It's high time we got a game with Zelda as the protagonist. I also really like the tristaff idea. It looks like a much more streamlined version of what they did in ToTK. It didn't work for me in ToTK but this looks more my speed. The idea of summoning monsters to help is also really exciting to me. Will definitely pick this up day 1.

But I think a more puzzle focused adventure is a nice change of pace for the series. I’m honestly hoping the combat will be minimal.

I suspect you'll have a few regular usage items, and then a mix of duplicate function items and weird rarely used ones

Some people proposed just allowing you to pick between Link/Zelda at the start of new games (with varying degrees of character customization) but I vastly prefer this.

Zelda getting her own game, fighting style, story, etc. is cool and long overdue.

I'm excited to see how they merge 2D formula with the recent "innovations" in the Zelda design. Hopefully they find a way to keep the good and cut the bad. Part of why I skipped TotK (the first mainline Zelda I've skipped in my lifetime) was because of the apparent emphasis on sandbox-style gameplay. The "solve problems however you want!" attitude in the trailer is worrisome but at least we won't have to wait long to see what reviewers say.

If you didn't give TotK a shot at all, but you like BotW, I'd strongly suggest giving it another look. I felt like the new mechanics made the sequel fresh while retaining a lot of what was really fun in the first game. To me at least it doesn't feel very sandboxy since it's still restricted by the same game engine limitations as the first game. I completely understand why BotW and TotK are not for everyone, but I think the building mechanics make for some very fun puzzles. Some people are pretty intense with their inventions, but I felt a similar way watching how good people were at fighting guardians and lynels in the first game. I think both games do a good job of letting a player approach the game at their own speed.

I do think the extra domains in the second game, while a touch overwhelming at first, did a good job of reigniting some of the curiosity to explore the world that came with the first game. Theres also a lot more fully voiced cut scenes that are delightful and cinematic. I think it's a really masterful game and I'm still amazed it didn't end up feeling like a cash grab following the success of the first game.

I thought BotW was neat but disappointing and not as good as everyone said. TotK, on the other hand, was awesome.

I absolutely loved BoTW. I bounced of ToTK for a couple reasons:

          • The world had an uncanny valley effect on me. It's the "same" map but I struggled with feeling lost too often. My main gameplay loop in BoTW was finding and accomplishing shrines. They felt less dense and so I was just wandering around and not really running into anything to do.
          • I didn't like weapon durability in BoTW but was able to clear the hump. The weapon modification system exacerbated the problem for me. I ran into situations where not only did I not have a very good weapon but I didn't have resources to make the weapon into something I enjoyed using. I also just don't like how items were glued onto the base weapon... I would have preferred if it made a new weapon with cohesive design.
          • Constructing stuff in this type of game didn't work for me. I felt like I had an incomplete lego set (because I did). There was also that feeling of "why do I have to build a ladder here, just give me a ladder." I also hated steering the glider. I enjoy physics sandboxes but when my goal is something else it feels like BoTW with extra steps. I felt like I spent my time getting joints nice and even rather than admiring the vistas.

I'm glad ToTK exists and that it received such high praise. I'm always down for more Zelda. The 3d Zeldas have never quite been my thing (BoTW being the exception). And then Elden Ring came out several years later which really refined how open worlds work for me. Revising ToTK felt like taking a step back (from Elden Ring) and sideways (from BoTW) that didn't align with my tastes.

This seems fun. It feels like an offshoot of the 2D prototype engine they made while making Breath of the Wild.

I bet that the reason (or at least a reason) they didn't go with that is because people would confuse it with Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

I guess that enough people finally asked for a Zelda game with Zelda as the lead that they decided to roll with it. On the one hand, it’s interesting that the franchise is kind of going into this crafting and building direction in 2D and 3D titles now. A little weird about how Princess Zelda isn’t able to get her hands dirty and summons mobs and furniture to her aid, but if the Zelda games are headed that way in general, and you’re trying to have a comparison between Link the Swordsman and Zelda the Mage, I suppose it would go deeper than close quarters guy and ranged fighter lady.

I like this style too, but this reminds me I need to finish my Links Awakening play through and then start Tears of the Kingdom.

And finish BotW (I got sidequest side tracked and then life hit me like a ton of bricks. )

Oh man you just made me consider a game where you switch between Sheik and Zelda based off the task at hand (combat vs. puzzle). That would be such a cool game!

Now I want a Gannon protagonist game, where you have to use the power of power to save the world from two dictators who have gone mad with courage and wisdom.

I always thought it would be an interesting setup to have a younger Ganondorf that hasn’t fallen to darkness, and actively fights against the curse of Demise. Say the King of Hyrule was on good terms with the Gerudo and no one really wanted this prophecy to unfold this generation so the three of them have to party up, but the villains are trying to drive a wedge between the three of them so there’s some amount of drama and moral choice mechanics, but also party combat and puzzle solving around certain characters.

New, hopefully "traditional" style 2d Zelda?! Sign me up. Don't get me wrong I love BOTW and TOTK, but also like the more dungeon-based and 2d games. Diversity will only help the franchise.

Don't get me wrong, I also agree with sentiment here that LOZ feels most at home in its 2D roots, but I figured Nintendo would continue to cater to its younger audience that have only grown up with 3rd person 3D games. Perhaps they just see room for 2D and 3D offerings, which is even better, cause it just means more LoZ for everyone.

Oh my sweet Jesus YESSSSSSS. I really thought they had given up on us top down fans.. the 3d games just don't do it for me, and likely never will.

All of the top down games could release today, almost as is, and they would be top of the class in most every respect save the small modern quality of life changes here and there. The same just can't be said for the 3d games like OoT. They need proper remakes. Don't get me wrong though, I loved the LA remake, but there are current games which try to mimic the art style of the original. The tight controls in Alttp are better than most games that release today.. the only exceptions are probably LoZ 1 & 2.

So yeh, I'm super stoked by this, and we get on play as Zelda? Oh hell yes.
