Who was excited to pick a cool username?
Since the website has a username and hundreds we were presented with an opportunity to pick a really nice or cool username on a site that I believe will rival reddit.
I just picked my favourite character. I wanted to pick my first name (which I am 100% sure is not taken) but kind of decided to go towards more anonymity. I decided not to use my reddit username because no one else literally uses it so I will always have an option to make a new account with reddit username
Did you think on that too or just used your reddit username?
EDIT: I have actually changed my username from "ironman" to "metal" since i made this post. Now im like super happy and excited about my "identity" here
Yeah, it's the nicest part of being on a website early, you get the cool usernames.
You bet your lustrous arse.
Chiming in with a foodstuff username!
I think this might have been available when I first found reddit, but I didn't sign up at the time and only lurked. By the time I started making accounts several years later, it was well and truly taken!
Or just one without numbers at the end. lol
People reading this thread might also be interested in these previous discussions:
"So was anyone else eager to join Tildes if only to pick a unique name?"
"Why did you choose this username for your Tildes account?"
well my filter was set to "last 3 days" and I didn't see those. Regardless, maybe that would be a good time to post a new one since I am a part of the new 1k invite wave
I wasn't trying to imply you shouldn't have posted this. I was merely trying to add some history for people - if they want to see more discussions like yours, they can.
Oh, so we're using our made up names now?
I considered the anonymity aspect, and then I concluded that I surely already have a wide enough digital footprint "out there" in terms of the big guys data collection efforts on me. And when it comes to comments I'll be making on tildes, based on my behavior on other sites, I realized I not really trying to hide anything. But I wonder, will tildes culture eventually come to frown on any posts/comments that contain identifying information? Like will it be sort of promoted that people really need to remain anonymous? I myself wouldn't care much either way.
Doxxing should always be frowned upon as it is by definition without consent.
I don't see an issue with people choosing to identify themselves, however. This is not Anonymous. There is no agenda requiring that kind of interaction per se.
You have a point, but I was thinking of anonymity in terms of people in your social circles not knowing your username. I have had 2 accounts on Reddit, made another one after a few years when I was uncomfortable with an idea that someone will have a very easy time tracking my irl info up to facebook and other social media. I don't want to give people with bad intentions such an opportunity. Granted, my 2nd account could still be tied to my main account (I think I made some referencing comments) which can be tied to me ID. Tildes is kinda a new slate for me, only admin who gave me the ref code can link me back to reddit account.
I think anonymity is not going to change compared to reddit, same structure and principles and later, potentially, redditors will come here looking for a better version of reddit and anonymity is one of the biggest and most important aspects.
You know, I've never run into this particular username ever being taken. I have ran into it being blocked, however, for the use of the word "gay".
Looks like @Deimos managed to avoid the Scunthorpe problem with usernames here.
Blocking swear words in user names is dumb, it's not like it's going to really prevent anyone from being exposed to them.
I sure was. I was always late everywhere, so having to settle for mundane cryptic names. And then when i had the chance to choose almost anything, I find myself at lack of imagination. :p
Definitely excited about my user name.
I was pretty stoked to get mine.
I've always wanted to claim this
my favorite movie character name is always taken
I got the one I wanted!
For a second I wanted to pick vargas, ShittyWatercolour, GallowBoob, or so, but nah, I preferred originality.
I didn't actually think of this when I created my account tbh. I simply picked the same username which I use on Reddit.
Reading your post, it felt a bit like a missed opportunity... until I got to your edit, which suggests that you can change your username. (Out of curiosity, how do you do that? I couldn't figure it out.)
Still, even if it's possible to change one's username, I don't think I'll part with my old one. I might create other Tildes accounts when it will be possible to do so (and maybe all the cool names will have been taken by that point), but I want this username to be part of my "main" identity here.
