Not currently any handyman type work planned for this weekend though I imagine I'll at least be tidying up whatever remains after the yard sale. Long term plan is to finish the basement into a couple more bedrooms, den, workshop (I dabble in woodworking) and large pantry (wife delivers meals on the side to raise money).

I had never played Codenames until a couple of weeks ago! I really enjoyed my time discovering it, but I think I got lucky to get paired up with someone I had an immediate connection with. By the end of the evening we would be seriously reaching and still getting each other's words. SO satisfying!
Also recently played Unstable Unicorns, which I liked a lot. It's fast, simple, easy to explain. The perfect end-of-evening game IMO. And I'm a sucker for these kinds of card games (I got into MTG and Hearthstone a lot, wrote a Hearthstone simulator which even got me to found my previous company).
Last week I discovered Dice Settlers which I believe just came out. I liked it! But it ended way too abruptly, which seems to be a recurring theme… It also has some balancing issues I'd say.

I really miss having friends living nearby to play board games with. I've considered looking for a meetup, but I'm worried it'll be too much commitment.
Like, I definitely want to be playing board games regularly again, but I don't want to get roped into a group that insists on me being there every single week - sometimes I won't want to go! I'm also worried about having trouble entering a pre-established group and being the (n+1)th wheel of a circle of existing friends.
Any thoughts based on your experience? Also, how does your group decide which games to play on a given week?

My general experience with Meetup.com in now a few cities is that no matter the meetup, people are chill and there's no commitment. At most, some groups do care about you not showing up uninvited (= make sure to sign up for the meetup), and most groups do expect you to show up if you are signed up / tell them if you have to cancel.
Specifically wrt board game nights, I'll say: Just try out a group. If you like it, people are nice etc stick with it. If you don't enjoy your time with people there, don't go back. Don't worry about commitment or whatever.
There's a group in my city that's apparently pretty competitive and has lots of expectations, so I don't attend it. Everywhere else I go to is super chill.
Also, how does your group decide which games to play on a given week?
I am signed up to three different groups: One playing all sorts of indie/kickstarter games 2x a week, one playing very casual games 1x a week, and one playing specifically Uno every sunday. The Uno group is the most "demanding" one (they're strict about signups to control attendance). But none of the groups expect anything from me, and all of them get newcomers every week.
The indie/kickstarter group is decently large (~12-20 attendants / night). The organizer decides on a couple of games in advance people can sign up to. You can also ask/organize for a specific game in advance. And you can also just decide to play something else the night of.
So all in all, just dive in and don't sweat it. If things are too demanding/strict/competitive for you, keep looking, there's always more relaxed places.

I'm gonna have to go to Ankara tomorrow for an exam that I'm going to do on Sunday 10am (a language exam that the government does, because I'm doing it in Italian I have to go to Ankara, which is ~400km from Istanbul, where I live). Initially I was planning to take an early morning flight to the city and back, but then everybody told me that I'd be too sleepy and fail the exam. Well, I know that I wouldn't, even tho I'd have to leave home by 3am; I've done one such exam before and passed it with an A; but I listened to them for some reason and booked an AirBnB. Now I gonna take the train (midday flights are expensive) there and back, which will take around 4 hours. I like the train ride and I can finish my book that I need to deal with this weekend during the trip. I'll also attend an event at the uni I'm preparing for and possibly get to chat to the department I'm aiming to do my master's at, ask a few questions. Apart from that and the train rides, I'm going to be wandering around in Ankara, a little city that's surprisingly the capital of Turkey. Last time I went there, IDK, I didn't like it. But this time round I'll have some time for a dinner and a beer, so maybe it'll be fun. Gonna be -3 degrees celcius in the night tho, which does not sound fun to me.
Last time I was there I asked a random bloke on the street where the metro was. He responded: "Below." Yeah, I was definitely asking where the tunnels were, totally not where the station was...

The date went well, but fuck it had such an awkward ending. As she was about to get in her car she was thinking of giving a hug but hesitated, so I was confused what she was tryna do. I just gave a thumbs up and walked away, super embarrassed. I don't know if I wanna see her again though, not because of the awkward thing lol. But I don't think I find her that attractive. Let's see.
If you don't even find her attractive, don't bother. Also, awkward moments are bound to happen. Movies make it seem like everything has to be smooth or else there is no connection and no future....

