I've been told things even out in season 2, but one of the reasons I couldn't get into Parks and Rec was the embarrassment humor (similar to the Office). I feel like The Good Place's humor has a different quality somehow, although I'm not sure how I'd describe it. The clever integration of philosophy concepts doesn't hurt.
Personally, S2 and everything onwards for Parks and Rec feels like a totally different show. It was originally gonna be a spinoff of the Office, so that's where the cringe part comes in. S1 was...
Personally, S2 and everything onwards for Parks and Rec feels like a totally different show. It was originally gonna be a spinoff of the Office, so that's where the cringe part comes in. S1 was sort of stuck in between that Office spinoff/new show area, so the show wasn't really able to find itself until S2 where it embraced its own identity.
It may not have the exact same tone as the Good Place, but it definitely gets close.

Started watching this recently. Currently a little ways into season 2. I was really surprised at the quality of a show coming out of syfy channel and even more surprised when I learned it was being canceled. Syfy can't have too many things going for it right now. I wonder why they would give up their flagship show.
I heard that it was called "The Expense" by some people at SyFy. Who knows if that is true or not, but the fact it's a possibility means money was probably a factor. Sigh...

Breaking Bad is still on TV, it's just called 'Better Call Saul' now. It's also threatening to become better than its parent series... and from a straight drama perspective, I'd say it's been better for a long time. It is a bit lighter on the action, though judging by the way S3 ended, I think that's about to change. Vince is promising 2-3 more seasons for this story.

I have to recommend: Happy!
I've watched the first season twice and I'm still not sure what the hell I'm watching. I do know it's hands-down the best christmas story ever told. It shouldn't even be possible to invent madness this good. Short first season, 8 episodes total. Apparently we'll be getting two more and then the story is done. The less you know going into it the better - words simply can't do it justice. It does have a richly deserved MA rating. It'll probably have you hooked within the first three minutes.
I'll also recommend: Taboo
This is a revolutionary-war era BBC TV drama. It's fantastically plotted, has a solid A-list cast, and plenty of action. First season's a year old, 8 full one-hour episodes. There are two more coming. Why care? Tom Hardy. He's not just the lead, he's the writer, this is his baby through and through.
I expect everyone's seen it by now, but: True Detective S1
The only reason it didn't sweep the awards that year is because it was going up against Breaking Bad's series finale. Absolute excellence start to finish.
Wow, I hadn't heard about Happy! (Taboo is in my list but haven't come around to watch it yet). I just watched two episodes and I really liked it. Thanks for the recommendation!

HAPPY! is a show that's one season in that I can't even begin to describe. It's like a live action Adult Swim cartoon with a hard R rating. Based on a short comic of the same name, it is absolute madness in all the best ways. I'm afraid it fell under the radar. I'd not heard of it until a friend told me to check it out after season one ended. Definitely check it out while you still can, since SyFy is obviously not in the business of keeping good shows alive these days.

In one sense I am happy The History Channel is making content like this, rather than Ancient Aliens or some such thing. But on the other hand it is clear that much of the minutiae present is not 'historical' even though the overarching narratives are.
I wish there was some effort to explain what is and isn't fictional. I used to watch a French cartoon called 'The mysterious cities of gold' which included a little 5 minute documentary that explained the real historical discoveries that had inspired the events depicted in the show. I feel like something similar could be worthwhile here, although I guess the history is only a Wikipedia search away...

Killing Eve (BBC America): Great characters and engaging story, with humorous touches. It's the story of an crazy and kinda charming killer, who is one of the main characters, and the MI5 agent trying to find out what is going on. You should give it a try, definitely.
James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction (AMC): Very interesting for any fan of sci-fi, with interviews and participations of actors, authors, engineers and critics. Really liking it.
Vida (Starz!): Not completely sold on this one yet, but I think it's interesting. Revolving around a family of Mexican-Americans that come back together when the mother dies (some Six Feet Under feels). I'd like to see where it goes.
Also loving Westworld, The Handmaid's Tale, Legion and The Expanse. And still following a few others like The Good Fight, Colony, FTWD or Billions. But yeah, I'm very much into sci-fi as you can see. Hope we get a ~scifi soonish.

I’m always watching The West Wing, which is a series about a fictional US president and his administration. I’ve watched the entire series 3 or 4 times now, and I also like to go back and just watch single episodes or a few in a row. It’s, in my opinion, one of the most underrated TV shows (at least today - apparently it was pretty big back when it was airing in 1999-2006). A lot of fans really hate seasons 5-7 which were after the creator (Aaron Sorkin) left the show, but I don’t find them too terrible. The Sorkin seasons are definitely better though.
Huh, I didn't know the last seasons Sorkin wasn't there. I actually stopped watching somewhere during the S05. Not sure why I quit though, can't remember. Definitely a very good show. Although I...

