Spotify Wrapped 2021
Spotify Wrapped seems to be rolling out to users today. I haven't received my slideshow but can see the playlist. I figured a thread for us to talk about our listening habits over the past year would be fun!
I was curious about this year's wrapped as I didn't listen to much new music as other years, and my top songs for this year sort of confirm it. I definitely had more variety last year.

Jesus Christ, I thought soks_n_sandals was impressive at 43,438 minutes listened, but you're almost double that! I considered myself a serious music listener, but y'all are putting me to shame.
And the ironic part is that I never considered myself a serious music listener.
My top song is one I actually posed to Tildes a while back: Eldren's cover of More of the Same.
Clearly I loved Until This Shakes Apart as well, it being released back in January made Five Iron Frenzy my number 2 artist for the year-- something I never thought I'd be saying in 2021.
And for good measure, the top songs and artists from the slideshow they do in the mobile app.
I spent 43,438 minutes listening this year (so far).
I listened to Witchoo by Durand Jones and the Indications 59 times (and got all my friends to love it too)
My top songs were:
My vibe was "happy and chill" which feels on brand for my listening.
I listened to 153 genres with these as the top 5:
I listened to 2,146 artists, but my top artist was Leon Bridges with 1,582 minutes listening. The others are:
Good lord. That's 724 hours, and averages almost 2 hours every day. I don't think even if I added up all my Spotify, YouTube, MP3, and radio listening time for this year it would even come close to that.
p.s. Mind sharing your Wrapped 'Top Songs of 2021' playlist? I'm curious to hear what you spent so much time listening to. I'm already a big fan of Leon Bridges and Lake Street Dive too though. In fact, Good Kisser is the very first song I ever posted to Tildes, on April 26, 2018... the day the site launched. :)
I love listening to music! It's a huge part of my life and is often its own activity in my day.
And I'd be happy to share my playlist! Here's a link
I'll share my other playlists while I'm at it, since the other songs are probably in one of these playlists. I make big, curated playlists as my tastes change year to year and share them with my friends. I would largely be doing it anyway, but always think of a few friends and share music with them as a love language.
My primary tastes went Trap/EDM -> pop -> R&B -> Americana + Soul -> Jazz, and are mostly reflected below.
Much of my Top 100 music is from this playlist: Southern + Soul
This is my new R&B playlist: 4madelyn3
This is my dance and pop playlist (it's mostly stuff that wouldn't be on the radio, but isn't necessarily obscure): 4madelyn2
The jazz in my top 100 mostly came from playlists made by Spotify or the Verve label, but is also some stuff that I came across on my own.
Hmm, I just tried listening to your Wrapped 2021 playlist, but the link merely opens up my own Wrapped 2021 playlist instead. I think you have to click "... > Share > Copy link to playlist", to actually share your own version of the playlist.
Edit: Nevermind, even clicking on other people's links with the
si=
code in them still just opens up my own version of the playlist. Well, that really sucks. Apparently nobody can even share the Wrapped playlist that was generated for them. WTF Spotify! :(No worries! I dumped it into another playlist here, which I manually created.
Sweet, thanks! Is there an easy way to do that, so I can too, or did you have to manually add each song?
p.s. NM, it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. Here's mine:

I know everyone gives the desktop UI a bad wrap but
ctrl+a -> click drag to playlist name
has saved me so much time in the past. Thanks for sharing! I'm keen to give it a listen. Quick edit: I'm seeing some Flobots, Mos Def, S.O.A.D., among other bands that give me the initial impression that I am going to like your spotify wrapped playlist haha
Oh damn, I didn't realize that would work! I will definitely be using that in the future. Thanks again.
p.s. Ditto about your playlist. Lots of familiar names (aforementioned Leon Bridges and Lake Street Dive, but also Black Pumas, Marcus King, .Paak, Curtis Mayfield, Alabama Shakes, etc.), and also enough that I am unfamiliar with to keep it interesting too. :)
I checked mine and it was 76,000 minutes which comes to almost 4 hours per day. I’m actually surprised it’s that low considering I typically work with Spotify playing for almost the whole 8 hours.

My top artists list has mostly remained the same over the years going back to 2016, my first year with Spotify. I've got my comfort bands and I listen to them a lot, I guess. Also I usually default to previous years' top songs playlists when I want to listen to music I'm guaranteed to enjoy, so I feel like that just keeps feeding back into those numbers.
I kind of feel like the stats are a bad representation of my music tastes. Makes me seem like all I listen to is rock and the same artists year after year. But the actual playlists are usually really diverse -- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1EUMDoJuT8yJsl?si=cb7857c280cb4b2e
My top song for the year was Dirty Heads - Lift Me Up which doesn't surprise me, I like to listen to a lot of beach/stoner rock in the summer.
My Spotify Wrapped for 2021:

