May 2026 Backlog Burner: Conclusion and Recap

The May 2026 Backlog Burner event is officially over!

Over the month of May, 14 participants moved 176 games out of their backlogs.

Congratulations to the following Bingo winners:

Special congratulations:

  • u/1338 playing a total of 39 games (including many that you can't even buy anymore)
  • u/aphoenix for masterfully executing a thematically relevant plan for participating
  • u/BailerAppleby for playing so many games from the Tildes Game Giveaways
  • u/dannydotcafe for a truly mellow win
  • u/Durinthal for finishing a game from the 2024 Backlog Burner
  • u/J-Chiptunator for prioritizing their health
  • u/JCPhoenix for posting awesome Let's Plays
  • u/Wes for his many thoughtful comments

To everyone who played games, shared their thoughts, or even just read through the comments for the event:

This event is amazing because y'all all make it amazing. Thank you for playing.

Use this topic to post your final bingo cards, give recaps of your games, and share any thoughts you have on the event itself.

Who won?

The question on everyone's mind.

The feud between the Motivateds and the Mellows was a (possibly one-sided?) rivalry for the ages.

Who came out on top?

Well, I'm happy to report that the final numbers are in, and the Grand Winners are:

Winner

πŸŽ‰ Team Mellowtivated πŸŽ‰

We are all one team! There's no actual rivalry. We've actually been gaming together as one wonderful little group this whole time! (Now everybody saw "AWWWWWW" and get all sappy)

Also, the jury has returned a verdict in u/Wes's trial:

Verdict

He has been found guilty of being awesome. His sentence is that he is required to feel immensely proud of his community service in making the amazing Backlog Bingo site and responding thoughtfully to everyone all month long.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this. I really hoped to have gotten a blackout on all cards, but I achieved the goals I set out from the beginning, nevertheless. It was fun, I got to talk about video games, and maybe share a controversial opinion or two. I appreciate having the chance to take part.

I've been at Tildes for three years now, but only now have I noticed this event. I think if I were to do this again, I'd try to better plan out my picks. As well, I would choose games that were shorter, easier to finish, and weren't so mind-numbingly difficult; Atmasphere, Still There, and The Textoricist are some of the most difficult games I've ever played in my life. I mentioned that for The Textorcist, I will need to further train myself to be able to advance in the game.

As was my mission from the start, this backlog burner had everything to do with the fine people here who shared their games with me, so I'd like to share my thanks by recognizing them again:

Gifters: Thank you for your generosity!

For me, a month of playing 19 videogames is rare, and the experience was a lot like a film festival in that I kept comparing them with each other. So with that, here's a rundown of all the games I played for the month, ranked by whether I'd recommend them or not; the higher their place in the list, the higher they rank in that category.

    Yay or Nay

    Recommended Games

    • Proteus
    • Still There
    • Generation Zero
    • Hatoful Boyfriend
    • Doki Doki Literature Club
    • The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia
    • Homebody
    • Not Tonight 2
    • Atmasphere
    • Guild of Darksteel

    Non-Recommended

    • Tales of the Neon Sea
    • Bendy and the Ink Machine
    • The Shapeshifting Detective
    • Breakneck

Incomplete Playthroughs, but Worth Playing More:

    • Tails Noir
    • Legend of Grimrock 2
    • Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
    • Octahedron

And, if it's okay, here are my "awards" for the best games I played this month, each accompanied by a SomethingAwful-One-Sentence-Review-type blurb:

The May 2026 BailerAppleby Tildes Backlog Burner Video Game Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence

    Most Innovative: Proteus

This is it: The first 3.5D video game.

    Most Emotional: Still There

The far reaches of outer space can't compare to the yawning blackness of a grieving heart.

Most Complete Package/Biggest Surprise: Generation Zero

Shooting giant robots. In Sweden. In the 80s ...is more fun/dev-supported than you can imagine.

Best Genre Bending: The Textoricist: The Story of Ray Bibbia

The Vatican-underworld-dwelling exorcism bullet hell you'll be lining up at St. Peter's gate for, and as much as you may already harbor strong opinions about spelling games, just admit it: this is your type.

    Most Creative: Hatoful Boyfriend

The game for anybirdy who always wanted to fly, but will settle for dating it instead.

