I like coffee. I like James's videos. If I stopped drinking coffee, I'd still watch his content. He's seriously dedicated and knowledgeable on the subject, with just the right amount of silliness....

As for celebrities and their coffee, I have no time for that. But if that is what gets you into enjoying a serious cup, then I say fine then. James's take on this is very insightful, as always. I too, was entertained by how close he came guessing each brand.

If you like James Hoffman but want more silliness in your life, have you heard of Hames Joffman?

Yeah, back up within a few days. Sadly, there haven't been more videos posted since then. I'm not sure if the impersonation scare turned them off from doing more in the same vein.

Small correction: author is different. Original Hames Joffman author decided to stop uploading videos (it seems). In this channel description there is a text: Not Hames Joffman.

Ah, sorry team. I really thought it was the same guy for some reason. Well, he does a good job I think, and could certainly carry the mantle.

That makes sense. Hoffman Cometh is much, much snappier with the video editing, and has a different humorous tempo.

His distinguishing between merch coffee and brand coffee makes sense. I kind of just assumed all celebrities wanted to sell their brands off and never thought about the advantage to just selling it as merch.

Also crazy how good he was guessing which coffee was which, just based on the bags and descriptions.

I was actually saddened to see that Dethklok has not made a Duncan Hills option. I honestly had no idea celebrities were doing this these days, but I'm not too snobby with coffee.

Yeah neither am I, although I grind beans and use an auto drip instead of a Keurig so that seems kind of snobby these days. I never see celebrity coffee where I am so I also didn't really know it...

I do not see the point of running things through AI just to tell other people about what the machine said. But I really think there's something specifically ironic in this case.

That video is almost half an hour long. I’m not sufficiently interested in celebrity coffee brands to devote that much time to learning about them. On the other hand, I’m perfectly happy to skim a written summary to get the essentials.

It really annoys me that everything has to be a frigging video nowadays, when the actual content can barely fill four or five bullet points.

It just seemed particularly ironic in this situation.

Always follow the money. Writing is hard, but vlogging to your camera is easy. Especially when you just smash-cut through your raw take to remove your "uhh ... ummm ... hmmmm ... oops" and other fuck ups. So they all want to vlog instead.

Yeah, it's not all that great. A lot of that stuff would be better as a blog, but they want the cash.

But what do people read to the camera? Yup, it's a script. And that doesn't write itself. Writing a good script is arguably more difficult than a blog post, because video is much less forgiving of bad pacing and repetitive phrasing. Then there's all the time to shoot b roll, set up lighting and audio, not to mention hours of editing and post processing. Making a good quality video is a lot of skill and effort.

YouTube can be a living. Your statement that "they want the cash" can also be phrased as "they have rent and bills to pay and don't want to give away their labour for free". Your entertainment is not a charity case.

I'd say that AI summary missed a lot of the nuance in the video. The video presents a pretty interesting discussion with a commercial director at a large roaster that backs these celebrity brands. The claim is that they let the celebrity be as hands-on as they want with their vision for the coffee and brand they'll sell. I'm sure many celebrities do take the easy paycheck and just trade their name for a check, but the video presents it as the celebrity approaching the roaster rather than the other way around. How much of that is Matthew (the commercial director) presenting it in a PR friendly way is anyone's guess.

Hoffmann also theorizes that some celebrities are doing this as the ultimate flex or summit to climb. Some celebrities will just slap their name on and call it a day (as you summarized), while others are building an image and brand that they want to take to the next level, and it's the latter group that's more interesting.

I just hope we can identify a solution that isn’t reverting i to feudalism.
