Highlights
The following highlights were aggregated from participants. Thank you to those of you who wrote in! I'm sharing these as written, though I did make some minor edits to maintain anonymity.
-
u/Wes made a great bingo site that works really well for this event.
-
It's touching that u/Wes took the time to respond to nearly everyone. He really made this feel like a community.
-
A special mention for @Wes, who seems to have read and thoughtfully replied to every single writeup this month, which was very kind (and I really liked their writeup of Praey for the Gods).
-
I love the evolution of the Bingo card over the past several events, and I really liked this form.
-
There were so many great entries that I enjoyed reading this time around, actually, and I really wanted to keep trying games that other people tried.
-
@SingedFrostLantern for their hole-in-one golf
-
The highlight for the whole event to me was @SingedFrostLantern's hole-in-one and the wonderful writeup that went with the game.
-
My favourite writeup had to be @SingedFrostLantern with their Keylocker Hole in One, a fun little exercise that put me onto a new game that (regrettably) went straight back into the backlog.
-
@JCPhoenix for creating full video reviews for many of his entries
-
@Eidolon's Neverwinter Nights for bringing the classics back
-
@kfwyre for Journey to the Savage Planet, and finally getting to be the dog
-
u/kfwyre completely missing the joke
-
@Evie, with basically every write-up she did. Dead Space, Prey, and Outer Wilds were all very good.
-
@CannibalisticApple with Lost in Blue, finally tackling the game cartridge lost somewhere in a closet
-
@J-Chiptunator with four unique console selections

Three cheers for @kfwyre and @wes!
Great event as always, much enjoyed!
Only 8 bingos? That's it? Nobody else? Nobody at all? ;)
This was another great event. I really enjoy taking part, and I think I have to up my write-up game on the games I'm picking. For the one in May, I might try to stick to 5 games, and actually do a more in-depth write-up like some of the other people here did, though I don't think my game analysis is on the level of some of the other great writers here; I tend to really simplify down to "fun for me" and rate it on only that scale.
I am definitely really liking all the updates that have happened to the bingo cards @Wes. I think all the additions have been great, and the overall look and feel of the card is pretty delightful. Great work!
Some reflection on the games I played:
There are two games from Simon Tatham Puzzles on here. I typically play on Android, usually as a brain palette cleanser. I will almost certainly continue playing the specific puzzles that I hadn't really given a shot, with Pattern being a bit better of the two. I'm thankful for the recommendations that people gave for both of these.
Spiritfarer is a beautiful game. It is kind and sweet and very well animated. I just found out it is also Canadian (as I am) and that the same studio also produced Jotun, which is another game that I liked quite a bit. I also appreciate that you play as a young, brown girl, as did my teenage daughter who recommended the game to me, as she is also a young, brown girl. She was absolutely delighted to have someone she could identify with and play as. I'm not particularly far in the game - two or so hours, but it's one that I'm going to return to and play through.
Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Edition is the game that I probably spent the most time with, and I enjoyed the new content. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes slow, thoughtful games. I did just get an Employee 427 shirt for myself for Christmas, in celebration of this game. I think this is a faithful addition and maybe even improvement to the original The Stanley Parable, so I certainly recommend it.
I have found that my game playing has become a bit unfocused in recent times; by the end of the day, I've usually worked a full day, done parental duties, cooked, cleaned, prepped for the next day, tried to get caught up on news that is pertinent for me for participating in society... and I just want to disconnect. I frequently want to watch a movie or tv show while also playing something that does not require full attention. Cities Skylines (or Civ VI, or something of the sort) or Slay the Spire (or Monster Train or Aces & Adventures or something of the sort) have been frequent choices because I can half focus on TV and half focus on the game, and really go to town on not braining for a while. The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe and Spiritfarer are both games that have broken that cycle a bit; they are more intentional and require a more active participant. I like that I have to bring something to the game to make them worthwhile. I won't give up on playing things like Slay The Spire, but I'm glad to find things to remind myself that gaming can be a whole activity in and of itself.