Most Relevant to Our Times: Not Tonight 2

Too absurd to be taken seriously, too serious to ignore, and too emotionally draining to stay invested in, the only way to properly experience the epoch-changing current events that we live through day to day is for a NPC to explain it to you in a cutscene.

Hidden Gem (that everybody should play): Homebody

The best of the X-Files, made for millennials.

    Most Difficult: Atmasphere

The incredibly relaxing way to endear yourself to apoplectic rage.

Best Vibe (modern): Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

The future is cool, oppressive, and one where square pants are still in fashion.

    Best Vibe (retro): Octahedron

The old-school vector platformer that is only missing a quarter slot, a high-score slot, and a triangle retrowave carpet beneath your feet.

Most True to Self: Tails Noir

    Timeless.

Best Writing/Concept: Doki Doki Literature Club

The collective geek punishment we deserve that grants vengeance to the objects we covet.

Thanks to @Wes and @kfwyre for running the show, and to @JCPhoenix for the recommendations, and for all the feedback I got. It was great, thank you all for a successful Backlog Burner!

Your writeups were a ton of fun to read. You've got a way with words, and I liked that you were willing to be honest about your frustrations (e.g. Tales of the Neon Sea/Neonsea) as well as thoughtfully reflective (e.g. Proteus).

I tend to be a bit of a Pollyanna who loves everything or at the worst tries to see the best in everything, so seeing someone willfully take a more critical eye was nice, especially because the criticisms make your endorsements stronger because they feel more earned.

It was awesome having you in the event, Bailer! Thanks for participating so enthusiastically. Plus, playing games from the Tildes Game Giveaways made this THE crossover event of the season.

I like video games a lot. I like talking about them even more. It makes for an exciting lifestyle choice when it comes to banter on the intertubes. I made it a point at the beginning of this year to resolve my online habits to include contributing to the Weekly What Have You Been Playing. And then this came along.

So that's my story. There's more to the lore, but it will only be brought up when it's relative to the ongoing narrative/action set-piece.

I just figure, if I'm going to be offering my thoughts on something as peripheral to our lives as a video game, you mights as well:

        • be honest and say what you're thinking
        • get to the point of what makes it good or bad
        • cut through the BS that clutters most reviews
        • alternatively, provide analysis that isn't there

Yes. Just like a good Yelp review. But the thing about video games is that most video game reviews are terrible. They're written by people who don't know what to write for people who don't know what they want, scored out of 100. If these four points were to be applied to video game reviews, it would be a watershed moment for the industry/hobby.

Not to hype myself up, but I have controversial opinions on what a video game review should be. Nerds may hold all the power these days, but they also have the most to lose.

    Another backlog, successfully burned.

I'm kind of blown away by the number of games that everybody played this time around. I thought I was motivated, but I have been humbled! Major respect to those putting out 30+ games in one month! Now that's channeling the backlog burner spirit.

For those on Team Mellow, my former allies, I must commend your skills. What you lack in quantity has more than been made up for in your thoughtfulness and care. I concede now that there may be value in gentle reflection after all.

As for me and my backlog, I've since gone back and completed a few titles, and decided to officially drop others. Here's my final list.

    Games by Status

    Finished (8)

    Dropped (5)

    Bugged (2)

    Ongoing (4)

I did actually end up playing more than I expected (leading to a bit of an, erm, betrayal). I was worried I'd be unable to participate, as I suffered some nerve damage in my arm earlier this year, so my ability to game has been diminished. Thankfully, I was still able to take part, though I focused mostly on controller-based games this time around. So lots of racing games and platformers. Hopefully next time I'll be able to mix it up a bit more.

But as always, it was a ton of fun, and I'm left with a smattering of games that I've newly discovered. I've been itching to get back into Hades and Tinykin, both of which I greatly enjoyed. I also may have added more games to my backlog from your excellent recommendations.

The rivalry this time around was a ton of fun. I love this event, and I'm thrilled that it's starting to gain its own culture. But whether motivated or mellow, I want to thank you all for participating.

And of course, my deepest thanks for our affable host and emcee, @kfwyre. You're a genuine treasure -- even if you did find me guilty.

Too bad I never got to any of the weird squares on my card, maybe next time so I won't elaborate on them just yet. The good news is my backlog really has decreased compared to the start of the year as I haven't bought any new games since December, and I'm hoping to continue that for the rest of the year and shrink it some more come November.

