Will it really even be Rick and Morty? I don't think I'll care very much anyway; the aggressive nihilism turned me off (if nothing matters, why should I care what happens to them?).

Problem is, how far can you go with that? You can tell lots of creepy stories and tear at peoples hearts about how nothing actually matters as long as you want, but eventually it's going to become a boring old tired trope.

So the writers had to balance this edge on this story by making you care about the characters and totally undermining the whole point of the original comedy.

And then Rick and Morty got too popular for its own good and got super cringe-worthy with the whole McDonalds Szechuan sauce debacle and they started hating their own audience, causing them to become very preachy for a couple of seasons.

Show got too big for its own weight and kind of stumbled, although the last season was very good and started to find a good stride again.

I don't think the show was getting preachy about the fan base bring cringe, so much as people missing the entire point of Rick. A lot of alt right libertarian types were holding him up as an example to be emulated. A guy who doesn't care what people think of him and does whatever he wants. So Harmon wrote an episode where Rick dies and keeps running into nazi versions of himself.

Harmon always had a meta theme to his stuff. The guy is obsessed with story structure and perfecting the art of writing and storytelling. You see a lot of it in Community as well. I think he struggles a little with the wacky one off adventures vs long form character arcs and growth. Which is something the show has sort of a running self commentary on.

Overall I'm excited for where the next season looks like it's going. Giving Rick a concrete goal that doesn't go away with dimension hopping, and an antagonist that's at least as powerful as him, should help with a lot of the shows structure problems.

We enjoyed the first 2 seasons somewhat, but the 3rd went really ham with something...probably just constant shouting, we just didn't bother continuing.

Honestly I think the best stuff was probably by Harmon anyway, hopefully the voice actors are good though.

On one hand I think losing Roiland's personal "improvisational tone" is going to be a pretty big drag on the show, but on the other Harmon still nailed Community after losing and adding new cast members, plus being removed himself for a season. I was honestly hoping they'd just drop the characters and call it "The Smiths" or something though.

After I watched the original short that inspired Rick & Morty, I was disgusted. It was basically "Rick" asking "Morty" to lick his balls. It was straight up pedophile vibes. I also notice these explicit and implicit in various episodes throughout the show.

    Quotes below from: https://oneofus.net/2014/04/the-origin-of-rick-and-morty/

When watching this show, you might say that the dynamic between the main characters have a striking resemblance to Doc Brown and Marty McFly from Back to the Future. Hell, Rick even looks like Doc, and Morty spelled backwards is Marty (I didn’t get very far in the 5th grade spelling bee). Interestingly enough, co-creator Justin Roiland actually made a short back in 2006 called The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti

NSFW: Warning. This video contains graphic depictions of cartoon sexual content. Viewer discretion is advised.

Had I seen this first, and was told that this was what Rick and Morty was based on, I would have turned my nose up and walked away. I was confused when I first saw this, and wondered how such a juvenile short would get its own series.

    I echo this sentiment.

Internet humor was just in a very weird place back then. YouTube was barely up and running and 90% of funny videos were made by teenagers with a pirated version of flash. This was back when the worst thing you could do on the internet was censor someone. There were no big companies controlling social media and anyone could just make a website and post whatever they wanted.

I don't want it to sound like I'm excusing it, but it was pretty run of the mill for that time period.

Oh my that is uncomfortable to watch. The first episode is straight up depicting child sexual abuse, it's kinda scary how that passed as "okay". Even under the guise of comedy that's pushing it.

I think I'm out of the loop. If Roiland is acquitted of all charges, why is the voice still being recast?

Not meaning to be critical of you here, but I always disliked that term. Underage women aren't women. They're girls, and we need to dial up the creep factor when we talk about this stuff.

Criminal liability is much harder to prove, and the crime can have been committed, but a procedural barrier (based on the preservation of rights, not necessarily a bad thing) can lead to an acquittal.

Echoing Sisyphus's comment here - we should call them as they are, which is underaged girls. Underaged "women" are girls. "Women" implies adulthood.

It's one of those "not enough evidence to convict as a criminal", but more than enough to show he's a shitty person that you don't want attaches to your show.

They have multiple seasons contracted for people who aren't Roiland, they can't just drop it without eating a shitload of money. May as well just let it ride and see where it goes.

If it keeps you sane in the wake of every big-ticket creator / author / musician / programmer / milkshake duck with a behavior debacle / sex scandal / trying to sell NFTs... Just remember, almost every show and movie and book and album and game is the cooperative work of everyone involved, even if the bad egg was truly a major driving force behind it. Think Marcia Lucas and Star Wars, you never know - if everyone else feels like they can put out a quality show then hey. Just gotta wait and see.

I hope it's this guy who replaces Roiland. Apparently he was already talking with Roiland before the allegations about being on the show and even had Roiland coaching him on his impression(s). I get what they did with solar opposites, but I really hope they try and find someone with a similar sounding voice for Rick and Morty. I know it could be explained away, but it would be extremely jarring in my opinion.

Edit: I just found this video of his from last month where he recorded his voice over a clip of Rick and Morty, and I'm willing to bet that if you weren't told, you could never tell. It would be an absolute travesty if they don't use this guy...

Wouldn't be surprised if they used AI to make a voice that sounds almost exactly the same as the original.