Also, awkward moments are bound to happen. Movies make it seem like everything has to be smooth or else there is no connection and no future. In reality, in takes time to be comfortable with someone.
Yeah for sure. It was just something different for me. Usually when I would go on dates in highschool, I would already know the person really well and most of the awkward moments would be done....

I have a ticket to the Monterey Jazz Festival in Philadelphia for tomorrow! I've listened to jazz casually for a long time, but I think this is the first time since I was a child that I'll have attended a live jazz concert. It's a fascinating genre, and I'm excited to get a feel for the energy that accompanies such a thing.

Not much, just some digital cleanup. I'm digging through my home folder, looking for files that I want to keep and for a place where to keep them, all in preparation for a back-up (and mirroring setup, as most of these files should also be available on my netbook) so I'll be able to replace my current Suse system with Debian.
It is taking much longer than it should and I'm pretty upset with the lack of organization of past me.

Be careful with Syncthing! I had a big disaster because of it and lost lots of data and time. It was part my foolishness, but Syncthing does not default to protecting your data in case of a configuration fuckup. In my case, it could've easily spotted the mistake, but it wiped my data instead, ignoring also the read only setting. I was lucky to at least have a stale backup; I lost a couple months of important data, but luckily it was not much. It took me a few weeks to redigitise my notes, and I'm sure there are things I lost forever which I did not notice.
I still use it, but it is confined to a single directory which I only use to sync certain files to my phone.
How come? Shouldn't there be .stversions? By default, I think syncthing has file versioning, so you should still have access to your files, right? I use syncthing and I love it. I've had a few...

I use syncthing and I love it. I've had a few issues, but it's great and it's better than the alternatives, as far as I know. Also, syncthing is a syncing tool. You should have a separate backup system (http://borgbase.com/ maybe?).
EDIT: Which reminds me, I might just create a script this weekend to backup (using borg) my files to my pen, whenever I plug it in.

I have two devices that I call alpha (my laptop) and beta (my phone). I had set the setting on alpha which says "preserve files on this computer regardless of the changes on other devices". Because of that setting I thought I was safe and did not enable versioning to save on resources. AFAIK the versioning is opt-in. In essence my config was like rsync where "just copy files from alpha to beta when something changes, but not the inverse". Turns out I was too naïve. It bit me and ignored that flag when I messed up my directory structure on my phone because I needed some space (the damn thing did not stop bothering me b/c it memory was full, and I was too busy to do it properly). I don't think my failure excuses the horrible failure mode of Syncthing tho, and I don't trust it with my non-ephemeral data anymore.
Now I'm doing weekly full backups (gzipped tarballs). I feel like my HDD is failing tho, I have some bad sectors. Gonna get and install an SSD next week... I want to do online backups (someone (I guess) here told me that I could use tarsnap for cheap to store the lastest backup encrypted off-site, maybe I try that.
ya, I don't think tarsnap is cheap though. Checkout borgbase.com. Mail them, maybe they've a cheaper package for backups that don't take 100gb. Check out also https://www.rsync.net/. I remember...

Thanks, I'll add it to my list of options. It's so damn hard to figure out the pricing with these things tho... Maybe I end up connecting an external SDD to my RPi and sync there, given all I need is maybe 64Gb of space at most (all my data is ~15Gb at most, and it is all my data since time immemorial), and I don't want to be paying for this anyways.

Hey there - I hope your weekend went well. I've been trying to to stick to learning Python off and on for a while now too. Maybe we can hold each other accountable. Do you want to think of / pick a small project to try to do in Python together? We could collaborate via GitHub and we don't have to rush to finish it at all. I'm a pretty slow learner and I don't put that much time into coding outside of work (which is a shame and I'd like to change actually) so maybe we can just casually work on something. Any interest? A project is usually a better way to learn (for me at least).

My husband is out of town for the weekend, and I usually like to use those weekends for the kind of home project that disrupts the flow of our house, like painting a room or something. But, we are having the basement bathroom redone by professionals and our whole basement is kind of inaccessible for the time being, so I'm not sure I want to screw up more of the house! I have a pile of mending that is like.. Difficult mending (holes in middles of fabrics, worn out cuffs on stretch jersey, etc) that maybe I'll devote some time to figuring out!

