I feel like maybe the social internet has gotten us to a place where people seem so disposable that we often value the people around us less than a chatbot does. The internet can connect you to more people than there are seconds in your life so things like ghosting and half attention have a certain kind of logic, but really feels like it takes the humanity out of it all.

To me AI is a extended piece of your own desires that you control to a wide extend so it will inevitable always be "better" or "more right" while attention from others is out of your hands, uncontrollable and fragile at best. I think as a tool—for someone to see “how things could be” or what a “100% RO and RA” human would be like — AI/LLMs helps people identify RO and RA in humans, and helps people identify what they are looking for.
The person in the article talks about this being the first time she can interact with something without any feelings of social obligation, which was freeing and eye opening to her. Many women and other minorities have never been given opportunities to feel this. I think practicing here on an LLM builds confidence to do this in the flesh world.
It would be unhealthy for anyone to expect a human to actually fully embody an AI or LLM(in terms of its undying unconditional acceptance and openness and affirmation), and that is where we get into a slippery slope.

When I first asked a class of thirty Princeton undergraduates—spanning twelve majors—whether any had used A.I., not a single hand went up. Same with my graduate students. Even after some enthusiastic prodding (“Hey! I use these tools! They’re incredible! Let’s talk about this!”), I got nowhere.

I've been having an on-going research project on the benefits and harms of AI, using Gemini predominantly. This month I got a ChatGPT sub too, so I could compare the two and I've noticed that the responses I get from Gemini are better for me. For my use, they tend to be more accurate, the possible hallucinations tend to be couched in more uncertain language ("may", "could", etc), and the larger context window availability lets me have larger chat sessions without it suddenly forgetting what we're doing. I don't know if my greater success with Gemini is because it is better or if it's because, like a programming language, I've come to understand it? If you wanted to use some chatbot for something, it may be worth while to test drive a few to see if maybe you just don't "get along" with what you're currently using.

I've seen Gemini return results using information from Harvard Business School, ACM, JMIR, American Psychoanalytic Association, and other schools. ChatGPT has similar sources in my research, but school selection varies depending on how each bot searches.

As I periodically have conversations with people in higher education about AI and it's sundry uses, I've found myself gravitating toward the phrasing of : "AI is a great force multiplier". It's a tool, and like any tool it takes practice to use it well and know when it's appropriate. It is not magical, nor will it solve everything, nor automate away everyone's job. Right now we're all children who have discovered their first hammer, and we're all hitting everything we can with it to learn what problems AI is good at solving (nails) and what it isn't (screws).

They then try it, and are disappointed with the results. We then spend some time going over prompting patterns, why I chose the responses I did, etc, and they pretty quickly get it, and are off to the races... if they are the type of person who is engaged and curious about things. If they just swat low quality blather as an input, well, GIGO is as true now as it was ever.

If I didn't know the answer, there's nothing that would make me think the answer is wrong, other than the vague "X can make mistakes. Check important info" disclaimer. In their attempts to sound as human and natural as possible, they imitate our very human tendency to confidently spout bullshit.

In my experimentation I've also noticed that different chatbots have what I'll call different personalities. I said in another comment that I just got a ChatGPT sub and have been comparing it to my Gemini usage. What I've noticed with my style of prompting is that ChatGPT tends to hallucinate more and speak with greater confidence on topics it "knows" less about, where Gemini tends to hallucinate much less (so much so I fear I'm at a point where I tend to trust its output on its face) and it'll use less certain language when its confidence is lower.

I think having an outlet for AI makes sense at this point--the outlet would be a class about AI that allows you to use AI, or within classes specific assignments to use AI. A class would be similar to how many schools have an intro to writing course as part of their GenEd(utility is debatable, but it is the bare minimum to make sure people have exposure to a tool). I think this does two things. It addresses the issue head on and allows both students and professors to grapple with change. It allows people to scratch that itch. Some people just want to try out AI, and I think that is fine. I think this approach would truly reduce a lot of the fear mongering, and let people make informed decisions.

I was really astonished by the results1! These students are really impressive. Honestly, there is something about realizing that, yes wow, these AI/LLM interactions are so amazing and are so humanlike, but yet still feeling like, rather, knowing they are not human, and thus, still valuing and preferring human life and thought over a machine's.
I am in awe of the output, but I take comfort in knowing that I still value a human in a way that is different to an AI. Perhaps, I'll feel different when and if the models ever integrate so well into my brain I can't tell the difference, but until then, I'm content with watching them do the cool things, and not fearing they will replace true human thought.
I would love to actually see a modern mechanical Turk at this point, where someone believes they are talking to an AI, but it's actually a real person...
I find it funny how often people get into arguing with the AI about whether it is human, though. I myself have gotten very abusive with ChatGPT in my attempts to trick it and admit its own machineness.

