This is honestly, the most beautiful looking movie that Illumination has ever made. It’s incredible how much their tech has improved considering they started off as the “cheap as possible” animated business.

As far as the actual movie, it looks fine. I’m sure it’ll get mixed-positive reviews, if Minions: The Rise of Gru got relatively positive reception from critics this probably will too.

All in all, it probably makes a billion dollars.

Honestly it’s getting kind of hard to tell what things are expensive when it comes to animated movies.

Generally speaking, the things that are most expensive are the things that take the most human time. The more impressive things in this trailer are mixtures of partical effects and physics simulations, which is to say that humans give direction but the computers are actually doing the animation.

The places where illumination generally saves the most money is in copy-pasting models and limiting the environments they have to create to simple indoor shots or relatively small outdoor areas. Compare this to Moana where every villager was unique and they actually modeled the entire island of Motu Nui.

Though to be frank it’s not the cost savings that bother me about Illumination’s productions. By all means animated movies should be made on more of a budget and the Disney way of producing them is arguably very wasteful. The thing that bothers me with illumination is that they simply aren’t great at storytelling.

I’ll watch this movie, but in 5 years time I will probably remember it with as much detail as I do the Peanuts movie now.

Maybe I'm a bit dim, but it looks like "competent 2020s CGI" to me. Good, 100%. Solid. Above average. But it doesn't strike me as phenomenal.

I've always felt Illumination's rendering was pretty good. Where they save a ton of money is on environments and character designs. They limit the number of unique locales in their films, and background characters are often copy+pasted and given a palette swap. They also don't try to push anything new. Most Pixar and Disney Animation Studios films spend a hefty amount of money developing technology that enables some new effect. Cars pushed ray tracing, Frozen invested heavily in making realistic snow, etc.

That sounds honestly pretty ideal for a Mario movie in an animated style, where we'd expect a bunch of background characters with minor palette swaps.

I meant to mention the R&D aspect a while back, but I completely forgot about it. Honestly, this is one of my favorite pages on the internet.

To give another example, Monster's Inc was a big push in realistic CGI hair because of Sully's fur.

I liked the trailer. Bowser seemed badass, which I love to see, and the humor seemed on-point for Mario. The only negative thing I can really say is that I don't like that it's just Chris Pratt's regular voice. Still think using Charles Martinet would've been preferred, but idk maybe people are right that the voice wouldn't work well for a full-length film. Heck even Chris Pratt with a Brooklyn accent as a nod to the 80s/90s cartoons would've been preferable over "hey it's me, Chris Pratt".

He does have a Brooklyn accent near the end of the trailer (when they do the wide shot of the Mushroom Kingdom) but he really does just sound like Chris Pratt still.

I was just expecting straight-voiced Chris Pratt, but he at least rubbed a little Brooklyn into the character which made it alright. Keegan Michael-Key as Toad sounded pretty solid, too.

A lot of the hate that Pratt gets is over-correction from the mid-2010s when he was getting called the next Harrison Ford (despite not possessing the talent that Ford has).

Didn't know that. But I'll say this: Harrison Ford is probably one of the most overrated actors that I happen to love.

The character designs are really unsettling as well but otherwise it's visually...fine, I guess.

Then again, I'm old enough to remember Mario having a Brooklyn accent, so maybe my view is skewed.

Isn't Bowser usually sillier than this in the games?

Anyone else getting strong Mushroom Hill Zone vibes from their take on the Mushroom Kingdom?
