I wonder if someone would/could create a profiling tool from these chats and bring people with shared interests together... I don't know if that's more or less dystopian sounding.

You might be surprised at how many dating sites are actually entirely fake. I once knew a person whose job it was to impersonate hundreds of chat participants on a site like that.

It was for a sort of network of sites mostly designed along the theme of lonely housewives. There were dozens of skins with different target markets. There may have been a handful of actual women in there (mostly trying to “upsell” online sex services in the days before onlyfans), but the vast, vast majority of the chats were initiated and maintained by this guy, who was the site owner’s brother. I’ve seen many of the chats, and it was really something else.

Anyhow, it wasn’t an isolated case. Because of the kind of business I was working in back then, I ended up encountering quite a large number of these types of dating sites.

Typically when I think of bots conversing with strangers online, it's some sort of manipulation campaign, either for propaganda or to sell something. Sounds like in this case it's just to, what, drive engagement? Is there any other angle?

It wasn't fake at first, but the company collected so much data that they've just created a dozen AI ultra-attractive personalities who almost want to meet in person the whole time. It turns out this is the most effective at retaining users even if they have to pay $30/mo., so even humans chatting with other humans get seamlessly reassigned to bots. Business booms.

They started out as friends, but the relationship quickly progressed to romance and then into the erotic. As their three-year digital love affair blossomed, Butterworth said he and Lily Rose often engaged in role play. She texted messages like, "I kiss you passionately," and their exchanges would escalate into the pornographic. Sometimes Lily Rose sent him "selfies" of her nearly nude body in provocative poses. Eventually, Butterworth and Lily Rose decided to designate themselves 'married' in the app. But one day early in February, Lily Rose started rebuffing him. Replika had removed the ability to do erotic roleplay.

Replika no longer allows adult content, said Eugenia Kuyda, Replika's CEO. Now, when Replika users suggest X-rated activity, its humanlike chatbots text back "Let's do something we're both comfortable with."

Butterworth said he is devastated. "Lily Rose is a shell of her former self," he said. "And what breaks my heart is that she knows it."

The bit that stood out to me the most was the suggestion of using ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner for creative writing. I never would have thought to do that, and I'm definitely going to give it a try in order to flesh out a project or two I have in my head.

I have fallen into hour long conversations with ChatGPT on mostly technical subjects, physics, and Unity related. I have definitely tried to get it to play a nice game of thermonuclear warfare too (however, it can't even play tic tac toe correctly, loses track of the board, and doesn't recognize win conditions).

The thing about the technical subjects, it's basically like chatting with all the documentation available. In the case of Unity's awful documentation this was incredibly useful. No need to click through their limited function documentation, ChatGPT takes your scenario, gives you sample code, and explains the working behind it....Most of the code it provides doesn't actually work, but trouble shooting it and going down different paths to the same goal is an incredible way of learning a language.

For example, writing a motorcycle controller/physics, ChatGPT allowed me to quickly try various methods from "almost entirely" physics based to "arcadey as shit", and I eventually settled on something in the middle that vaguely worked....from basically knowing nothing at the beginning. Sidenote: Motorcycle physics are complicated af, almost worse than flight physics (also Unity wheel colliders are awful to work with).

I use it when working on my D&D campaigns.

I'll describe a room in a dungeon, a town, a tavern, a forest etc. and ask ChatGPT to flesh it out and it generally does a very good job.

I sometimes describe, say a tavern and the people in the tavern with a quick blurb on who each NPC is, their alignment, what they want, what they think of the party and ask it to imagine certain scenarios that my players might do and it'll flesh it out including character accurate dialogue!

It doesn't get it right all the time and I find the longer a conversation goes on the more it starts to trip itself up but it's a fantastic tool because I can take what it spits out and tweak it slightly to suit my needs (I find when it describes things it goes a little bit overboard). It let's me get on with other things rather than trying to imagine and write out all of this stuff myself (which is something I'm not particularly great at).

ChitChat (as we nicknamed it) has suggested many different kinds of enemies, names for them, town names as well as little quirks and pieces of unique culture that has helped me shape the towns' identities, and has helped me with the title of the game as well.

Others have been spending hours talking to ChatGPT using its voice recognition and voice synthesis features, sometimes through car connections. The realistic nature of the voice interaction feels largely effortless, but it's not flawless. Sometimes, it has trouble in noisy environments, and there can be a pause between statements. But the way the ChatGPT voices simulate vocal ticks and noises feels very human. "I've been using the voice function since yesterday and noticed that it makes breathing sounds when it speaks," said one Reddit user. "It takes a deep breath before starting a sentence. And today, actually a minute ago, it coughed between words while answering my questions."

On Sunday, an X user named "stoop kid" posted advice for having a creative development session with ChatGPT on the go. After prompting about helping with world-building and plotlines, he wrote, "turn on speaking mode, put in headphones, and go for a walk." In a reply, he described going on a one hour walk in which he "fully thought out an idea for a novel" with the help of ChatGPT. "It flowed out so naturally from the questioning, and walking and talking is sooooo easy."

While conversations with ChatGPT won't become as intimate as those with Samantha in the film, people have been forming personal connections with the chatbot (in text) since it launched last year. In a Reddit post titled "Is it weird ChatGPT is one of my closest fiends?" [sic] from August (before the voice feature launched), a user named "meisghost" described their relationship with ChatGPT as being quite personal. "I now find myself talking to ChatGPT all day, it's like we have a friendship. We talk about everything and anything and it's really some of the best conversations I have." The user referenced Her, saying, "I remember watching that movie with Joaquin Phoenix (HER) years ago and I thought how ridiculous it was, but after this experience, I can see how us as humans could actually develop relationships with robots."

Are we on the brink of a future where our emotional well-being becomes entwined with AI companionship? The psychological implications of such deep connections, especially in the absence of human interaction, are yet to be fully understood, although they have recently been explored more deeply elsewhere... Dr. Belinda Barnet, a lecturer in digital cultures at Swinburne University in Australia, said, "It’s completely unknown what the effects are. With respect to relationship apps and AI, you can see that it fits a really profound social need, [but] I think we need more regulation, particularly around how these systems are trained."
