How would Tildes feel about a mascot?
Just an idea. I feel like the charm of certain sites or products is the charm that they have a certain, identifiable anthropomorphic mascot (e.g. the Android Bugdroid, Reddit Snoo). I wanted to know if people here think it could be a good addition to Tildes, or if it seems unnecessary.
Isn't ~ kind of already a mascot? I mean, it's so cute! Just look at it, squiggling around like that. Who does it think it is? Who's a good ~? Yes you are!
Octopus Mascot!!!!
I really do like the octopus idea. It represents the basic structure of Tildes perfectly.
Isn't Github an Octopus?
octocat
So like...maybe it could be an adorable tilde inchworm??

I don't necessarily think it needs to be as ubiquitous as things like Snoo, but one on occasion would be a delightful bit of flavor IMO.
Of course it'd have to be some sort of curvy wiggly creature, to easily make one think of a tilde. Snake, Worm, Millipede, whatever really. Honestly when I look at the current Tildes logo I already think of the snake from Snake the game.
[Joke reply] I am so so much sorry, but this is the only thing I could think about when I read your reply.
KILL IT WITH FIRE
Holy shit man that is profoundly disturbing on so many levels of existence
this is how I look IRL
There go all of my happy childhood memories of Thomas the Tank Engine...
how do I delete someone else's post
Become an admin :P
This is hilarious.
that was odd. kinda disturbing. I'll send that to a mate immediately
I actually really like the idea of a little colourful caterpillar as a mascot. It kinda already matches the site's icon, and is somewhat happy and upbeat.
Yeah, maybe someone could draw it or make a pixelated version. I'd be down for that.
Just put a couple dots for eyes and antennae on the current logo and :boom: done.
And the colors can represent the variety in the website with all the different tildes we'll hopefully have in the future
Damn, anything that dares to be that colorful in the wild must fear nothing.
Snakes and other slithering creatures have way too many negative cultural associations IMO.
The Python programming language does not seem to have suffered any.
Good point. Now that I think about it, neither does the Rod of Asclepius (snake wrapped around pole) symbol used for the world health organization and many emergency health services.
I'd feel proud to be something that helps turn around those negative associations, I think snakes are adorable.
"Don't worry, we're takin it back!"
We can't have snakes in our weekly D&D game because one of the players is too freaked out by them. :/
Mascots are fun! I would enjoy seeing one.
The lobste.rs folks I guess adopted lobsters in general as a mascot? And then started a campaign to adopt the lobster emoji.
On the other hand, trying to make a mascot happen because all the cool kids are doing it isn't going to work. It has to emerge from the community culture for people to care about it.
This is a bit tough to get right, but I do enjoy the idea of an iconic mascot. Part of me feels like this should happen organically, though a guided design campaign is an advisable start. Any character artists gotten there invitation yet?
I dunno, maybe we have a wiggly rainbow worm that becomes a butterfly with the tilde icon all over on its wings.
(^~^)
OwO
I would favor an octopus, and each tentacle could look like a squiggle. It's perfectly possible to make a cute octopus, and they're smart too.
Or maybe something like the Popcap bookworm (but more squiggly).
I propose a tilde with comically badly drawn eyes on either end in the style of springy which is known to be the tildes mascot, but it very rarely talked about in public let alone displayed, and exists as a sort of memetic infection in-joke.
The theory being that since Tildes did away with the icons for everything and instead uses text, the Tildes up in the top left corner is the mascot, just in text form.
I think the idea of an ASCII based mascot would fit Tildes perfectly. Similar to how EVE Online players can be spotted by the o7 salute wherever they go online.
Something like :~) or ~_~ or anything that includes a ~ but is unique and usable. It could be stylised in graphics if people want to use it in images, but can still be represented as text on Tildes itself without breaking the technical goal.
°~°
My understanding is it came from EVE, then spread to other games (and the internet at large) via Reddit? I don't know for sure though. Might not be the best example, but it's what came to mind first.
I envision the lovechild of a tilde and Clippy.
I think it needs to be organic, but honestly the "logo" for tildes is fine enough for me. Maybe tweak it a bit more to look less "binary" ?
Slap some googly eyes on a ~ and bingo.
I quite like the basic shape of the logo. Could probably build on that a bit.
