Epic has nice stuff for free all the time. A Short Hike, Ape Out... and I still occasionally stab people in Mordhau. Such a good game.
I have a weekly reminder to get the epic games, every thursday evening. Takes just a minute and I'm sure.. one day... I will play a video game again.
The only reason I have Epic is the free games. I have never bought anything on there, I just claim all the free games.
Guacamelee 1 & 2 are currently free on Epic. Can be played without the Epic launcher running. Fun games worth downloading.
I grabbed Disco Elysium from Steam, along with a game called The Cave. It's a puzzle platformer where you can choose from multiple characters who have their own storylines and personal puzzle sections. I played it once before on the Wii U, it's a fun game and got some laughs out of me.
I loved The Cave! It had some really charming stories and some good replayability, since each character has a story and you can only choose 2 per playthrough.
It's actually 3 per playthrough. I only played once so far and chose the Time Traveler, the Twins and the Adventurer. It was definitely fun! Only reason I didn't play it again was because I needed a cool down period before going through it again, and well, the Wii U kinda sucks.
I plan to play it with some friends watching and giving input. I got the bad ending for all of them since I didn't explore enough, so at least this time I know what to look for to prevent that!
Right! It's been a few years. I loved the time traveller. I also liked that each character had a different mechanic that made the teamwork interesting.
Oxygen Not Included is always a bargain when on sale. Such a great game.
By the way, does anyone know of any good sites or methods to check for free games? Not just limited-time promotions, but free in general. I mainly use Steam, and checking the free section is painful since most of the top games there are free to play with microtransactions. I checked one of the deal-tracking sites, but when I sorted the price to show free games the list was pretty limited.
Quick edit: want to emphasize, I want a source that lists/tracks permanently free games on Steam. There's resources for temporary promotions, but trying to find permanently free games is tricky. And made worse by Steam pushing multiplayer free-to-play games, so trying to filter through free games on Steam itself is cumbersome. There's a lot of smaller indie titles on there that get buried way too easily.
https://freetokeep.gg/ gotcha fam
Not exactly what I meant (a site listing permanently free games, not just current free giveaways), but that site looks great! That's the least cumbersome free game site I've seen. Thanks, adding it to my bookmarks!
If they had a newsletter that would be amazing, but big thanks for bringing this up.
Checking this site i saw NeverWinter Nights free on Amazon Prime!
isthereanydeal.com is pretty good for the lowest price. /r/gamedealsfree was helpful with free, but we'll probably need to find something new.
I like gg.deals as well. Will usually list any free-to-claim games as the first thing in the "Best Deals" section
I know you're talking about PC/Steam, but worth mentioning for anybody on Xbox that there is a store category specifically for free games (which includes F2P but also a bunch of games like Crackdown 1 and 2 which are permanently free).
A Discord server I'm on (private and very local) uses a bot called FreeStuff, which pings me whenever there's a game given away. Seems to work pretty well. I'm sure the bot can be used by anyone, but I'm not that good on Discord so I couldn't say for certain.
I created a Discord server just to put the FreeStuff bot so I can use it for myself.
i just did the same thing so i wont miss /r/freegames so much. does the bot post automatically or only when you run the command?
It posts automatically
Thanks, but I'm not just looking for temporary promotions, but games that are permanently free. There are a lot of resources that track current free game giveaways, but it's hard to find a good way to view and sort through all free games on Steam. There's a lot of small indie titles on there that get buried under all the massive free-to-play multiplayer games.
This might be a stupid question, but can't you just look through all Steam games with the "Free To Play" tag? Is it more of a sorting issue?
Sorting issue. It likes to focus on the MMOs and games with microtransactions, and even excluding the "free to play" tag (which is the one that usually means microtransactions) doesn't seem to work properly since some games still showed up with that tag.
For those who have amazon prime and GOG, Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition is free to redeem until 19 July

Free game: https://www.gog.com/en/game/eschalon_book_ii
The Yakuza series (0-6) just got added to GOG and it's available for 70% off, which is pretty nuts. Insane amount of content there for the price. 0 is one of my favourite games of all time.
Prey is free to redeem on Gog for those who have Amazon prime

I've gotten a lot of use out of r/steamdeals, but who knows hiw that's going to go with reddit falling apart.
Katamari Damacy REROLL is pretty darn cheap (€5, dunno what they're charging in other currencies) over on GameBillet. I've yet to play it but I kinda think it's worth it for the music and the bonkers vibes alone.
The only argument I would make against getting Disco Elysium is the whole thing that's happened around who owns it now, it's apparently a big long complicated ordeal that may not have any clear good guys or bad guys, but it sounds like the developers got forced out and somebody else bought it from underneath them (I really don't understand the specifics).
Otherwise, it's an excellent game that is just so completely different from anything else I've played, just a very different take on the CRPG genre.
Steam summer sale - Black Mesa Definitive Edition off 75%
I can't buy new games. I already have too much!
But I would, my wishlist has 40 pieces on it... No, no games!
Even just the freebies gog.com and Epic are giving away regularly, filtered down to the games that I've always wanted to try, are more than I have gaming time nowadays. 🥲
I don't turn down freebie on GOG or Steam!
I don't use Epic. You see, I use Linux as my desktop OS and Epic doesn't support it and I don't want to spend my time running some open source thing to login to Epic. I'm happy enough with my Steam account while also having many games on GOG as a backup if Steam went completely out of bussiness.
And yes - I have installers from GOG backed up on my harddrives, one nice Linux script does that for me :-)
Have you tried Hero Laucher? It's pretty good.
I know about it. But since I don't have Epic (and I don't really support the "we give away soooo much AAA titles scheme" - I mean free games are fine, but how are we paying fo them if not by money?), I don't really have a use for it.
I useLutris for GOG games.
I second Heroic Games Launcher. It is like magic. On Linux (I use it on the Deck), it's the easiest way I've found to set up Epic (and GOG) games. There are fantastic projects like Lutris, and Lutris has its place, but Heroic is dead simple to use, and doesn't even require Epic's launcher to be installed.
(Moved my comment under @Pavouk106.)
