I feel like I saw this concept on another car like 10 years ago, though I can't find where it was.

I saw a fully functioning prototype on television 20 years ago or more. It looked like a regular car. As someone terrible at parallel parking, I don't forget this kind of stuff.

Was this the car?. I remember a concept that used 6 small wheels to get into a parking slot, but I couldn't find it in this Wikipedia article.

Any one who has parked on a packed Seoul street knows, there's a good reason to build this. I consider myself a pretty competent parallel parker but Seoul can get wild. Something like this...

Something like this would've been a game changer - granted the old Ssangyong probably contributed to how cramped the roadways felt but I can see the markets for something like this.

It's not an act of aggression, it's an act of cooperation, to let one more car squeeze in to share a scarce resource.

Pretty sure something like this gets announced every ten years and always turns out to be a big old nothing burger.

Yeah, there's a lot of practical issues. You're adding so much mechanical complexity, and so many more points of failure, to a critical part of the car - the wheels - all so that parallel parking is easier. It's not a worthwhile tradeoff. The article does note that EVs have it easier - this concept car has a motor for each wheel.

"Crab walking car" aka 4 wheel steering is like 3D television. It comes. It goes. It'll be back in another 10 years again.

This is cool, lots of things that having four independent wheels opens up, like tighter turning radiuses and even emergency braking by pivoting both wheels inward. But to be honest, I was hoping...

But to be honest, I was hoping for something more like this

Cool, but does it come with an immobilizer?

What a letdown, I was hoping it actually picked up it's wheels and walked sideways using hydraulics or something. I feel like I saw a pickup truck being advertised that could do this same thing...

I feel like I saw a pickup truck being advertised that could do this same thing like 5 or so years ago? Unfortunately, I don't seem to know the right keywords to find it. :(

Pretty sure we already have cars that can parallel park themselves without needing a whole new rear wheel setup.

I used to work in a very crowded area of a city and would watch folks who rarely drove try to parallel park their rent-by-the-hour SmartCars into spaces big enough for two cars. At least a couple of times a day one would give up and drive away. This is a use it or lose it type skill as far as I can tell, I t’s also a bit different on each model of car. When I first moved here I spent a lot of time researching how to parallel park on the left side, something I’d never even considered before - it’s not the wrong side of the street on a one way street. Then I got a manual transmission and basically started over from scratch.

There are a lot of things I think it’s stupid to automate. This isn’t one of them.
