Happy Baldur's Gate 3 Day! What are you going to play?
Happy Baldur's Gate 3 Day! Just wanted to open up this thread to see what everyone will be rolling as. I haven't played any of early access, so maybe be careful on the spoilers.
I'll be playing as a stereotypical criminal human rogue, mostly because I like sneaking around and dual wielding, who is aligned maybe lawful evil (planning, scheming to get what he wants) but I want to eventually bring back to good because he realizes how much his previous life has hurt other people.
I'm interested to see what you all will be playing, and what you're most excited about!
Human lore bard by the name of Rick the Roller, he's no stranger to lore. He knows the rules, and so do I. He's always gonna pick you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna turn around and desert you!
Unironically the same...
I'm unfamiliar with D&D, so please forgive me if this question is off target, but is a 'bard' a non-combat oriented class of character? And if so, does that work in a game like BG3?
Bards have combat spells, but they're invoked with their music, dance, speech, etc. Vicious Mockery is an example of a bard spell that inflicts damage.
Fiance will be doing a Tiefling Moon Druid and I'm doing a Human GooLock (probably chain, maybe tome).
Having played EA, i'm excited just to see what they're doing with this. It's already so amazing (DoS2 with a lot of the edges polished) with the core game and super excited to just get into higher levels and see where the story is going.
I think a huge draw for me is that ALL The characters feel interesting. Some more than others, but it's even better than Wrath of the Righteous, and that also had a great pile of characters.
Halfling moon druid. I'm super excited for all the non-combat animal abilities they've included--meowing to distract people as a cat, burrowing around as a badger, etc. Plus the animations for the animals are delightful--especially climbing down ladders.
I've read that druid seems to be a bit difficult- my gf loves playing as a druid when we play DnD, how does it compare in the game?
Difficult in the sense, especially if you're unfamiliar with tabletop, that druids have a lot of spells and things to work with. They're mechanically very heavy and that tends to frustrate or overload players not used to the mechanics. They're also able to summon creatures, each with their own initiative, that tends to slow down combat and make things more complicated.
It's not difficult at all -- it has a reputation of being pretty simple, but allowing creativity. The issue is the mid level power lags. I'm still very early in the first act--just hit level 3. Larian did some work on wild shape to improve scaling, but I'm still unsure what mod game (5-10) looks like.
I do find it very annoying that I get unpredictability pulled out of wild shape by scripted interactions, costing me a short rest or handicapping me for battle.
I'm super excited for the game and am downloading now! Unfortunately, is a busy day at work, and I'll be away from my PC until monday, arg. I have deliberately avoided any kind of information or playing the EA of this game until full release. I did fire up the EA the other day to look at the awesome character creator, which hyped me up beyond belief.
I've really, really liked everything larian has been doing for years now. Divinity 1 had some issues but the vision of what they were going for as well as the in built co op from day 0 were something special. Divinity 2 they really hit it home with what the first one should have felt like and I loved the heck out of it. Sure I guess the magic/phys armor thing was a bit weird but it didn't get in the way. Then following on to that was the enhanced edition they put out for free that was awesome. I didn't have someone to play couch co op with but just the fact it was there I had earmarked playing through with my kids when they get older.
But what I love about them is I FINALLY see a game company doing what I've wondered for YEARS. Why do they not just keep building on and on to the same engine, putting in features/assets/whatever on top of it through the years for their game style? Why does each game feel like it loses features, systems and content from the previous? Why do the games not get bigger and better every year and they instead feel like a hit or miss dice roll from one to the next? I see in the game engines from divinity 1 through some of the BG 3 stuff I've seen just a continuous build up of an amazing RPG engine and it's great.
My last comment is that I was lucky enough at a PAX east a few years back to sit down and play divinity 2 early on and had Sven randomly walk over to start talking through the demo and features in it to me. I think what struck me was his personality on the videos seemed to match his IRL one, even if he was 'on' for working the booth. Just really seems like a guy that loves the CRPG and wants to make the best one possible and I really think it's going to show in this game.
I really tend to be a very cynical person at this point in my life about games so I'm really excited when a particular one gets me this hyped up and can't wait for the brief hours I have tonight before a break.
As for a character, I have no CLUE. I played a bit of solastra to experience some 5e but don't know what I'm going to go with. In past dnd games I've usually been extremely tropy and will make a human wizard, human cleric, or dwarf fighter. A part of me wants to branch out but I love the dnd memorization mechanics for wizards, making a giant tank, or making a giant tanky buff bot.
I do have an eye on the druid but may save that one for a multipayer play through with a friend. I also want to make a drow to see if they have built in needing to disguise your race (is it still like that in modern dnd?), sort of like with Fane in dos2, but may save that for further playthroughs.
Anyway excited to be back in RPG land, it'll be a good few months!
Oh God I'm so hopelessly lost.
I pulled out my Player's Handbook just to see what class/sub I want to play but I'm stuck there... far before even race comes into play, let alone background and origin.
Everything sounds great, so much so that I can't choose.
I'm thinking I should start from the ground up, base a character on origin or background and then build the class and proficiencies around that. But even then I'm flip-flopping ideas.
It's difficult!
