Theory: All children love Darude - Sandstorm
All parents please report back. My children lost their damn minds.
For best effect, followup with:
Rednex - Cottoneye Joe
The HampsterDance Song
Eiffel 65 - Blue
Also known as : Half of a middle school dance playlist from the 90s. Just need Macarana and Mmm Bop to wrap it.
Can't speak to Sandstorm but my nephew turned two in December goes hard for Crab Rave
I'm 35 and I go pretty hard for crab rave.
Reminds of me Tachikomas for some reason.
Something about the clicking sounds in this song reminded me of Who's Afraid of Detroit by Claude VonStroke.
I don't have kids, but I was a kid when that track released.
And I can confirm that it made me lose my damn mind.
I'm not waking them up to try now but there's a 99% chance my five year old won't go for it. They are currently into The White Stripes, First Aid Kit and hardcore old school jungle. They have never, even from an early age and despite my best efforts, been into pounding housey beats. Will try tomorrow after school if I can, just to be sure though.
I was just starting to go to nightclubs and field raves and discovering the substances that go with that when Sandstorm came out and my mind was at that point completely lost.
Update: "Daddy I don't want to have this song"
When my daughter was four or five, her favorite song was the White Stripe's cover of Jolene. One day she asked me what the song is about, so I told her, "The song is about a lady singing who is unhappy with another lady because that lady is doing something mean."
Her: "What is she doing that's mean?"
Me: "It's complicated. I may have to explain it to you when you are older."
She thinks this over for a while, and comes back with, "I think she got her favorite toy and took it home with her."
Me: "That's ... close enough. Go with that."
HAHA when I was a kid, I really loved the song "Sugar Magnolia" by the Grateful Dead. My mom asked me one day what I thought "We can discover the wonders of nature/Rolling in the rushes down by the riverside" meant and I was like, "well, obviously they're looking for cool bugs and plants and stuff," and I was so confident in this answer that it made no sense why she'd ask me such a stupid question 😂
My 16yo said "anthem of 2012"
2012?
That track was a staple of my high school back in ‘05
The kid isn’t wrong though - the song had a huge second wave of popularity starting in 2013 thanks to Twitch chat:

I can confirm this. I graduated in 2014. My first hand experience of nonstop sandstorm will haunt me forever. Then of course Arin from game grumps losing it to that song a few years ago brought it back for my friends again.
My kids only lose their minds to Running in the 90s.
Didn't discover the magnetic attraction of Sandstorm til I saw Synthony play it in the Melbourne video. As a bonus, the conductor is really into her role.

Crank up the bass, put it on the big screen and watch the kids dance their faces off.
That's probably similar to when I found Donna Summer's, I Feel Love.
It was a NYE party only a few years ago and there was a local house band playing songs. I realized as the rich bass progressions washed over me - this must be what disco was like. It was a song I had heard forever growing up. I probably first listened to it on the AM radio in one of my stuffed animals. Hearing it live, on a sound system that could give it justice, it was a transformational experience. I got it! I understood disco. I remember sharing my experience with others. "I love disco, and I hear it's making a comeback." I stared intensely at my father as I awaited his reaction. "What are you, high?" My father didn't love disco - I get that now. And what if I was? Does that make the music any less magical? No, they're the ones who are wrong. They just don't get it.
As a former child, I can confirm that Sandstorm bangs. It wasn't 20 years old when I first heard it BUT I also wasn't around when it came out so do with this info what you will.
Have 6 & 3 year old. Can confirm Sandstorm is a favourite.
As a kid I only ever heard it at roller rinks when I was there for birthday parties and school events. It is a great song to rollerblade to, tbf.
I'm pretty sure that even people who hate Darude - Sandstorm love Darude - Sandstorm.
Why not? It’s a masterpiece of synthesizer and effects design, and it’s restrained enough that it never outstays its welcome. The melody (or what counts as one) does more than any other song to reinforce the beat. It’s basically the ideal dance club track.
If there’s one thing that all of your songs have in common is that they were so good that people started to hate them. They became so popular and overplayed that people went sour on them, but to focus on that is to forget that people were absolutely crazy for them to start with.
My kids liked it. Don't know if they'd ask to add it to our repertoire though.
My kids are 3 and 6, and they may not realize it but they love the Chemical Brothers. Our dance party last weekend went in a more Latin direction though: Sol Clap by Quantic
Honestly that entire album is a certified classic and Sandstorm isn’t even the best track on it. I’m partial to Drums of New York but Let the Music Take Control is probably more accessible for non-Darudites.
