So we have a month with movies from the 1990s and we are starting off with Lost Highway directed by David Lynch from 1997.

Thanks to everyone who have so far participated in the five movies we did in November. We need to pick four movies for December and it is going to be any movies from the 1990s.

In addition, I think it will be too much to do a vote on voting categories, but I am curious to get some feedback and ideas. Should we go narrower like genres (westerns, horror, science fiction) or perhaps niche genres (road movie, murder mystery, historic)? How about directors - like I had an idea of doing a Kubrick versus Spielberg for example. Actors, countries, film festivals? Or is it okay to have the category be very broad?
Prime has the documentary "Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe" while Netflix is running "Escaping Twin Flames" which were produced by different investigative reporters but take a similar approach to exposing this new group. Both rely on the testimony of ex members of the group to expose the founders power and control and how things changed when the group wasn't working out as they planned.
Apparently the group has a strong presence on facebook and there is also an entire reddit sub for its adherents.
I watched both of these multi part documentaries and was fascinated by the origin and rise of this group. The founders, Jeff and Megan (who now goes by Shaleia) are preying on the desperation of mostly female followers who are desperately seeking their 'one and only true love', their "twin flame". Using a technique of turning all hurts and pains inward the pair asserts they will help heal people who will practice their 'mirroring' technique.
But it starts to get really strange. Shaleia appears to be the one who started with the 'spiritual' aspect of the enterprise and Jeff appears to be the one with a fervent entrepreneurial bent who has turned it into a money making proposition.
They were living in a run down apartment when they began, but now a few years later, have bought a large home with a lake view in Michigan, with Jeff boasting about his Corvette and Porsche in the driveway. Even stranger, they have people living and working in their house to keep their enterprise running. There are shades of other religious communities with a strong 'messianic' leader that have started this way with Waco being mentioned in the documentary. Jeff even suggests, very strongly, that he may be the Christ.
The adherents pay for private or group facetime sessions with Jeff and Shaleia and are encouraged to take their video courses, which can be anywhere from $100 to $8,888. And those who have taken on the role of being life coaches under them are also encouraged to find more life coaches - it seems to be a combination of multi level marketing, religion and some kind of mass delusional 'teaching' to desperate and gullible people.
Jeff and Shaleia encourage people in their group to cut off relationships with anyone who is not supportive of Twin Flames, a sure sign of a cult, and there are several testimonials from hurting parents who are desperate to be back in touch with their children.
And in probably the strangest twist, when very few people were finding their "twin flame" to be responding, Jeff proclaimed that their twin flame already was part of the group - but since most of the group were women, he insisted that several of the women pair up and that one of them was now a "divine male", to the point of asking some to change their clothes, hair and go by a new male name.
It's all quite fascinating, and I couldn't believe that in an age where information on cults and cult activity is so easy to find, that so many people would be sucked into Twin Flames Universe and not see the control and manipulation going on in their lives.
Both are well worth watching but if you only have time for one, I'd recommend Prime's documentary - seems to be a bit more professionally produced.

What is a relatively minor trope that is in way more movies than it should be that just bugs the crap out of you?
For me it is knowing that the driver/pilot AND copilot of any vehicle will get killed when the antagonist and protagonist are in a vehicle together. No pilot ever uses autopilot either so the plane just goes into an instant death spin immediately afterwards.
This is the fifth and last movie we discuss of Academy Award Winners. Ariana DeBose won for Best Supporting Actress. It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.

Just saw this other thread about the FNaF movie actually doing quite well at the box office, which apperently is much newsworthy and something I should care about. This here thing is popular, this and that is trending, read all about it. Yay. Well sure, it's quite nice they made their money back, but I felt it looked a bit overproduced and cookie-cutter like. Okay, haven't actually seen the blessed movie, but I've decided to hate it, so there!
I know about David Lynch, I know about Cronenberg, I know about J-horror, all that old stuff, but are there any contemporary horror movies which will screw me over? Something a bit more art-house and crazy? I've been a bit away from movie for the last decades, but I'm unsure if I'm out of the loop, or if there is anything to be out of the loop about.
I've just come from my latest rewatch of Blade Runner and its sequel. Two of my favourite films ever. I always find myself totally engrossed in the atmosphere of the films, and I often crave more of it.

