Just a personal passion project has been greenlighted by a local museum, a drawing club open to everybody, it's a weekly session where anybody who wants to participate can do it, a space to draw and hang out every Thursday in a place I like from my city. Have to confess that I feel a little nervous and I'm going through a bite-sized imposter syndrome episode, but yeah, I'm happy and excited.

I may be too late with this advice, but if you are using vinyl plank flooring, you might want to look at the Mohawk Factory Outlet for good buys. Most of what they sell is laminate flooring, which I'm not fond of, even the waterproof versions, but they also sell vinyl plank and real wood flooring on that site. There are two things that stood out when I purchased from them: their list price for the flooring is "to you" (if you buy $50 or more), which means they pay shipping and there was no sales tax assessed on my purchase.

Mohawk is a major brand, by the way, and they own Pergo.

Glad you're enjoying your rebuilding projects. I've never done plaster work, so that sounds a little intimidating. I've always worked with ceramic or porcelain tile in bathrooms.

I'm a Fate GM and run a weekly (ideally) game set in a cyberpunk future that has an alien precursor artifact trope woven into the narrative that takes place after the global collapse of nation states and corporate run archologies have risen as the replacement mode of operation. The story (this campaign - the world is persistent) is centered on NSF (New San Francisco).

I maintain the world between campaigns and the characters from past campaigns continue to live on (mostly) in the world and affect it as well. They also make appearances in subsequent campaigns from time to time. So I liken it to me being a game engine where things are happening no matter if the players are interacting with those elements or not and it requires a fair bit of writing and planning.

Then there's the arcs for my PCs and the shenanigans they get up to. lol

That's where basically most of my "creative" energies are spent these days.

I'm well versed in basically most of the cyberpunk fiction and genre going way back so that's always a pull but I'm also an anarchist who does activism and community organizing so much of what makes it in is sort of predictive commentary on the state of affairs as I see it. The fact that I'm a technologist of sorts by trade as well helps fill out the techno-babble side of the world.

Here's some stuff that you can never go wrong by stealing from though:

        • Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
        • The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester
        • Software by Rudy Rucker
        • Neuromancer by William Gibson
        • Mirrorshades Anthology edited by Bruce Sterling
        • The Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow

That's the cyberpunk stuff. Then my story has the standard alien artifact trope woven in that happened when one of the megacorps was mining Europa and it consumed the workers and the moon itself. So there's an element of technology acceleration that allows for a compressed timeline of sorts. So standard sci-fi trope fare there.

As far as how I manage the rest I'm a trained actor (stage) as well as an orator and rhetorician in my own right given the organizing and activism side of my life so I'm used to having to think on my feet. Mix it all together and I guess you get a halfway competent GM.

If you (or anyone reading this) ever has questions, if I can answer them I'm happy to. The world could use more GMs/DMs.

Artfight 2023 is complete! This is the other I suppose creative thing I was working on. I've been pretty active in terms of just doing stuff this year so I didn't get as much drawing done as I was hoping. But I still managed to squeeze in 11 attacks that I'm very proud of. I really like what I drew and I LOVE looking back on previous artfights to see how far I've come as an artist, gives me the warm fuzzies. Otherwise my creative pursuits have been stunted in recent weeks as 'tis the season to go outside and do outdoor activities.

Slugging away on my most ambitious novel to date. Sorta went on a huge limb and hired a professional illustrator from the 90s White Wolf Games days. To say that art has been inspiring is to call the pope a casual catholic. It's been a huge boost that I hope will get me through to the end. it's amazing what people can do with a little ink to breathe life into your imagination.

I have an ongoing crafting thing of making "three-sided cards" that have a front side, back side and a web side with a QR code. I put them together to make things like

    https://mastodon.social/@UP8/110817619887893867

which isn't the biggest one I've made but it's representative of what I can do with arbitrary sized cards cut on the rotary cutter. I've been wanting to make one based on photographs I took, and I have a bunch of photos I took of the garden in front of my barn that I printed and gathered them up here

    https://mastodon.social/@UP8/110820525254376607

these still aren't right because I cut them down from 8.5x11 paper so they all are 11 inches in some direction so they don't make a good "spiral", I need to make some prints that have completely different dimensions, say by cutting down 5x7 paper. I'm planning at this point to print enough cards to make at least two collages.

Currently working on this cross stitch pattern! It's a bit of a bitch though as there are so many different colors and combinations of colors and colors near each other and types of stitches and... mostly it's all the really light colors and near-white colors on the near-white aida that's just 💀

I probably won't buy more patterns from this designer to be honest. It's really beautiful but it's not exactly relaxing to stitch it - and then the whole point of this hobby kind of goes out the window for me.

With that said, I think I'm at about the halfway mark! It looks kind of washed out, in a way, since I haven't done backstitching yet. But once I do, everything will really pop. Here's my progress so far!

Edit: Completely forgot another thing that I was working on!

I'm redoing my wall as I needed more shelf space, so I've taken down all my old embroideries and will be tossing quite a few of them into storage to make room for my newer ones. Still a work in progress but you get the idea I think - old and new.

I may need even more shelf space though so open question to ~creative: what do you think of the idea of repurposing skateboards to make a shelf out of it? It would either go over or under that box shelf I've put up (or I might move things around again to do it)

My buddy did that in his rec room, and it looks great. But it fits the theme of his room, since he also has a bunch of custom painted skateboard decks by Ten Hundred and various other graffiti artists, as well as a ton of other graffiti artwork (murals, prints, paintings, etc), which he has hanging alongside the skateboards acting as shelves holding even more graffiti inspired stuff (like a scale model train car and shipping containers all graffitid up). So they may not look quite as good in your own room, unless you modify them in some way to fit whatever your room's theme is. Regardless, it's still a neat idea in general though, IMO.

I've started making games that incorporate my watercolor as art in them! The two main projects fighting for my attention right now are a top-down adventure game and a danmaku/bullet hell shooter. I've got about seventeen different game ideas in the pipeline, though, so it's a little out of control at the moment - but I will try to keep y'all in the loop, hopefully with pictures soon if that sounds interesting to anyone. :)

I spent a good portion of last night trying to set up Stable Diffusion on my computer using Automatic1111 Web UI to create AI generated images. There's a few communities on Reddit and Lemmy for AI generated images and I was really impressed by the dreamlike and surreal sort of stuff it can put out, that also looks very real at times.

Automatic1111 is a very simple to set up UI that works through your web browser, so I figured I'd give it a try. I'm not the most technologically literate person, but I can often stumble my way through and it really wasn't much more than installing the right version of Python and running a .bat file.

The biggest hurdle was finding out that the official version doesn't have AMD GPU support, and having to start over with an unofficial fork that does support AMD. Got that running and put in a very simple prompt, "white kitten playing with a red ball on a woven rug in a modern living room".

Hit run, and watch the progress bar crawl along for about 20sec before I get an error message... My rx470 doesn't have enough vram to generate the image lol.

It opened me up to the inner workings of this nascent little hobby and community though, so I am very excited to one day upgrade my hardware and give it a try myself!