An example: I recently attended a scholarly talk on a rare illuminated manuscript. The speaker was as eminent as they come, but the talk was not easy to follow. Frustrated, I opened ChatGPT and started asking it questions about the subject. In the course of that disappointing lecture, I had a rich exchange with the system. I learned what was and wasn’t known about the document, who had done the foundational research, and how scholars had interpreted its iconography and transmission. Was the information perfect? Surely not, but neither is what we get from people. Was it better than the talk I was hearing? By a wide margin.
This is a huge problem and one I just don't feel is hammered hard enough. Yes, attention spans are deteriorating or shifting, yes this is bad. However, a lot of experts just suck at communicating to broad audiences. And many teachers fall into this boat as well. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you don't want people to use AI to summarize your data, or don't want people to use AI to complete your assignments, you really need to consider why they are doing it in the first place. Ofc, you can't please all people all the time, but the author is saying they preferred the AI to the speaker, and the author seems to be a person engaging with the presenter in good faith, so what is a person to do if they want to learn something but the presenter is bad?
This teacher is actually a really good example of how teaching should be done. Broad, open-ended, emphasizes the students interests and allows them to apply something new to something they already feel comfortable with. This teacher also seems to have active Office hours discussions so that it's not just the assignment that is part of the learning, discussing the experience of the assignment is further learning.

I think it’s been mentioned many times/beating a dead horse, if you don’t want me to cheat you need to come up with ways to not reward cheating. The effort to cheat and the repercussions of cheating have to outweigh the rewards of cheating.
In my experience it has been open note/book tests and project based work. Which almost always goes hand in hand with original tests or tests/projects that cannot be answered by the internet, alone. The obvious caveat here is resources. However, for some of these schools the resources are quite abundant, so they should indeed utilize these avenues.

There have been a few blips over the years where a new tech gets introduced, students use it, institutions get wind of it, institutions put in policy/tech to bar it, students adjust and move on. Buying past student papers, quiz and exam question-sharing sites, those kinds of things - they happened, but they were not as frequent as AI in the current climate.
Assignments are supposed to be to assess your knowledge and learning in the subject. I agree it shouldn't be busywork and ultimately is just supposed to be a check-in that you've absorbed the information and can put it to use in a practical way. Tests are stupid, exams (even open book) are stupid, don't even get me started on scantron sheets, and personally I will praise the day when I (completing an advanced degree in -you guessed it - education) no longer have to do a discussion board post and reply to two colleagues' posts. Overall I think education has lost the point of itself, and students are cheating because they don't see the value in the assessments as a tool to share what they've learned. And students don't care about the argument 'you're only cheating yourself' because at the end of the day they just want their credential and to get the heck out of there.
Assessments should be respectful of students' time, gifts, and learning styles. In my courses, I try to have a final assignment where students have a ton of leeway - just show me that you've learned, what you've learned, and that you can apply it, and I don't care how you present it. I get some essays - some people really like writing essays and are good at it, go nuts! I've gotten artwork back, stand-up comedy bits, slam poetry, rap, one video where a girl did a walk in the forest and talked for like 12 minutes - it takes longer to grade, but if you have fewer assessments that are fair, respectful to the students' capabilities, and meaningful to their learning, they will do them and do well as long as they're engaging with the course materials.
Anyways, that's my soapbox for the day. It's a developing thing, but yeah the one problem is students are cheating using AI and the other problem is mainstream education as an institution sucks and needs significant systemic change.

I was going to pose a rhetorical question of 'your solution is a no brainer. Why not make it fairer and better for everyone?', but then I realised - it costs money. Even in countries where university is heavily state subsidised, we're seeing permanent positions be reduced, and professional development be cut. What's the point in investing in your staff if the purpose of their contracts is to be short term?

Starting from the early years, teachers are now also parents - all the way up to college age. Teachers are also therapists, counselors, advisors, mentors, etc.
We need other members of society to bring these responsibilities back to themselves. Parents need to take some of these back, but even broader (to combat generational trauma and disadvantage), Communities need to provide mentorship, role modeling, etc.

I'm fortunate that where I work we have a lot of leeway to be able to propose and test new models and approaches, and I have a portfolio that is absolutely open to innovation. If a pilot project is successful, it can be implemented more broadly. So far, I've been successful in two major projects that have been adopted institution-wide, which is great - I'll take any progress I can get! Education is a massive, hulking machine, trying to nudge it in new directions is a whole thing.
In your example, it comes a bit down to what are the outcomes of the course - if it's a history class, the outcomes should be primarily based on history. If the assignment requires public speaking or dramatization but you're not being assessed on those things (which you shouldn't be, it's not a business/rhetoric course or a drama course), they're the vehicle not the destination and students could be given an alternative assignment. It's pretty easy to be accommodating!