It feels like this year's wrapped was way more accurate for me than in previous years. Last year I got "Otacore" and "Musical theater" as my top genres, which I never listened to that much. This year's wrapped is a really good summary of the type of music that I like, though of course there's a lot more genres and artists that aren't on here. I find last.fm to be way more accurate for that kind of reporting. I listened to a lot of new genres and artists this year, so it's cool to see that represented. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my Wrapped this year and how it reflects the music I discovered this year. I'm excited to see what new genres and artists I'll find next year.
Top song of the year for me appears to be Sister Marian by T-SQUARE.
In years past, Vulfpeck was heavily featured in my playlist and as my primary artist but they fell to the wayside. I still have quite a bit of Cory Wong in there but I definitely have more variation. Will update my post when the slideshow goes live for me!
I've listened to one of T-SQUARE's songs before but I never explored their other songs until just now. That song is amazing and now I'm binging their entire discography.
Blind Channel – Dark Side (2021)
Finland's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 was my top song! That makes me smile. And I listened to far more 80's music than I ever would have guessed at.
My Spotify Wrapped stats for 2021:
'Live - Selling the Drama' is the song I played the most this year (at 4x)
(But every time I listen to Throwing Copper I play it all the way through, so all the songs on the album are probably 4x too... other than Dam at Otter Creek, which I skip)
I only spent 1,690 minutes listening to music on Spotify (I mostly listen on YouTube these days)
I listened to 19 different genres, Top 5 being: Alternative Rock, Classic Rock, Soul, Pop Rock, Indie Rock
I listened to 278 different artists, Top 5 being: Gavin DeGraw, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Live, Elton John
My music moods this year were "wistful" and "happy"
And here's my Wrapped "Top Songs of 2021" playlist for this year:

(edit: had to manually make a playlist with all the songs, since sharing the autogenerated playlist was impossible)
I made a new account on October 19th -- so my stats are a little borked. I came in with only 6555 minutes (~55.5k if I did a full year.)
I mean, its pretty accurate, but I don't actually listen to as much classical as this suggests. :)
I'm going through mine right now. My top five were all IDLES tracks, which even surprised me. It's good loud background music, though. I'll try to explain where the conclusions came from, too, because it's fun.
With top music moods being "kindness and innovation", 34 genres, and I can probably pinpoint the artists for the top five:
I'm ignoring the podcasts because I only listened to three episodes of one so far, and only one episode when they were accumulating this data, so their data is meaningless.
My top artists:
It came down to a total of 15,049 minutes listened.
There is a minor issue with the reporting, as the app in Windows doesn't like to sync properly, but it seems about right to be honest.
I don't use spotify much but my last.fm account basically has the same information. Don't have listening time yet but should be around 90'000 minutes.
Top songs (definitively shows I listen to albums and not songs...) :
Top artists :
That said these stats usually are biased toward album with short songs.
Apparently I listen to a lot of soundtracks, mainly Once Upon a Time in the West, Blade Runner 2049, and The Godfather. This is Debussy is my number one playlist.
My top song was Once Upon a Time in the West - Main Theme.
My spotify wrapped:
I had 113172 minutes of listen time. I guarantee you this is because my work lets us listen to whatever while we work, so I usually have this running about 8 hours a day + on my commute too.
My Top Songs
Guarantee you that the top two are just because they're in the same album, though in all honesty the top song does slap.

Hell yeah! I honestly forgot all about this song and hadn’t thought of it in years, so thank you for the reminder. It used to be a ton of fun to play in DDR (c.f. this legend). Also that blaring siren sound is still somehow super satisfying instead of annoying (even though it is actually a little annoying, but I disregard that).
I love doing this every year, it's great to think about what I've been listening to.
I listened for 11,230 minutes (60% more than other US listeners) and my Audio Aura was good vibes and wistful lol.
Top played song was Chrome Country by Oneohtrix Point Never at a reasonable 32 times.
Top Songs
Listened to 59 different genres this year, and 625 different artists.

Dessert, I was in the top 0.5% of listeners and spent 175 minutes listening to their music.

Thanks for all the contributions everyone!
I put all the songs I could find from this post in this playlist:
Tildes Wrapped 2021
It is set to be a collaborative playlist so if I missed one, feel free to add it.
Hey, that's awesome! Thanks for making the playlist!
I’m not on Spotify, but here's my DIY Wrapped. My tastes fall squarely in the realm of basic pop. All bops no stops, y'all!

SOPHIE's "Immaterial" taking the top song spot is significant. I was newly into Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides and loved "Immaterial" for its uncompromisingly positive and joyful feel when SOPHIE died unexpectedly. That song's celebration of spirit then became much more resonant, feeling not just like an individual song but a summary statement for SOPHIE's legacy.
Also, the Stardew Valley soundtrack and ConcernedApe hitting number one on my albums and artists respectively comes from the fact that my husband and I always put that on as background music whenever we play the board game together. We played a lot of rounds of the board game this past year. :)
Shoot, I hope I'm not too late!

Since you listen to Rezz, Daft Punk, and deadmau5 a lot, I think I should check out those Five Iron Frenzy tracks :)
Haha, they're definitely an outlier!
Five Iron Frenzy is a (formerly) Christian ska band out of Denver, although their last couple of albums have been a lot more "rock with horns". They're one of my favorite bands!
I added
(formerly)
to the Christian descriptor because several band members have become atheists during a near-decade hiatus. Earlier stuff was more theologically contemplative, but the more recent work has been more political and social commentary. As an exvangelical myself, this tracks pretty well with my life's journey as well.Ohhh I really dig this. I'm a sucker for artists who weave current political events into something catchy (like grandson, and now, Five Iron Frenzy). And I also discovered I like this new genre, thanks!
Absolutely!
