I posted this because 90% is a pretty incredible discount, and I think The Talos Principle is a pretty incredible game. It’s a wonderful, thoughtful first-person puzzler. I don’t want to overhype it, but it’s up there for me with Portal, The Witness, and Quern as a pinnacle of the genre.

Also, like other games of its type, I highly recommend you avoid looking up information about the game. You can spoil some pretty significant stuff for yourself if you do.

It looks like the sale is a promo for the upcoming sequel, which worked for me, because I had no idea it was coming out until now.

If you’ve played The Talos Principle, let people know what you thought, but please hide/mark all spoilers!

I have an appetite for game deals, especially when it comes with thoughtful comments about said game. Thanks for the heads up!

/r/GameDeals was (maybe still is?) something special. The comments there often had a way of cutting through noise to give clear, succinct assessments of games. It was as much a mini game review board as it was a gamedeals one, and I trusted the collective judgment there far more than I did any other source (e.g. Metacritic, Steam reviews, etc.)

I simultaneously like and don’t like the idea of gamedeals here on Tildes.

I like it because it’s very much my scene still and I miss r/GameDeals. I’d also love if we had the kind of thoughtful commentary here that I used to get there. The weekly What Have You Been Playing topics are nice, but they’re scattered. I liked how gamedeals would focus the conversation on specific games — often ones that weren’t big enough to get their own discussions elsewhere.

I also don’t like the idea of gamedeals on Tildes, though, because I genuinely love that Tildes is one of the few places on the internet that I know of where people can gather and interact without being pressured to buy things. I always feel a little scummy posting gamedeals here, and try to reserve those posts for either genuinely outstanding deals on outstanding games, or ones that have a parallel good (e.g. charity bundles).

I personally wouldn’t be opposed to a weekly/monthly megathread where we post deals, but I’d want to hear from other people first. Putting anything consumer-driven on Tildes feels a bit off even to me, and I imagine many other people here have even stronger negative feelings on it.

Is it something we could have like a weekly megathread for? Folks who aren't interested can hide the post/ignore it, people can share deals they find, etc. One thing that gamedeals definitely did...

One thing that gamedeals definitely did right was to not allow referral links, which I'm not sure whether/how that could be applied in this case.

But something I really miss for sure from reddit is the weekly discussion on the Epic free game, which is usually something I've never heard of and would've missed otherwise.

It's definitely very tricky, especially since GameDeals was a lot of companies posting as well, which was fine because it was understood that it was companies posting. I'll still check it once in a while but I do feel like it's fallen in quality a bit in the threads I looked through.

I feel like maybe something like a monthly/biweekly thing might be cool, especially if it's emphasized that it's individual consumers posting and asking whether or not something is worth it or posting their own mini reviews.

The Talos Principle is an incredible game because of its story. I'm a sucker for Nolan's Person of Interest (and the subsequent Westworld)… TTP was incredible in its delivery of what consciousness and intelligence is. Where I've forgotten so many games' storylines, I still remember many of the most intricate details of the Talos Principle almost a decade later. And I haven't even played it.

id also recommend The Swapper and The Fall (+ the Fall unbound) if anyone reading is into consciousness and AI goodness. These really affected me when i was a teenager and i havent seen much games even attempt to do tackle similar subjects. The Turing Test comes close but it has some rough edges.

This game is so good. It's got great puzzles with great environments and narrative mixed in. I've never played a game that has nailed this balance so well. For comparison, The Witness and Braid have great puzzles I'd put in the same ballpark but they do not have the great balance with environments and story as the Talos Principle.

I originally played most of the game while voice-chatting with a friend playing through the game in sync with me. We'd work together on the puzzles, playing it as a sort-of coop game despite it not having multiplayer. One funny thing is we would both form mental images of seeing each other's characters where we described each other being and we've both briefly misremembered it at times as actually being a coop game after the fact.

Finding all of the hidden stars in the game felt magical. The game's style of secrets is very satisfying. The DLC is a good encore too, though I definitely had a bit less energy to put into 100%ing the DLC's secret stars which weren't as interesting.

For me, The Talos Principle really delivered on what I wanted out of The Witness: if a game's going to wax philosophical at me I'd really like it to making a point or going somewhere with it's story. It's one of a very small number of games where the story has made me emotional to the point of tears.

It held up far better than I expected when I later replayed it with the alternate Serious Sam voice replacing Elohim, and it alleviated some of the repetitivness of playing a game for a second time. I'm really looking forward to the sequel, though I do wonder if it'll manage to keep the same quality as the first.

The Talos Principle is absolutely one of my top ten favourite games. The puzzles are insanely fun and there were some proper head scratchers. There's also a metric ton of easter eggs hidden around, some easy to find and some that are very well hidden.

The story is very cerebral though and is one of the reasons I loved it so much. It's ponderings on life, consciousness, sentience and what it means to be human made it an unforgettable and beautiful experience.

I'm incredibly hyped for the sequel.

My only negative was that the game gave me serious motion sickness, even with the "reduce motion sickness" settings dialed to the max. The fact that it has those settings suggests to me there's some underlying issue. I've never had that problem with any other game.

Thanks for the heads up. I am very prone to motion sickness (even The Witness and Obduction made me ill), so it looks like I should pass this one up.

    BUY IT!!!

Talos Principle is absolutely unbelievable game. It is the first game that, after finishing it, left me with desire to actually thank developers for making it. And I went out of my bubble to find some contact and actually written them a "thank you" message with some thought about the game.

If you think this is puzzle game that seems to be extra expensive, you are wrong. It is puzzle game, but if you read the ingame messages and listen to audio logs, it becomes whole new experience! You still have to solve puzzles but you are driven by the background story to do so and advance, not only by yourself wanting to finish all levels. There are three special levels that are absolutely breathtaking! I just stood there looking at what developers made with absolute awe!

I bought it in such 90% sale and after finishing it, I'm actually ashamed that I haven't paid full price for such masterpiece. And this comes from someone who actually buys games in sales 95% of the time.

    BUY IT!!!

It was given out for free by Epic Games some time ago, so if you've been getting all the games they've been handing out, you might have already it in your library.

If you've liked the Serious Sam games and might do a second playthrough of the game at some point, the Serious DLC is worth it for the option of having very different voice lines. (I wouldn't recommend using it for a first playthough though, it dramatically changes the tone to something much sillier.)