I had an unexpected trip in the past week so lost a lot of potential play time, but I'm still glad that this motivated me to finish three games that I really had wanted to get around to. FFIV, DDLC, and Transistor weren't just "game in my library that I haven't played yet" entries like a lot of others tend to be for me, and they're going to stick with me for a while longer.

Congrats on shrinking your backlog! I've taken a similar strategy to yours, and find it helps with my mindset.

I also played Doki Doki Literature Club for this backlog. Personally, I can't believe it took me so long to play this free game, so it's just as well I finally got around to it on a backlog burner. As the

      coughFatal Attraction
of our medium, this remains an important game that all gamers should play.

      Speaking in hushed tones,

      spoiler talk

I heard that DDLC has different story paths depending on your choices. I for sure do not want to play it again soon, and neither do I really want to go back down into that rabbit hole, so what was your story like? I concentrated my attention on Yuri and so was able to read a book next to her and feed her chocolate. As a result, Sayori was the first victim, and then Yuri was the second for which I spend the entire weekend looking at her, spamming the button to skip time as fast as possible.

Was your experience similar? Hope you're not too disturbed by this game.

Technically I played the non-free Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! version but I believe the base game is the same:

        Doki Doki Spoiler Club

From the poking around I did it seems there are five character graphics to get - one each for Sayori, Natsuki, and Yuri for writing poems targeting their interests, and then either Natsuki or Yuri for choosing to help them prepare for the festival. Regardless of your choices you get the same ending with Sayuri and then the reset leads to the weekend with Yuri before Monika takes over.

I wasn't quite sure on some of the specifics but I had known enough going in that I was prepared, outside of a few jump scares.

It's not my favorite given the themes aren't the kind of thing I typically enjoy but I understand what it was going for here which is why I did want to get through it eventually.

I completely disregarded the girl's interests while writing the poems, instead focusing on trying to create a coherent theme. My first poem was about Summer! I was crushed when my work was criticized. I was too distraught to notice who I'd begun to woo.

As for the festival, I ended up baking with Nat. I kept trying to check on Sayori, though, since the game had provided plenty of red flags for her by that point. That was when things starting going off the rails, and not much romancing was to be had thereafter.

There is a cut dark ending, "Escape from the Margarita Zone". The game even still has some small hints towards it in a couple of the routes, I think they cut it fairly late into development. Data miners managed to find old files related to it deep in the code, so they added it back in as an Easter egg and non-canon secret ending.

If anyone wants to experience it blind, I copied the steps from the wiki to activate it in the spoiler box below. If you're just curious, the wiki and pretty much anything else talking about it give away the details of why it's dark pretty much immediately.

Finish all routes in the game, then select the following settings during the Build that Dad:

                    Thick tank bod
                    Oval head
                    Balding hair
                    Wide eyes
                    Roman nose
                    Cheese mouth
                    Wizard brows
                    No facial hair
                    Pilot glasses
                    No piercing
                    Tommy bananas suit
                    Name = "Jimmy Buffett"
Hair color, skin color, and eye color have no impact.

If you do all that, and then finish the Build that Dad requirements, creepy music will play while confirming the Dad. A pop-up should appear with a note from the developers. If you want to experience the ending, click "GIVE ME THIS NIGHTMARE" to cut straight to it. The other two options will prevent the ending from occurring.

I do love the idea of you continuing the pattern of closing those doors, so it would be cool to see you play this specific card again in November (especially so I can finally know what a "Heart Event" is).

I actually had a fair number of games that were similar in some ways, and their juxtapositions almost always left me feeling good about one and less good about the other, as is the nature of juxtapositions.

    AI Antagonist

Sir, You Are Being Hunted and Hello Neighbour both have antagonists that are supposed to learn from your actions and adapt their strategies to try to catch you. Overall, I lean a bit towards SYABH as the superior game, but I think that Hello Neighbour is worth checking out, and I'm going to plan on trying out some of the other games in the series later. I do have to give the style points and the vibes more to SYABH though, I love the idea of steampunk gentlemen robots going after you fox-hunt style.