Uh, I meant nine! Nine bingos! 😂
Oh, I also checked the other bingo cards for Week 4 and 5, and I think that's everyone. I realize that you've got things going on as you mentioned elsewhere in the thread. So thanks for putting together all the summaries, they're also a fantastic part of this event. It's great to get a single-location recap just in case things are missed.
That was very thoughtful of you to check on the rest for me. Thank you!
Sorry I left you out. 😭
It’s probably because we’re effectively the same person, so I saw my name there and just assumed you were accounted for? 🤔😂
Hey everyone!
Thanks for the kind words. It’s a genuine honor getting to help run these events. Every time we do it, I’m amazed at how people dive in and participate wholeheartedly. It’s heartwarming to me!
I loved reading everyone’s writeups. I genuinely adored them. They were thoughtful and interesting. That’s not to say that the writeups are required by any means: this is an event about playing rather than writing, after all.
But what that does mean is that all of the care so many of you put into your writeups was truly above and beyond. The best ones made me feel like I was experiencing the game right alongside you. Even games that I’m not interested in playing personally were still fascinating to read about.
Like @Carrow said, I love the games writing that we have here on Tildes. It’s unlike anywhere else I know of online (and that’s not just the Backlog Burner topics — I love reading the site’s weekly posts too). It’s richly earnest and personal.
Also, I, as always, owe a huge thank you to my co-pilot @Wes, without whom this event would not be what it is. A year ago I had a half-baked, eleventh-hour idea and Wes stepped in with zero hesitation and turned it into something magical.
Personal Recap
Taking off my Captain’s hat and putting on my Passenger one, I’m very happy with how my own Backlog Burner went this time. I really enjoyed doing the new Flow categories, which let me be a bit more free-form with my choices.
Here’s my final Bingo Card:
Wonder✅ Journey to the Savage Planet
Organization✅ Hardspace: Shipbreaker
Duality✅ Mighty Switch Force! Collection
Perspective✅ PictoQuest
Conflict✅ Gearshifters
Symmetry✅ Eigengrau
Progress✅ Mining Mechs
Endurance✅ That Which Gave Chase
Creativity✅ Sticky Business
Empathy✅ Sea of Solitude
Freedom✅ Snow Moto Racing Freedom
Truth✅ Rumu
Restoration✅ Assemble With Care
Fleeting✅ Windward
Causality✅ Hourglass
I did have one more that was in progress for the
Fear
block, but it didn’t click with me nor really fit the category. I was going to finish it anyway, but thenTMI
I got waylaid by Thanksgiving Dinner Food Poisoning, which meant that I had a truly miserable weekend and no capacity to do anything other than repeated Halls of Torment runs because my brain (and the rest of my body) was literally nonfunctional.
I unfortunately missed out on some nice symmetry in my card as a result. I’m still happy about the square though!
Of everything I played, these were my favorites:
A first-person metroidvania is pretty novel, and I liked the game’s bright colors, alien setting, and some of its humor. I paused on this to play other games, so I still have the “metroidvania cleanup” phase waiting for me this month. I loved getting to be the dog!
Deceptively satisfying. A perfect audiobook game. Repetitive and mindless, but many times that’s exactly what I need after a long workday. This is going to get a lot of mileage out of me now that the event is over.
A true hidden gem. A scrolling shooter with not just one, but dozens of novel ideas.
A cute and resonant narrative adventure about a robot vacuum cleaner. This one had some rougher edges, but I ended up loving it despite those. It’s hard not to love Rumu once you start playing.
With thanks to @Wes and @kfwyre, and everyone who poured their energy into writeups this month:
Beauty✅ Call of the Sea
Silence✅ Prey (2017)
Order✅ Paradise Killer
Darkness✅ Dead Space (2023)
Erosion✅ Outer Wilds
Collaboration✅ Holocure
★ Wildcard✅ Card Shark
Freedom✅ A Short Hike
Precision✅ Celeste 64
Survival✅ Tacoma
This event was really good! I think I rekindled my love of writing about games -- my gratitude to everyone who said nice things about my critiques. I think that playing a game with the intention of eventually writing about it has the potential to really improve your experience with it. If you let yourself be open to a game, make use of downtime to analyze what the game is doing, how you're experiencing its mechanics in relation to its themes, where the plot is going, etc etc, it can really be fruitful. This is true of all art of course but as a kind of integrated multimedia games are complex enough that I think it's actually harder to really get everything out of them, easy to fall into a sort of surface-level engagement. For me, the thing I care about most in games is the text -- the writing, dialogue, plot, structure, optional collectibles even -- and all the other components tend to fall by the wayside. But this month by really focusing on this, idk, critical playing? I think I was able to really enjoy games for reasons other than their writing: the music of Outer Wilds, the resource economy of Prey, the puzzles of Call of the Sea.
