Looking for non-political content
Every now and then, I need, or at least am drawn to, something to turn my brain off for a bit. For some reason, this is often political content for me, which probably isn't healthy. Was wondering if you guys had any recommendations for content creators that upload fairly regularly about non-political, not-super-deep stuff.
For YouTube channels:
Linus Tech Tips, though the WAN show (their weekly podcast) sometimes skirts the edge of politics (somewhat abated even then, because it's often Canadian politics).
Technology Connections for more than you will ever need to know about appliances
Tom Scott's back catalogue if you didn't keep up with it
Townsends for historical food and cooking.
The next thing I would probably recommend would be getting into a long running old TV show. Star Trek is my easiest example. Even if you skip the really campy TOS epsiodes, that's still 3 shows with seven 26 epsiode seasons, and then Enterprise, and then the modern shows.
Also Christmas lights. I pray that he never finds a good solution for lights because I don't want the quest for the perfect efficient light strand to ever end.
Love the old Trek. I wonder when high moral, monster of the week tv is coming back. Soon, I hope.
Are none of the current Star Trek shows like that?
To a degree, but I'd like to be able to check in without knowledge of a previous episode. Strange New Worlds is ok for that but it's still the product of contemporary tv.
Technology Connections is great. I could listen to that dude talk about anything. Who knew I needed more content on dishwasher soap pods?
On youtube, I watch primarily non-political content as youtube is where I go to get away from all that stuff. Here are a few of my favorites.
Daily Dose of Internet
Anyone from the Hermitcraft server
Badd Medicine (movie reactions (no typo))
Cocoa Couch (also movie reactions)
Primitive Skills
Primitive Technology
Taskmaster
RTGame
LetsGameItOut
EmKay (can be political as it curates, reads, and reacts to subreddit posts)
Huggabees
The Heck (reaction channel)
TrueGreen7
Good Mythical Morning
TheMythicalSausage (Minecrafter)
MinutePhysics
CinemaSins
CinemaWins
Also, not going to lie. If I hadn't already seen all of the episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, I'd be watching that to numb my mind from the shitty world around me. Hell, sometimes just rewatching it helps.
Good Mythical Morning are a great channel to dive into for people who haven't seen their stuff before since they have over a decade of daily content to binge through.
Also, holy crap! Someone else on Tildes that watches Badd Medicine? I love those guys! Oak is the best, I love his heartfelt commentaries.
Movie/TV Reaction channels are my guilty pleasure. So here are some more of my favorites that I regularly watch which might interest you and other people who also enjoy reaction channels:
EOM Reacts (my absolute fav reactor, J is a sweetheart!)
Ramblers Inc (relatively new, but seem like lovely chaps)
#StruggleNation
Popcorn In Bed
You, Me, & The Movies + You, Me, & The TV
JUST TRUST ASH + DON’T TRUST HANNAH
Reelin' with Asia and BJ
YaBoyRockLee (mostly anime reactions)
YaBoyRoshi (ditto, mostly anime)
Others I only watch occasionally:
Dos Cavazos, The Normies, CineBinge, The Homies, CinePals, MAC React, Mary Cherry, pReview'd
I'm a reaction watcher too and I also watch Badd Medicine!
I'd add Blindwave to your list here
As well as Preview'd
I actually mentioned pReview'd in my comment. I love their Squid Game reaction in particular! :)
Ah I missed it, sorry was on mobile and the inability to save a draft and see the post again makes it difficult to catch details sometimes!
I'm going to check those other guys out!
And yes, Oak is my fav, too. Especially his reaction to How To Train Your Dragon 2.
One other that I didn't mention is Cinema Therapy. Two lifelong friends - a licensed therapist and a movie director, sit down to watch emotional movies and react.
My favorite reactions from Oak (and the rest of the crew) was during their recent Avatar: The Last Airbender viewing. I loved seeing this giant muscle of a man's man, who regularly hangs out with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and emcees the Arnold Classic, absolutely fall in love with my favorite animated kids show. :P
I am also happy they are finally dipping their toes into proper anime now too, with Attack on Titan. Hopefully they keep going and check out some classics after that though, since as much as I enjoy AoT, it's far from my favorite.
Ah yes! I cried with him on that. I love that he helps me cry with his reactions. He's a very caring father. I haven't watched AoT as it seemed quite grim from the first episode.
Jenny Nicholson - random stuff, mostly fantasy stuff and the like
Mina Le - social media and fashion stuff
Never Knows Best - in depth gaming
Real Time History - history, mostly 20th century
The Great War - week by week coverage of the First World War, a little bit other stuff
World War Two - same as above but Second World War
It's posted to Tildes frequently so maybe you've heard of it already, but I really enjoy Jet Lag the game. That channel also introduced me to Michelle Khare (she appeared as a guest for one season), and I've come to enjoy her channel quite a bit too.
My favorite channels that always make me laugh:
Let's Game It Out - Completely chaotic gameplay, breaking games or bringing them to their limit in very funny ways
The Grim Kleaper(and Anti-Kleaper) - comedic commentary gaming/challenge content mostly revolving around Total War Warhammer 3 and Rimworld, though you don't need to have played to enjoy.
Reggie(and Reginald II) - Same friend group as Kleaper and very similar content, but different and enjoyable.
Max0r - funny commentary content/"reviews" with absolutely outstanding editing and very funny jokes/dubs. Went viral a while ago for his MGR Revengeance summary, of which you may see references to every so often
Can recommend Boylei Hobby Time. Every week he uploads a diorama he made from Minifigures. Always a good watch.
Similar channels that are also really good, IMO:
North of the Border
Studson Studio
Night Shift
Black Magic Craft
Something Wicked
Lars Stranden
Luke Towan
Nat 1 videos
Nerdforge
StevenRichter
p.s. ?tag=modelmaking, ?tag=dioramas ;)
this is tough ask in 2024.
my opinion is the chess world is as non-political as they can be) the candidates tournament is happening right now and its pretty fun to follow. i like the gothamchess coverage of it on youtube.
I'm a major political junkie so maybe I'm looking for less 'a change of pace' and more 'a chance to recharge' in my apolitical breaks, but I almost always listen to old audiobooks. The more talented the speaker, the better--and if it's nonfiction even moreso.
Though right off the top of my head, if you like niche competitions, I came across the Excel World Championship a few months back and after the initial bewilderment, it was pretty fun to watch.
I would recommend in no particular order:
I had a browse through my youtube subscriptions and made a semi random selection of channels that I highly enjoy and don't feature political content.
For extremely well designed video essays I can recommend Nexpo. He focuses on horror themed and disturbing content, but does thorough research.
Adam Savage’s Tested - Mr Mythbuster himself and some other tech gadget reviews
Smarter Everyday - digestible science content
Pop Culture Detective - media video essays
Like Stories of Old - movie video essays
Bright Sun Films - Abandoned places and bankrupted companies
I really like the Comedy Bang Bang podcast for this. Every year in December there are "best of" complications, if you're interested in a good place to start.