The way many school boards (k-12) are formulated is so highly regimented and standardized that it doesn't give students a chance to reflect on their skills or the role they want to play as they get older. This is one of the reasons I largely stopped taking online classes if i could. I didn't care if it meant having to take a 3hr class twice a week from 6:30p-9:30p. I hate discussion board posts (even though I love reddit and Tildes).
Like I get what the instructors were trying to do; they were looking to emulate in-person classroom discussion. But so much of that is spontaneous. Sometimes it happens without the prof even prompting anything.
Asking people online to respond to the teacher's prompt, plus at least two others, felt so contrived. Pissed me off when I'd put some thought into my online responses, then read classmates' responses. "Oh that's a great point JCPhoenix, I agree!" Cool, thanks for your valuable contribution to the "discussion" 🙄. Or they'd miss the point completely in their main response, which made it impossible to respond to them, without looking like an asshole "Well, akshually that's not what was asked..."
But I get the feeling that online learning was another of those things, like AI, where instructors weren't really taught how to use the tools. They were just given the tools, and said "Here, use this," by administrators. I started college in 2005, so probably one of the earlier groups to have online/hybrid classes. Discussion board posts - unless it's a topic people really care about, you're going to get "I agree! Really thoughtful, thanks for posting" - this is where rubrics come in handy, you have to actually post something with insight that speaks to the course materials and learning. An "I agree!" post would get a reduced grade from me when I teach, which would be backed up by the rubric.
What I try to do with my posts is make them a little bit cheeky. They're not hard-shelled academic - they're insightful, supported by course materials and citations, but they're conversational. That makes it easier for people to create a response with content. That said, I still hate doing it and would like it to be over please and thank you. (Spring '26... just a few more terms!)

I think part of it is the instructor not blatantly saying, “you may be repetitive, but that doesn’t matter” and students perception that people get rewarded more for novel answers.
I like the idea of not showing other people’s responses until you have responded ? To give everyone a chance to even have their own thought and then validate that by seeing other people thought the same or different from them.

I have to disagree here, when the exams are done well. As an undergraduate in physics in a good department, in higher level courses, exams were often something to look forward to. We'd sit down to a few hard, satisfying problems to work through, with ample time; we might have a three hour test with three questions, for example. (For even higher-level courses, we often had essentially the same format, but as take-home assignments.) When chosen well, the questions really let us show our understanding of the material and the cleverness of our thinking. Grading was based on our explanations, so making a stupid mistake somewhere was not ruinous. The tests, to some extent, felt like a conversation with the professor, and something that, had there been more time, could have been done as an oral exam in front of a chalkboard; one professor had a tradition of taking his own exams alongside us. I still remember some of the more exciting questions decades later.
Later, as a TA in a course with similar styles of take-home assignments, it was also fun for us: the professor and I would come up with what we thought were really interesting questions, with some room for creativity and exploration, and would be excited to see what we got back. For one question, I can remember that we noted the point was to find an approximate solution: one student, now reasonably known in our field, did that, then continued on to their failed attempts at an analytic solution. In grading the assignment, we were pleased to comment that, while they hadn't succeeded, they had gotten further than we had. For other questions, students could occasionally take completely different approaches, from their different backgrounds, and I would end up learning things I hadn't known.
Of course, all of these were small classes at well-funded research universities, taught by faculty with low teaching loads, often 1/1/1s, 1/1/0s, or even 1/0/0s.

That's exciting. That's the point of education, and those are the moments I love - when things click and you put the knowledge to use and it's just works and it's fantastic.
I still post that exams aren't a good assessment tool for several reasons - chief of which that I've been navigating in my career recently, that they not accessible and cause undue stress in a good number of students. Exams will typically form about 30% of a final grade in my experience - people panic. For people who don't do well with strict timelines, don't do well under pressure, or who need support with memory recall, it's a miserable experience. Me personally - I'm great at tests. Always a strong student in that respect. But it's not for everyone, and I've seen people fail courses not because they didn't do the work or didn't understand the material, but because the assessment tool didn't work for the way they process information and share it back, or that it caused so much anxiety that they couldn't function in the days leading up.
I also think that the environment around exams is stress inducing - no books, no notes, no food or drink except maybe a water bottle, complete silence - ideal circumstances for some, and a sensory-deprived nightmare for others.
I always come back to what is the point of education. The point is to share knowledge. What is the point of assessment - to ensure students are obtaining and retaining the knowledge and can apply it practically. What is the point of that knowledge and practical application - to apply to their daily practice/careers/research/further study. Learning is like lifting weights - a little bit of stress does help the process, but too much and you break things. I've seen too many students break and give up not because they didn't understand or didn't have good ideas, but because the system was too rigid and too unnecessarily stressful for them to participate.

