Hello everyone! I think most of you have already met me online, but I thought I'd wait for the new weekly thread before posting this.

I joined the server a couple of days ago and have been getting myself set up pretty well. About the only thing I feel lacking in is a solid supply of dyes for armour stand work, but I'll sort that out in time. I originally set myself a goal of building a house, mining diamonds, and maybe going to the end (though regular progression) before gearing myself out, but that lasted all of about... 1 day. That said, I did get my starter house mostly built so if you make your way to the train station at 65,215 (next to the villager trading hall) and follow the path south you'll find your way there.

I could have given the coordinates to the house directly but I've spent hours building a path to my house and I want that path to be used occasionally. The half of it leading to town is mostly decorated as of posting this comment, but there are still details to work out. The other half leads to spawn and needs more love (edit: love has been given). I know everyone is using elytra to get around (including myself), but I want to focus on building things that are worth walking through. While I do have screenshots that I could post, I want you to experience it for yourself.

I didn't find a way to work it into the previous paragraphs, so I'll put it here on its own. Thank you to everyone who has helped set up Tilde Town and the wider server. Community storage meant I could actually build my house to the size that matched my ambition for a starter house. The trading hall meant it only took a couple of hours to go from no gear to max diamond. The iron supply and various farms meant I had the emeralds to do that. The community spirit is great, and I hope to contribute to it in time.

I've also been busy over in @GravySleeve's mall building a shop: the secret_agent detective agency (I even cracked out the shaders for some screenshots). In order to justify the dark corridor leading up to it I also built two tiny apartments to go with it. That brings me to the bit where you get to join in. There's a bunch of armour stands in there without heads, feel free to place your head on one of the armour stands.

Some extra design decisions that went into the secret_agent build
    • I was originally going to try fit the secret_agent shop in just half a plot, but when I wanted to have the corridor as a buffer between the bright and open area of the mall and the cramped interior of the shop I realised I'd have to use the full thing.
      • The apartments were just me filling space. There isn't much that I'd be able to fit in there otherwise, and I didn't want to add another shop as it would distract from the secret_agent office.
      • Still, making apartments that tiny was a challenge. There's not a lot of floor space as soon as you start furnishing.
    • The outside of the "shop" is a blank wall because I wanted it to blend into the background of the mall. There's so much focus on shops with bright lights and colours that I wanted to do the opposite.
      • I only realised this later, which meant I had to tear down the corridor and adjust at one point. Luckily I hadn't put up all of the walls yet.
      • In order to add more visual interest to the outside I added the water cooler and bench. It just needed something simple that felt like it belonged. Of course, no mall would have a random water cooler out in the open, there'd be a vending machine for bottled water instead but I wanted to make the bubbles/ice in the cooler so I did that instead.
        • Nobody, not even myself, knows whether the water cooler contains bubbles or ice. I'm now ruling that they're in a permanent superposition of being both bubbles and ice, even when observed directly.
    • The corridor inside is made to feel a little uncomfortable, as it's not a space that you're really meant to hang around in (unless you're the two armour stands in the dark end).
    • The lamp/plant immediately to your right upon entering the hallway is meant to draw your attention to that side of the build, since that's actually where you need to go. Without it that side just got lost in the darkness.
    • All of the doors have pressure plates, except for the one leading from the corridor to the office itself. This is so that door stays open, drawing your eye to the thing that is actually important in this build.
      • The pressure plates leading from the mall into the corridor are placed on the outside so the doors close when you walk in, shutting you inside the more cramped space and completely blocking out the rest of the mall.
    • If you want to give secret_agent a case, just be aware he's not very good at his job.
      • The shelf next to secret_agent himself has blank books and a space to put them. I'll only check the shelf very occasionally, so the fastest way to get him on the case is to message me directly. But still write the book.
      • There are written books on one of the shelves referring to different cases I've taken on in other servers.

