My favorite build so far has been my Monk build. I'm playing way of the open hand with the movement feat. I can move around the battlefield like nobody's business. The biggest downside is that it makes playing as slower characters feel so frustrating, lol. It's not a very complicated build, but I find it very fun especially once you get some good magic items. I have been considering going 3 levels into roque to get the thief subclass for the extra bonus action, as mentioned in the article, but I haven't done it yet. It sounds quite good though.

My other favorite build has been a light domain cleric, so many powerful options. Very fun.

I have a gloomstalker/assassin build like the one mentioned in the article, but I have not enjoyed it as much as my other builds. Not that it's bad, it's pretty good actually... Not sure what it is exactly that turns me off from the build, it's a little boring to play I guess and I am somewhat frustrated at the pointlessness of the longbows in this game, when I really want to use longbows with my ranger. I get why Larian made longbows this way, but man is the lack of range frustrating and prevents them from operating in their own niche. It seems to me it's always better to use a crossbow, which confuses me and makes me not want to use a longbow. I guess there is no reason I can't just use a crossbow and be happy, but it kinda kills the character archetype I have in my mind.

I used the Mr. Know-It-All (Sorc 1, Cleric 1, Bard 10) build, and greatly enjoyed it. It was not the most amazing character in combat, but has excellent support and utility spells. Its skills are also min-maxed to the extreme, so it was amazing at passing every skill check with relative ease. I hate missing out on content due to failing skill checks, or lacking the correct utility spells, so it was perfect for my first playthrough.

My next playthrough I intend to go for a more combat focused, Dark Urge, Oathbreaker Paladin character though, which is supposedly a lot of fun to play. And it will also allow me to see all the "evil" content I missed in my first run.

I wish I had saved paladin for playing durge. I'm going to have to figure something else out. Thinking wizard maybe?

Evocation pure Wizard can definitely get nuts. I kept Gale as a pure wiz, specced him into Evoc, and he was my powerhouse companion for sure. I kept him in my party for the vast majority of the game.

That's what I'm playing right now. I love wizards in tabletop. Pretty happy with the decision because the martial companions are my favorite so far.

You summon 4 fungal zombies from Spore Druid, 2 ice mephits, a water elemental, a dryad, a wood woad and skeletons from animate dead, buff their HP with a high ranked Aid or Heros Feast spell and have a really tanky army build.

My curiousity about multi-classing makes me want to run a bard & sorceror build, but on the other hand I also don't want to miss out on the top-level skills for each class and I'm not sure how many levels I should put into each.

If I did multi-class, I'd probably want to do it for all party members, just for funsies. Any recommendidos as to whether it's better to stick with one class or mix it up?

No idea really. But one thing to keep in mind is that the game maxes out on level 12 or so.

I’m multiclassing a bard + enchantment wizard, basically in my head she is a hypnotist mass manipulator cult leader sort of person, it’s fun. It’s my first character build so I don’t know how it stacks up next to the other classes.

I do have another playthrough I’m running in parallel, this one is a hulking brute of a berserker barbarian. Oh, and I respecced my whole party to be the same. It’s my character (a remorseless Dark Urge build) teamed up with barbarian Astarion, barbarian Lae’zel, and barbarian Minthara wreaking destruction everywhere we go. That’s actually a ton of fun. Every locked door or chest I encounter, I just smash it open.

    I completed two playthroughs:

    • Monk, Open Hand. Very solid even without min/maxing at all. Slap some of the elemental +damage items and it adds up quick. Trip attack and then wail on your prone enemy.
    • Ranger 5/Thief Rogue 7 dualling hand crossbows with Sharpshooter. A very popular build. Four attacks a turn, each at +10 damage from Sharpshooter. Toward the endgame, she had enough bonuses to attacks that she wasn't missing any shots due to the -5 to attack for sharpshooter except against extremely armored foes. Regularly doing 80-100+ damage a round.
    • Wyll as sorlock is solid. Warlock 3/Sorc 9. I had him as wild magic sorc and Karlach as wild magic barbarian for some fun times.

I just started a third playthrough, all bard. Everyone is a bard. This is silly. Lae'zel can still use greatswords. Everything is silly.

I've been running an all bard campaign in BG3 as well, and it's everything I hoped for. My character, Karlach, Shadowheart, and Will are all playing different instruments, and when we are each done with our turns in combat we take the free action to play the same song and the game is good enough to sync them all up with each other. I just wish we could sing as well as playing the lute / drum / flute and the like.

My latest Drow/Ranger/Dark Urge build was really fun to play with. Her hit rates were almost guaranteed which combined with sharpshooter feat put out quite the damage. Especially if you use it with haste + bloodlust + d. urge cloak it can wipe the floor easily.

Her stats were 23/20/23/16/8 with 24 AC ( Dexterity to AC armor sold in Act 2 with a +3 shield ), so she was unkillable as well.

I could have increased wisdom above 16 if I had reset strength and const. to 8 as well but I didn't bother. Though strength glove was a bit unnecessary since I rarely hit in melee.

I have the most fun when I play the game without min/maxing or looking up builds. The game is easy enough where you can just do whatever you want and still be able to finish the game.

My advice to anyone is to just do whatever you think is fun and not pay too much attention to what other people say is fun. You can try anything because respec is basically free.

I must have respecced my Tav at least 50 times by now. If money is an issue you can just steal it back, Withers doesn't care.

On the first playthrough, definitely! If the game gets stale, or players want to try a harder difficulty, it might be a good idea to look up some tips.

I've been having too much fun with throwing in early game on Karlach. Pick up the Ring of Flinging, Tavern Brawler, and the Returning Pike and go to town. Add a potion of haste and elixir of bloodlust and the goblin encounters got pretty hilarious even on Tactical. We're doing a no-worms playthrough but I imagine adding Displacement would make it even more diabolical.

That's how I built my Karlach too. Goddess of throwing. There are lots of really good bombs and thrown utility items you can find, buy, and craft. And by speccing her into Berserker to unlock Enraged Throw, so she can throw random objects and even enemies with a bonus action, she gets insanely fun to play in combat. Yeeting barrels into enemies, and enemies into other enemies or off ledges/cliffs, was super satisfying. :P

I had a lot of fun with a Tiefling Way of Shadows monk. There was a lot of ability overlap, and it was far from optimal, but you get a whole bucket of tools for stealth and movement. By late game I could teleport anywhere around combats almost at-will, as long as the environment wasn't brightly lit, and if that didn't work I could jump across the room anyway. I took some feats that let me use a greatsword as a monk weapon and did a ton of damage even on turns where I'd used bonus actions for something other than flurry of blows.
