This is really going to push me out of going to YouTube altogether. It's not worth the full premium sub for me and their ad stock is truly horrible. Especially on children's content. I wouldn't even mind ads generally, but YouTube ads are extremely repetitive and straight up dishonest. And on Children's shows the ads are often, like, 30 minutes of a different show. I assume it's to hook the kids so they'll search for it and ask to watch it later, even though I will not have had a chance to see and vet the content to make sure it's appropriate.

YouTube ads on kids videos are a nightmare. Before premium I would throw something on for the kids and then 15 minutes later there'd be a 30 minute long ad that's basically a sales pitch for something that has no relevance to kids whatsoever. The ad is skippable, but I don't want to give my kids the remote (they will lose it and/or not be able to find their way back to YouTube or w/e app).
And sometimes the ads are just like full-length movies or TV episodes for some reason? And they're not even kid movies. Doesn't make any sense at all. I will say that the YouTube Kids app and a dedicated Kids profile helped a lot, because they have limited advertising. But it's still not perfect at all.
Premium was the only way to escape the hassle of having to pop back into their playroom just to press "OK" every few minutes.

There's a simple solution for you here - just use a better youtube client that skips ads and sponsors. It'll work on any Android-based devices and the install is quite simple. If your TV is not Android-based, you can pick up a cheap Android TV-stick and just plug it into one of the HDMI ports, bypassing the TV's own operating system completely.

Especially anything to do with kids will get really sleezy suggestions really fucking fast. And, as you said, the ads are worse than on "adult" videos.
I rather paid for a Netflix subscription and the local PBS equivalent. Both had decent educational content, both straight-up education and entertainment disguised as such. And when D+ came out, I shelled the cash for that too.
More expensive than a Youtube subscription? Yes. Better quality content? Also yes. On the Netflix admin dashboard I could actually hide specific shows from the kids profile when the watching got a bit too intense. (10th rewatch of the same show got on my nerves =) )

There really should be stronger protections around streaming ads (for kids especially, but also just in general)
I get so mad when companies do stuff like this. Like, let kids just be kids. Politics and social issues can be saved for adulthood, when you're able to vote on policies.

If your kid is watching on a phone or tablet I know there is an app that will automatically skip a YouTube ad the moment the skip button becomes available, at least there is on Android, I don't know anything about iOS. That can thwart those extra long ads. I think you can even set the app to mute your phone when the ad is on as well, but that's a paid feature and I didn't try it. I don't know if there is an equivalent on PC, though on PC you're probably just using an adblocker.

Especially the ones who need it to fall asleep.
It's possible it's not good, and I don't know what all reasons you've read about it before, but for me, I have the TV on when I sleep because I generally get more sleep that way. It helps keep my mind from racing, though I could play anything that has voices or people talking and it would probably accomplish the same thing, so long as it's not too mentally stimulating.
I used to sleep in silence or with a fan on. I don't remember what age it started becoming a problem but it was becoming a problem when I couldn't fall asleep for hours. Even if I did fall asleep, if I woke up in the middle of the night I'd end up being awake for hours before falling back to sleep. Sometimes I didn't even realize it, I'd look at the clock and it would be an hour later I'm still awake thinking about who knows what.
Then it became a big problem when I eventually got a job and had to wake up in the morning, I couldn't just sleep-in longer to recover the lost sleep. I realized when I left the TV on, the voices talking made it harder for me to think, which meant that falling asleep happened more quickly and when I woke up in the middle of the night, I could fall back asleep more quickly.
Generally I don't mind the silence during the day however. I often sit in silence, as I don't really listen to music much. At my last place of work when I shared an office, it actually disturbed people that I would just sit there in silence with no music or anything on. So for me, it's not like being alone with my thoughts or anything that was a problem, it was really to try to get more sleep.

I really don't need or want YouTube Music, and their ads are insufferable, so Lite would have been the go-to for me if the price was right. Looking at £6.99 per month seems too steep for me though just for ad-free so still probably not worth it for me since I don't use YouTube a while lot.
Shame they are axing it, even if it wasn't a good value for me.
I've been a happy subscriber of Youtube Lite - I just want my Youtube without ads, that's it. I don't need anything else. I've already got music through Apple One, I have no need for Youtube Music.

As OmgBoom said, a pihole isn't a practical solution for this particular problem.
However, a Pi-Hole is hilariously easy to set up. From the time I downloaded the image to the time I had it set up as my DNS server was around 15 minutes. This was two years ago. I have not touched it since. They work extremely well, you just subscribe to a list of servers to blacklist.
The only disadvantage (or advantage in my opinion) is that it blocks advertisements that you might actually intend to click on for whatever reason. If you see an ad in an email and want to click through to the website, there's a pretty good chance that the tracker they put in the middle will be blocked. My wife finds this annoying, but I find it to be a feature. The solution is to just go to the vendor's website manually.
I have had exactly one legitimate use case get blocked by the DNS server. For whatever reason, trying to buy tickets at my local cinema routes traffic through a tracker server. The two options to solve this are to whitelist the server (which is like two clicks on the admin page) or just turning off wireless on my phone for a second and bypassing my blocker.
Turning off wireless for moments like this is way less hassle than the ads you have without the pi hole. If I have a problem with a website, I click on the wireless button, refresh the website and...

It (and other DNS-based ad blockers) does work for generic ads on the internet pretty well.
I ran a PiHole for a good 6-7 years before I got fed up how it (or my hardware) just failed and it took me way too long to figure out why everything was so slow.
Now I just use NextDNS (referral link you get 30% off, I'm not sure if I get anything). For the price of a full Raspberry Pi package I can pay 4-5 years of NextDNS. I installed their app on all our mobile devices and use their DNS on my router and ads get blocked whether we're home or not.

This is really going to push me out of going to YouTube altogether. It's not worth the full premium sub for me and their ad stock is truly horrible. Especially on children's content. Fwiw an Amazon Firestick can run Smarttubetv and isn't too sketchy in regards to spying.
Bit of a side note, but avoid using words like "just" when what you're suggesting is even vaguely technical or complicated as it can imply simplicity. It can be quite off-putting to someone when they fumble "simple" advice.
I'm personally in firm agreement with the sentiment that "just" is a four-letter word when it comes to advice.

Helps with language acquisition to have chatter going on around him.
Why do adults have the TV on in the background when they aren't watching it? Either just on a random channel or playing some "comfort" TV show they have already seen at least 4 times.

It doesn’t work on Chrome anymore? Odd, I use Arc (Chromium-based) and haven’t noticed any ads, though I don’t watch much on my computer at the moment.
Fairly certain PiHole doesn’t work for YT ads though since they’re served from the same cname as regular youtube content.
This comes at the same time Chrome declared all my installed ad blocker plugins that targeted YouTube ads as now "contains malware" and disabled them. The enshittification continues! Time to go back to Firefox (or another third party browser not owned by Google).
Switched to Vivaldi a month or two ago and have really enjoyed it. It's based off of chromium...so google contributes a lot (the most) to the open source project but this fork was created by previous founder of Opera and some others I think.
I had the lite subscription as I want the ad free content while supporting those who provide it. I don't care about the extras in the full plan, and it is 12 euro instead of 7 which is not worth it. Guess I will go back to just adblocking.