I am excited to check out your place when I am back on in the new year. As for your comment that everyone on the server uses elytras, it is just because you have not been on when I have been on. I keep one around and occasionally use it, but I normally walk or use horses/metro to get around

Also, sadly, eyechoirs's supply of dyes is pretty much running out. We might need to create a dye farm someday.

We actually have quite the water network as well! Some of it you might already have seen like the canal in and under town. But further out there are also quite a few canals connecting rivers and oceans.

Even across ice, if you follow the river from your house away from town you will encounter a contraption I build a while ago that allows you to boat on the ice. There is then a route you can follow (marked by lanterns) which allows you to enter the ocean past the ice. From there you can even circle all the way back to town.

Most of this is also marked on the dynmap transport layer.

Follow the penguins on the nether roof and see if you can claim fastest time! This applies to anyone else who may have missed it! I am also considering organizing a multiplayer race sometime after the new year if that sounds fun to people!

Having a cargo elevator and dock would be cool. But I may be a bit biased, considering my house has quite a large dock and crane.

Finally logged back into server after a while and I forgot how much I missed it. It's amazing to see how much the town has changed even though it's only been a few months since I last logged in. I heard my "house" caught fire from a lightning strike (!) so thank you @teaearlgraycold for fixing it while I was gone!

I decided to actively improve the world this time around so I extended the Cyan Line metro out to the farms west of Tildetown. I've never built anything on that scale before but it was fun! The rail line is operational, could use some decoration though. Whoever was building the extension before had some decorations so I'll try to copy that. The line also gets a bit hairy at night with skeletons being able to snipe you as you ride. I'll see if I can get some protections around that line in general as its exposed the entire way.

I also placed a shulker at the new station with two carts in it.

One minor point, these are not the western farms, but rather "Eyechoirs Estate". It just happens to include a lot of farms Eyechoirs made.

Dynmap has been updated to include this extension btw :)

    Web chat mod progress

This week I made a lot of progress on the web chat mod I am developing. Tea took an interest as well and has been contributing a ton, thanks tea!

I also submitted it to modrinth and is available there now! This is still a basic version but fully functional. Unlisted for now, but at least easy enough to install for anyone who wants to give ti a go.

The things Tea and I worked on this week are a lot of polish and things like better history playback, pings, etc. Those will be probably released somewhere later this week, depending on how it goes (it's the season afterall).

    Dynmap reminder

I also want to atract some more attention again to the server dynmap, specifically some of its functionality people might not be familiar with.

    1. On the top left there is an option to show normally hidden layers, one of these shows transport stops and transport lines.
    2. On the right side of the map you will find a menu that can fold out, it allows you to select different worlds and shows the available markers. If some of the farms/factories seem far away, make sure to check if there might be a nether roof portal.

    Screenshots!

    Tower challenge

You know, this one. Gravy finished a really neat little build this week. There are still three floors or so available for someone looking to do a little but challenging build :)

All rules followed with no modifications to external walls. Everyone is welcome to replace one of the mob heads with their own.

    Web chat V1.0.0 is here!

I already wrote about it last week, this week we made a lot of progress where I feel it is very complete!.

    Get it from modrinth

    Features

    Features

    • Access chat through any web browser.
    • Full support for Minecraft's text formatting (colors, bold, italic, etc.)
    • Clickable URLs in chat messages.
    • Chat history is stored and available when you are on a server and open chat in a browser.
    • Tab notification for new messages when the browser isn't focused.
    • Fully client side, should work on any server.
    • Ping support for your username & configurable keywords.

    Requirements

    Installation

    1. Install the mod from Modrinth or grab the latest release from GitHub.
    2. Start minecraft.
    3. Join a server.
    4. Go to localhost:8080 on the same computer, or use your computer's local IP address (like 192.168.1.x:8080) from other devices on your network.
    5. Start chatting.

    Special eyechoirs mention

@eyechoirs, you might not have realized this. But your comment here provided me with the push I needed to start working on this mod. I had been thinking about it for a while and you wanting to socialize but minecraft itself being a lot pushed me to start work on this.