My initial post didn't get a lot of answers, but I am taking a gamble that maybe it will gain some traction if I just start it.
Every Monday I will post a topic for the movie of the week based on the voting results. We need 5 titles for each Monday - including October 30 this time around.
Going for a voting system in the hope that people will have a little more motivation to participate than if it was just pure random. To keep it manageable I propose we vote for the next month in advance - also to keep the number of voting posts to a minimum.
It will not be free for all, but will allow votes within a very broad category.
For November it will be Academy Award Winners (in any category). Can be sound, costumes, best supporting actress, foreign language, best picture or any of them - excluding shorts and documentaries for now (we could do that as a theme later).

With some inspiration from the Album of the Week over in ~music I was thinking of having something similar for movies. A weekly discussion on a specific movie - we just need to find a selection format that works. We already have a fine weekly thread with free for all discussion, but I was thinking more like a movieclub type thing.
I was thinking a format where every Monday a new topic is created for a specific movie, and the first Monday of the month it will also include the titles for the rest of the month.
The big problem is how to select the movies and what considerations to availability on various streaming services should be done. Which is not easy since the catalog isn't even the same across countries for the same service. I would like there is some element of random discovery, but with some intent of finding quality titles.
I personally enjoy older classics and film festival type movies such as what is on The Criterion Channel and to an extent Mubi. They also have the benefit of being curated services with monthly selections we could simply piggyback on. But maybe that is a bit too niche. There are of course tons of various "best movies of all time"-lists to use and the 1001 movies you must see before you die would be a good candidate to get a mix of all time classics and some titles that aren't mainstream.
We could also do various thematic selections based on decade, genre, director or actors, but I really just want to get started and see how the traction is.
Feel free to chime in if you are interested and have suggestions on how we could choose the movies to watch, and hopefully I can get this thing started Monday the 30th of October.

So the discussion at https://tildes.net/~movies/1ar2/martin_scorsese_says_fight_back_against_comic_book_movie_culture_by_supporting_directors_like made me think about mainstream Hollywood way of movies versus - well everyone else? I am not even sure I like the term "arthouse" movies, because movies are movies regardless of the boxes we put them in, but for the sake of the argument movies that don't fall in the category of traditional mainstream storytelling. Is it just French artsy fartsy pretentious weirdness or is (quote) real cinema (unquote)?
I think my movie habits have been pretty average. I am not American, but most of what I have watched during my lifetime have been Hollywood productions. By a huge margin. In recent years I found myself going more and more bored with both movies and tv series from whatever the algorithms at the streaming services were pushing to me. Not that it was bad, just felt more and more like a product designed after a specific set of criteria aimed at my taste demographic. So I forced myself to break out of the bubble and watched movies totally outside my comfort zone with something I am sure the algorithms would never have recommended me. Started with movies by Kieslowski and Wong Kar-wai. And since then I feel like a whole new world of movies has opened up for me. Not that everything is magically great. There are still pretentious French movies that make me roll my eyes, but most of all it is something different. Story telling rules I thought couldn't be broken are thrown in the air and something completely unexpected appears on screen instead.
It takes some getting used to. I really struggled with a good deal of self-doubt whether I could actually understand these movies, because I have studied film theory or went to art school. At the end of the day it is really just about watching things intuitively and trying not to analyze everything or thinking about what things are supposed to mean, and be curious to why the movie does things that maybe the complete opposite of the film techniques I was used to from more mainstream movies.
This is not to bash at the Hollywood blockbuster way of filmmaking, because when that formula works - it really damn well works. But so can something completely different like Hlynur Pálmason's Godland, Haneke's Funny Games or Bujalski's Computer Chess - just to name a few of my recent very compelling movie experiences.

I'll start with a movie the Sci-fi channel used to show every now and then (though it originally aired as a mini-series on ABC): The Beast, based off of Peter Benchley's novel of the same name. If the author sounds familiar, he wrote a book you may have heard of: Jaws.
Featuring a giant squid terrorizing yet another idyllic New England town, The Beast isn't a very good movie when you get down to it, but it's an enjoyable watch nonetheless. It's essentially a 90s remake of Jaws with a giant squid instead of a shark, but it has a certain coziness and warmth to it that I enjoy. It's not even close to my favorite creature feature, but it was on my mind so I figured I'd let someone else talk about how awesome Lake Placid is. And this movie has Gil Grissom from CSI going up against a giant squid, so that's pretty neat.
Anyway, it's the weekend, let's watch some horror movies!