    Frenetic Pixel Heists

Punchline: two nickels. Monaco and Serial Cleaner both had similar vibes, but it was a really unfavourable and maybe unfair comparison for Serial Cleaner. I think there's a good game in there, but it just did not connect with me at all with the interface feeling so janky to me. I really like the concept, and how immediately unhinged the game is - you're immediately get the "I love my job" vibes from the dude cleaning up dead bodies and taking keepsakes. It's a visual delight as well, but I don't think I'll get over the issues with the interface. I'm keeping Monaco to play with my kids some time and likely uninstalling Serial Cleaner

Parkour Stealth Games with Cool Worldbuilding

Styx, Shards of Darkness and Seven, Enhanced Edition both featured parkour and cool worlds in which to do parkour. Styx just caught me off guard with how funny the main character is; the introductory cut scene felt fairly serious, and it seems like it's going to be serious, and then the first time you die, there's a fourth wall break with Styx calling you an idiot, and I was so charmed that I'll be going back to this a fair bit. Seven had a cooler world, but the parkour wasn't as good. Actually, I reread what I had written, and I said it was a series of "not quites" and that is totally it. Everything is good but not quite great, and there were other games that had great vibes.

    The Rest

The other games didn't have as many head-to-head comparisons. I'll get back to SOMA but I'm going to stick with Subnautica 2 for a while. I've put about 6 hours into Sub 2 and I'm really enjoying it thus far, and I will play it all the way through, probably twice, and all the subsequent patches and releases. Invisible Inc. was pretty cool - I like squad based tactics games, and adding in stealth mechanics and making it vaguely heist oriented instead of strictly combat oriented is pretty great. I'll plan to get back to that over the summer at some point.

    The Best Stealth

I originally said that Subnautica 2 was tenuously related, but sneaking past the first collector colossus was intense. The best stealth mechanic in a game was probably in Hello Neighbour - you get an audible cue that the Neighbour is coming when he stomps around towards you. I think it was slick and polished. The game where stealth was the most important factor is probably SOMA because holy crap don't let the monster see you. Subnautica 2 gets an honourable mention there as well, because the best way to deal with leviathans is just not getting caught by them.

    Final Thoughts

Overall, I was glad that I didn't completely miss this event, and I'm happy that my silly stealth entry worked out. @Wes and @kfwyre, you guys are great, love to you both, thank you for putting together a really cool event. And to everyone else who played, I did end up reading all of your journeys, thank you for all the writing about awesome games - I've got a bunch from my backlog now that some of you have played that I have installed to bring into next month... when I'm done with Subnautica for a while.

I hope @Wes doesn't further develop things for this weird edge case.

So in the end I guess I straddled the line. I started the month on Team Mellow, mainly because of my crippling Pokopia obsession. It was hard to pull myself away from it to play other games at first. But as the month went on I became more and more able to resist its siren call, and now I've been freed. And in the final week, I got put on Team Motivated because I managed to pull off two bingo's.

I really was in-between though. I still wanted to get a bingo, so I went with a custom card that allowed for duplicates, but followed standard rules rather than a blackout like a golf card. And I also used the Flux instead of Flow style, because I do find Flow easier. And I avoided ticking off too many squares for each game, though partially because I knew there'd be some overlap.

But it was pretty laidback compared to the last few burners I joined. I just played the games I wanted, and was pleasantly surprised to get multiple bingo's.

This month's standout games for me are definitely Analogue: A Hate Story and Hate Plus. I actually waited to post until finishing Hate Plus's harem route yesterday. They're admittedly more stories than game due to being visual novels (especially Hate Plus), but they're thought-provoking. And Hate Plus... Let's just say I saw some unexpected parallels to current American politics. Even without that, they'll both stay with me for a long time. (Actually kinda wish we could get another one exploring a completely unrelated ship's files with our AI assistant(s). Hate Plus ends on a definite "and the adventure is just beginning" note.) Thanks again to @cheep_cheep for giving me the keys to both during a giveaway!

(Also, a tip to anyone wanting to check them out: use a mouse with a scroll wheel for Hate Plus. I confirmed that the Steam Deck works with wireless mice, and that's the main reason I was able to finish it. Because without the scroll wheel, the interface scrolls through files one single line at a time. It's a pain to reread logs on other routes when you just want to see the other girl's reactions to the contents. So, yeah. Scroll wheel is practically a necessity.)

Overall, this was a good month for me. I broke free of Pokopia's choking hold, my main goal for this month, and can now live my life. I can read more fan fics, and leave the house more. Right now I'm still playing Little Known Galaxy, the game I started at the end of the month, and it's definitely a nice and mellow note to end the month on.

