Original series based on the early games. To be honest I thought it would be a shitshow, as most game adaptations tend to be. However, the writing, the evocative voice acting, and the gory, no-holds-barred animation style won me over. I couldn't believe it was done after the last episode! It's only 4 episodes at the moment with 8 more in production. I highly recommend it.
I'd always heard this about Avatar: The Last Airbender and recently found myself in a situation where I could hunker down and watch it though. I must say, even as a mid-30s adult I was actually quite impressed with the themes addresses and characterisation. It is notable that it's thoroughly a children's show, but it doesn't shy away from harder topics, even if it does simplify them somewhat.
Zuko's arc has to be the best of the show, but my heart lies with Toph in the end. Fantastic way of showing the use of self-deprecating humour as a shield, Even while she is one of the most powerful earth-benders and an adolescent to boot, she still feel vulnerable due to her blindness. Just fantastic stuff.
I second Avatar and would add The Legend of Korra, too. It's got a bit of a different feel which I think put off some folks who loved Avatar, but I really, really enjoyed it. (And the music is awesome.)
no one has mentioned The Venture Bros?? deliciously absurd
Archer has gone downhill a bit, I still enjoy it but earlier seasons were better. If you do give it a go again, try season 1 on.
Good to hear! I've been putting off starting the current season for a while, though that's partially because I wasn't too interested after the others and partially just so I can binge more at once.
Season 9 is still weird that it is completely outside the normal universe of seasons 1-7 but it has the same feel as the old stuff does. I consider it a big improvement from season 8, which was terrible.
Couldn't get into Star personally, but I couldn't get into Spongebob or MLP either so take that with a grain of salt.
Archer is good, it has it's ups and downs, the creator is getting burnt out and has hinted he is going to call it quits after the 10th season (currently airing season 9). He felt the content was getting stale and started switching it up, originally they were strictly a private intelligence agency, but as of season 5 they switched to a drug cartel theme, then back to secret agents, then to private investigation, film noire and now danger island.
Additionally I would recommend
Along the lines of Steven Universe & Gravity Falls there is: Adventure Time (on the surface a kids cartoon, but has very adult and dark themes going on), Bravest Warriors (might be hard to find unless you sail the high seas), and Bee and Puppycat (ditto to BW, very short run)
Over the Garden Wall is a great single season series. Very surreal and confusing until the end ties up a lot of loose ends
Regular Show, great stoner comedy, didn't outlast its welcome with a satisfying ending
My wife and I just binged through Over the Garden Wall-- what a fantastic odyssey that was. We both really love Halloween and the fall, and that movie just captured the spirit of both so wonderfully, not to mention some obvious inspiration from Miyazaki.
We don't usually seek out that type of humor (I don't know the name for it: non-sequiturs and randomness?), but when everything was just so cute and charming, it just cracked us open like a couple of eggs.
Regular show, i just realized that i still haven't finished the final season for that. Completely agree with it being a great stoner show, i'm thinking today i'll roll up a few blunts and finish catching up.
I just finished watching Over the Garden Wall. It was a heartwarming show filled with thrill and sparkles.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is likely the best anime I've ever watched (though I don't watch too many). It has a lot of well-written characters and you end up feeling for all of them. Much of the story is heavily about action vs consequence and makes you think a lot.
Conversely, Avatar: The Last Airbender.
I really enjoyed both FMA shows and can't really pick one over the other since they split and both go off in really good directions. I found the original show's storyline to be a lot more poetic in how it played out but Brotherhood was definitely more emotionally satisfying.
Archer is amazing. Rick and Morty, Ive tried to get into Bojack but I just can't.
My daughter's watch Troll Hunters on Netflix and it looks really good I've sat with them a few times but the little spoilers tell me what's going to happen scene for scene as it's about to happen so all the awesome gets taken away. Still visually it's great
how far have you gotten into bojack? i tried to get into it once and stopped halfway through s1. but if you stick through til the end of the season, it really hooks you.
I have to agree here. Bojack seems like it's nothing but a bunch of piss and fart jokes with added alcohol, but it gets much more interesting the longer the show goes on. Character development is top-notch and, for animated shows, unmatched. The writers also know how to swell emotion to a peak and deliver on it. Bojack becomes very relatable.
about half way into season 1 lol I'll give it a good shot. somewhat off topic, I tried GoT years ago and hated it then gave it a shot last night and love it, so time will tell
I watch Troll Hunters, they have a lot of great voice talent behind the series, and it's charming, but it has some lazy writing that often kicks me out of my suspension of disbelief. Overall I'd give it a 6/10.