Incidentally, there were a few games I played in part this month that I maybe didn't finish, maybe didn't have a lot to say about them, but still got them off my backlog: Ghostwire: Tokyo, which was just too bland to continue after four hours. Stray Gods: A Roleplaying Musical and Marvel's Mignight Suns, which both opened with dialogue so rough that I immediately had to turn them off (for different reasons: Stray Gods' dialogue reminded me painfully of the dialogue I used to write back when I was nineteen, and Midnight Suns' reminded me painfully of Joss Whedon). KID A MNESIA Exhibition, the free Radiohead art gallery game, which I finished and was great and something that should probably be felt, not written about (convenient, as I can't write well about music). My third attempt at Death Stranding, which I strongly feel I should love, and which nonetheless stalled at the eight hour mark for some reason.
Right now I'm muddling through Outer Wilds's "Echoes of the Eye" DLC. It's too early really to do a full analysis but so far I will say that I'm a bit bummed out by the scope of this thing, how it's all contained to a single planet (technically not a planet; technically there are two) with only one real mechanic -- but not at all bummed out by the unfolding of a new mystery, a new puzzle, a new spooky supra-natural phenomenon to unravel.
All told I cleared fifteen games off the backlog, a sizeable chunk, which feels great, and now I feel like I need to pivot to books -- The Lathe of Heaven and Babel and Kraken remain yet unread!
Another Backlog successfully Burned. Thanks to all who participated!
As always when ending these events, I feel both a sense of accomplishment, and a little worn out. It does take some mental energy to start something new, and that's probably why it's so easy to put these games in the backlog in the first place. But it feels great to finally make some backlog progress, to find some hidden gems in our own libraries, and to do it as part of a larger community event. I hope everyone has been enjoying playing their games and reading others' write-ups as much as I have.
I was blown away by the number of contributions this time around, and learned about tons of interesting new games through your write-ups. Reading about game histories, your own backstories, and other fun tidbits made it all the more interesting.
As always, a huge thanks to @kfwyre for creating the original Backlog Burner event, and for allowing me to be a part of it. Also fantastic work on the new Flow categories which proved to be a hit!
This time around, I set the goal for playing fewer but longer games. I don't think I quite pulled that off, since I had 3-4 full length titles on the shortlist that never got their start. I did make it through at least two with Praey for the Gods and Another Crab's Treasure, though. I also finished a couple shorter titles like Golf Club Nostalgia and Portal with RTX. So, not bad!
I also put more of a focus on multiplayer than I was expecting. I'm still working through Remnant II and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light with others. And though it's not technically multiplayer, I've been streaming Super Mario Eclipse for friends, so it's become a bit of a shared experience.
My final card is the same as from Week 5(ish), but I'll include it here as a final send-off.

Agreed on being a little worn out due to starting new games. I have plenty of time to game. But starting a brand new one is a commitment.
For me, that's best exemplified by Cyberpunk. I was excited to get it, but I could never get over the hurdle of actually starting it. I knew there was a lot to Cyberpunk, which means a lot to learn. But do I want to spend the time learning a new game? Or rather, do I have the energy and mental bandwidth to do so?
I think it's telling that the games I've put the most time into this year have actually been games I'm continuously playing like Final Fantasy XIV or games I've played in the past and I'm replaying, like the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney games. I even restarted a replay of a JRPG -- Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel -- I played years ago. Even FF7 Rebirth somewhat falls into that category. I'm just relearning or reacclimating to these games.
I think the only new game I've put decent time into this year is Helldivers 2. And that's because I was playing it with friends.
Definitely helpful that we did this Backlog Burner as a community. Because there's no way I would've done this by myself!