.......Though, while I have been told I will no longer face trial for being switched to Team Motivated at the end of the month due to forgetting Another Crab's Treasure is a soulslike and just wanting to play it for the crabs (and thanks to @kfwyre for that game!), I do still have my defense prepared for anyone who might accuse me:

    It's all @Wes's fault.

He pushed me to keep playing Another Crab's Treasure without changing settings any further until I beat the Duchess, which was a key factor in the decision to switch me to Team Motivated. He (and whoever voted for his comment) then encouraged me to count AI copies of dead people as Zombies, which is how I got my third bingo. If you look at all the bingo's, there are a lot of duplicate squares involved. Hate Plus is the only game on the entire card with only a single square on the board. Well, and Dokimon, but only because I'd already played games that fit the other squares that could work for it. I had no intentions of marking any squares for Hate Plus.

I wanted a bingo, sure, but Wes was the one who encouraged me to act with more motivation! He even admitted to corrupting me! And I was too mellow to resist his corrupting influence and just went with the flow. I am just fortunate it was late in the month and I only had one game with potential motivation-adjacent gameplay on my immediate priority list.

So yeah. To sum up my defense: the switch is all on Wes. Beware his influence, fellow Mellows, or you too may gain a burst of motivation and find yourself swayed to the motivated side...

Besides, I was only helping you. Nudging you in the right direction. Preparing you for your true destiny. To eventually embrace the CHAOTIC WILL OF MOTIVATION, and STRIKE FEAR into the hearts of all backlogged titles.

      Ahem.

Yes, it was a rather productive event. Well done on the custom card. I'm always glad to see folks editing the game rules as I originally envisioned.

As always, thanks to @kfwyre and @wes for putting this together. Aside from just being plain fun, it is nice to have a reason or goal to play these games that’ve been collecting dust since I got them. I played two that've sat in my library for at least 5yrs.

Also, thanks for everyone's comments and reviews. You guys are very thoughtful and thorough. Definitely added more games to my wishlist.

For me, I played more games than expected. As Team Mellow, I was aiming for three or four, but I played seven. So, I'm happy. Pay no attention to the fact that, since the last Backlog Burner, I've picked up 18 games that I've yet to play...

My "sleeper hit" this time around was Halfway. I'm still playing it. Even played today, and I intend to finish it. I'm also still playing Tyrion Cuthbert -- which I honestly think is as good as any Ace Attorney game -- along with The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and Coffee Talk Tokyo.

If you watched/skimmed/glanced at any of my Let's Plays, hopefully they were entertaining or at least gave you a good enough idea of the games. Thanks for checking them out.

Anyway, looking forward to the next event. In the meantime, may your backlogs get shorter each week...or longer, so that we'll have things to play for the next one!

I'm glad that all of them are cleared with no drops or still-in-progress this time (okay Fata Morgana and Mario+Rabbids still have post-game content and DLC for me to go through but still!) even if some if them were quite lengthy. Completed and Liked:

    • The House in Fata Morgana: Without a doubt, the star of the games I've played this month despite being the last entry. It is so, so beautifully tragic and though seeing through the suffering can be an uncomfortable experience, the pain is worth it in the end. Right now I'm looping between Hex and Everybody's Crying from its soundtrack.

    • Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles: Woooo roguelike deckbuilder with dice. I liked it and its balancing act with low max hp and healing makes things tense. Looking forward to climbing the ascensions.

    • Sunblaze: Controls well, lets you plan out the entire room in advance. As far as precision platformers go, I 100%'d it and give the stamp of I can beat this approval.

    Completed:

    • Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: I still like it (or I just like XCOM style tactics in general). It's just in retrospect, I don't feel connected on a personal level or in the same way as when I've played the Shadowrun Returns trilogy or Troubleshooter.

    • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim: Still have to give it credit for the way it constantly has twist after twist which gives that need to see what happens next and figure it all out. I just think it lacks substance after everything is revealed and how it doesn't hold up after the fact.

    • Pyre: The oddball of the Supergiant catalogue and not a requirement in experiencing their history. Still though, it's an experiment that can be worth engaging with an open mind.

    • Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical: Yeah, goes into the Bioware-style ask all the questions, pick which result you want for each arc, pick from one of three responses when talking, and use the special colorful response for a little more oomph.

    • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune: Playable, but definitely dated as a third-person cover shooter.