I'm at a bit of a crossroads. There's a show I really adore (two actually, it's complicated) because it has lots of characters that appeal to me as someone who never found a lot of characters I could really identify with. However, I've become distant from it recently because there's a big theatre/musical element to it that has become more pronounced over time, to the point where it kind of overshadows the rest of the show for me. I can't watch it now because when someone starts singing, I roll my eyes and turn it off. Musicals don't work for me typically because the logical side of me can't rationalize people singing about their worries, etc. in the context of something ostensibly meant to be taken seriously. It completely takes me out of it. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's some deep-seated childhood trauma, who knows.
That said, is there anyone who can perhaps offer some film musicals that they feel play well to a non-theatre nerd demographic? I've seen stuff like Rocky Horror and Cannibal! The Musical, which I didn't hate mostly because I adore Tim Curry and the South Park guys. I'm not about to jump on the La La Land bandwagon or something, though.
EDIT: Since some people pointed out that I didn't mention the title, the show(s) in question is Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel. You can find both on Youtube if you're curious. Be warned though, it's pretty R-rated and LGBT-oriented if that's not your thing.
Anyone want to offer movies they enjoy but nobody else seems to? I suppose you might call them "guilty pleasures", but I don't feel guilty about them. Sometimes weird crap appeals to you for some reason you can't quite explain. Maybe it's that there are ideas that in theory work but are implemented badly, bad casting that is still weirdly entertaining in some esoteric way, or a soundtrack that's honestly better than the film itself but oddly holds the whole thing together.
I'll go to bat for Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive. It's honestly a mess on film, but something about the combined schlock value of all the stuff going on made it weirdly endearing to me. There's plenty of memorable scenes, a great soundtrack (that musical sting when the machines attack somebody lives rent-free in my head), terrible but entertaining performances ("Curtis...is he DEAD?") to say nothing of the bizarrely inconsistent plot/gimmick with aliens causing machines to come alive. To me, it's the definition of "so bad, it's good" because clearly there was craft and intent involved, but when your co-director is cocaine (King admits he was deep in the depths of cocaine addiction at the time), the end result can be a wild card. I still watch it frequently after discovering it on late-night HBO as a kid.
My runner-ups are George P. Cosmatos' Leviathan and Paul W.S. Anderson's Event Horizon.

So having been a massive fan of the Matrix trilogy, I was very excited about the Matrix 4, but obviously with a very hesitant heart of not being too excited, for fears of it failing to meet our expectations. But unfortunately, that's what happened, at least from every person that I've asked about it.
I know it was just the one Wachowski sister that was involved with this version, so it makes sense that it might have a slightly different flavour. And yes, I've watched it about 3 times. I really wanted to see if there was anything I needed to see or think about that would make it enjoyable, as I really wanted to have it up there with the original trilogy. (After all, I did enjoy some of the Wachowski's films after the trilogy.)

I recently watched the limited TV series dramatisation of Les Miserables and really enjoyed it. This made me wonder if there are any recent, faithful adaptations of Treasure Island as either TV serial or movie?
I recently finished watching Silo (2023 - ) on Apple TV and at the end I didn't care much for many of the characters, I just wanted to find out more about the silo itself.
I like those types of sci-fi thrillers, but I cannot remember any of them that made me care much about the characters.

Zombies, aliens, kaiju, regular humans (like ghostface), super humans (like Freddie or Jason) demons, vampires, ghosts, or something else I haven't mentioned. What's your favorite type of villian for horror movies?
I've always been partial to zombies, as I think they're the perfect mix of horrifying and unstoppable yet benign enough to not make the main characters feel hopelessly unable to do anything. I guess I find the idea that given the right choices I can make it out alive more interesting than the idea of a ghost/demon where you're just entirely at the mercy of magical powers that you can't do anything against.
But maybe that feeling of complete powerlessness is what some people are looking for in a horror movie.
To preface, I'm trying to find horror movies that may be considered more on the mild side, something that's more accessible to someone not familiar or comfortable with horror or thriller movies.
Happy Death Day and it's sequel are already on my list, especially since there doesn't appear to be overt nudity / sex and the language is mild.
I suppose it could be described as PG-13 horror, but even the Scream series is actually kinda mild on the gore/violence side of you really break it down, as they have a whodunit plot more than a "let's douse the protags in blood" vibe.
Oh and of course Tremors is always on every list of all time great movies.
Was recently discussing this with someone after we saw Dial of Destiny: lots of movies the past few years have been much longer than they need to be. DoD was 2 and a half hours, Spiderverse 2 made the jump from under 2 hours to almost 2 and a half hours. Is there some incentive for studios to make movies longer that we're not seeing?