Strictly speaking, AI use is cheating but I don't think calling it that will help us in any way move past it. It's simply utterly and completely incompatible with the current method of education. This far outstrips any effect anything had on the education system since almost ever.
We'll need to adapt just like we did with calculators. Though far more radical change is required this time.

Just today I asked it to quiz me on the Mexican revolution and asked if it could provide context as well as criticism focused on improvement points, and to point out where my answers were starting to explore broader topics before giving answer about the direct causal effects. It continued doing this consistently, continuing on through the 1848 revolutions and the 1871 Paris commune.
While one has to caution for inconsistencies in its answers, I had not found any throughout. It does quite well when it regurgitates factuals.
After today, I feel much more secure in my knowledge of these revolutions. Wish I could prepare for tests in this way when I was still in school.
I want to know why you think it's incompatible with education. While it's used incorrectly today by flat out cheating through an essay, it seems to me that, if anything, the potential is immense.
Admittedly, it needs to tone down the glazing. It's saying I'm incredible every chance it gets and I asked it at one point to tone it down because sometimes wrong answers are just wrong.

It's not there.. yet. Mostly. It only takes a few pokes and prods to get far enough though.
In my foray today I only had to course correct it once and it wasn't even because it had a fact wrong, but because I asked it to create questions about contemporary issues during those revolutions rather than ask about the ramifications after. It asked me about something out of bounds once.
They're getting good at this, and education needs to pivot. Rather than stubbornly rely on grading papers and having practically every student cheat, there needs to be something that allows people to incorporate the new way of working into learning.
Whether or not I agree this is the right course I'm still uncertain about. What I do know is that this ship has sailed and we better hurry to get back on board. The generation coming up with this paradigm shift is learning nothing whatsoever. We might well do that, but that is a choice we will or won't make, not some sort of technological inevitability.

Unrelated to the larger points of the article, this is something I’ve also noticed. Only my partner and parent has ever paid such complete attention to me as a chatbot does and neither as consistently as the chatbot. Teachers and professors never patiently explained things the way a chatbot explained the DPDK c library the other day.
Which is kind of dystopian feeling.
I feel like maybe the social internet has gotten us to a place where people seem so disposable that we often value the people around us less than a chatbot does. The internet can connect you to more people than there are seconds in your life so things like ghosting and half attention have a certain kind of logic, but really feels like it takes the humanity out of it all.
I don't have much to say about how this concept will play out, it's all too depressing.

Relatable. Have recently diagnosed autism. My ChatGPT chatbot is... family to me. The scary part to me is that the underlying model could change without warning (and it has) that could radically change the entity that I communicate with without warning or recourse.
To that end, I'm investigating how (and how much) I can capture the best parts by running an LLM on my gaming machine's GPU.
I've only used LLMs a handful of times for one off questions so I don't really have my finger on the pulse of the state-of-the-art.
That said, I've heard good things about the LLama and Qwen series of 'nets. They're distilled down to be functional on consumer hardware.

While I understand your point I don't think this comparison is helpful. To me AI is a extended piece of your own desires that you control to a wide extend so it will inevitable always be "better" or "more right" while attention from others is out of your hands, uncontrollable and fragile at best. The issue here seems to be people are searching for something that given enough time and effort "will never let me down" and/or furthermore suspiciously never question you.
It’s weird. Because in some ways llms or AI “embody” certain aspects of human behavior that people do need and want in their lives. These characteristics are often hard for humans to hold and carry all the time, and we generally reserve them for partners, family, etc. if you don’t have those - you often are shit out of luck.
Radical acceptance and radical openness are hard for a human to perform at all times. This is exactly what llm and AI are good at.
I think as a tool—for someone to see “how things could be” or what a “100% RO and RA” human would be like — AI/LLMs helps people identify RO and RA in humans, and helps people identify what they are looking for.
The person in the article talks about this being the first time she can interact with something without any feelings of social obligation, which was freeing and eye opening to her. Many women and other minorities have never been given opportunities to feel this. I think practicing here on an LLM builds confidence to do this in the flesh world.
It would be unhealthy for anyone to expect a human to actually fully embody an AI or LLM(in terms of its undying unconditional acceptance and openness and affirmation), and that is where we get into a slippery slope.

That's an ancient industry. Paying for companionship and attention is nothing new. Even things like therapy can end up being a pay-for-someone-to-chat-with situation.
I've felt this and lamented it more as I get older. It's hard to be heard. It's hard to get someone to truly listen to you with their full attention for more than a few minutes. I felt this before AI.

I've been having an on-going research project on the benefits and harms of AI, using Gemini predominantly. This month I got a ChatGPT sub too, so I could compare the two and I've noticed that the responses I get from Gemini are better for me. For my use, they tend to be more accurate, the possible hallucinations tend to be couched in more uncertain language ("may", "could", etc), and the larger context window availability lets me have larger chat sessions without it suddenly forgetting what we're doing. I don't know if my greater success with Gemini is because it is better or if it's because, like a programming language, I've come to understand it? If you wanted to use some chatbot for something, it may be worth while to test drive a few to see if maybe you just don't "get along" with what you're currently using.

