I'm still on the 13 mini (had the 7 before that), and probably won't upgrade for a while. Hopefully I can stretch it until 2027, security updates permitting.

No matter how much of an upgrade 15 will be, the environmental impact of upgrading every few years is prohibitive to me.

I'm glad you're reducing your consumption. I also try to be less wasteful and buy lower end phones (less materials - and cheaper!) and use them for at least a few years. But when you mentioned "the environmental impact of upgrading every few years is prohibitive to me." I was expecting way more than 74 Kg for the biggest iPhone. That's equivalent to 8 gallons of gasoline burned. We should also burn as little gasoline as possible but I don't think even the environmentally conscious would consider putting off burning 8 gallons of gasoline for 7 years to be a great way to save on carbon emissions.

The easiest thing I've found that I can cut is air travel. Driving a hybrid with >1 passengers is more efficient than flying. Or just don't travel at all, or combine trips. I'm able to occasionally visit my family for the duration of Thanksgiving through New Years, which means two fewer long distance flights.

I may need to burn a few gallons a year to get myself where my feet or bike can't take me, but if I don't need it, I don't do it. It's not hard for me not to buy a new phone while my current one works fine. If I end up needing a new one, I will buy one. If I only want a new one, I'm okay with not indulging myself and soothing my conscience in the process.

In the bigger picture, by not buying a new phone every year or two, we disincentivize the launch of a string of new models every single year. If Apple would just wait another year or two for each launch, I'm guessing that would cut out a lot more emissions and environmental damage. (Even better if they go the Fairphone route and aim for upgrading of modules instead of entire phones.)

If we could get their competitors to do the same, well, Bob's your uncle!

I currently have the lowest end iPhone. It’s holding up okay for being 3 years old. Before that I guess I had a Pixel 1, so more mid range.

I can go like two days with this thing. That said, improved battery won’t ever be something I’ll not want haha

To be fair I haven’t had a non plus or max since they came out so my experience isn’t with the normal sized ones

Does it really matter at this point? I haven't worried about battery life in a phone since I got my Galaxy S6, about 6 years ago. All phones I've had since last well over a day with my usage. It really feels like phones have stagnated. Processing power is far more than enough, batteries are great, etc etc.

My husband charges his Pixel (7?) less than daily. I charge my iPhone 13 multiple times per day. We have the same job and have very similar usage habits.

I agree it won’t matter once phones last well over a day. The current iPhone doesn’t come close to that for me, so it does matter for now ;)

My iPhone XR lasts a day, I had no idea there were phones out there that lasted longer, as every phone I’ve ever had has lasted no more than a day with regular usage.

My parents bought me a 14 pro as a congratulations for first job out of college (I'm young, I know). I have a battery pack. Phones in general have less and less selling points, and the only things that would make me consider a new iPhone is USB C charging and sideloading applications - if they both happen for the 15, who knows, might just get myself one. Other than that, slightly better camera and processor along with a litany of small improvements are probably what they're trying to sell, so no thanks.

You can sideload applications right now, you just need to pay $100/yr.

You don't need to pay, but free accounts have to reinstall the apps every week and have a three-app limit. Paying bumps it to once per year, and (iirc) increases the app limit.

Hopefully, this'll be an upgrade year for me with how the 15 is looking. Pro has titanium, so I can get it and not have it weigh significantly more relative to the normal iPhone, this may be the last year the iPhone has real volume buttons, and maybe USB-C although I think that'll be the 16.

The battery is fine on recent iPhones but after a few years of degradation a day can be a little rough. I usually bring a battery pack when I travel (and the battery is quite important).

I had the Essential Phone (throwback) which was titanium & ceramic; it was nice, but not as nice as my iPhone X or 14 Pro.

That's still a rumor and I honestly can't really see it affecting the weight that much. As is, the chassis is probably only a small fraction of the total weight.

Ok, this was bugging the shit out of me before I went to bed so I put together a quick spreadsheet to estimate weight differences. I thought that the slightly larger size and the extra camera would make a big difference but, like you suggested; it might really be more down to the metal than anything else.

The 14 weights 172g, the 14 pro 206g, and my guess at a titanium 14 pro is 185g. Most of the way down to the weight of a non pro model.

EDIT: It should go without saying, but I'm guessing a few values in my spreadsheet but I'd bet its pretty close.

Titanium seems like the obvious choice, I wonder if they will also use it as a reason to raise the price on the pros once again.

I think the obvious choice would be aluminum just like the non-pro iPhone. If they use Titanium then they WILL raise the price due to the extra cost of that material. Apple won't give consumers something extra for nothing.

It depends on your lifestyle/charging habits etc but I legit cannot remember a time where I have run out of battery and not been near a charger. And you know the newer cameras are probably going to add more weight.

Man these rumors have me excited for an iPhone like almost never before. Can't remember being this excited for an iPhone since the 6. I've been using Android phones since 2014 and Samsungs since 2017 and honestly kind of want something different. I tried switching to iOS previously with the 13 Pro but I absolutely hated the notification system, lack of customization options, the uncomfortable square edges and the lightning port. These annoyed me so much I quickly sold the device and moved back to my Note 9. If the rumors about the 15 Pro are true, then they've basically addressed everything I hated previously. I've also been trying out an iPhone 11 as a secondary device to get used to iOS and with iOS 16 and now 17 and while things still annoy me, I've been enjoying it more than I thought I would.