I don't think I've watched enough to see that side of it, when the girls start rattling off the lines word for word I can't watch it. They are too distracting and I end up watch and listening to them not the tv
Just some old cartoons that I think are brilliant (in no particular order):
Johnny Bravo
Ed, Edd & Eddy
Cow & Chicken
I Am Weasel
Dexter's Laboratory
Tom & Jerry
The Powerpuff Girls
Samurai Jack (the original run)
The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy
Courage the Cowardly Dog
What About Mimi? (Pourquoi pas Mimi?)
Animaniacs
Pinky and the Brain
Freakazoid!
Marsupilami
Bamboo Bears
The Flintstones
The Jetsons
The Yogi Bear Show
Jonny Quest
Goddamn, that list got out of control! These are pretty much all the toons I used watch in my childhood. Memory lane for me right there. They're great for kids but I'd definitely watch them as an adult, if I could. I just can't seem to find them all.
I currently watch South Park (obviously), Bob's Burgers, and sometimes Family Guy and American Dad. I watched King of the Hill and Daria in the past, and would like to see something similar to KOTH again. As to current recommendations, you're already watching the two I'd suggest, but if you have access to King of the Hill episodes and haven't seen it then I'd recommend that.
I always just take for granted people have seen KotH, South Park, and Futurama. Forgot to mention American Dad, it is the series that Family Guy should have been, thankfully Seth was able to do it. Since Futurama was removed from Netflix I use old episodes American Dad and Bob's Burgers to fall asleep to.
I'm a sucker for King of the Hill and you should certainly watch archer if you're thinking about it!
I don't watch any TV shows these days besides MLP. It certainly has lost some of its charm with the expanded cast, but overall the show is still really good, especially considering how long it's been running. If I had more free time, I'm sure I'd be watching a lot more cartoons.
If I were to go and rewatch some of the shows I watched as a kid, though, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, Tom & Jerry, Ed, Edd, & Eddy, and the first 4 seasons of Spongebob are the cartoons I remember most fondly. I've also watched Gravity Falls and really enjoyed it, though I certainly wasn't a child when I saw it. Oh, and at one point I was watching Futurama but they removed it from Netflix. :(
Archer, South Park, Bob's Burgers, and Invader Zim. The last one is an oldie but a goodie, and geared more towards kids. Bojack is okay. I will watch it, but I haven't watched it over and over like I have Archer and South Park.
I'm watching the 4 seasons of Star Wars Rebels. I loved Clone Wars (not the movie!!!).
I am going to re-watch Tripping the Rift as soon as I can find my discs. That was such a freaking awesome show. Sadly it got ripped off TV. It was ahead of it's time.
I'm a fan of Mike Tyson Mysteries. It's absurd, and I love absurdist comedy. And I also love some of the old ones like He-Man and She-Ra, but that's largely nostalgic.
I'm just gonna name a few I think are good that have not already been mentioned.
China Il, About a college no one should ever go to but the friken teachers are rad.
God the Devil and Bob. God decides to give planet earth one last chance by making Bob, a machine worker from Detroit, his new profit, devil tries to sabotage it.
Clone High. Clones of famous historical figures are in high school together...
Wonder Over Yonder. Urm... weird yokel peanut shaped guy with sunny disposition and banjo travels the galaxy with noble purple steed and causes havoc for Lord Hater, a warlord trying to dominate the universe.
Mr Pickles. Family dog is possessed by a demon and does evil evil things.
Superjail, It's about a super jail and its probably the most fucked up and staggeringly beautiful show ever made.
FLCL, ....??? It's an anime... urm... it has a robot... not sure how to describe this one, very good though.
I am not an Animal. Common animals have been endowed by scientists with intelligence in a vivisection laboratory, the animals think they are in more like a Big Brother house type situation.
Hyped for FLCL Progressive's arrival in a day or so? I only watched FLCL a couple of years ago and wasn't too enthusiastic about it, but it's interesting to see it brought back due in large part to Adult Swim and the western audience.
Mostly just Ducktales and Southpark these days.
