Not a bad update after 2 years and the limited edition one looks especially great. It's not a good enough upgrade for me to abandon my 512GB model, but shows they're iterating toward SteamDeck 2 which is where I'll likely jump to.

That limited edition is pretty, and OLED is really nice but I'm in the same boat. It won't make me upgrade, which I don't think is their intention anyway with them shelving the 64/512 LCD...

I read you could sell yours and upgrade to the OLED model in the next comment over, which may be a good deal. It's certainly more attractive than outright buying a new one.

Damn, I love that red color - hopefully they make all the parts available for repairs and I can just bling out the first Gen one...

One of a friend group posted the link in our group chat and I mentioned that the limited edition looks great, but I don't need to buy another deck. Got an offer to buy mine at a fair price contingent on me getting one of those, so may pull the trigger on it...

Looks like they also upped the storage on the $400 model to 256 GB. That still has the LCD screen though. Love how exciting the handheld market's getting.

That said, I wonder how easy swapping the OLED into the Gen 1 will be and I hope it stays 800p... Unless the OLED has marked improvements in the battery life department I'll stick with the LCD for the time being.

Just noticed the display Decks in the background are using the DeckMate... Er, artist formerly known as DeckMate as a mounting solution.

Valve's position is the screen is not swappable, though I'm sure people will try. Sounds like the mounting process is different since you don't need to open the back to replace the new screen....

Thanks for the GN link! I was wondering where everyone got all this extra information seeing as the clip is basically a teaser.

Its still 800p + the battery and shrunk processor like the others mentioned. In the LTT video they said valve is claiming something like 50% better battery life.

Saw GN's video, '3-12 hours' is pretty hilarious. I mean, I get why they say that range but it's basically like your car saying "you might go 100 miles, maybe 400! Who knows."

Highway MPG vs city MPG is a pretty wild swing though as well.

OG Steam Dec says 2-8 and reality is more like 1,5-8. It can really do 8 hours with the right game (ie. Darkest dungeon), lowest brightness etc. And it can eat battery like nothing when you run ie. Cyberpunk on unlimited power and unlimited fps.

So 3-12 would very likely be real depending on what and how you play it.

Don't be sad. I have mine for one and a half year and I'm not switching to this newer one. It brings better battery life and that's about it for me. I don't care that much about bezels or OLED....

Just think of it as you've got to enjoy the Steam Deck 7 weeks earlier than if you waited for the refresh.

Kickass, and the little performance boost is some nice icing on top. I'll probably keep my original as a backup. I love the deck, the thing is absolutely amazing and I'm more than happy following along with it instead of the pc hardware world. If valve successfully iterates with a deck 2, I have every intention of having that just be my PC gaming setup and abandon using/upgrading the home system for that purpose. I'll just keep trading up. Assuming cost stays mostly the same, I can follow along for less than the cost of a high end GPU.

I imagine you are far from alone, and I find it interesting that coming out with a dockable handheld was what pushed Valve ahead in the broader sense.

I'm very happy for this update.

I won't be getting it, myself, as I'm a pleased-as-pie owner of the original Deck, and this isn't a big enough upgrade for me to take the plunge. I'm still happy though because it's setting a precedent that the Deck is now a longitudinal hardware platform instead of a one-off device. People have been wanting an Index successor for a while now, for example, and Valve has been silent on that front. We have no guarantee that we'll ever get another iteration.

I was mildly worried that the Deck was going to follow the same pattern. While it's amazing right now, the original hardware specs will inevitably "fall off" over time as technology moves forward. By updating the hardware, Valve is showing that they're prepared to keep the Deck moving along with the times. This is essential for me, because now that I can easily play my Steam library in this form factor, I don't ever want to have to give that up again.

Holy smokes - $360 for a 512 model is a steal. Between this and the new OLED models, I’m feeling a little bummed about buying a $550 256GB original model 😄 But for new buyers, this is all awesome !!

Consider this - by buying the OG 256GB for 550 (just as I did), we showed interest and made this possible for others. And for us in the future when Steam Deck 2 comes out (I hope it does!).

Gotta wait till the new one ships for the real discount. I'm betting the largest Steam Deck userbase has enough money that we're not selling the old one till the new one is booted up and running.

How is it that there are OLED phones, OLED mobile gaming systems, OLED TVs, etc, but no OLED monitors for under $1000?

Have you seen the pixels? It isn't as simple as just making bigger pixels. There is also a problem with yield. As you scale up, the higher a risk for a defect scraping the entire panel. If it is a smaller panel, you have greater assurance that any defects in manufacturing won't impact lots of the material you used. LCD is less prone to these issues when they are bigger because they are transmissive. With OLED, each pixel is responsible for producing light.

Another big factor is number of units sold. For the most part, only a handful of PC gaming enthusiasts are going to be buying OLED monitors, whereas smartphones, TVs, and consoles are sold in vastly greater numbers, allowing economy of scale to kick in.

It’s not confirmed but there are a number of hints pointing to this Deck revision using the same OLED panel as the OLED Switch, which if true allows it to piggyback off of the component cost reduction that comes with it being used in Switches.

Coincidentally I was looking into the options for better screens on my Steam Deck, so this came at just the right time. On the other hand, that's way more money than I was looking to spend and I'm just about to go to a vacation, so I'm not likely to buy this new version. I'll probably be waiting for the next generation with more powerful hardware behind it, however long I may be left waiting. The current model is good enough that this new refresh just isn't worth it to me - frankly, I don't see why people complain about the base model LCD. It's not as good as you'd see on a premium smartphone, but it really doesn't need to be.

However the Steam Deck is an excellent device, which I enjoy a lot!
