If you've seen me before in a gaming post, you've probably seen me talk about NMS. For YEARS we have been asking for an update to world generation and variety, and every year we get pleasantly surprised by everything but that. Now it's finally here with a new expedition to go along with it.

This update apparently doesn't touch terrain generation itself, but there's also a Part II on the way, so who knows what that will entail.

      This Part I does mention:

Terrain generation has been rewritten to incorporate dual marching cubes voxel meshing, increasing loading speed, improving framerate and saving memory.

Is it available yet? I didn't see an expedition available today.

23 hours by the math of this comment. Pretty sure I was playing after that. And I've got my settings maxed. Something doesn't sit right.

I think it's time to pick it up again. Last time I played was 2019. I played on release too so I was already astounded with how much changed on my second go. The third time should be just as exciting!

I really hope one day to see a documentary about what goes on inside Hello Games and how they got to a place where they could ship major updates to the engine and game so frequently—almost every time they announce an update it feels like the last one only just came out. I'm not sure any other studio is doing that without compromising on a lot (crunch, overhiring, formulaic "content" updates, etc).

Saw the trailer earlier and it looks exciting! The team at Hello Games have been doing amazing work turning around the game from its initial launch state. I played the game at launch and was so disappointed that I left it untouched until 2020. Played through the main story and absolutely loved it. It is a bit grindy at times but still a lot of fun. Look forward to trying this update when I get home.

It's a huge universe and it's way more fun to discover and learn with a friend. Combat, finding the perfect ship, finding the perfect system to call home, finding specific resources - much more fun with a friend.

I sort of had the opposite experience. I love NMS in single player, so I picked up a copy for my nephew and we tried to meet up in game. There was a lot of glitchiness just trying to get together initially, and my attempts to help him through the tutorials just made the whole experience rocky. Maybe it would have been different if we were both at the same level and unlocking the same things. Not sure.

Regardless, the game is a fantastic value for single player alone. And the more general multiplayer does add a lot of fun and community.

Depends what you want to do, but at the end of the day it's all about exploring and mining resources to build or buy more stuff.

Basically you search for resources, make bases, explore new solar systems, and fight things. It's perhaps a bit less structured than other games, although there is a pretty decent length "story mode" which is actually kind of just a really long and interesting tutorial. Definitely fun but there is still a lot to do when you finish it.

You'll be roaming around and see a unique ship and decide you want to figure out how to get one for yourself. Or you might be travelling through space and something interesting happens that pushes you off on a detour to go do a bunch of stuff. Sometimes you're just working towards a cool or helpful upgrade to your base.

It was hard to know when we were done though because there are a lot of little hidden things, so we looked up a list of things to do online and just started going through it like a checklist. We wanted to see and do everything we could. We keep saying we want to play again since they've added so much more since then.

I played 2 years ago and one thing that got me was the sheer length of the tutorial missions. They are thinly guised as story, but they are really tutorial to show you everything in the game, which is great because the game is absolutely massive. But I think I played for like 50 plus hours or something and didn't finish then, I don't even know how many I had left.
I had a freighter and had all the research stuff done, but I knew I still had not done any of the content from the last few patches and had no idea how to access the content, I'd assumed the tutorial/story would lead me there but it's pretty glacially paced.
Anyway, it's an incredibly chill game, I had a lot of fun just playing it and messing around rather than trying to achieve something. There's so much to see and do you won't even know about!

Agree. I can only play for a short time before it crashes on my midrange gaming setup. But that short time is amazing. Flying a spaceship in NMS is perfectly suited for VR.

At its core it's a survival sandbox. I tell people that so they understand it's a very unguided game. There is a story, but it's more of a slow burning tutorial to introduce you to new mechanics, and after it's done, the universe(s) are your oyster.

Currently with the update there's an event called an Expedition, which you can enter from an existing save or a new one. Basically everyone starts on the same planet and have the same mission goals. They're a fun way to get some cool cosmetics and tools if you're starting out.

On the other hand you could just start a new regular save. Expeditions can be an odd start for somebody who's never played. Recommend having a wiki open, it's definitely one of those kind of games. And once you get the ball rolling, set goals for yourself. Find something you enjoy doing and then figure out how far you can go with it.

Jump in on an expedition! Some are more "show you the ropes" ones, but fhey're these great condensed experiences.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but at least in the US it is on sale on Steam. 60% off is a good chunk of cash!

      currently out of stock :(

GameBillet is selling it at 68% off ($19, $5 less than Steam). They're an authorized vendor and provide Steam keys, I've been happy with them. All time low was less than 25 cents cheaper. currently out of stock :(

I'm really excited to get back into this. The last time I played, I tried it on PSVR2 and the implementation was... not good. But that was a while ago, and I've heard that the Echoes update introduced foveated rendering and fixed it completely. Since then there have been a few more updates, and I'm itching to suit up and try it again now. (Of course, since this is "Worlds Part 1" I'm tempted to wait until "Worlds Part 2" for the full experience...)

Sounds like the update is so huge that people's bases across the universe are being affected and the Galactic Hub has to find a new capital planet. I'm a bit fearful now considering I have like 6 separate bases...

Can confirm. I had a base that I built around my settlement and the update shifted the settlement slightly down and to the side. So all of my carefully placed pieces are now awkwardly offset and hovering a foot off the ground. Honestly though, I'm not even upset. Just gives me an opportunity to find a new place to build something even more grand. 🙂

Last played this like 18 months ago or something- and even at that point the game was very enjoyable and far past the launch mistakes. In that time since I've played, the game has only improved- many patches worth of improvements too.

This update is huge and appears to tackle most of the underlying systems. Multiple systems were rewritten, so this has probably been in the works for a long time. Not just graphic variety and updates, but tons of atmosphere/planet/etc variety too. Tons of optimization and quality of life too.

Excited to jump back into this and experience all that has changed in the time since I last played.