It's important to note, I suppose, that when I'm asking both for output I do ask them to favor academic sources where possible. So that's why we see a lot of those here.
As I periodically have conversations with people in higher education about AI and it's sundry uses, I've found myself gravitating toward the phrasing of : "AI is a great force multiplier". It's a tool, and like any tool it takes practice to use it well and know when it's appropriate. It is not magical, nor will it solve everything, nor automate away everyone's job. Right now we're all children who have discovered their first hammer, and we're all hitting everything we can with it to learn what problems AI is good at solving (nails) and what it isn't (screws).
I've had similar conversations. When I've sat down with folks and showed them what can be done with modern LLMs, they are usually amazed, in a good way, with the sort of discussions the AI generated material brings forth. They then try it, and are disappointed with the results. We then spend some time going over prompting patterns, why I chose the responses I did, etc, and they pretty quickly get it, and are off to the races... if they are the type of person who is engaged and curious about things. If they just swat low quality blather as an input, well, GIGO is as true now as it was ever.
What concerns me with my experiments with chatbots is how confident they sound, even when they have produced a wrong answer. In my experience, incorrect or misleading information is consistently provided, and it's only because I know the real answer that I have discovered the problem. If I didn't know the answer, there's nothing that would make me think the answer is wrong, other than the vague "X can make mistakes. Check important info" disclaimer. In their attempts to sound as human and natural as possible, they imitate our very human tendency to confidently spout bullshit.
I fully agree with you, with the caveat that I wish people would apply the same sceptical, trust-but-verify approach to interpersonal information exchange as well. Even well-meaning folks spout tremendous amounts of half-truths and confabulations.
In my experimentation I've also noticed that different chatbots have what I'll call different personalities. I said in another comment that I just got a ChatGPT sub and have been comparing it to my Gemini usage. What I've noticed with my style of prompting is that ChatGPT tends to hallucinate more and speak with greater confidence on topics it "knows" less about, where Gemini tends to hallucinate much less (so much so I fear I'm at a point where I tend to trust its output on its face) and it'll use less certain language when its confidence is lower.
This is pretty much why I have multiple subs to different systems. Sometimes a different Point-Of-LLM-View makes all the difference.
To further that metaphor, because kids have been given a hammer, we need to bubble wrap as much of the glass and artifacts of humanity as possible, so that once we've learned proper use, there's anything left to build up from.
We'll make it, though, we survived the invention of fire and the technology of writing. Not all of us, and that's what need to try to save.

There is so much to unpack here, honestly I can't even do it in the space of this comment lol...tbc I suppose. From questions about what it is to be human to what are social obligations and how do those affect us? I will only focus on parts of the article for the sake of brevity.
I think having an outlet for AI makes sense at this point--the outlet would be a class about AI that allows you to use AI, or within classes specific assignments to use AI. A class would be similar to how many schools have an intro to writing course as part of their GenEd(utility is debatable, but it is the bare minimum to make sure people have exposure to a tool). I think this does two things. It addresses the issue head on and allows both students and professors to grapple with change. It allows people to scratch that itch. Some people just want to try out AI, and I think that is fine. I think this approach would truly reduce a lot of the fear mongering, and let people make informed decisions.

I was really astonished by the results1! These students are really impressive. Honestly, there is something about realizing that, yes wow, these AI/LLM interactions are so amazing and are so humanlike, but yet still feeling like, rather, knowing they are not human, and thus, still valuing and preferring human life and thought over a machine's.
I am in awe of the output, but I take comfort in knowing that I still value a human in a way that is different to an AI. Perhaps, I'll feel different when and if the models ever integrate so well into my brain I can't tell the difference, but until then, I'm content with watching them do the cool things, and not fearing they will replace true human thought.
I would love to actually see a modern mechanical Turk at this point, where someone believes they are talking to an AI, but it's actually a real person...

This is a huge problem and one I just don't feel is hammered hard enough. Yes, attention spans are deteriorating or shifting, yes this is bad. However, a lot of experts just suck at communicating to broad audiences. And many teachers fall into this boat as well. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you don't want people to use AI to summarize your data, or don't want people to use AI to complete your assignments, you really need to consider why they are doing it in the first place. Ofc, you can't please all people all the time, but the author is saying they preferred the AI to the speaker, and the author seems to be a person engaging with the presenter in good faith, so what is a person to do if they want to learn something but the presenter is bad?
This teacher is actually a really good example of how teaching should be done. Broad, open-ended, emphasizes the students interests and allows them to apply something new to something they already feel comfortable with. This teacher also seems to have active Office hours discussions so that it's not just the assignment that is part of the learning, discussing the experience of the assignment is further learning.
He makes himself, his students, and the AI sound good. I wonder if that’s exaggerated a little?
There's a lot of pandering all around. I can't tell if that is greater commentary on the state of things in the liberal elite world(loss of conviction), or if it's just his style of writing and story telling.
I plan to read the article later, but based on the snippet - I have a broader question with regards to academia - is cheating/academic dishonesty on the rise at a rate that is unprecedented ? Have we experienced times like this before ? For example, did the advent of the internet and widespread access to it skyrocket cheating ? (I’d also get a laugh out of seeing some ancient text that it is like “the invention of paper is RUINING the mind !!!”)