I feel this a lot. I also think I overthink it a lot too?
One of the things I like about the Backlog Burner is that it seems to drop the barrier to entry for a lot of games for me. I feel like I hype things up in my head as being big and requiring a lot of inertia to overcome when starting them out, but during BB I just sort of click
Install
and then pressPlay
and it’s… deceptively… easy?I’m not wording this well, but there’s something about this event that lets me cut through accumulated hangups I have about some games (that are a big part of why they’ve stayed unplayed in the first place). One reason I even wanted to do a Backlog Burner event in the first place was to sort of Jedi Mind Trick myself into just, you know, playing games.
This will sound silly, but I don’t really know how to bring that same energy to my game playing outside of the Backlog Burner. For some reason, once the event’s over, the idea of starting new games resumes feeling heavier to me than it really should.
You can add me to the Bingo win list, with my apologies for lateness!
I would like to thank @kfwyre and @wes and to all fellow participants. I'm already looking forward to the next Backlog Burner!

Complexity✅ Gundam Breaker 4
Fragmentation✅ Last Epoch
For better or worse this was not a month for me to explore new games and engage with difficult concepts but more of a time to mentally escape to places where I didn't need to put a lot of conscious thought into things, just execute.
For an idea of how much Mario Maker I played, I cleared 106 levels in November. Many of them only took a couple of minutes each, but several needed upwards of an hour or more.
Last Epoch is currently satisfying my periodic desire to binge an action RPG with 21 hours put into it over the past four days and I might return to it again later with different classes since there are a couple of alternate routes I haven't taken yet.
Thanks for organizing and hosting again, hopefully next time I'll be in a better position to play a broader variety of things.
That’s genuinely impressive. I don’t want to co-opt this or anything, but that’s also 100% in the spirit of Backlog Burner. Instead of different games, though, your backlog was different levels.
Outstanding work!
I hadn't considered it that way but it really does fit the ethos of Team 0% as a whole since the goal is tackling levels no one's beaten yet, so it's a backlog for the entire community that slowly gets whittled down.
I forgot to post this yesterday:
If anyone has suggestions for future Backlog Burner events, please let me know.
I’m open to anything, and I will not be offended or hurt by feedback — even if it’s critical. I want this event to be the best it can be, and I want it to be a product of the community. If you don’t want to share your comments publicly, feel free to PM me.
I’m looking for any and all feedback, but in particular let me know if:
Maybe people can share, for each game they play, how long it was backburnered (days since last play, or purchase); then maybe tally up some stats about that.
I really liked how @JCPhoenix included some stats alongside his submissions. Date released, date purchased, bingo category, and time played. I think I'd have trouble tracking down some of the purchase dates - especially because I've purchased so many games through bundles - but it's a great way of showing all that information at a glance.

Last month’s Backlog Burner had me stumble across a surprisingly varied choice of games, with none of them being unmistakably mediocre or poor. Which is quite the contrast compared to the rather safe and arbitrary selection of my May 2024 bingo card, particularly if you take a look at my what-if bingo card near the end of my reply.
What helped me a lot is having access to many current and past gens consoles, alongside setting my bingo card with Flow categories and having Perplexity to suggest the most appropriate games.
I also selectively checked games with the AI to compare key themes that are directly and indirectly related to what I have on my card.
For example, Perplexity proposed Norse mythology, personal struggle and heroic journey for Jotun: Valhalla Edition. The last theme matches with the Friction category as it brought up navigating challenging environments, defeating powerful mythological beings, and earning respect through skill and perseverance.
The process was a tad trickier than picking whatever game that comes out of my head for each Flux category, but the challenge behind the Flow categories led me to many satisfactory playthroughs. It felt like each title has a clear direction on what they’re trying to accomplish, with mildly varying degree of success.
Looking at how small my amount of played games was, I often found myself wondering why I didn’t further push myself into tackling many more. And in that regard, my event participation was a success.

That's a great idea to use AI to help determine the categories. I was just looking through Steam store pages, and sometimes even googling. At the same time, I wanted to go in somewhat blind to these games. Either way, I spent at least a few hours picking games that way, and I still got some categories and games "wrong." Obviously the point is to play backlog games, period, and the bingo card is merely a guide, so I wasn't too hung up when I realized a game didn't fit a category. Still, I want to do a better job of that next time around.