With this mod installed you can minimize minecraft and still chat with the people online. Even from your phone as long as it is on the same network as your computer.

In the category "not because it is needed, but because I want to". A while ago I added a crafter to the witch farm that crafts redstone blocks. As it turns out there is now so much storage for redstone blocks that the secondary items started to overflow.

The sensible thing would have been to let it be as we have so much of everything that it doesn't matter, or make some sort of overflow lava thing.

So I did none of that, and just expanded witch farm storage by a bunch for secondary items.

Because sorting on the farm doesn't have overflow protection I made sure the pulse is slow enough that it doesn't become an issue. If you want to tune it just adjust the repeaters, the lever also turns off all crafters

There are still 12 open spaces for shops, as well as 3 spaces in the food court if anyone else wants to join the project!

Fyi, I am not sure how it looks without shaders. But with shaders the mall had quite a lot of dark spots, specifically the second floor was very underlit. I am thinking of ways to create light ornaments you often see hanging from mall ceilings (at least here you see them, think christmas lights without the christmas theme).

In the meantime I went around and did strategically place various sea lanterns in a way that I think fit reasonably well.

I also added a few more stairs ;)

    I just updated dynmap:

    • Cyan line extension
    • Documented the ice route
    • Added the great north eastern passage

If anyone wants their home added or if farms are missing leave me a message here as a reply or ping me, I don't always remember to check the books at the town message board.

Also just again as a reminder the server dynmap has some functionality people might not be familiar with but is very valuable:

I think I have fixed the issue with the chunk loader at community storage. @IsildursBane. I believe I found two issues:

First: in my experience the item-based chunk loaders are a bit unreliable. I noticed the hoppers were placed one level above the base of the portal (like this) - I think sometimes the item can catch on the side of the hopper and fall into the space inside the portal and fail to continue loading the chunk. So I replaced the loaders with a more reliable (in my experience anyway) minecart-based chunk loader.. The nether side is dead simple.

I connected the signal line to the detector rail rather than the clock. It stays on only when a minecart comes back through the portal and loads the overworld side - if the minecart is lost somehow and doesn't come back through to load the chunk, the signal line turns off within the 10 seconds. We might be able to use this to lock the system as a fail-safe if the chunk loaders fail.

Second: When items are deposited in the input chest, the timer cannot be reset until it deactivates. That means, in the worst case, if someone deposited items, waited nearly 5 mins, the deposited another group of items, the second group would not activate the loaders. In fact, no group within that 5 mins could activate them.

I attempted to fix this by lowering the pressure plate one block so it doesn't lock the dispenser. This means each time items are deposited * the timer gets another 5 mins. This also means more items will be consumed in general, so I added a hopper and double chest full of iron nuggets to hopefully hold it over indefinitely.

    * I know this is insufficient, because it only triggers each time items begin flowing through the primary ingest dropper. It's a rising edge detector. So if a particularly large deposit takes longer than 5 mins to process, the chunk loaders would deactivate for the remainder. Or if someone makes a deposit while items from a prior deposit are still being processed then the newer deposit will not reset the timer.

There needs to be an additional circuit that resets the timer when it expires if items might still be in the system. Ideally, there would be a ~2 minute timer that is instantly reset every single time an item passes through the ingest dropper. An item despawn timer by itself is fundamentally not sufficient for this. I spent a little bit of time searching for a suitable timer but didn't have any luck. I will spend some time over the next few days trying to find or design a suitable timer reset mechanism.

Update: thinking about it, "a particularly large deposit that takes longer than 5 mins" is only like 10 stacks. I think this change to the timer has made things worse. If anyone wants to revert the change before I get the chance to: raise the pressure plate one block and reduce the delay of the repeater facing the dropper to 1 tick.

For the timer, if you left my original timer system, but just moved the pressure plate, the 5 minutes would be sufficient. The reason for this is because I did a spaghetti mess that I designed where the chunk loaders turn on immediately, but the dispenser dispenses the item once the last system is sent through, giving it another five minutes to have it run through the systen

Alright, I think I've got it at a good state now. I misidentified your "spaghetti mess" as a rising-edge detector, so that's what I built when I lowered the pressure plate. As you describe it it must have been a falling-edge detector, and I think you're right that triggering the item timer with it is sufficient.

