This just hits differently. I love the original Naked Gun trilogy, I rewatched it a year ago. It's a whole genre that just died. I see other commenters are excited by this, but the trailer didn't get me at all. It feels like a Deadpool lol-so-random movie, which is popular, but it's not my cup of tea.
It's a shame (for me).
Yeah, I have to agree. There's something about the deadpan delivery, and background nonsense that is just missing. Here's the trailer for the original The Naked Gun for comparison. It just hits...

I did think the OJ joke came pretty close, though, with that little glance at the camera.

One main reason for this movie to fail is the use of CGI. Comedies like Naked Gun and The Blues Brothers have a kind of physical comedy that only works because they feel real. Practical effects are essential for that sense of reality, in which something is ridiculous yet corporeal. It is one thing to watch a bunch of cars pile upon another. It is another entirely to watch CGI cars do the same. The former is funny and absurd because you know they went to ridiculous lengths to make a very silly joke. That is the joke. I haven't seen any practical effect in that trailer, which is why I am skeptical that this remake will work. That is one of the reasons why Seinfeld's film, Unfrosted, did not work. CGI doesn't hit the same.
Genre isn't really that important to me. I loved Airplane!, Hot Shots!, and Wrongfully Accused, and those were all riffs on other movie genres that I would put in the same thematic category with...

Sure but in the decades since these movies came out the action movie genre has also changed a lot. So has humor to be sure. Maybe someone could pull off true slapstick but I don't know if that's...

Yeah I'm not sure either. I've been trying to pinpoint exactly what made those old movies special, and the best I could come up with is that they have this "Dad joke in movie form" energy....

Yeah where’s the spoof!!! That’s like the whole concept if you’re going to use that title. And people saying it’s a different time and humour. Maybe it is but these movies need spoof or else...

I think you all would really enjoy his style--you never know what's going on, you just know he's doing it on purpose and it's going to be an absolute riot.
Highly recommend, everyone looking for a refreshing injection of comedy that really kinda defies all modern comedy cliches. I was laughing the whole time

And honestly if there are any two people I trust to handle this correctly it's Akiva Schaffer (director) and Seth MacFarlane (producer). Consider me a little hyped.
I'm skeptical that anyone can fill Leslie Nielsen's shoes, including Liam Neeson, but their names are similar enough that I'll give him a pass (lol). I do think Akiva and Seth MacFarlane should be...

I do think Akiva and Seth MacFarlane should be able to pull off something good regardless, there's a lot of creative and comedic expertise between the two of them.
Seth with Liam Neeson doing comedy? Ok, I'm down for it. Liam does an amazing straight man routine. See him in The Extras. So good. Omg That OJ moment 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Please, oh, please, let this be this...

Please, oh, please, let this be this generation's Airplane!. I have hope!
I’m looking forward to it! The trailer worries me a little that it might end up being too “Kingsman” style of humor rather than “Police Squad” style of humor…but I did enjoy Kingsman. Will have to...

Look I like Liam and Seth and this seems like a okay fun movie but I don't feel Naked Gun at all. I really hope this is not representative for the whole movie. What's with all the blood and "cool"...

What's with all the blood and "cool" action? Drebin always came out on top but never in a cool way and mostly by accident and that made it funny coupled with Nielsens deadpan unawareness. If Charlie Sheen could do it so can Liam Neeson.
I can't believe I'm saying this but because the Zuckers are not an option here they should have looked at how the Wayans tackled Scary Movies. While these movies are not on par with the old spoofs they at least got the genre right. This is not a Naked Gun movie
Ok... I'm going to watch this movie. So that was better than expected. I didn't have high hopes going in, and Liam is definitely too old to be doing any fighting (looked odd) but I definitely...

Fourth wall breaking was a big part of that Zucker brothers brand of humor.
Oh man, TIL that the Zuckers (one or the other or both) directed Top Secret!, Rat Race, and a substantial chunk of the Scary Movie franchise. 🤯
Yup! Knew about two out of three of those.

Like walking in front of the set because two people can't walk through the door at once. It's fucking funny and it requires zero digital enhancements.
It's also that the detective/police genre has fallen out of fashion for the action movie so I think the parody has to look different too.
Genre isn't really that important to me. I loved Airplane!, Hot Shots!, and Wrongfully Accused, and those were all riffs on other movie genres that I would put in the same thematic category with The Naked Gun.

Exhibit A: I've been swimming in raw sewage. I love it!

Have you gone back to watch the TV show? If not, highly recommend it. Still holds up, and something about it in TV form really works better.

I don't think we should try to compare the two. The Naked Gun is very much a product of its time.
Don't look at it as a replacement. Nothing can replace those classics. Go in with a fresh mindset of a modern movie calling back to it's heritage.

July 15th!
Did you watch Angie Tribeca? Its very much Police Squad modernized but not as good, but still good.
Liam Neeson has been talking about doing comedy for years now -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvVFvqd3lqA
The final few seconds sold me on checking this out. That's exactly the kind of humour I hoped for from a Naked Gun.
That was a solid gag lol
I’m looking forward to it! The trailer worries me a little that it might end up being too “Kingsman” style of humor rather than “Police Squad” style of humor…but I did enjoy Kingsman.
Will have to wait and see

It actually looks good..!? Made me laugh twice!
I’m cautiously optimistic. The last bit had me laughing and the Liam Neeson reveal at least brought out a chuckle.