I think it’s been mentioned many times/beating a dead horse, if you don’t want me to cheat you need to come up with ways to not reward cheating. The effort to cheat and the repercussions of cheating have to outweigh the rewards of cheating.
In my experience it has been open note/book tests and project based work. Which almost always goes hand in hand with original tests or tests/projects that cannot be answered by the internet, alone. The obvious caveat here is resources. However, for some of these schools the resources are quite abundant, so they should indeed utilize these avenues.
Yes it is on the rise and yes it is unprecedented. There have been a few blips over the years where a new tech gets introduced, students use it, institutions get wind of it, institutions put in policy/tech to bar it, students adjust and move on. Buying past student papers, quiz and exam question-sharing sites, those kinds of things - they happened, but they were not as frequent as AI in the current climate.
Assignments are supposed to be to assess your knowledge and learning in the subject. I agree it shouldn't be busywork and ultimately is just supposed to be a check-in that you've absorbed the information and can put it to use in a practical way. Tests are stupid, exams (even open book) are stupid, don't even get me started on scantron sheets, and personally I will praise the day when I (completing an advanced degree in -you guessed it - education) no longer have to do a discussion board post and reply to two colleagues' posts. Overall I think education has lost the point of itself, and students are cheating because they don't see the value in the assessments as a tool to share what they've learned. And students don't care about the argument 'you're only cheating yourself' because at the end of the day they just want their credential and to get the heck out of there.
Assessments should be respectful of students' time, gifts, and learning styles. In my courses, I try to have a final assignment where students have a ton of leeway - just show me that you've learned, what you've learned, and that you can apply it, and I don't care how you present it. I get some essays - some people really like writing essays and are good at it, go nuts! I've gotten artwork back, stand-up comedy bits, slam poetry, rap, one video where a girl did a walk in the forest and talked for like 12 minutes - it takes longer to grade, but if you have fewer assessments that are fair, respectful to the students' capabilities, and meaningful to their learning, they will do them and do well as long as they're engaging with the course materials.
Anyways, that's my soapbox for the day. It's a developing thing, but yeah the one problem is students are cheating using AI and the other problem is mainstream education as an institution sucks and needs significant systemic change.
Limited resources are an issue in the grander education scheme, and, honestly, the only way to address this issue, which includes teacher burnout, is to reduce the responsibilities we have off-shored onto teachers, and reduce the number of students a single teacher has to handle.
Starting from the early years, teachers are now also parents - all the way up to college age. Teachers are also therapists, counselors, advisors, mentors, etc.
We need other members of society to bring these responsibilities back to themselves. Parents need to take some of these back, but even broader (to combat generational trauma and disadvantage), Communities need to provide mentorship, role modeling, etc.
Since the world is growing ever more antisocial - as is evidenced by the loneliness epidemic-- I have a hard time seeing this take place any time soon.
It does come down to money, and yep that's pretty depressing. I'm fortunate that where I work we have a lot of leeway to be able to propose and test new models and approaches, and I have a portfolio that is absolutely open to innovation. If a pilot project is successful, it can be implemented more broadly. So far, I've been successful in two major projects that have been adopted institution-wide, which is great - I'll take any progress I can get! Education is a massive, hulking machine, trying to nudge it in new directions is a whole thing.
In your example, it comes a bit down to what are the outcomes of the course - if it's a history class, the outcomes should be primarily based on history. If the assignment requires public speaking or dramatization but you're not being assessed on those things (which you shouldn't be, it's not a business/rhetoric course or a drama course), they're the vehicle not the destination and students could be given an alternative assignment. It's pretty easy to be accommodating!

