Just my $0.02 since opinions are like assholes, everyone has one...

I'm not arrogant enough to believe we're the only intelligent life in the universe, it's simply too vast and too ancient for that to be true.

At the same time, galactically speaking, we're in the middle of nowhere and I'm not arrogant enough to believe that any intelligent species, with the capability of making it all the way out here, would find anything remotely interesting here.

I guarantee nobody is travelling light year upon light year to come here and kidnap some yokel in the middle of nowhere and do medical experiments on them.

Now, that being said, there is some kind of phenomenon we do not understand, is beyond our current technology, AND is being handled with utmost secrecy... my expectation, if anything, is it's not aliens, it's time travel.

Some future version of humanity cracked it and has come back to explore, record, and yes, scientifically experiment. The same way we dart, tag, and release wildlife.

The enforced secrecy only makes sense in a sort of "temporal prime directive" to prevent contamination of the future timeline. They aren't on the White House lawn because they can't. It would screw up everything.

Is there a cabal within the Government working with them? Quite likely, and they can't say anything either for the same reasons. They're likely just sitting on technology, releasing it on a schedule when we're ready for it so we don't accidentally destroy ourselves.

OTOH, I say "walked" but I used a mobility scooter since it's just not possible for me to do any sort of distances at all anymore. :(

My wife had a super hard time one day because it was really, really hot and didn't hydrate properly. The next day was cooler and we loaded the scooter with drinks, so lesson learned.

On the other, other hand, what we did wouldn't really have worked with a car, either. The walk of fame is MEANT to be walked.

The #1 thing to know about Hawaii is that, yes, it's beautiful and exotic and there's a ton of stuff to love there.

But - EVERYTHING is more expensive there.

You're going to a dot of land in the middle of the Pacific, everything you can expect to need there has to come in either by airplane or boat. There are local resources, but not enough for 1.5 million people + tourists.

$2,300 a month + utilities sounds fine, but everything else, you can expect to pay through the nose for and then you have storage fees and such for what you're leaving behind...

Plug in your salary here and it will tell you how much you need to make to maintain your standard of living in Hawaii:

I'm super comfortable in Portland on $138K. I'd need to hit $204K in Honolulu.

Last weekend was exhausting. My wife's birthday was on Sunday and my reservations fell through at the last minute so I had to scramble for a backup plan.

BUUUUTTT... time was limited. She only had 1 extra day off, so whatever we were going to do, it had to fit in between end of work on Friday and going to work Tuesday morning...

Then I remembered a trip we took to Disneyland... she wanted a side trip to Hollywood to find Rush's star on the Walk of Fame, but we couldn't make it, traffic conspired against us. :(

So I booked the Loew's Hotel, 1 block from the Walk of Fame and around the corner from the Chinese theater. We flew down, found the star, toured Hollywood Blvd., caught Barbenheimer. It was a good birthday!

For more modern stuff, but still like 30 years old now, look at the Belgariad by David Eddings or the Thieve's World books by Robert Aspirin

Thieves World is unique in that Aspirin is the editor of a shared world and the books are collections of short stories done by different authors.

I guess they count it because it's still in theaters? But then Mario came out in April and is still running 3 months later...

    https://blog.gocollect.com/comiclist-new-comic-book-releases-list-for-07-05-2023/

Oh boy, the whole "Knight Terrors" thing is starting at DC. Not sure how I feel about upending Dawn of DC for a giant crossover event after just a few issues. I do have to admit, Joker trapped in a nighmare Office Space world looks hilarious.

    What's on your list?

Adventures of Superman – Jon Kent #5 - Been enjoying all the Supes books since the big reboot.

Captain America #750 - Now that the Cold War arc is over, they boiled down both Cap books into a big #750 issue before starting over with a new #1 again...

Daredevil #13 - Is it over yet? Seems like it just drags on now.

Doctor Strange #5 - Dormammu as a wedding officiant? Sure, why not? Strange looks sharp in a tux.

Edge of Spider-Verse #4 - Didn't realize this was the last issue. :( Huge kick out of J.J.J. getting the bite and Pete being the dude in the chair.

F.F. #9 - Finishing out the stolen memory storyline. Interesting uses for Sue's force fields, doing some new things besides "sphere" and "box".

Peacemaker Tries Hard #3 - Yeah, it's a sequel to the HBO Max show, no, I don't care. It's a delight to read.

    Spider-Man #10 - Still looking for a Spider-Boy explanation...

X-Men #24 - I think I'm just buying it out of habit at this point. All the super-mega crossovers have taken all the joy out of the X-Men books. :(

My "on again, off again" project... I got distracted by buying a house. :)

I have a room full of comic books. They are 99% alphabetized and inventoried in both a flat and relational database.

What I want to do is an Alexa style query asking for a specific thing and having a series of smart lights light up the correct box(es) Wheel of Fortune style.

So far, using a Raspberry Pi, I got the database query to work. I can input a query with text, and output one or multiple box numbers.

What I wasn't able to crack was the voice input or smart light output. Then I bought a house and moved and haven't been able to get back to it. :(