Good to know, thank you! I'd thought there was an automatic option in Settings and felt a bit silly for no managing to find it, haha.
message admin (Deimos), he is a cool guy and do that for you
I regretted having the same username on reddit as the rest of my social media so I'm happy now with my new anonymous one. I hope it's not a famous username, but I've never heard of anyone having it. Also who doesn't love milk.
milk is like a 5th element, I have actually decided to change my name from "ironman" to "metal". wanted something even more basic and elemental too
I got the Norse god of silence and revenge.
I love Norse mythology, names are definitely cool from it too
Yep, I imagine mine is usually pretty hard to get, so I'm glad to be the first this time around.
Happy with mine. It fits.
Damn I was just happy to actually be able to use my regular username without having to add a bunch of extra numbers on the end ); opportunity wasted
I'm just using my Reddit username, I was very proud of coming up with it in the first place, it fits who I am while still remaining anonymous, it's unique, and a portmanteau (Marginalia and Maniac.)
Hell yeah. Never get to pick this one usually.
I just picked my Reddit username, but now I'm curious as to how you changed your name.
message @Deimos, he is a cool guy, he will do that for you
Getting my first name as my username was probably ~60% of my motivation for getting that early invite. Did the same with voat before that went to shit.
what happened to voat? haven't heard anything of it since that r/fatpeoplehate scandal
It got mysteriously attacked with DDOS as soon as it looked like as threat to Reddit.
I'm hoping the same doesn't happen to tildes.
I think this thread is relevant
https://tildes.net/~tildes/2i5/how_would_tildes_mitigate_a_ddos_attack
I could have chosen anything, but I decided to be childish. I like short usernames so @666 it is.
Love a new username database!
Yeah, I rarely get this name on websites/services without discriminator tags. Very glad I ended up with it!
I do enjoy anonymity and that's part of the reason I joined ~, but whenever I have a chance to use my name I have to take it.
it actually looks pretty cool when all the comments in posts have those sleek usernames. 10 years from now when ~ is one of the biggest websites, people would come here and envy the conversations of "founders"
Can we change the username?
There's no option in the settings to change it, but I've seen someone get her username changed when she asked @Deimos.
I know of 5 people (now including the OP of this thread) who have had their usernames changed by Deimos. I assume this won't/can't happen forever, though.
I just asked and not even ten minutes after it got changed. @Deimos is super chill about it and really fast. If you're going to ask for a change I would recommend anybody thinking about it do it soon.
Like you said. This probably isn't going to last forever
yes, if you message admin
I wasn't expecting mine to be available. I was happy to go with my first name, it's not like it gives anyone enough info to figure out who I am. Although, chances are I'll end up making this my public facing profile attached to my real identity, and eventually make a separate account when I want a bit more anonymity, like I do on reddit. Assuming that's allowed on ~ of course, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be.
There had been quite some discussion about it already. The gist of it is they the user should be able to effortless make its comments anonymous of it choose to do so. The specific are still not defined.
got mine, hehe
I usually get lucky as my username is typically unlikely to be taken. For 20+ years since setting up a Bigfoot email address (for a "forever email address") that limited my username to 8 characters which means "insomniac" had to be shortened... but lately it's gotten trickier so I'm glad I'm able to keep it here.
I like my name, but even being a late adopter into sites or services I haven't had an issue getting it. :)
I think psuedo-anonymity is kinda more fun.
I picked the one that allows anyone anywhere to easily doxx me. I'm just too forgetful to use different names. I have basically stuck with the same username since 2001.
i like hardee's
I put my first name because it's so common that it might be the only chance I'll ever get hahahahahah
Same, although I'm frank in a couple other places as well. But they're gonna be completely buried among all the other franks, so I can still have a semblance of anonymity with it
And now I changed it to a cool Turma da Mônica character name (it's a Brazilian comic book series)
No, I can never think of a good one.
Same username I've been using on forums since the early days of Slashdot, but I am glad to see it wasn't taken. :)
I was dumb and didn’t pick a good simple one, but they let me switch. I think they are awesome for taking the time to do that.
absolutely, feels special to be in a small community like this with such a nice admin
