Where do you all go for gaming news?
I love keeping up with industry announcements and new trailers, but a lot of game news websites are too full of fluff. Is there a good videogame news aggregator or a journalism site that you like? I used to like IGN and Kotaku but I find their content more useless than not.
When the Reddit stuff was going down, I found Blue's News for gaming news, and i think it aggregates deals sometimes: https://www.bluesnews.com/
I use isthereanydeal and slickdeals for general deals.
This site is great, this is the exact sort of thing I was looking for! Headlines on what's new.
Sort of tough to look at lol, but I don't mind too much.
It's had the same basic design since the 90's. I've been going there forever.
There are settings in the left side menu to change some of the colors. Black background makes it a bit more readable.
I rather like SkillUp’s This Week in Video Games series. All news, no fluff and I often hear about games that would otherwise have passed me by from the Put this On Your Radar section. Other than that I flick between Eurogamer, PCGamer and Gamespot.
I check out Blues News, and occassionally Polygon, for everyday news and subscribe to Electric Playground Network for video version of news and reviews.
Ill sparingly visit other sites, about once a month here and there, Eurogamer, Siliconera, NintendoLife and the like.
I really like Gematsu as a source for Japanese gaming news but they cover just about everything. Their website is set up really good with useful tags for filtering. Their popular posts section and recommended articles at the end of other articles always keep me reading. The comments section usually isn't cancer.
I occasionally check out Rock Paper Shotgun and find great recommendations
I agree wholeheartedly, though I mostly listen to their weekly/biweekly podcasts. The Electronic Wireless Show and their much more recent sister podcast, Indiescovery. I’d say for these two, they are more host focus, I enjoyed listening to the banter between the hosts as they (attempt to) give the weekly happening in gaming industry.
If you want more focus on news and slightly more in depth, I also would recommend this gaming news youtuber that popped in my homepage one day. BellularNews. Other than this, there are other channels, mentioned above, like SkillUp that I listened to on occasion.
I am sorry to tell you, this week's Indiescovery was the last one for the foreseeable future as both Rachel and Rebecca are heading elsewhere.
Yeah I was behind on the podcast, and just saw the title of their latest episode after I posted my comment. Better to have and lost then to never have in the first place.
Because I game on Linux, I am subscribed to the GamingOnLinux newsletter. It is very good games journalism with a great community and I get both Linux and Gaming news in one
I listen to spawn wave and gamelinked in the background and use gg.deals to find pc game deals.
Personally, I find the day-to-day gaming news to be a little pedantic. Usually I just watch the big shows like VGAs and Summer Game Fest. When I find a game from those or somewhere else, I add it to my Steam wishlist. The I'll be notified when it comes out and if it goes on sale.
This works well for me so I don't go building a huge backlog. And if a small indie game makes headlines, I still usually see it brought up here or a recommended YouTube video.
I watch pre-game discharge by Lyle Wrath for the bigger stuff (once a month-ish show) and day to day stuff finds my way through other YouTubers I follow.
Definitely recommend the former, it’s entertaining and informative on a bunch of releases each month.
Ah, a man of culture
I love Lyle's videos for a good month-at-a-glance update
For me, Jesse Cox does Five Minute Gaming News daily, Mon-Fri, and covers releases on Mondays. He's a really good guy, and I love his other streams and playthroughs too.
He's really a beacon of positivity in a very cynical internet.
I browse r/games sometimes. Sometimes I visit game news websites like Siliconera. However, most of the time I see no game news outside of what my Youtube subscriptions decide to talk about. The real game news is the News tab on the Quake Mapping Discord so you can know the latest custom content out or in production for Quake 1. Slipseer.com is good on that front as well.
Oddly, I get a sizeable share of it through Steam's news hub by subscribing to gaming channels there -- RPS, GamingOnLinux, etc. The rest is mostly podcasts, browsing this place and a few other forums.
I mainly use Today in gaming, a gaming news aggregator from major gaming websites (you can pick which ones you want.
For indie games, I rely a bit on Youtube with MEGA the micro and a french channel called Seldell. I tried podcasts but I miss the video component.
I really enjoy the Axios Gaming newsletter by Stephen Totilo (former editor in chief of Kotaku). It covers new games and industry news and trends, and each story is presented in a brief bulleted summary that is easy to skim with links to read more if you want.
You can sign up to get it via email (https://www.axios.com/signup/gaming) or get the Axios app to read issues of it there and optionally get them as push notifications. I use the app because it has a nice built-in expand/collapse per story that makes the skimming even more quick.
With exception to the odd Tildes post I think 100% of my gaming news comes from Moist Cr1tikal on YouTube.
Do you just watch all of his videos to keep up with gaming news or does he have specific ones where he goes over that stuff ?
I just watch most of his stuff. I don’t use any social media but he seems to expect most of his audience to. So every time he starts a video it goes like “I’m sure you all know the entire _______ situation by now -“ and I’m like… uh nope “- but just in case I’ll give you the quick rundown” phew. Ha! It’s the only way I learn about any gaming or social media news (mostly drama).
I like spawn wave on YouTube for daily news
It's more of a review site, but John Walker's Buried Treasure is a good way to find out about interesting indie releases on PC.
There is a new channel from the folks at Linus Tech Tips. Game Linked.
They do videos on Tuesdays and Thursdays that are about 8ish minutes long.
I used to read /r/pcgaming and /r/nintendoswitch every day, until I gave up on Reddit. Now I'm kind of in the dark and no longer have any idea what games are coming out or what the current hype is. I'm kind of enjoying it, for the time being—no more FOMO.
Are there any similar communities in the Fediverse (i.e. kbin and Lemmy) that are actually highly active? Most of the ones I've seen only get sporadic posts.
nintendo@lemmy.world is there for my Switch news. pcgaming@kbin.social for PC games specifically. They're not very impressive but passable.
games@sh.itjust.works is pretty good for general gaming community. Kind of like r/games but not insanely strict. There's one user that does majority of posts so it can look like a repost bot community at glance but he's an actual person and there's plenty of other users posting and commenting. The rules are OK and it seems moderated well enough that I don't see anything funky.
patientgamers@sh.itjust.works are also there and active and pleasant enough. retrogaming@lemmy.world too.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Somehow it feels appropriate, since I hadn't seen that joke on Reddit in years and Tildes feels more like reddit did around that time.
