Tildes Minecraft Survival Bi-Weekly Thread

Server host: tildes.nore.gg
Dynmap: https://tildes.nore.gg

The server operates on a soft whitelist. Anyone can log in and walk around, but you need a Tildes account to gain build access.

Server Changelog

  • Added support for connecting from Bedrock Edition. Just plug in the same server host as for Java Edition. No need for a Java Edition account either.
    • If you have both editions you can link your accounts here. Then when you log in through Bedrock Edition you will log into your Java Edition account (with its name and inventory)
  • Updated to 1.20.2 (Please update your client!)
  • Added a slick custom plugin that automatically makes links in chat clickable (for Tildes account holders only)
  • Changed to only require one player sleeping in a bed to skip night
  • Created a custom treasure hunt plugin with more functionality than the previous (lag inducing) script

I'm curious to know how people are going to vote on the mob vote coming up.

Here's the list of mobs that have been announced, where you can find them, and what features they will bring to the game.

    1. The Crab
Crabs will be added to the mangrove biome, and will drop their claws. Their claws will allow players to place blocks from a farther distance.

    2. The Armadillo
The armadillo will be found in savannah biomes. It will drop scutes, which can be used to craft armor for your pet dog.

    3. The Penguin
The penguin will be found on stony shores, and will help your boat move faster.

    Would you pick 1, 2, or 3?

I am rooting for penguins, for a few reasons.

The first is that penguins are cuter and I think them being social, curious about players, graceful in water, and clumsy on land is more interesting than the crab's wave or the 'dillo rolling into a ball.

Of the three biomes mentioned, mangrove swamps have low visibility due to foliage so an extra mob won't do anything to make the place feel more alive. And savannas are in the biome vote queue with two mobs coming, termites and ostriches. Both those biomes have unique trees to boot. Meanwhile stony shores lack even the basic passive mobs since they only spawn on grass, and a mob there would do wonders to bring life to the biome.

The only way wolf armor will maaaybe make wolves worthwhile is if it's enchantable and I don't see that happening. Crab claws are just as likely to be worth the inventory slot as not. Meanwhile you can use boats to nullify fall damage, pacify pesky melee mobs including endermen and their teleportation, prevent a mob from despawning if you don't have a nametag handy, and travel faster than elytra with ice roads. Boats are so useful that I have one near my hotbar from day 1 to endgame. Even in the rare instance that I don't, I almost always have a stack of logs on me or a tree nearby.

So a feature that improves boats, however small, is guaranteed upside that doesn't cost a precious inventory slot. If they had said the claw broke blocks in addition to just placing them, or if the extra reach ability was an enchantment instead of an item, it would probably tip me in favor of crabs. But as it stands, I can't be sure the claw will be worth the slot until it's in the game, well after the vote. So I am voting for cute penguin boat upgrades.

I'm honestly underwhelmed by all 3 choices. Longer reach would be nice (how much longer? Same as creative?), but does it mean we'd need to have the crab claw in the off hand all the time? Wolf armor is alright I guess. Faster boat movement is meh when elytra are a thing.

If we're ignoring changes to gameplay, I'd vote armadillo so that we have a little more life in savanna biomes.

Then, again, the boat is arguably the best item in the game (vid is about speedrunning, but also mentions its use in general; and it's very true imo): https://youtu.be/07WUv-Pn2iM?si=gjPGoYlMQlApey7Z

Keep in mind I might not know if the boat was nerfed now or so. Since a long time I almost only play on modded beta versions (where the boat isn't even that good tho, haha). Just thought it could be interesting to see.

Armadillo is the cutest option. I think the amount of dev time allocated to the mob vote is pretty limited. Phantoms and glow squid were also pretty meh.

Right? Does the penguin need to be in the boat to be helpful, or do you get a temporary boost by being nearby like dolphins provide?

Personally I feel like the crab is the best option. Dog armor seems cool but I would like that to come with other dog buffs and I don't expect that will happen. As for penguins, now that we have elytras boat travel needs to compete with that. That's hard for a water-based mode of transportation.

Built a nice little automated furnace system that I go over in more detail in this imgur album. tl;dl: It's an automated carpet duper that feeds into a rail-based furnace system. And it automatically turns itself off once the final fuel storage chest fill 2/3 of the way up (remaining 1/3 comes from what's already in the hoppers).

The only problem is that I basically have nothing left to smelt/cook. I used all of it up in the testing as I was building it! So if anyone needs to smelt a ton of stuff, feel free to make use of it. Enter the nether roof portal and follow the gray carpets to my portal. It's in the building with the smokestacks. Should be enough fuel loaded into the system to run for a while.

Just drop your cookables into the double chest on the top of the furnace part.

edit: As of Oct 8th I decided to rebuild the furnace entirely. In reworking my item transportation system between storage and the furnace, I learned a lot about comparators, realized how useful chest carts are, realized I don't need a hopper to drop items into furnaces if I have a hopper cart, and lots of other stuff. So I'll be putting that knowledge to use in rebuilding the furnace!

edit2: As of Oct 9th, I removed the carpet duper. The duper itself, the water elevator and hopper system worked really well, but carpet is a terrible fuel source unless you're dumping a full stack of it into a furnace. Which is not something a rail system can do very well.

A single cobblestone needed x2 carpets to turn into stone and the rail-fed system wasn't fast enough. So it ended up wasting a bunch of carpet until the whole system is flooded with carpet and only then can it keep up. So I basically removed everything and created a simpler rail system that just pulls fuel from a chest.

Hey all. I don't really see many people on anymore but...

