What are your thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077 update 2.0?
I had been waiting for this game since 2012, when it was first announced. I bought it day one, without reading any reviews, and it was an instant refund for me.
Now that update 2.0 supposedly makes the game better, I'm thinking of giving it another shot. Has anyone tried this update? What do you think about it?
ITT no one has played v2.0 yet.
I finally did, but not for long. Barely visited the first ripperdoc.
I can say that the gunplay feels tighter than I remember, and I took a look over the skill tree and it is completely different than I remember.
But I need to play it more and experience more of the quests and such.
That's the second time they more or less completely changed the skill tree and how clothes work (now they are just clothes, no stats anymore), so it l there's hope that practice makes perfect.
It's definitely going to depend on WHY it was an instant refund for you. If it was the bugs, I assume it'll be at worst like the original launch and things will be better after a few weeks of hotfixes (I haven't played the hotfix, so no idea how buggy it is currently). I don't think it's likely that any update will fix the fundamental flaws I see in the game, as they're pretty fundamental to how the game was approached. But many people still have a blast with it despite those flaws, so it's really dependent on you.
Cyberpunk plays a lot like an Immersive Sim for me. Games like Prey and Deus Ex. It’s open world like a GTA game but I don’t feel like it excels at being a sandbox.
There are moments where it falls short on being an Immersive Sim, specifically doors and hatches that are non-interactive. Sometimes missions feel linear when they should have multiple ways to solve them. I don’t expect any patches to fix these aspects of the game because I don’t think Cyberpunk knows what genre it should be.
Despite that shortcoming, I found the story captivating and the endings to generally well done. The branched approach to the ending doesn’t feel like a choose your ending color as the endings do have gameplay and narrative difference. You end up in the same room at one point, but completely different paths getting there.
I would give it a recommendation. It won’t blow you away 10/10 omg but there’s not a lot of games that will land the way this one does.
I haven't tried the update yet, so I cannot really answer your question.
However, I've played quite a bit of cyberpunk after they patched the mayor stuff. I would have recommended the game back then. So I guess it's probably only better now.
I recommended the game day one (on PC) and played it all the way through.
The driving still sucks overall though.
I bought and played the game on PC when it first released and loved it. PC seemed to be the platform with the least amount of issues and bugs though. I haven't touched the game in a couple years but have been following CDPR's progress with the game over the years with numerous large patches fixing a ton and addressing player feedback.
Ver 2.0 is the culmination of that and it's really what the game should have been at launch. They've revamped the police system, skill trees, and how cyberware works. They added vehicle combat, made the NPC AI way better, changed how the mini map works, improved the inventory AI, and more. I started a new character today when the patch released and even though the missions and story are the same, it feels like a completely different game. I'm trying to get my new character up to the point in the story when the DLC opens up before the DLC actually releases next week and am looking forward to that.
The DLC will add a new 30+ hour story with multiple endings, add a new ending to the main story, add a whole new area to the map to explore, and adds a new skill tree and 2 new radio stations. CDPR has recommended starting a new character in preparation for the DLC because of the massive changes in 2.0, as well.
Beyond the bugs and half-baked systems at launch (e.g. the police system), it was one of my favorite sci-fi RPGs ever in terms of story, characters, writing, and world building. There are some side quests that are just as good as the main story, too. Been a hard recommend for me for a while now - especially as more patches have been released.
Thanks for this! Particularly in your detail and how you broke it down.
Not OP, but between your comment, and a review by a YouTuber who generally aligns with my game opinions, I think I'll actually have to try out Cyberpunk here soon.
I had no intent of ever playing it prior, mostly after I saw the launch lol.
I played hundreds of hours and two characters back to back getting all achievements. All of that at release with no game breaking bugs. I considered it at the time my favorite game of all time. The best characters, music, and a dark, but moving story.
I haven't touched it since to avoid burnout.
Just last week, I jumped into a new game and played a few hours. Even then, there were a lot of improvements I noticed and some major qol features.
I just installed the patch today, but didn't have a chance to play too much. That said, I can already tell I'll be playing it much differently. The overhauled perks and abilities, along with all the numerous improvements I've yet to experience are getting me so excited to play again.
With the expansion coming out, I can't even imagine what other games out there (past or future) can come close to toppling it off my top 3 list.
I haven't had a chance to play 2.0 yet but I did a full playthrough at release and another on patch 1.6 using mods and thoroughly enjoyed both. If what you're roughly looking for is a Bethesda-style game with a cyberpunk aesthetic and higher quality writing, then yes, I would highly recommend diving in and giving it another chance with the new patch.