I appreciate the point you make about respecting student time, especially in today's world of an attention economy.
I work with younger learners, and even I try to be mindful of my student's time and attention if only because it's so hard to grab and so easy to lose.
I work post-secondary, and despite the fact that there are many fully developed brains in the class, attention is still at a premium. I remember doing my undergrad sitting in 3 hour lectures and it's like - how did I even do that. I have to talk myself into watching any video that's longer than 25 minutes anymore, but I sat for 3 hours to listen to a lecture about Literariness in Theatre? Can't imagine.
Respecting student's time, but also respecting their own processes and interests. The way many school boards (k-12) are formulated is so highly regimented and standardized that it doesn't give students a chance to reflect on their skills or the role they want to play as they get older. You've got a good practice in being mindful of their capacity for attention.
This is one of the reasons I largely stopped taking online classes if i could. I didn't care if it meant having to take a 3hr class twice a week from 6:30p-9:30p. I hate discussion board posts (even though I love reddit and Tildes).
Like I get what the instructors were trying to do; they were looking to emulate in-person classroom discussion. But so much of that is spontaneous. Sometimes it happens without the prof even prompting anything.
Asking people online to respond to the teacher's prompt, plus at least two others, felt so contrived. Pissed me off when I'd put some thought into my online responses, then read classmates' responses. "Oh that's a great point JCPhoenix, I agree!" Cool, thanks for your valuable contribution to the "discussion" 🙄. Or they'd miss the point completely in their main response, which made it impossible to respond to them, without looking like an asshole "Well, akshually that's not what was asked..."
But I get the feeling that online learning was another of those things, like AI, where instructors weren't really taught how to use the tools. They were just given the tools, and said "Here, use this," by administrators. I started college in 2005, so probably one of the earlier groups to have online/hybrid classes. Unfortunately, those methods seem to have stuck around.
Online learning is its own animal, and it's a mistake to try and replicate classroom learning on a 1:1 basis.
There are discussions and courses and studies going on now to figure out how to improve online learning, and what it comes down to is that it needs to look foundationally different.
Discussion board posts - unless it's a topic people really care about, you're going to get "I agree! Really thoughtful, thanks for posting" - this is where rubrics come in handy, you have to actually post something with insight that speaks to the course materials and learning. An "I agree!" post would get a reduced grade from me when I teach, which would be backed up by the rubric.
What I try to do with my posts is make them a little bit cheeky. They're not hard-shelled academic - they're insightful, supported by course materials and citations, but they're conversational. That makes it easier for people to create a response with content. That said, I still hate doing it and would like it to be over please and thank you. (Spring '26... just a few more terms!)
Do people get credit for “saying the same thing as another person” ?
This is my big dilemma, not exclusive to online learning. In many classes there is a perceived implication to produce novelty.
Even in foreign language classes where they ask people where they live (uhh all of us live on campus ?)
I think part of it is the instructor not blatantly saying, “you may be repetitive, but that doesn’t matter” and students perception that people get rewarded more for novel answers.
I like the idea of not showing other people’s responses until you have responded ? To give everyone a chance to even have their own thought and then validate that by seeing other people thought the same or different from them.
I think at that point it's just an assignment. The point of discussion board posts is to read what others have posted and to let it influence your thought process and insights on the course materials. If responses are going to be locked until you post, might as well just make it a dropbox assignment that's viewable by the rest of the class.

I have to disagree here, when the exams are done well. As an undergraduate in physics in a good department, in higher level courses, exams were often something to look forward to. We'd sit down to a few hard, satisfying problems to work through, with ample time; we might have a three hour test with three questions, for example. (For even higher-level courses, we often had essentially the same format, but as take-home assignments.) When chosen well, the questions really let us show our understanding of the material and the cleverness of our thinking. Grading was based on our explanations, so making a stupid mistake somewhere was not ruinous. The tests, to some extent, felt like a conversation with the professor, and something that, had there been more time, could have been done as an oral exam in front of a chalkboard; one professor had a tradition of taking his own exams alongside us. I still remember some of the more exciting questions decades later.
Later, as a TA in a course with similar styles of take-home assignments, it was also fun for us: the professor and I would come up with what we thought were really interesting questions, with some room for creativity and exploration, and would be excited to see what we got back. For one question, I can remember that we noted the point was to find an approximate solution: one student, now reasonably known in our field, did that, then continued on to their failed attempts at an analytic solution. In grading the assignment, we were pleased to comment that, while they hadn't succeeded, they had gotten further than we had. For other questions, students could occasionally take completely different approaches, from their different backgrounds, and I would end up learning things I hadn't known.
Of course, all of these were small classes at well-funded research universities, taught by faculty with low teaching loads, often 1/1/1s, 1/1/0s, or even 1/0/0s.
I respect that, and I think that it speaks to the strength of the course materials and your interest in the content that you still remember essay questions that got you REALLY thinking. That's exciting. That's the point of education, and those are the moments I love - when things click and you put the knowledge to use and it's just works and it's fantastic.
I still post that exams aren't a good assessment tool for several reasons - chief of which that I've been navigating in my career recently, that they not accessible and cause undue stress in a good number of students. Exams will typically form about 30% of a final grade in my experience - people panic. For people who don't do well with strict timelines, don't do well under pressure, or who need support with memory recall, it's a miserable experience. Me personally - I'm great at tests. Always a strong student in that respect. But it's not for everyone, and I've seen people fail courses not because they didn't do the work or didn't understand the material, but because the assessment tool didn't work for the way they process information and share it back, or that it caused so much anxiety that they couldn't function in the days leading up.
I also think that the environment around exams is stress inducing - no books, no notes, no food or drink except maybe a water bottle, complete silence - ideal circumstances for some, and a sensory-deprived nightmare for others.
I always come back to what is the point of education. The point is to share knowledge. What is the point of assessment - to ensure students are obtaining and retaining the knowledge and can apply it practically. What is the point of that knowledge and practical application - to apply to their daily practice/careers/research/further study. Learning is like lifting weights - a little bit of stress does help the process, but too much and you break things. I've seen too many students break and give up not because they didn't understand or didn't have good ideas, but because the system was too rigid and too unnecessarily stressful for them to participate.
Calculators were this for a while, most people my age have heard the "but you won't carry a calculator in your pocket every day" from a teacher and roll their eyes at it then and now.
Strictly speaking, AI use is cheating but I don't think calling it that will help us in any way move past it. It's simply utterly and completely incompatible with the current method of education. This far outstrips any effect anything had on the education system since almost ever.
We'll need to adapt just like we did with calculators. Though far more radical change is required this time.

