I tend to stay out of super hero movie discussions because the films are not for me, but I recognise other people do enjoy them and that means my comments feel like I'm just dumping on something they like -- being pointlessly mean.

But, here goes: I'm bored of 3 very basic films getting endlessly reskinned and churned out. I'm bored of the knowing winks to the last film. I'm bored of the lore making that 3rd film in the trilogy incomprehensible unless you've watched the first two, but then not being any good even if you have watched the first two. I'm so so bored of the lack of creativity or originality. I find it frustrating that very simple concepts get elevated as if they're real deep thoughts (hey, what if the good guys were bad? Hey, who watches the watchmen? Hey, with great power comes great responsibility) -- it's just embarrassing seeing people quote these as if they're quoting Aristotle or Wittgenstein.

Maybe the only good thing is they pay actors well, and those actors use the money to work on smaller more interesting films either as actors or producers or directors or commissioners or whatnot.

What next after superhero movies? Literally anything would be better.

People said that about the Zombie genre before Superheroes came along. And then the same thing happened with Superheroes.

Here's my guess. Not sure how to define this genre exactly, but I'll drop a few keywords that I think might capture the genre: Liminal spaces, dark, night time, synth music, nostalgia. I see a lot of different mediums that are all circling around these things right now. Here's a short list:

-There are a bunch of "night drive" and "dreamscape" style music playlists out there. Seem to be more and more popular.

-Movies like Bladerunner 2049 and The Corner Office. Even Dune can fall into this category.

-Shows like Severance or Stranger Things

-Video games like The Backrooms, The Long Drive, Pacific Drive, Lethal Company, etc.

-General audiences becoming more aware of things like liminal spaces and the Backrooms through tik toks, reels, and forums like Reddit.

Liminal Horror might be a big thing. There are parts of The Empty Man that have liminal elements, and while they don't lean into it too heavily it works well.

I remember watching a video essay about how horror reflects the general fear of the society that consumes it (i.e. zombie movies reflecting the fear of incompetent government and being attacked from within post 9/11). I wonder what his analysis would be for liminal horror being a new trend.

The horror twist in a space that feels safe, desirable and from a "simpler" time is both fulfilling a fantasy and denying it. Grieving it and moving on. At least that's my take.

Honestly probably video game adaptations. We've had a lot of stinkers over the years but the last few have seen some good ones gain popularity.

    Sonic, Super Mario Bros, Fallout

And inevitably it will follow the same trend as superhero films. A few big hits send Hollywood spiraling trying to chase infinite money streams that don't exist and inevitably lead to shittier and shittier productions until we're back where we started. Along the way will be a few gems and actually enjoyable shows or movies but the vast majority will be pretty bad.

Just like the superhero trend that started with a lot of bad adaptations, a few good ones came along and changed everyone's viewpoint and then they overdid it trying to chase the money.

    Same cycle, different genre

Tangent: I was always more into video games than movies in high school and college, but I've had some success recently buying thrift shop DVDs for titles I remember hearing about. So I basically missed the entire super hero trend while it was popular. Can you recommend any specific movies from the genre that have self-contained stories and would be fun to watch to someone new?

This guy is very irritating, with a whiny nasal voice that is what you have in your head when someone says "internet video nerd", and that is a very click-bait title.

So I skipped to 10 minutes from the end.

Half in jest he says pirate movies, peg legs and treasure, then capitulates and says "honestly there is no clear answer". Gah! Then he says "you have to train people to go back to the movies". Well, that is not gonna happen. Cinemas are closing down, everyone just waits for streaming now, or does other stuff (games, tiktok, TV). Then, just when you think he's going to say something profound about indie films, it turns into a bait-and-switch advert for his sponsor, some streaming platform nobody has heard of.

Terrible video, don't encourage him by clicking on it.

So you don't like his voice, the title, and you skipped 50 minutes of an hour video? Forgive me, but this doesn't seem like a fair criticism in the slightest.

I don't think it's fair to judge a whole video based on just its final moments. I watched through the whole thing and while the skits are extremely cheesy, he does present what feel like some potentially viable (or not) follow ups to the current deluge of superhero movies. Of course he doesn't know what is truly going to take off, because no one can truly predict the future. What's offered in the video are areas that show promise (or not), backed up by reasons why he feels they may or may not be the next big thing in cinema.

I don't really like his comedy skits etc. and that's why I don't watch him but what I've seen of him he usually has something of interest to say. Whether it's something I agree is another thing but his videos tend to be well produced and he isn't just shitting them out. Like complaining about clickbaits implies (to me).

"What's next after superhero movies?" [...] "nobody knows what's next after superhero movies"

These are almost identical in supposed levels of clickbait (which is very low) but they're not equivalent in meaning.

I fail to see how asking a question is click bait. Clickbaiting the title would be something like "What's next after superhero movies? YOU'LL NEVER GUESS!!", with a thumbnail from a superhero movie that has a random red circle on it somewhere.

How is that unclickbaited? The video isn't about not knowing what's next, it's about potential trends. (Edit. Both titles are ambiguous to me, and I guess clickbait to you?) You can take my word...

You can take my word for not being his fan or not, I don't know how to prove it other than saying his videos aren't to my liking. What I do like is fair criticism and yours doesn't seem like it is. I don't know what to say but you give a big first day on the internet energy or I need to complain about something energy.

I am neither a fan nor the opposite of the channel, but I think calling this clickbait is very incorrect.

Clickbait typically must include a misrepresentation, hyperbolization, or some other form of sensationalism of the topic to entice people to click on it. "What's next after Superhero movies" is just a topic. There's barely any enticement to watch it, as it seems like it's just going to be an hour long discussion on what trends are likely to follow superhero movies. From the discussion here, it seems like it was a long discussion, with some attempts at humour, of what could follow the trend of superhero movies.

I think your dislike for the creator is valid, but I don't think it's valid to call the title clickbait, at all. It's not compelling.