I've finished 3 holes at the new Tildes Country Club and Golf Course. I'd be happy to have some folks play and provide feedback. There's a book once you enter that has the how-to and game rules.

Note: Riptide 3 can really launch an ender pearl if you time it right, so it can go into unloaded chunks and disappear. Only the driving range has a chunk loader near the back, so I recommend playing golf with another person and trade off teeing/loading chunks. The other option is to play with elytra on and enter fly mode once you throw the ender pearl so you glide after it. Don't use rockets doing this - it can get a little weird (and dangerous) sometimes.

To get to the course, get to the nether roof from town. Follow the lime green carpet passed the gold farm. A green carpet will split off. Follow that to the golf course.

Slowly continuing work on the spleef arena, mostly the underside support pillars/arches since I haven't settled on a good design for the main above-ground structure yet. I also keep being distracted by ideas for other projects entirely, like a scenic railway looping around the sea to the south of town.

Underneath there (on Wealdstone Road in town) is a functional-but-not-pretty rail tunnel that leads to the desert to the southeast. Stops at the jungle (1000, 1200), west desert (1500, 1200), and central desert isle near red sand (2000, 1200). Eventually extending into the badlands (2500, 1200) but need to lay the rest of the rails for that. Wouldn't mind having the Acacia Line extend south from the Trading Hall to connect with the end in town but it's nowhere close to being ready yet.

I was considering elevating Lonely Mountain Road since I'd like to keep a clear waterway for boating around the town. However I'm not sure if it even gets used at all, especially with the less-lit section running by the swamp.

I'd love to be able to collect mob heads (maybe make them kinda rare considering how often some mobs get killed) and maybe even player heads, and on a similar note another server I played on had mini-blocks (which were customised mob-heads) for every kind of block that you can get, and were sold by the wandering trader.

These options (especially the mini-blocks) are great for adding a little extra decoration around your builds, and they're heaps fun to collect!

Since the last thread update, I've made a trident farm that's fast rates but dangerous (literally just an enormous block of water, about a chunk wide and 8 chunks long, all the way up to build limit) so if you're planning on heading out that way, make sure you bring good armour, good food, and most importantly a shield! Tridents will hurt even with endgame gear!

To get out there, follow the prismarine path -- it now forks at the guardian farm and continues for about twice the distance -- but if you're after a lot of tridents, that's probably your best bet.

Thanks for this. I spent a lot of time there getting all the tridents for the golf course. Only died once. Wearing full armor instead of elytra really helps

I once played on a server where you could combine a chest plate and elytra to get armoured elytra, and I enjoyed getting the defence back but I think being forced to make that trade off makes the game more interesting.

The only thing about using a chestplate in your farm instead of elytra is when you need to jump out the side for air. I am so used to having elytra, that I forget when I don't have it.

Bedrock support is awesome. Last time I tried it on one of my servers it was clunky. I'm glad people are continuing to improve support and closing the gap between versions.

If anybody wants a redstone project:

The piglin bartering system gets pretty backed up after a long session - to the point the dropper elevators stop working.

I've already redone the hopper lines which helped, but the problem simply comes down to hoppers being so slow.

If has any idea on how to fix and improve the migration of items from the dropper elevators to the storage system, please feel free to tackle it. I've exhausted myself trying to get it to work nicely

If it’s an issue that things get backed up in the pipes before they get sorted, could that be solved by just having a large buffer between the bartering and the sorting? Like, instead of the hoppers feeding directly into the sorting, they dump everything into some chests and then the sorting happens from there?

This design is immensely helpful for these massive item dumps that large farms like these produce. It utilizes hopper minecarts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQkErJBQSxo

Also not really an expert, but minecart hoppers can be ridiculously fast when used thoughtfully. I had an automated bamboo farm in a world once that fed a super smelter array, and I used stacked (think how tnt minecarts get stacked/glitched in the same block space) hopper minecarts to buffer a huge backlog of bamboo.

That, and also there's the putting a chestboat on top of 4 hoppers, but I'm not redstoner so idk if that's helpful.

I took a look this morning at my mods to update them to the 1.20.2 version, but unfortunately almost all my mods do not have a 1.20.2 version yet. I'm still away and not expecting to get really back to the server until Tuesday, but it's a bit disappointing that I won't be able to use the (almost exclusively) QoL mods..

In case anyone is wondering about their mods, these are updated:

    • Xaeros Map & Xaeros minimap

    These of mine are not:

    • Optifine (1.20.1 only) (standalone & forge mod)
    • Litematica (1.20.1 only) (fabric mod)
    • Forgematica (1.20.1 only) (forge mod)
    • Inventory Profiles Next (forge version is only 1.20.1)

    Hopefully these will update soon...

You'll likely see a performance improvement over Optifine using Sodium/Lithium, and you can still use the shader you're used to using Iris. There's even a connected textures mod and texture pack. The only thing I miss from Optifine is hitting Z to zoom in, but I'm sure there's another Fabric mod for that :)

There is definitely a mod for zoom, and in the past I've seen one that assigns a hotkey to use a spyglass if you have one in your inventory. I especially like that one because you have to work to get the zoom in game, but don't have to always keep the spyglass on the hot bar. If I get a chance later I'll see if I can track those mods down and edit this comment.

Update: I'm pretty sure I've used Logical Zoom, and it looks like it might still be maintained. No 1.20.2 version as of this comment, but 1.20.1 is there.

There is also Zoomify but I can't recall if that was the one I used before with the spyglass integration. It does look promising though and is all the way up to date.

I’m playing on 1.19.4 and connecting with via fabric plus to the server on 1.20.2, I can’t recommend this setup enough. It works great for me and it’s all client side.