    Completed out of Spite:

    • Death's Door: I don't think it's bad, but having 4 HP only with no healing is eyebrow-raising as a design decision and the old crow pisses me off.

    Completed and Disliked:

    • Berserk Boy: Playable, but I think there's a lot of bad design decisions all happening at once.

I'm glad I got to participate even a little bit in this Backlog Burner. My time was a bit limited and split across other things, so I wasn't able to add another game to the bingo board last week. Despite that, I'm happy I was able to get a few games out of my backlog.

The not-far-enough explored to add to my board:

Talk about the game Heat Signature, and the developer's previous game

I played a bit of Heat Signature (~40 minutes or so), but not really enough for me to form a true opinion of the game or add it to my board. I was enjoying what I was playing so far though. That, I'd like to play some more of soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed the dev's previous game Gunpoint for its noir style, tongue-in-cheek humor, and clever level design with high tech shenanigans. I'll leave that as a recommendation. If you own it, and haven't played it, it's very, very good, and not very long (~4 hours) - which is actually the one thing I wish was different about it.

Thank you to @Wes for the invitation to participate, and for joining me in multiplayer for one of the entries. It was very enjoyable. You got a colossal stack of games done!

Thank you to @kfwyre for hosting this event, and your comment on my previous post, which I didn't get a chance to answer (Sorry!). (I don't think you're missing too much with your cursed copy of Layers of Fear. :D)

Hopefully I'll fit a little more in during the next event!

In the mean time, I may try to post in the "What games have you been playing, and what's your opinion on them?" scheduled threads as I come across games I'm trying out, perhaps with the 3x3 bingo boards. Artificially limiting myself to certain games actually made it easier for me to just... pick up a game and play something.

I'm definitely sounding like a broken record at this point, but I continue to love these events.

Like, I can and do play through my backlog at any time, but the bingo card, plus the deadline, plus the camaraderie make it feel so much more special than my regular everyday gaming.

As always, a huge thank you to my co-pilot @Wes who, while guilty of being awesome, is of course innocent of any wrongdoing. We didn't plan the Mellow/Motivated "rivalry" by the way. It just sprung up organically from one of Wes's comments and we ran with it, which turned out to be a lot of fun.

I love that we have some recurring regulars at this point (thanks for sticking with it!) as well as some new names joining.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in any way (including any lurkers who simply read our comments!). You all make this a wonderful event and continue to make Tildes my favorite place on the internet. I'm a touch exhausted from being so motivated this month, but I'm sure by November I'll be ready to burn through my backlog some more.

    Recap

I committed to playing non-Steam games simply because Steam gets the most attention from me, but I'm also trying to deliberately branch out and break Steam's lock on "preferred platform" status for me.

Below are the counts for the different platforms that I used:

    • Direct Install: 4
    • Flathub: 3
    • Humble App: 12
    • Indie Pass: 10
    • itch.io: 1
    • Steam: 4

Yes, Steam is on the list, but I only touched Steam games after fully clearing my card with non-Steam games.

I started out intending to play mostly Indie Pass games, but then I pivoted to the Humble App after finding out that it has several exclusives that are in danger of going away for good.

Playing through 34 games in 31 days was quite the grueling pace. I certainly didn't finish all of them, and I specifically prioritized shorter games to make it happen.

I plan to post my thoughts on Indie Pass separately at some point soon, but the general feeling I got was that most of the games on the Humble App were a cut above the ones available on Indie Pass. In fact, there were several other games I tried on Indie Pass that didn't make it on my list simply because they had issues (e.g. messed up controls, wouldn't launch, etc.). That's pretty rough for a brand new platform trying to position itself as a curated set of worthwhile titles.

While there is some good stuff on there, the short of it is that, at present, I can't really recommend Indie Pass as a platform.

What I can recommend, provided you're a Humble Choice subscriber, is snagging the Humble App and playing what looks interesting to you before it goes away for good.

I do think forcing myself to play non-Steam stuff was healthy for me. It made me dive back into libraries that needed some dusting off, and it helped break the hold that Steam's achievements and playtime tracking have on me.

A good example would be Interactivity: The Interactive Experience. I played it on itch, where there were no achievements, but at a few points I had to duck out to a guide which was focused on the Steam version for which there were achievements.