I really need to lean into using AI/LLM tools more for things.

Thanks @kfwyre and @wes for running this! This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing what everyone was playing.
So I chose 20 of 25 max games to play. There were some categories I got that I couldn't fill. Not because of lack of games in the backlog, rather I didn't have something that fit, or was unsure. Like one of mine was about romhacks. I had to look up what a romhack was. I could've swapped the categories out, but figured I'd be true to Bingo: the card you get is the card you get.
Of those, I played 11 games. Which is actually less than I expected, given how much I game. But thinking about it now, I got halfway through my list. Not bad. But in November, I also picked up 2 more games on Steam that I haven't yet played. It never ends! Either way, it was a solid start on the backlog.
There are some I'm still playing or planning to keep playing:
I guess Cyberpunk is on that list, but I'm just not feeling that kind of game right now.
The surprising one for me was actually Yes Your Grace. In my review I wasn't sure if I'd continue playing it. But I ended up going back to it the day after I posted the review. I played for several more hours. I was a little hooked. I got through the first "phase" of the game and survived by the skin of my teeth. Now I need to see if I can get past this next phase. Like I said in that review, I'm not usually one for "choose your own adventure," but I'm also trying to expand my gaming horizons. Because sometime I'm pleasantly surprised, such as with Yes Your Grace.
Haven't decided if/when I'm going to play the other 9 games I didn't get to. Obviously I intend to play them at some point; I just don't know if I'll continue the Backlog Burner through this month. Maybe I'll just wait til the May event.
Separately, thanks all who took a peak at my little recordings of games. Hope it helped you see what some of these games are. I meant to do at least a couple more, but then I got lazy. Plus talking for 45-60min straight is a bit difficult. For almost all of them, I was doing these late at night, at like 3-4am. My throat would be hurting afterwards. And being dead tired, I'm sure I was repeating myself or making no sense, lol. Maybe I need to shorten them to like 30min max if I'm just giving a taste of a game.
Don’t sell yourself short — your videos were great! As someone who talks for a living, I definitely hear you on it being tiring though. I didn’t realize it was possible for my voice to be exhausted until I started teaching. It took me a while to build up my vocal chops.
It’s also sort of impressive that you got so many items on your card without getting a bingo. Like, at some point, as the card keeps filling up and a win becomes all but inevitable, it’s actually cooler if you don’t win, right?
With the exception of Odysseus and Reverse Collapse, you have a perfect checkerboard pattern, which is geometrically beautiful (but also terrible for winning bingo 😂).
Thank you @kfwyre and @Wes for hosting, and everyone for joining in!
As a first time participant, I appreciated the addition of Flow style and being able to go off vibes; I think I already do enough research during sales looking at bundles, historical lows, gameplay, total hours, hard drive space/hours ratio, if it's on GOG, if I should also install on steam deck, etc etc that while I totally get the hunt of Flux style, I personally prefer the simplicity of "check concept, boot game". I expect I'll be back for more next time, by which I mean I've already cracked under the Steam Autumn Sale and Jingle Jam, but hey, progress is progress yeah? A little busier than expected for the month, but I was able to devote a weekend afternoon to each game to give them their due and having a steam deck certainly helped for completing Keylocker and Rabi-Ribi during my work downtime.

Games Followup
Completed and Liked:
Keylocker: This one does have New Game+, but it's still fresh and I'm thinking of the Virgo replay first, and wow even completed games can be on the backlog again to try other routes.
Touhou Hero of Ice Fairy: The only steam achievement I'm missing is taking 999 damage which I expect I'll gain from attempting to complete full Challenge Pacifist No-Hit (I've gotten it for the first 2 bosses, Clownpiece and Marisa). As for the roguelite/boss rush mode, I'm currently attempting difficulty 4, of 5 I believe. I'm invoking all the additional optional challenges so I'm at 3 starting hp that can't be refilled whatsoever and with flight disabled so I get the fun of relearning the patterns but only being able to dash through them. Admittingly, that's the joy of ascensions, isn't it? To see how far you can go with all the challenges and numbers rising and to keep trying in the face of failure (as long as you trust that the system is balanced).