So I've done that.. The loaders are activated immediately when items stream in, then every time the item stream stops it starts the despawn timer. I did keep the plate lowered, so every falling edge starts the 5 min timer to prevent deposits within that 5 minute window being lost.

However... I noticed there are still items piling up in the filter chests. I checked all the droppers and found a few stray items causing items to get shuffled and interrupting the delay from the item gate, which in turn causes random items to go into the filters rather than storage. I removed those stray items and have tested for a bit. Things seem to be okay now but we'll see. Hopefully the chunk loaders will keep it that way.

I think the only thing that could cause problems would be a deposit in-progress during server restart or unexpected server crash. It might be a good idea to add something like RestartRedstone that triggers 5 mins before server restart to lock the input until the server starts again, but I don't know how much work that would be for @teaearlgraycold.

I also saw that redstone blocks and dust are directed to Ores, and redstone blocks are also directed to Redstone Components. I don't think that causes problems, but it doesn't feel right. I've directed them both to Redstone Components.

I wonder if it's possible to solve the restart problem with vanilla redstone. Is there any way to reliably detect a restart? Clearly there's a side-effect to restarting, so perhaps there's a way to measure that side effect. Then on restart you can set a ~24 hour timer which locks the inputs just before the next daily restart.

It wouldn't be too hard for me to implement the RestartRedstone datapack though. I just think for some players here it could be an interesting problem to solve.

I know of some mechanisms that might detect a restart after it's occurred. Frost walker boots on an armor stand will freeze water when their chunk is loaded; in spawn chunks this has the effect of detecting a restart. However out at community storage this would activate every time a player enters the area to load the chunk.

The side effect that I think is breaking storage is that if the server restarts while items are being transported through droppers, the observers powering those droppers miss their scheduled activations across the restart. So the items end up stuck in the droppers and cause the problems I described. This would also happen when the player leaves the area and unloads the chunks, but that effect should be fixed with the new chunkloaders and timer I built.

I could imagine some load detector and timer in spawn chunks that somehow sends a signal to community storage with some line of dynamic chunk loaders. An alternative is to keep the timer at community storage, and keep a chunk loader so that community storage is always loaded. For the timer to work, though, you'd still need a restart detector and dynamic chunk loading system to get community storage loaded automatically. Either way you need that line of dynamic chunk loaders, so I figure it's better to keep the timer in spawn chunks.

What are the server settings for where and how big spawn chunks are? Specifically how far away is spawn chunks from community storage? If it's more than a few chunks in the nether it would be a big effort. Just eyeballing it on Dynmap I think it would be like 3-4 dynamic chunk loaders? It would definitely mess with nether portals around spawn or town, though.

I'd also pitch that RestartRedstone would allow players who are very far from spawn chunks to make their contraptions more robust without breaking everyone's portals.

Hopefully it is stable now, thanks for all your work. As for server restart, maybe that is just something us players need to be aware of. @teaearlgraycold is there a specific reason that is when the server restarts? I am wondering if we moved server restart a bit later so the northamerican group is asleep, it may be less likely for server restart to break things

As for things being sorted into several categories, that is caused by different people adding stuff to filters, and something fits into several categories. This is just something that will happen, and it will always be sorted into the first option

The restart time is when it is so that if something goes wrong I am still awake to fix it. But I can change it. That just means if something is misconfigured the server could be down overnight.

That is a valid reason, so probably best if it is left as is. Also, I was unsure if moving it later into the night would be helpful, as there would be less awareness of server restarts

Speaking of which, I think @mintysaurus mentioned they wanted to make a Chinese place a while back, but the food court hadn't been built yet! It's ready now!

Edit: There is one space that has been claimed which I don't believe has a sign, but the floor is already bamboo.
