I'm really loving the new visual style here. The little animations and visual touches are really refreshing after so long in the NSMB visual style. Also, elephant Mario? Yes, please.

It’s definitely an improvement but it feels like it’s still a part of that series (even uses the same font). Also not sure how I feel about the “Great!”s On every move. I mean I’m still gonna play the game cause I’m a sucker for 2D Mario and the wonder of it all looks like a lot of fun (we always knew Mario was trippin on shrooms, and this is that but to 11) but I’m not sold on the design just yet.

I think what they meant was "It's great when Peach is playable, but it doesn't happen very often". SMB2 USA and 3D World are the only mainline titles she's playable iirc.

And now, with a 2D Mario game coming out so soon, that doesn't leave much besides a 3D Mario game for a potential launch.

Ehh there's been leaks about a Switch Pro since the day the Switch was released. People keep expecting Nintendo to care about hardware and they really just don't.

I doubt we're going to be playing the Switch in 2030. Regardless, they've shown the normal amount of hardware interest for a given console generation, with a lite model and a better screen + better kickstand revision. However you slice it, new hardware is around the corner. If we don't hear about it this winter, I bet we will next summer.

That power difference doesn't matter much to Nintendo though. They aren't making games that require the latest in shader technology. Nor are they creating high detail 4k textures. Sure, many recent AAA console games have had to drop Switch support, but they were unlikely to sell well on Switch anyway. So you have to really ask whether Nintendo has felt unable to bring their vision to life with the current Switch hardware and TOTK shows they really haven't had to compromise yet. While AAA third party support lags, indie support on Switch is doing great.
I don't see Nintendo trying to break in another console right now, especially with a global recession. They struggled immensely replacing the Wii with the WiiU. The Switch is in that same sort of position right now.

That's the real hot take.... TotK is the first (main) Zelda game i will not finish.... I didn't enjoy BotW either, but i B-lined it to the end after not having fun. I miss tight dungeons, puzzles and amazing boss fights.
Weapons breaking... I have a good sword... small little goblins attacking me omw... if i attack them... i don't get XP, ruppees are useless, in exchange i'll get a stick or rusty sword... logically i should just run from these guys or toggle swords... this was so annoying.
Blood moon... Just killed everyone... im out of weapons, low on health, time to explore and nevermind, do it again.
oh lets swim across the river and climb that little hill... nm, i was 1 foot to short on stamina, fell down and drown.
the cooking an inventory management i found tedious too.
For the record i've beat Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Darksouls 1-3, most of the elder scrolls series and have been a DM for decades. But i loved the simplicity of Zelda.
No weight management, only stats is armor/sword level and # of hearts. upgrades are new weapons. Just collect rupees, focus on the fun. Dungeons and bosses are tight. Story? Save the princess, go.
TotK i didn't get very far... its the same game and then they wanted me to build a bridge w/ jenga pieces using chopsticks.... I played with Garys mod forever ago. I dont have a lot of time to game (couple hours a week) i have little kids, i'm going to just play really fun games (currently Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 and replaying parasite Eve II on my Miyoo)

To me I've just seen enough of the same flavour of puzzles in the various Zelda dungeons that I feel like they needed to make a change.
If I find the bow in a dungeon I immediately know how the rest of the puzzles in the dungeon are going to play out. They are mostly just "look for the thing to shoot"; this also translates to the boss of the same dungeon. Just shoot it in the eye.
I do think there isn't really any other games that are that classic Zelda formula which makes it hard if that is what you are looking for.

Surely they must have thought about how the Internet would respond, I wonder if that's the intent?

Mario's been a raccoon, a bee, a cat and a penguin just to name a few. I'm not sure what elephant powers do but I'm damn intrigued.
I've seen a lot of weird porn over on Reddit the past few days, but I don't think elephants were involved. I'm now very curious to know what I wooshed on.

The art style reminds me of Yoshi's Island (Super Mario World 2) mixed with Yoshi's Story, especially the underground rolling section. Glad to see us getting a new 2D Mario and some new Mario physics.

I can’t help but feel like there’s a dash of Sonic in the gameplay and animations. The forward lean, the cartoon leg swirls and so much more felt like I was at times watching Sonic gameplay with a Mario model swapped in.
Maybe I haven’t kept up with side-scrolling Mario and that’s how it is now. Not a bad thing, this looks awesome.
I'm really excited for this one. Finally looks like 2D Mario is going to shake up the mechanics with the wonder seeds. Really looking forward to trying this out on launch.

And since I have an unhealthy addiction relationship with amiibos, I’m also looking forward to the 2 new ones announced.

You mean playable Daisy? Peach has been playable for a long while.
I think what they meant was "It's great when Peach is playable, but it doesn't happen very often". SMB2 USA and 3D World are the only mainline titles she's playable iirc.
Not a huge fan of the modern 2D Mario games, I would have preferred a sequel to Odyssey.

Im in the camp that 3D Mario > 2D Mario... but 2D Zelda > 3D Zelda...
That must be a very lonely camp :)
I’m curious as to why you feel that way about zelda specifically
Link to the Past is one of the greatest games ever. Not a fan of the newer Zeldas.

Hot take for sure. I'm the opposite.
It's not an either/or situation. I'm sure they're working on the next 3D Mario game too.
So? I still would have preferred a 3D over this.
After Bowsette, Peachephant has me concerned for the internet...
The Wonder Seed alternate dimension really gave me Super Mario Bros 2 vibes. I tend to believe they're going a little crazier with this game's story just like SMB2. Maybe Bowser isn't the main antagonist this time?
Just as long as they don't make it another dream this time...

Looks fun! Looking forward to playing this with my niece in a few years.
why a few years? it releases this november! honestly the game looks so fucking cool i wish i had a switch
My niece just turned 1 year old haha. But she loves Mario and dances to the super mario brothers super show songs.