Actively Continuing:
On the continue list, but I'll get there when I get there (Read:Back to the Backlog)
Rabi-Ribi: Technically I've completed this in the way that one completes Nier:Automata with Ending A or beating the first playthrough of Devil May Cry/Bayonetta; the credits rolled but it's certainly not over at all. It's kinda hard to pull up the motivation to explore since all the potential story stuff is now placed waaaaaay past all the difficulty spike postgame stuff. It's like if I've got the time to trudge through that, I've got the time to try something new that feels more fair and doesn't 3-shot me.
Darksiders Genesis: So after continuing my save on PC, I tried loading it up on steam deck afterwards and the resolution got all weird there, wasn't able to fix it. I mentally thought of this as a steam deck game to play, so it's prioritized below stuff that I could only play at home I guess.
Cavity Busters: Did a few more runs, but I'm still not feeling it. Games generally run on story, style, and gameplay, and this game's style is lots of pixel flesh.
Completed, but below expectations:
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines: The game is very early 2000s PC, rough for a modern audience.
Project Warlock II: Well I'm waiting for Episode 3 since it's still in Early Access and it's a playable game, I just don't vibe with the redesign plan they're going with.
Eternal Threads: Leaving aside the story and whether the timeline format was worth the confusion, there's a distinct lack of payoff to all of it and the setting, little closure to the characters themselves besides a paragraph or two of epilogue text and a cliffhanger ending because of course they have to set up a cliffhanger.
Please, I beat Crypt of the Necrodancer's full story, why is this rhythm game so hard:
I passed this time for a couple reasons -- the most relevant of which is that my friends got into Metaphor ReFantazio and I picked it up so we could talk about it... but then I blew past them and couldn't talk to them about it any more. The funniest part though is my backlog is way longer than last event. I've been buying so many Steam games since I got a deck and have been tricking myself into buying games instead of snack store runs. For several months I had averaged buying a new game per day, no clue if that's still the case. And then I got my buddy to join my steam family and now we've broken 1000 shared titles with a lot of really high quality stuff in there.
I have read what y'all have had to say and wishlisted some games based on it, others rocketed up the backlog. I appreciate what y'all write, I find them much more useful than reviews anywhere else. It's also cool since I get an idea of what a given user does or doesn't like, that added context is also helpful. So thank you @kfwyre for running the event and keeping things so organized, thank you @Wes for creating and improving the site, and thank you to everyone that contributed.
Thanks to @kfwyre and @Wes for putting this on. I had fun going through my backlog and trying the games that I had put off playing.
CrazyProfessor02's Final Bingo Card
You wanted it when you were younger✅ The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
Part of a trilogy✅ Beholder
Focuses on relationships✅ Hades
An updated version (remake, re-release) of an older game✅ Bioshock 2 Remaster
★ Wildcard✅ Party Hard
Has a skill tree✅ Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
From now-defunct dev studio✅ Thief II: the Metal Age
Sadly, I really did not get any other game played this past week, my free time was taken up by MGS V this past week. The surprising games that I did enjoy was Hades and MGS V: The Phantom Pain. The reason that these games were the surprising ones is that they are both from genres of games that I typically find really annoying to play, roguelike and stealth games. Roguelikes because for whatever the reason I simply can not wrap my head around the mechanics, take for example FTL, I really want to enjoy this game, to the point that I had picked it up a couple of times, but I find that I can't find any enjoyment, so I just drop it. As for the stealth games, I really don't have the patience to really stealth it out, like that is required in games like Thief series and for the Dishonor series. But for whatever reason these two really clicked for me. As for my least favorite game(s) would be Thief II: the Metal Age and Party Hard. The reason for Thief II is that there was no tutorial, which makes me wonder if it was meant to be played immediately after finishing the first game, because that one did had a tutorial (minus the fact that I was killed almost immediately by a guard). Party Hard because I had found it to be just meh. I really don't have any other reason to why I didn't enjoy that game. And I really can't explain as to why I found it to be meh.

Good catch! It's now fixed.
