Another example would be Hytale, created by the team behind one of the larger servers for Minecraft. It's not out yet but I believe it's a very hyped game.

At first I could not see the appeal to Minecraft at all. It's a game about bloody blocks, how fun can it be? And the graphics look cheap too!

However, it was the only thing a few friends were playing at the time. I didn't want to constantly play other games by myself and hearing them having fun in Minecraft.

So I decided to buy it and I have no regrets. Have had such an amazing experience playing this game, building stuff, going on adventures, fooling around. There is a lot of variation in the game: Grinding, fighting, building, crafting, farming.

After a while you even get to see the visual beauty of the game. When you've been fighting monsters all night and the sun rises over some hills. Or the nostalgic music that slowly starts in the background.

It's a very well rounded game. I should play it again :)

But needless to say, I have played a lot lot lot of it too. At one LAN party my friends and I even played it for like 12+ hours a day for 5 days straight. :P

I don't play it at all these days though and haven't for a few years now, but I am really looking forward to Hytale. Hopefully it can recapture some of the Minecraft magic and rekindle my and my friends' interest in these types of games. We shall see.

I've personally burnt myself out on it from literal years of playing it tho, so I just can't see myself going back to it anymore, but otherwise it's still such a good game.

I'm sure that if I played it more I could figure stuff out, but a nice PDF manual would go a long ways. Have they ever decided to start including one? I know that it gets updated a lot, but last time I checked players were left to discover this stuff on their own and I never discovered it. I'm not one to consult the Internet to figure out how to do stuff, which it seems like Minecraft expects you to do.

If you haven't played in a while, a not so recent addition is a recipe book that you unlock gradually by playing and running into different types of blocks and items.

Besides this, the only challenging aspect I see would be redstone, which is not necessary to enjoy the game, it's simply a mean to automate some simple things like doors and traps. There's also an official wiki that has a lot of decent information.

Initially, Minecraft was not designed to learn things naturally by just playing, the crafting recipes were always available on the internet and that's how the initial player base got used to things. Of course, it's different now and worth a shot. However, it's fair to state that the game is simply not for everyone. Some enjoy it, others don't.

I don't know if you are one to watch tutorials/playthroughs, but Pixlriffs' Minecraft Survival Guide really helped me. He has that rare combination of being entertaining (without being obnoxious) and being really informative. He has it broken down into a different subject for each video, so if there's something specific you want to learn you can just watch that video. But it's also a playthrough, so there is a narrative through line to watching the videos in order.

One of the all time great games. I think it's going to be one of those games we pick in 5, 10, 20, 40 years time, play for a few days/weeks and then put down for years. A game we show our kids and they will like if not love it the same way we do.

My own experience with it is was i heard about the game on some forums i visited but didn't pay much attention until Seananners released a video on it and i instantly bought it. I spent a few weeks playing it, built a castle, did some mining, found some diamonds etc. then stopped playing, then picked it up, rinse repeat every few months. I mostly played solo, i joined a couple of servers but they were too busy and too many griefers and i liked minecraft for the almost meditative effect when playing it.

It's going through a little rehype at the moment because of the birthday and i hopped on the train and played my first game in 5 years (last save was 2014). It's still very fun, lots of stuff that wasn't in it when i last played it, the recipe book thing is a God send. My main complaint is that they added a bunch of stuff to nearly everything except MINING. There is coral, shipwrecks, bamboo, chocolate, horses, traders, villages, wandering tribes men, underwater zombies, flowers, vegetables, carpets, etc. but mining still feels exactly like it did 5 years ago. You mine enough for iron, then you find enough diamond for a pick ax and sword and you are basically done with mining which is a real shame as it was always my favourite part.

The Twitch app has a whole lot of modpacks that are as easy to get into as just telling it to install, and it'll set up the proper version of MInecraft, install all the mods, everything. By far the easiest modded game experience out there.

It was a huuuge part of my teen years, and always seems to creep back in to my life every now and then. Dorm friends had a server, high school buddies would run one, and I ran a few myself as well. Everyone I played games with had a server. Every now and then one would just kinda pop up. Me and a few of those friends just created a new server not too long ago, maybe a month or so ago! It's nice to have a sort of place to go that has such a friendly and nostalgic presence to it.

It's good stuff. I was one of the many who picked it up again in the last year after not playing for many, it's changed a lot and not always for the better, I really don't like the drowned spawning, for example. Every so often I'll be working away in my house or something and 20 or so will spawn in a really small body of water, talking like 2*5, and that many just kill you instantly even with iron armour on.

Kinda excited for Minecraft earth though. Microsoft probably won't drop the ball as hard as Pokémon go did, based on how they've developed the game so far.

Same story here. Quit for a little while and recently came back. I can't stand the water anymore. Swimming makes getting out of the water take ~3 seconds to get back to a standing position, sometimes you'll cross a tiny lake you could mostly jump over, but you'll swim, which takes a bunch of pointless time.