That's pretty much what I'm going to do, and honestly if it doesn't work out and the class/background I chose is boring, I'll just roll another character! I don't think that playing around with a bunch of different classes/races is a bad idea
Luckily there's a respec option if your class is disappointing. So no need to fully start again.
I’ve played a bunch of RPGs but I feel a little overwhelmed with all the options in this game. I don’t mind it actually, all these options is really cool, but I feel like the game needs a little more tutorial help in the beginning. I’m finding the camera a little clunky because you can’t adjust the angle without zooming.
Wild Magic or Storm sorcerer... Still doubting which one will be best. I'm so excited!!! I'm also looking forward to play as one of the Origin characters in the coop game I'm hoping to play with my friends.
Dragonborn bard, maybe.. Not exactly sure yet, I've ignored anything related to game so I don't know anything going in.
Started as Dark Urge moon druid but after playing a bit I've decided to save that for a second playthrough and am going to restart as a sorcer going for necromancy without dark urge. I'm really gonna have to force myself to stick to it though, any game with as many class choices with as much variety as this really gives me restart-itis. I'm hoping my obsession with necromancers in games pushes me through.
I have emerged from the depths of my man cave to report that in my first solo game I'm playing a Deep Gnome Gloomstalker Ranger with the Bounty Hunter and Urban Tracker specialties to make me something of an off-Rogue. I do this with like, every character. Something about me just won't let a door stay locked.
In my multiplayer game with friends I'm going to be playing a Rogue/Monk to abuse the extra bonus action from the Thief subclass in order to make 5+ attacks in a round with flurry of blows.
I think I’m going to play a female tiefling warlock for my first play through.
Although a male gnome bard is tempting too.
However tieflings and warlocks are always my go to on the tabletop so I think I need to play that in the game.
What draws you to tieflings? I've almost always played an elf or human in tabletop
Ahhh. I had a moment, I actually meant to write Drow not Tiefling.
Drow are my favorite because I’ve always been drawn to their aesthetic, both their appearance and culture is edgy and gothic which I love.
Tieflings are actually my second favorite race, because I love the look they have with the crazy colored skin and horns. And I’m a big fan of the idea of having a tainted bloodline that made you that way.
I really want to try multi-classing after trying all the single sub-classes in early access. Maybe Sorcerer 8/Warlock 2/Fighter 2 for a blaster build or maybe an attempt at a hexblade pally without the hexblade with something like Warlock 3/Paladin 9.
Of the single classes I tried out I really liked a Battlemaster Archer dex based character as well. Knowing my playstyle, I’ll probably get all of those up to around level 5 or something before deciding. I’ve played so much early access I can do act 1 in my sleep now.
I'm stuck between a wizard specializing in necromancy or a paladin that becomes an oath breaker. Going to wait and see what comes naturally to me once I get to character creation.
I'm SO excited to play. I've got to wait until tomorrow night so I can start with my partner.
I'm going to play a female Tiefling bard named Lyric. I'm planning on giving her albino colouring and my background for her is she was abandoned as a baby with a traveling entertainment troupe. So she considers herself to have many parents and to have a connection with a wide variety of races. She's deeply curious and wants to experience as much as she can.
The hard part is deciding what instrument to take!
I'll have to see what Monk looks like when I get into the live game, but otherwise looking at a half-elf ranger with a focus on Bounty Hunter and ranged weapons. Hopefully the investigative skills have a lot of RP flavor in the story choices. I only played early access for the first month, so I haven't touched it in over two years and can't remember a lot.
First attempt was with a monk. Went ok; they certainly have some nice offensive advantages in combat, but I have no clue what the long-term outlook is with one.
Looking at playing a wood elf warlock because the contradiction between wood elves connection to nature and a warlock making pacts with outer gods is funny to me.
My wife has been talking about a halfling bard from a street urchin background. A halfling urchin is also really funny to me and she just recently started playing DnD with our group so it will be fun to see what she thinks of Baldurs Gate.
Going to play my DnD character, Human Druid of the Land, really excited, hopefully the game is ready for release and not a buggy mess.
I'm really hoping this too, especially since they're releasing it earlier than initially planned.
I played an elf sorcerer in EA, but considering a wizard or something.
Drow Seldarin rogue, red eyes, scar on his face, gravelly voice. Gotta let my inner edgelord out every once in a while.
Loving the game so far though, the soundtrack in particular is outstanding. The "down, down, down by the river" motif used throughout the soundtrack is really cool. Ties it all together.
Since I’ve only ever been a DM in real life I was super looking forward to playing a character based on the 5e ruleset. In all games I basically default to righteous good nature, so the logical choice was a Paladin, but as a race I took a Wood Elf woman named Caelynn Nailo. Like the hag said „Paladins are drier than a shit in the sun“ but so far I quite like it. Next I’m definitely gonna play a gnome or halfling rogue though - or I just play Astarion, but since I have him in my party it’s maybe not that interesting after finishing the game.
Am I the only one who picked one of the story characters? (Gale) I want to see how his background develops.
In my co-op game with my fiancee I'm playing my naive, friendship obsessed half orc barbarian named Heidi. She's very sweet and nice but gets really really angry when you threaten or hurt her friends.
In my solo session, I'm playing a gnome wizard that I'm intending to be "evil-smart" if I can stick with it.