Definitely a very good show. Although I think Sorkin goes a bit too far with his fast and sometimes sanctimonious dialogues and references, but still...
I'm watching Billions now, and it has a similar vibe, but I think the characters are more interesting.

Gotta agree, The Good Place is subverting expectations by being completely unconcerned with location and concentrating on relationships between the characters and the sheer quality of writing and acting is making it something very special.

It's not very new, but The Expanse is good if you're into scifi. (The first 2 seasons are on Amazon Prime.)
Yeah, too bad it's been cancelled. It was my favorite scifi show on right now. :(
Season 3 will be the last unless someone else picks them up.
I'm still crossing my fingers... but I know not to get my hopes up too much.
Jeff Bezos to the rescue!
Hooray!
... And Amazon's evil empire continues to increase its takeover of my life, haha.
Sigh...
I need to give it another shot. I almost finished the first book and that’s renewed my interest.
I find I want a Pinkman spinoff now, in the vein of Northern Exposure.
When does the new season come out? It feels like I've been waiting forever
This summer, sometime - I think in August.
The jury is out on season 2, though.
Everyone keeps telling me this but I've yet to make it through the first episode after three attempts. Does it really get going because I may just have to force myself to get through it.
Depends on what you're looking for. It's a slow dramatic build for a decent part of S1. Don't let the 'Western' trappings fool you for one second though, because Westworld is just one long Black Mirror episode that takes a little while to get going.
I had to give it seven episodes, which is a lot of time invested. But the last three episodes of season 1 are phenomenal. Season 2 has yet to hook me back in though, haven't even made it through the second episode yet.
I'm with you on this one: the end of season 1 is a thing of beauty. I'm on the fence on the first part of the season: it's kinda meh in itself, but it's also "building up" to the last 3 episodes and I feel like those wouldn't have had the same impact without that first part. In the end, i think the trade is worth it.
Season 2 so far suffers the same fate: the first 3 are kinda meh, the 4th is amazing but it's even better because the first 3 are all over the place imho.
I really love Alias Grace. It's a CBC mini-series based on the book by Margaret Atwood about a woman in prison for murder. A psychiatrist is hired to interview her and provide his professional opinion on whether she should be pardoned and released. She begins to tell him her life story and he tries to tease apart truth and lies.
That sounds really interesting, I'm loving the Handmaid's Tale so I'll give this a watch too. Thanks for the reccomendation.
You're welcome! I really liked season one of Handmaid's Tale as well but haven't caught any of the second season yet. It's definitely on my list to watch.
I loved this show, and have been trying to convince everyone I know to watch it!
Well it's not particuarly new at all, but Peep Show has just about kept me sane over the last few months, so probably that.
They ate mummy!
So many fantastic lines.
I'm rewatching Person of Interest right now, currently in the middle of season 3. Even on a rewatch I find myself continuously baffled by how absurdly good this show is. It's not just better than its premise makes it seem—it's not even on the same planet as its premise. It's in a whole different television universe.
Ugh I can't wait to watch more. Thank goodness for Netflix.
POI is one of my all time favorites, so well written over the course of the series.
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a very good comedy that is pretty unique in character and setting. It's about to come back for season 4 so now is a great time to get into it and have lots to binge on.
Man I loved the first season, but they kinda lost me by the end of the second, and the third I could barely start.
I can see that - the show does change a fair bit from the first to second season and I've had similar fall-offs with shows in the past.
Oh I like that one. I’ll keep my eyes out for the new season
I have to recommend: Happy!
I've watched the first season twice and I'm still not sure what the hell I'm watching. I do know it's hands-down the best christmas story ever told. What? You don't like Storage Wars?!
The last things I have enjoyed on Netflix are Manhunt: Unabomber and 3%. Both well worth a watch.

Although I think Sorkin goes a bit too far with his fast and sometimes sanctimonious dialogues and references, but still...
I'm watching Billions now, and it has a similar vibe, but I think the characters are more interesting.
The Rain on Netflix. Danish post-apocalyptic sci-fi, reminiscent of 48 Days Later but with some interesting twists and character development. It's refreshing to see this familiar scenario play out in a different setting (Denmark and Sweden) than the usual US/UK landscapes.
