I'm pretty far removed from Disney/Marvel these days, but god damn if I don't love the X-men. That shot of Cyclops at the end just really revs my nerd engine. I'm sure the movie will be full of scenes like that, which, in a vacuum, I would really love.

The problem is, all those cool moments will be wrapped up with audience pandering, flattened themes, and a just kind of... gentrified story. And all of that leaves a bad taste in my mouth that taints the moments I want to love.

I don't want to be a hater. I don't like being a hater. I want to be excited to see my favorite characters on the silver screen. But ultimately, I think this teaser satisfies what I want far more than the actual film ever will. At least when I watch this, my mind can fill in the gaps for what I believe the Avengers and the X-men actually are, not what Disney wants me to believe them to be.

Or maybe I'm just a pompous comic book nerd that can't enjoy things that have been retro-fitted to a wider audience. I can accept that too. But that doesn't remove the melancholy. I wish I could watch these movies without constantly asking myself whether I'm enjoying them or not. I just can't lose myself in them anymore.

That being said I will never be tired of his portrayal of Xavier. Just not moved by the "omg he's back" tactics anymore.

Yeah they used up that ticket with Days of Future Past. Damn, that trailer hit so hard back then though. It was arguably better than the movie.

Unless this is 3-4 hours long I’ve got no idea how you cram in Dr. doom and the entire cast of the x men?

If they follow the Endgame model, half the movie will be a fight scene where 40 characters each get a moment to do something cool and that'll be it.

The next Avengers movie will apparently be based on Secret Wars which lends itself to that format pretty well since the premise is essentially an omnipotent being captures all the Marvel heroes and villains, traps them in a place called "Battleworld" and makes them fight for... reasons.

My assumption is this is basically an opportunity to reboot the MCU: they're putting all these characters in because it's going to be a send off for all of it, and they're probably going to do a hard pivot into doing X-Men films because the Avengers are stale.

BUT THEY SENT THEM OFF ALREADY MULTIPLE TIMES.

Honestly that's what is frustrating I think. The flailing around (seemingly at the whims of the "mob" of "fans" with YT channels complaining about the women and Black people in the MCU ) and an inability to move on. Resurrecting dead heroes is a classic comic strategy but I don't really want to see movies of older and older heroes who were already retired and given endings at this point. Especially when they did all the effort to set up the young avengers and new Cap and such.

But also ultimately I don't care because those choices have numbed me to the whole thing. I canceled Disney+ and probably won't see this in the theater unless something changes.

I'm kind of confused about your point here, the X-Men have something like half a dozen movies establishing these characters. And Thanos barely even qualified as a character before Infinity War, he had a minute or two of screentime in Guardians of the Galaxy and that was pretty much it, but he still ended up being one of the all-time great comic book movie villains.

Honestly though, I think at this point I'm not going to care too much if it's a bit messy. Just the idea of seeing the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men take on Doctor Doom in a 3 hour spectacle excites me. I wish they'd built up to it better but I'm still happy it's happening.

I'm not sure about "not well"- he looks old, which he is. And it does appear that the character is supposed to be somewhat bedraggled. While Ian has had a couple of health scares recently, like falling off a stage, he seems to be otherwise well, and if anybody has likely earned enough to retire and relax, Ian has. Which means that he is likely doing this because he wants to, because he loves acting. And he can definitely still do that.

Honestly that might be my favourite Extras cameo. Although there are so many good ones to choose from. Daniel Radcliffe's and David Bowie's are both also hysterical.

I assume that they will have doom kill all these legacy characters to have a hard reboot next cycle. I’m being optimistic of course.

The MCU cannibalizes the titles of its most popular storylines for name recognition, not to faithful to its legacy. So although there may be some elements that remain (i.e. heroes gathered in a big crossover event), I'm making the prediction that few things from the original Secret Wars and Secret Wars II (when the Beyonder had jerry curls) will remain. There won't be a Battle Planet, there won't be a lineup of Marvel villains (that have mostly been killed off), and there probably won't even be a Beyonder.

Instead, I bet its Dr Doom who is responsible for assembling all the heroes (including bringing in the X-Men from a parallel universe). Most of the fighting action of the first movie will be the heroes fighting each other (the superhero way of dogs sniffing each others butts) to which Doom will win at the end. The second movie is the heroes finally teaming up to take on Doom and win.

    More left field predictions:

    • At least one hero will die, but it won't be those that deserve the send off. Instead, Marvel will squander some guy like Shang-Chi who got just the one movie and then was left out to dry. My bet is on Dr Strange, Feige's favorite, who will no longer be the franchise's anchor character now that Pedro Pascal has arrived.
    • As if the announced lineup isn't enough, there will be even more teases of new characters. My dark horse pick is Squirrel Girl because Marvel knows it needs to really appeal to fans, and her IP is ripe for exploitation.
    • Things are going so bad for comic book movies that I predict the impossible will occur within 5 years: Marvel will do a crossover movie with DC, and it will be with Spider-Man and Bat Man. This movie will have something that points in that direction.
