I got a job working on a farm (as per my backpacker's visa), and when I was talking to my supervisor one time, I mentioned something about the American Civil War. I assumed he wouldn't know much about American history, since Americans broadly don't know much about Australian history, so I started to explain what the Civil War was, and he cut me off saying, "I know. My dad's a Civil War reenactor in Perth." Blew my mind.
Alas, for the most part, I think Australia mostly imports the bad stuff (the worst junk food, the worst corporate chains, the worst politics, etc.) and misses out on a lot of the good stuff. Dolly is a wonderful exception to that pattern.

Dolly's version is very sad and wistful and subtle. To me, Whitney's version is just yelling and doesn't match the tone required for the meaining of the song.
Dolly was very gracious about Whitney's version. She reportedly loved it and made millions from the cover and royalties from it to invest in the community. This indicates that Dolly Parton was awesome and also possibly that I'm a poor judge of song cover quality.

Personally, "sad and wistful" is the opposite of what I want in music. Music has the power to change moods, and there are enough things in the world to make you feel bad. (I also like big diva vocals, like in disco.) Doesn't mean it's not good, but not what I look for.
