Don't Look Up
The Dark Knight being so low is super surprising.
It seems that none of the top 13 are traditional comic hero movies... I wonder if it has something to do with the over saturation of the genre in recent years?
I hope I don’t offend anyone but putting a comic book movie in the top ten unless you’re a teenager seems unlikely to me.
I’m not a teenager, I’ve seen more movies than most people even compared to other film buffs, and I put it on my list.
Besides the list includes Hot Fuzz, Star Wars, and EEAAO. I don’t think The Dark Knight is immature compared to those films.
I don't think there's anything wrong with putting a comic book movie in the top ten (speaking specifically about the superhero type... There are a lot of other "based on a comic" movies that may not be obvious!). I think Batman Begins is a pretty excellent movie on its own, for example. My point was really that people may be a bit exhausted by the flood of (mostly Marvel) comic movies in recent years and it may be impacting their considerations for "Favorite movie"
Also, just pointing out that the prompt was really a more subjective favorites list, so there really is no wrong answer. I mean I put MST3K in my top ten, even though I recognize it is not a technically "good" movie. :D
Yay! Thanks for this. I'm going to be adding a lot of these to my watch list :)
So happy The Thing made the top ten. It's one of my all time favorites and I consider it near perfect in terms of atmosphere creation.
This is a interesting list. I have seen personally most of the top 13, with only Hot Fuzz, The Thing (not that big on horror), and Blade Runner are the ones that I have not seen yet.
Yay I love this! I really should rewatch Alien, it got so many votes and I feel like it's been an incredibly long time since I watched it, maybe I'll have to rewatch it and modify my list making all your hard work moot @aphoenix muahahaha.
Thanks for doing this though! I'd love to see the television shows one day too, but definitely protect your peace!
Watch both Alien and Aliens and then go see Alien Romulus in the theater afterwards. It takes place between those two movies.
Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks!
Strg-F, 'Memento'... 'Phrase not found' 😶
And 'Casino', 'Zodiac' or 'Fight Club' weren't mentioned either. I'd have thought they would make it into a collection like this.
I almost put Fight Club on my list, but I swapped it with Pulp Fiction. It just hasn't aged as well for me, 100% due to me and 0% due to the movie.
I didn't put in my top 10 because I always struggle so I didn't attempt it, I love so many movies.
Fight Club is definitely up there, along with American History X and the original The Crow.
Don't guess my age...
I nearly put Memento on my list, but felt it didn't have the replayability that some of my other picks had. It's probably in my top 3 Nolan films though.
Yeah, I totally understand that.
Memento has a special place in my heart, because watching it the first time really blew my mind. It was (and is) such a fantastic setup for a story, I really loved the idea and execution. But there's also a bit nostalgia for the time I watched it mixed in, so... yeah. 🙂
I can't believe I didn't include Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair in my list!
Thanks for making this list! I tried to get chatbots to extract this list just yesterday, but the best they would do for me was a list of 49 of them. I figured there were a lot more than that. Hopefully I'll get to adding my own top 10 to the list, but as usual, "I'll do it when I have time" probably means I'll never actually get to it. But I'll sure be going through this list and the comments from the other thread.
That's really cool to see, fair play for compiling this! I'm curious now to do a breakdown on release year/decade, genre, popular directors/writers, etc.
Just one note, you have 12 Angry Men down twice in the last list, is that a typo or two votes?
My original idea was to use https://www.omdbapi.com/ to get that information although I have not verified anything about the feasibility of doing that. Also in all honesty, I'm probably not going to do it.
12 Angry Men was two votes, I messed up at de-duping the list. At some point I'll update. There are also a few more comments now from the original thread that could be incorporated, which might change the overall result.
I missed that last thread, but still happy to see In Bruges and Ghost in the Shell mentioned in this list, even if they only have one and two votes respectively.
That said though, I am a bit disappointed to not find Patlabor 2 or Redline mentioned here. They are admittedly pretty niche animated titles, but damn if they aren't perfect for what they are.
People are still replying, feel free to add your list.
I said it in theprevious topic - picking ten movies is nightmare! And this list proves it. There are so many movies I would pick and so many I forgot whe thinking about it!
Good posts and great list, thank you! Once I'm at home, I will read through it and re-discover all the movies I already like!
I made a list of this on Letterboxd for anyone who might be interested. Let me know if I have picked a wrong version of a movie.
Not gonna lie, this looks almost identical to every other internet community's top movies list - a popularity contest and nothing more.
Not gonna lie, this comment sucks. What were you looking at achieving by leaving this comment? If it was to make me feel crap about having spent time trying to foster discussion on Tildes, then mission fucking accomplished.
Honestly this list fascinates me a lot. Every movie on this list is someone favorite top ten movie of all times. And its important because its not some fake internet poll, actual people spend time thinking about it.
I was commenting on the results. Didn't really think about that you spent a lot of time on this. I meant no offense, I'm sorry :(
Eh, I understood what you meant. It's pretty reddity in the taste being shown.
Ah yes, the place no one here came from. We should have more refined tastes here. /s
I think it’s to be expected but I don’t think people should get mad at someone for pointing it out.
Eh it successfully discouraged me from participating. I'd been trying to really think through mine, but eh I'm one human.
The prompt was favourite movie rather than best or top movie so somewhat expected that these are popular movies.
I disagree a bit here. While it is certainly well known top list films, there is no Godfather, Pulp Fiction or The Dark Knight in the top 10. That is a bit unusual.