Then the spawns you're talking about are also annoying, mainly for the reasons you said, though I've not seen that many before, and I'm playing on Hard. Still, giving them Trident's? With full iron armor on Hard, they take away 4 hearts. It's insane! And traveling with horses becomes such an ordeal when you have to deal with water, though that's it's always been that way.

They have added some nice things to the water though. Swimming is faster than “walking” through it, and dolphins make it even faster. Kelp is self-sustainable; you can cook kelp with kelp, and eat it. Boats are nicer, they no longer break if you hit blocks. And water temples sound neat, though I've not found one yet.

The various structures really improve the game imo, I was blown away by the haunted mansion when I started trading with the villagers. Took me 6 in-game days travel to get out there, but that was actually pretty fun. I think the drowned spawns have the potential to screw up if you have many many small bodies of water around, but I haven't figured it out.

I've done so, so much bonding with my son through minecraft. I think we started playing when he was 5 and I was 39. It's just so much fun! Initially it mostly consisted of me trying to builds stuff and him basically digging big holes and robbing all my stuff, or blowing shit up once he discovered dynamite.
But within a year we were going on adventures together, exploring caves, slaying monsters, building castles and things, learning to farm stuff.
It's been great. The graphics sound and music are exactly as good as they need to be, and it's an amazing atmosphere when we're both playing together on a cold winters night with a mug of hot chocolate and marshmallows.
    A thoroughly wholesome game!!
When he turned 8 I got him a subscription to code kingdom, and he's had fun since learning to make his own mods. It's a really great site for kids who are interested in coding, really well done.

Now he's really into fortnite, and that's not my thing at all, but we still play minecraft together (among other things) from time to time. It's a great game.

The best experience was when I played on a multiplayer server with an 18+ crowd, built huge cities and overall had a lot of fun time. Still pretty sad that it's activity declined and it disbanded, but such is life I suppose.

In a way it also has helped me with my career choices; when I started doing textures at some point and helping out with mods (I'm an easter egg in Chisel2!) and while playing them I realized I liked design and engineering, and now am doing an industrial product design course @ uni partially due to that. It's very fun and while I may not play it continuously, I'll always play on a server with friends at least once a year for a few weeks.

It's OK. I think some of it's clones offer better playability. It's got some irritating problems that always bothered me, most of which involve the randomness of the world generator. Towns have been a part of the game for years, but I only found one for the first time about a month ago. Your initial spawn point may be in a poor location with few resources, which can make the beginning of your game very frustrating. Some things I think are simply too scarce. Redstone especially.

The other thing that bothers me is that movement over long distances is really painful. The best way to go long distances is with minecarts with redstone tracks, but those are extremely resource-intensive, making them a less than ideal solution.

Though to be honest, a lot of my complaints about the game have been fixed in more recent versions. For instance, it was really annoying to have to hoard coal all of the time, and then they introduced charcoal.

Something people often seem to forget is Nether rails; since traveling 2 chunks in there corresponds to 16 kn the overworld, rails can be made much shorter to get to the desired place.

I like watching Minecraft YouTubers (like Hermitcraft), and a lot of them work on things that diminish those limitations. Witch farms help with redstone, for example, turning it into a renewable resource. Travel becomes much easier with elytra and frictionless ice tunnels in the nether with boats. (On the Hermitcraft server at the moment they are making a railway system, but it's more for fun since everyone flies everywhere. The train is the scenic route~)

That's actually what I enjoy about watching Minecraft (I don't play much anymore). Seeing people develop solutions to these problems is neat. Definitely not for everyone, though - there's a reason I watch people build giant ice farms instead of doing it myself, haha.

I love Minecraft. I love it enough to have bought it more than once. I play hours and hours alone; I play hours and hours with my child. We do a mix of collaborative creative builds, and some survival where he loves to troll me. I've spent more time in Minecraft than any other game except maybe Total Annihilation.

When I'm playing alone I use superflat worlds set to hardcore mode. If you remove most of the layers so you have a single dirt / sand layer but leave structures on you have to survive by running to a vliiage to loot it, then run to the next village to fortify it with the stuff you looted.

So, the versions I've bought: one Java version for me; two mobile versions for me and him; two copies of the xbox one disc version for me and him; one version of the xbox one version (only one because he qualified for a free copy of this version), and one copy of the Windows 10 version (or maybe MS gave that to me for free?). This is a ridiculous number of copies of a game to buy.

I am a bit worried about the insane amount of monetisation that MS has managed to cram into the not-Java versions of the game. Skins are something you buy rather than make; maps are something you buy rather than find and download. That would be okay if they had great quality control, but they don't. Some of those maps are expensive and hot garbage.

    But yes, I love Minecraft.
