Interesting! I love the cosmic crisp. I find it very flavorful and has a good bite to it. Sweet and a bit tart too.

Haven't printed anything in a couple years, but I was going strong on a Monoprice Mini v2! Great little machine with a big nodding community. I was having some issues with bed alignment / my gantry arm was a bit wobbly, and then I moved twice and haven't unpacked it since. I inherited a Lulzbot recently, not sure its worth the time or effort to set up though. Mostly would use for teaching. Was always interested in resin printing for tabletop gaming but seemed like a big effort

A few thoughts from a former vegetable grower:

One issue with farmer's markets is getting enough people to make it worth the time of the farmer. I worked a couple years on an organic farm, growing ~50 different things on just 1 acre, and there were only two of us--we were constantly busy (behind) on tasks. We cycled through a number of markets, because there usually weren't enough customers to justify all the costs and time spent prepping goods, plus all the waste. Some days we would have been better off just getting caught up at the farm rather than sell the small amount we did. There is a lot of interest in setting up a farmers market in every little town or area, but it's just not feasible. The central, larger markets get enough traffic where it can be viable, which attracts more variety, and so on...

A model that has some potential is a community supported agriculture (CSA) to bundle set items together and have them picked up or delivered.

The issue is that these models only work with organic/chemical free growing; there isn't enough profit on conventially-grown crops in a market-style garden (little bit of lots of different things). And not everyone wants or can afford organic produce

I think encouraging or finding ways to grow fresh produce in food deserts is a way to help alleviate some of the pains, but that's not for everyone, nor is it year- round, nor is it all food products you likely need.

A game I really liked is Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise From the Ashes You pilot mobile suits from a first-person cockpit view (regular GM units against Zeon suits). It's a Gundam game of my dreams, honestly: piloting big robots in a non-Warriors style.

Weird associated memory: leaving school early on Sept 11, 2001 after everything happened, and playing this game with my friend.

As well, Armada (as mentioned) was a fun game!

    I've been baking cookies recently:

Thumbprint shortbread cookies with a homemade strawberry rhubarb jam
    Snickerdoodles
pfeffernusse (kind of like gingerbread, but less ginger spicy and more warming Chai spice)

I may bake some bread or make fresh pasta over the winter holiday. Depends what ends up inspiring me! The best part about any of these is being able to share it with others, so it's a good excuse to try a fun (new) project. In the summer, I end up making jams and other preserved foodstuffs a decent amount (candied or dried peppers, e.g.)

    Candied jalapeños: https://www.ballmasonjars.com/blog?cid=candied-jalapenos

    Red pepper jelly: https://www.ballmasonjars.com/blog?cid=pepper-jelly-recipe

I usually end up water bath canning both recipes so I can give them away as gifts to people throughout the year. For the red pepper jelly, I often don't use bell peppers but just use hot peppers sans seeds/membranes. It has a bit of heat either way, but it's tempered a lot by all the sugar. The candied jalapeños (cowboy candy) have a good heat to them when I use Serranos. Both have been a big hit!

This is how I save all my goo-covered seeds. It works very well and is pretty low-effort to get clean seeds. I've only been doing it for 3 or so years but I've had no issues from one generation to the next.

Similarly, if I want to ensure germination I will put seeds in a folded damp paper towel, inside a plastic bag, and leave it for a couple days. Seeds will start pushing out roots so you can identify which are germinating, and then carefully transplant to pitting medium.

Congrats on starting the PhD program! It's a long journey but you will learn a lot (both about the subject and yourself!) in the ensuing years. If you haven't already picked someone to work with, ensure that whomever your advisor is will be a good fit: it's someone you'll be working with closely for 5+ years.

With dysthymia and many ADHD symptoms (undiagnosed) myself, there were times where I really struggled during my PhD (setting your own work schedule, managing many small tasks, balancing work&life) but also many opportunities to learn tons of new stuff and immerse yourself in it! I really loved my many opportunities to teach as well as learning about the various x-ray characterization methods of earth materials (EPMA, CL, WDS mapping) 🤓 I also got to travel to some places I would have otherwise never been! (e.g., Chile).

So, you're more than capable of completing the PhD, you will just have to make sure you keep yourself on task :) It can be great to have regular meetings with your advisor and to set goals that you can try to meet, rather than only get stuff done when you're under immense pressure of a deadline. Best of luck! I'm happy to chat if you ever want

I'm surprised about the supposed rarity of rocky vs gaseous planet ordering in other star systems. Maybe it's due to 1 vs 2 vs 3 stars, but it's assumed that the frost line determines where rocky vs gas planets form. Closer to a star, it's too hot for certain elements to condense, so it's only so farther away that we can get gas planets to form at all. So, for our solar system that line exists between Mars and Jupiter. I'm curious why it might be different in other systems

Volcanic activity on Iceland is pretty common given its geology, and this looks pretty much what is expected. Interestingly, while basalt is the dominant lava type at Iceland, there are some minor rhyolite deposits too!

After beating BOTW a month or two ago, I went backwards and started playing Skyward Sword on Switch, which I had never played except for a few hours on Wii. It's been really interesting to go back to a non-open world LoZ game. At the same time, seeing some of the elements that went into botw: like the sailcloth, crafting/upgrading, stamina wheel. I definitely like the controls on Switch vs Wii. I'll get to TOTK eventually!