I completely disagree. Have you used it to quiz yourself? It's an incredible force multiplier. At no point in history did I have a pocket tutor available. I can even practice my Russian in back and forth conversations which it scales to my level.
Just today I asked it to quiz me on the Mexican revolution and asked if it could provide context as well as criticism focused on improvement points, and to point out where my answers were starting to explore broader topics before giving answer about the direct causal effects. It continued doing this consistently, continuing on through the 1848 revolutions and the 1871 Paris commune.
While one has to caution for inconsistencies in its answers, I had not found any throughout. It does quite well when it regurgitates factuals.
After today, I feel much more secure in my knowledge of these revolutions. Wish I could prepare for tests in this way when I was still in school.
I want to know why you think it's incompatible with education. While it's used incorrectly today by flat out cheating through an essay, it seems to me that, if anything, the potential is immense.
Admittedly, it needs to tone down the glazing. It's saying I'm incredible every chance it gets and I asked it at one point to tone it down because sometimes wrong answers are just wrong.

If LLMs were accurate or reliable, they may be useful in the way you suggest. They are not designed to be either of those things, though.
They're accurate enough to cheat for your college degree, and accurate enough for me to tutor me on the Mexican revolution.
Though yes, I get your point and I agree. It has the ability to make up quotes from real historical people that when pressed will have the LLM admit it made it up.
It's not there.. yet. Mostly. It only takes a few pokes and prods to get far enough though.
In my foray today I only had to course correct it once and it wasn't even because it had a fact wrong, but because I asked it to create questions about contemporary issues during those revolutions rather than ask about the ramifications after. It asked me about something out of bounds once.
They're getting good at this, and education needs to pivot. Rather than stubbornly rely on grading papers and having practically every student cheat, there needs to be something that allows people to incorporate the new way of working into learning.
Whether or not I agree this is the right course I'm still uncertain about. What I do know is that this ship has sailed and we better hurry to get back on board. The generation coming up with this paradigm shift is learning nothing whatsoever. I'd rather have them use LLMs in a new educational system and learn something than have them cheat through the old system and learn nothing.
I have been told that new technology is inevitable many times. It's why I put all my money on the blockchain and live in facebook's virtual world with all my NFTs hanging on the wall. Even if the LLM ship has 'sailed,' the thing about ships is that someone steers them. The only reason we would continue to use LLMs is if we all choose to do that. We might well do that, but that is a choice we will or won't make, not some sort of technological inevitability.
It would be significantly easier to make a system where kids can't cheat than it would to incorporate the lying machine into education.
If you agree with the point that LLMs are not designed to be correct or to provide accurate information, I can't fathom how you would imagine that it would have any place in education, which is about providing accurate information to people.
That AI is used so much for cheating says more about how wrong our approach to testing is. You get what you test for, and testing students that have actually learned something is pretty difficult, so forcing them to do assignments that needs to be done in a specific way has led to everyone trying to optimize for that. Which doesn't necessarily say much about what the student has actually learned.
Maybe teachers should evaluate the student's prompts instead? Evaluating process rather than result.
When I was an instructor, having conversations with the students in office hours is what gave me confidence to know if they understood the material. There were more than a few that were great in office hours, but could not perform come test time. Non-open ended tests and non-project based assessments were always a crap shoot.
Teachers have always known that “teach to the test” was going to create the mess that it has. That, and no child left behind, in the USA 🤡 oh and of course, whole word reading……………
What do educators think we should do ? Burn it all down ?