I am worried about the new hardware requirements, I used to get consistent 40-45 fps on medium settings on my RX 590. Now looks like I won't be able to go above low settings.
I haven't played 2.0 yet, but I bought thegame one year after the release and it was in pretty good shape at the time. I played it on GTX 1650 on Linux through Proton, so consider not even utilising the full power of the GPU... and using Core i5 750 (yes, the first generation of Core i CPU). I think I was below minimum requirements with my hardware, yet still I was able to run it on medium at around 30fps (20-35 with average being 28-29 and 0.1% lows probably being single decimal). Given the very old hardwae and underpowered GPU, I call this good performance.
It was probably really big mess at launch, but they ironed it out very well.
I did a bit of a media blackout when it came out because I didn't want to get spoiled on anything. Played it all weekend and had a great time. Then on Monday I find out the entire internet absolutely hates it.
Honestly taking a step back from following things on social media/reading reviews has been one of the best choices I've ever made as far as impact on my enjoyment of media. Go like what you like, it doesn't matter what other people say when it's just entertainment.
It's become more and more difficult to trust that sentiment on games and movies is actually based on honest critique of the product itself and not just some shoe-horned attempt by a group of gamergate bros to further a culture war "movement". Not to mention that outrage still reliably generates clicks, so there are all these perverse incentives for people to be disingenuous.
I don't put any stock in any of it, if it looks interesting I'll go see for myself.
Picked it back up again recently, been stuck in for a few days. Still a few bugs, but but still just as good as I remembered.
The new leveling/skill/upgrade system is a definite step up from the old one, the only downside is that the characters in my old save files were pretty much wrecked by the update, as many of the skills are now completely new and require you to re-spec old characters from the bottom-up, which was a bit jarring.
You now have to install armour implants instead of purely relying on clothing to soak up damage, which kind of takes the heat off of constantly changing clothes. As far as I can tell, every weapon attachment, mod, and clothing item have had their stats adjusted. Some weapons now have scope/muzzle slots where before there were none. They've put a level cap on implants, and also added to and expanded the amount and variation of implants on the market, which is a nice trade-off.
The cops chase you for real now, and you can shoot from the driver's seat. I'm still getting used to the vehicle combat, feels a bit awkward to me, but it's new so I'll give it time. Some cars have mounted guns, which I still haven't fully explored, but I'm sure there's a practical application there.
Mod support got a little bit borked with the update, some things still work, some don't, so some research is probably required there. I don't use many mods myself, but install with discretion I suppose.
All in all, if you liked it before, you'll still like it now... Not sure if this update will change anyone's mind who was on the fence about it, but maybe. And yeah I'll probably grab Phantom Liberty when it comes out. I wanna know what happens.
tl;dr: Still not perfect, but way, way better.
I did not play the game since day 1. I'm already 20h in update 2.0 and I have to say I am digging it, a lot. It feels a lot better overall, and the gameplay is very satisfying.
It even managed to rip me away from Baldur's Gate 3, which was unexpected.
Didn’t realise that was out. After a quick google I’m glad to see they’ve made some improvements to police. Plethora of graphical issues aside that was the most immersion breaking gameplay issue for me. I still can’t wrap my head around gamers excusing that.
My bad; I thought it's already out, but it's actually coming out later today.
lol well these days I don’t engage with a game until whatever new thing its got has been out for a month anyway, so all good with me!
Just tried a minute ago but just for the time to go to the ripperdoc and get jacked full of chrome.
It was the save before the last mission so money wasn't a problem and the talent point weren't as well.
Honestly I don't feel the appeal. I jumped around a bit, didn't want to start a mess, the world still felt shallow like a nice cardboard background... and that's it.
I should play a new playthrough probably but knowing that the origin doesn't change anything and that I already tested all ending back then, really takes any interest out of me.
It doesn't help that this supposedly patch that make the game "as it should have been" just remind me of how badly they lied with that damn 40 minute videos (we still don't have that hacking shown there, that was so cool, just "quickhacks" as in witchers signs).
Also I wasn't remembering a slight but annoying mouse inertia. I checked the options but have seen no way to disable it.
I'll probably try again in the next few days but I have no interest really.
It's worth playing through once anyway, so whoever waited 3 years ago will definitely have a good time today.
You make a very good point about the world being shallow and CDPR not delivering what they showed in that 40m gameplay video. That was one of the main reasons I refunded the game on day one.
But regarding your remark "didn't want to start a mess": the game is all about combat. Shooting, fighting, driving. You are supposed to make messes everywhere you go.
It's not really an RPG in the true sense of the word, but as an action/adventure RPG-lite, I think it works pretty well; as long as you can engage with the "violent dystopia" fantasy that it portrays.