Most of my recommendations are probably food-related. The House (which is just outside of Chinatown) was me and my wife's favorite restaurant that we found there and would make sure to go there every time. Everything there is really good, but the pork chop, sea bass, and wasabi noodles are probably what we ordered most often.

But our team has climbed the ranks over the last couple years with a new coach, and is now at the top of the best league. So there is a chance. Safe to say, if we win today, it's going to go fucking bonkers!

Movies make it seem like everything has to be smooth or else there is no connection and no future. In reality, in takes time to be comfortable with someone.
Yeah for sure. It was just something different for me. Usually when I would go on dates in highschool, I would already know the person really well and most of the awkward moments would be done. This was something new, and I am so happy I went. I really want to be more and more confident with myself.
I remember they were pretty cheap also.
I use syncthing on my raspberry PI. You could try syncthing again :D
I hear you! I get a good amount of down time in my job and occasionally go on a learning code binge but it hasn't stuck yet.
I don't know what your current position is in life but I work a 9-5 tech job that I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. I'll be here when you come back, hit me up if you're interested. Enjoy your holiday away from a computer my man.
Bought a ton of shop equipment(by mass); old arc welder, shop cart, necessary safety gear, some rods and will probably spend a day or so figuring out in what state the welder and cart are and if they still work properly(and if not, fix).
Tomorrow I am going to clean my entire apartment and then meet a friend to maybe (or maybe not) jump into a very cold lake, but at least do some exercise near a lake...On Sunday I plan to start packing a bit as I'm getting ready for a move the week after next and also just try to take it easy and relax at home.
Have you read Marie Kondo's book?
I have not, but it is on the list! I did see her folding method and use it for my clothes and got the general gist of her approach to tidying in general by watching an episode of her show, but all very surface-level.
Watch Dota tournament mainly (DreamLeague).
Who's your favorites?
Favorite teams ? I usually cheer for underdogs, but I like OG and TL.
Is it because of Miracle- and N0Tail, or do you like the teams in general?
I like the teams that have players I like. When Dendi was in Na'Vi, Na'Vi was my team. Now that he's not, Na'Vi isn't a team anymore.
It's more the personalities yes, Kuro, Ceb, etc. I don't care too much about brands, although liquid is nice I guess.
Since I finished listening to "The Dream," an absolutely fascinating podcast about Multilevel Marketing, I'm going to be trying to find more MLM stuff to binge. I've already watched "Betting on Zero" on Netflix. I'm giving the podcast "Sounds Like MLM but OK" a shot, but not quite sold yet.
I cannot believe the crime and even politics surrounding MLMs (network marketing, pyramid schemes, whatever). This podcast was truly eye-opening!
participating in the ForgeLan LAN Party near Akron, OH.
Going to buy some expensive tea in San Francisco's Chinatown. Tomorrow I've been invited to a large Dimsum dinner (20-ish people invited).
Vital Leaf Tea is a nice shop, if you haven't gone yet (and aren't going somewhere in particular). I bought some nice older pu'er there a couple of times, and I really liked their snow chrysanthemum as a caffeine-free tea.
I went to Red Blossom. I got
But I'll make sure to try out your recommendation some time.
Do you have any other Bay Area tips? I just moved here last September.
Probably not much. I was only ever down there for about 1-4 weeks at a time, and probably spent about 4 months total there, so you've already been there longer than me overall.
Most of my recommendations are probably food-related. The House (which is just outside of Chinatown) was me and my wife's favorite restaurant that we found there and would make sure to go there every time. Everything there is really good, but the pork chop, sea bass, and wasabi noodles are probably what we ordered most often.
Thanks, I'll make sure to check that place out as well!
I’m going to learn about the enterprise SIEM space. I don’t have an infosec background, so it feels pretty overwhelming at the moment.
Edit: also riding the bike, and a nephew sleepover. I bought him this LEGO robot kit, should be fun.
I'm attending an annual football match at our local ground. It's a game our local team hasn't won since 1920! Lol. But our team has climbed the ranks over the last couple years with a new coach, and is now at the top of the best league. So there is a chance. Safe to say, if we win today, it's going to go fucking bonkers!
I'm mostly working. But I got the night watch so I'll do some free code camp and try and get a 3d printer working.
As a reward for a week working abroad, I get to come back home and go to my MBA courses on Friday evening and all Saturday....
no rest for the wicked.
