I'm not going to commit to a specific day yet but I'm planning to have the discussion post up before March 15.

Since I've been pinged a few times, I just want to mention that while I am interested in a few of the selected books, I don't plan to participate in all of them. Cloud Atlas wasn't one that interested me very much so I've chosen to skip it (for now, at least).

I mentioned before that I'd jump in when a book from my backlog is chosen though, and two that interested me were The Dispossessed and Piranesi. So I expect to participate in the conversation for those two, at least.

Just to set expectations since I've been CC'd in each of these update threads so far.

It's no problem at all! To be clear I wasn't trying to complain about the pings or anything. I was just starting to feel some guilt about being expected to participate when I wasn't planning to in the first round. You're fine to keep me in the "mailing list", though I tend to catch most new threads in ~books anyway.

Thanks for explaining. I do hope a few people will show up to discuss, but I have no expectation that everyone will participate every time. No guilt is warranted. : )

I'm listening to the audiobook, and I'm about halfway through. I enjoyed the section with the journalist the most, but overall I'm not liking the book that much. So, I decided to watch the movie lol. I liked the movie quite a bit! I'm hoping I'll enjoy the 2nd half more after having that experience.

I saw the movie for the first time only a year (maybe 2) ago, so I still recall some of the details.

I've also been listening to the audiobook, and got about 1/3 the way through before life overwhelmed me and I had to pause (and then I had to return the audiobook in libby and get back on the hold list).

At least as far as I got, I felt like the movie did a pretty good job capturing the book, and various movie scenes would pop into my mind as I listened. I'll be curious to see in the official discussion how others felt about the adaptation of the book.

I considered rereading Cloud Atlas, it's the one I remember the least about.
But for now I just started Dawn by Octavia Butler and probably want to finish that first.

Cool. I hope you come back to discuss Piranesi when we get to it. I'm looking forward to that one. : )

I started the book yesterday, but have been having trouble getting through the first section.

Maybe spoilers (it's the very start of the book though so not much) and negative feelings on the book

I get that the writing is supposed to make you feel like it was written by someone from the 1800s, that the racism is in your face as soon as possible to really hammer home it's a different time without "good old days" sugar coating, and maybe to make you not as sympathetic to the narrator.

My issue is that the end result of that is still reading about two wealthy white guys traipsing around the colonies while using as many obscure words (that almost all have no results on my kindle from the built-in dictionary or Wikipedia) and racist slurs as possible.
So I'm having a lot of trouble getting into it.

For those who are further along/have finished: Do they cool it with the racism anytime soon?

I've heard the other sections are better, but I'm also aware that the sections are split so the second half of the first section is also the ending to the book.
I'm not sure I'm looking forward to getting to the end if it's going to be jumping back to more of this.

If I can't get through this section tomorrow, I think I'll try just skipping it and seeing if the rest of the book interests me more.

My experience with the book is that I related to some later sections quite a bit more.

I have seen a section that is very much science fiction and a different section that is post apocalyptic.

The second section was also not my favorite, however it was not colonial, not nautical, not grossly racist. It was however classist.

For old words, the Oxford English dictionary is a good choice.

Finishing up my current read, and then Cloud Atlas is next! I've got a trip coming up with lots of airport and plane time, so I'm hoping to knock out most (if not all) of it then.

I just finished Cloud Atlas up last night and am looking forwards to the discussion in a week or two. For those folks who are struggling to get through the first chapter or two, the language and tone do change quite a bit as you move into the next few. I think the payoff was overall worth it but will wait to share more detailed and spoilery thoughts until the full discussion.

But I enjoyed it and thanks goes to those who voted the book in and to @boxer_dogs_dance for the book club generally :)

Thanks for chiming in. At the moment, I am struggling with liking the book, about halfway through although I like the current subsection. But I remember Catch 22 and Dune becoming some of my favorite books after a beginning that did not suggest I would like the book.