I know that, had I played it on Steam, I would have been more focused on making sure I got all the achievements rather than just playing through the game as is. It honestly felt kind of nice to not have to worry about those checkboxes and just play the experience for its own sake.

    Highlights

Of the 34 games that I played, these are the ones that most stand out to me (in alphabetical order).

What's odd is that I didn't feel like I played a single Slam Dunk, Thoroughly Awesome, Must Recommend game. Instead, I played a lot of games that were definitely flawed, but made up for that by being unique or interesting or well executed.

I hate limiting games to numbers, but in the interest of communicating the vibes right, the following all feel like really solid 8/10s.

    • co-open (Humble App, though it's also available on itch.io)

A delightful cozy game about being an unsupervised kid at a supermarket. Captures the childlike fun of exploration really well.

Dread-based horror rather than jumpscare-horror. Novel idea with really strong execution.

This was a fun little throwback. Repetitive, but quite charming. Feels like a Dreamcast game (glowing endorsement).

I was a little lukewarm on this in my initial writeup, but the longer I play it the more I like it. A solid bullet heaven with some subtle, thoughtful design touches that make it stand out from others in the genre.

A neat, novel idea (control your character using every key on your keyboard) skillfully executed. Lots of fun.

The Humble App version I played was a limited, early preview build, but the idea of playing OG Resident Evil as a roguelike with modern controls is really appealing. I'll be keeping an eye out for the release of this one.

A weird, surreal VN. I didn't necessarily love the story, but its vibes are unmatched. Very skillfully made.

If you've ever wanted Sonic Adventure 3, download this and play it. A truly impressive fan game.

Again, similar to Roman Sands, I didn't necessarily love the story, but its vibes are also unmatched (in a completely different way). A love letter to the 90s internet.

Another Dreamcast-but-not-actually-on-the-Dreamcast game (rave review). Love that it's open source and still supported after so long.

A short, cute, thoughtfully made puzzle platformer. Feels like a GBA game (high praise).

I did actually consider swooping in for a completion in the last few days of the month, but alas I ended up legitimately not having the time. The month being busy as a whole was the original reason I went mellow, so not surprising, and there is a sense of pride at obstinately not winning.

That being said, I had a wonderful time this month. I'll be continuing to work my way through two games (Wolfenstein and Strange Horticulture), and had singular experiences in the two games I finished (Nex Machina and Beyond Blue). More importantly, I challenged myself to write something each week that I'd feel proud of sharing. And each week was a firm reminder that writing is really hard! But I'm happy with what I accomplished, even if I wish I had time for another draft or two on each post!

As always I love reading everyone's game discussion and updates. I wish I could have been more involved in the discussion, but alas, time is short (and writing is hard).

Thanks to @kfwyre for running the event and to @wes for the bingo site which seamlessly doubles as a writing prompt generator! And thanks to both for all the great comments.

I can't wait to see what's in store for November!

Writing is definitely hard, and I'm still figuring it out after numerous events. Sometimes the words flow, and other times I struggle to say anything meaningful at all. But I do like how taking notes, and trying to formulate them into a grander opinion, does often focus my consideration of the game I'm playing.

Granted, sometimes I just want to enjoy a thing without a critical view. Just as I don't always want to write a report after reading a book! But sharing those thoughts with others, and seeing if they have their own opinions to contrast, can bring a lot of unique value too.

I do subscribe to the idea that writing is the process of thinking deeply about something. When I was a lot younger words flowed much more easily (though I was also probably less worried about what they were saying). A decade of writing code instead of prose atrophied those skills, but fortunately there are chances like the backlog burner to rekindle that old writing spirit!

I'll say that even if writing is hard for everyone, you and many of the other posters here make it seem so effortless, something I aspire to!

Well, that was my very short-lived Backlog Burner run. I played two games in total and managed to beat one of them.

Due to concerns about fatigue and eye strain affecting my health, I had to step away from the event early. I explained previously how I was feeling and the steps I took to address it.

The good news is that I'm doing much better now. My tiredness has decreased significantly, and I'm regularly getting at least six hours of sleep in a row again. At this point, I can handle a few hours of gaming, as long as I don't fall too deep into web browsing, which is easier said than done, especially during the insufferably long Canadian winters.

I'm planning a month-long trip to Japan starting November 10, so I may not have much time for that month's Backlog Burner event. However, I'll very likely be back for May 2027.

    See you next time!
