If your morning routine were the subject of a montage in a movie, what would be the song that played over the top of it?

Inspired by a random chat I had at work last week, I'm curious to know what Tildes makes of this (admittedly slightly daft) hypothetical!

Nine Inch Nails - Just Like You Imagined

I think it captures well how it feels to wake up around 4 AM to comfort toddler waking from nightmare, toss and turn till 6:30 AM when both kids wake, then deal with the morning chaos of the children screaming at each other, while trying to get the one child to school and the other to stop waving their genitals at traffic and put on pants.

Ahh that's a lovely choice! I kind of rediscover this tune every few years, and I enjoy it every time.

Like a lot of films the more time passes the more it gets out of step with modern values, but I’d still recommend giving it a watch. If you do I hope you enjoy it!

Great choice--exactly how I feel in the morning. I still get stuff done, but damn, I just want to be as slow as that song.

Just to add some annoyingly cheerful morning vibes - if I'm in a good mood and want to pep myself up in the shower:

If I'm feeling distinctly less awesome, then this is my anthem:

Hahahaha! If something's terribly wrong then it's usually the 10 hour version of heyeyeayea, with extra emphasis on the "just keep it inside, and learn how to hiiiide, your feeeeelings" chorus!

Given how often I've usually been up the entire night, so my "morning" routine is actually my "about to go to bed" routine, Good Morning from Singin' in the Rain seems appropriate. ;)

My pick is Amado Mio by Pink Martini, for no good reason that I can particularly articulate. I'm not pining for a love or anything, the tune just gives me "good morning" vibes :D

When I was working a factory job: Bleach - Wipe it Away because honestly, fuck work.

When I think I'm going to need to leave the house and I'm having a good day: Dog Faced Hermans - Mary Houdini because I need some chaos energy to get out of bed, navigate getting ready to go out, and then get out. And sing-shouting (in my head, not out loud) "My name is Mary Houdini - I AM AN ESCAPOLOGIST" is fun).

When I think I'm going to need to leave the house and I'm having a bad day: Ella Fitzgerald - Here in my arms because chaos energy is bad news when I'm in this mood and I need gentle calming vibes and Ella Fitzgerald makes it sound so effortless but she's so incredibly skilled. This is just amazing.

I initially tried to be clever in searching for a song about going back to bed or wishing I was still sleeping or something, but I realized how uninteresting my morning routine is and how a montage of it would have to be awfully short to be worth watching. Then I remembered Bob Drake's Medallion Animal Carpet, an album with lots of very short songs, and found a perfect one to describe my attitude about being taken away from sleep and sum up how interesting the related routine is: "Crude Internal Organ."

Listen to it at 1:52 of part 1 here: https://bdstudio.bandcamp.com/album/medallion-animal-carpet or just a preview of the short track here: https://music.apple.com/gh/song/crude-internal-organ/59628494.

The instrumental parts are perfect for the way I move first thing in the morning, and the lyrics are pretty close to my mental state! I also like the way it segues into "Detrimental Robot," though I'm not sure what that means.

Thanks for asking; I'm glad I took the time to think about this fun hypothetical (and remember an album I've neglected for a while)!

Edit: Actually, I should've thought've The Shunned Country first, since that is the album of super short songs. It's pretty great, too, if you like Bob Drake's weirdness. Too bad Spotify is missing so many albums like this one, 'cause it makes me forget them.

It sounds like your mornings are pretty unsettling, not going to lie! I very much enjoyed the intro to Detrimental Robot though, that was cool (and also fitting for a montage IMO!).

The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars is probably a good baseline of mood. Worst Day since Yesterday when the depression hits.

Starts off nice and cheerful then ever so slightly gets more chaotic as I race to get ready and get out the door.
Its use on Russian Doll gives it a “Groundhog Day” feel for the morning routine, too.
