Announcing Tildes' Make Something Month (Timasomo) for 2023!

Timasomo is "Tildes' Make Something Month": a creative community challenge that takes place in the month of October.

This is its FIFTH year (can you believe it?!).

If you would like to participate (or simply follow along), make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.timasomo.

The Roll Call thread will be posted there on October 1st. That is where people will formally commit to projects for Timasomo.

FAQs

What is Timasomo really though?

Timasomo is a chance to create something/anything!

There are no restrictions on what you can choose to make.

The best way to get a feel for Timasomo is to check out the previous showcase threads:

These showcases are the culminating event of Timasomo -- a public gallery of participants' creations. Each item in the showcases was a project that community members chose to complete for the event.

In the weeks leading up to the showcase, discussion threads will be posted where people can share their progress.

Can I participate?

Yes! Timasomo is open to anyone on Tildes! Please make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.timasomo.

The greater Tildes community is also encouraged to participate in discussion threads even if you are not actively working towards a creative goal. This is meant to be an inclusive community event -- all are welcome!

If you are interested in participating but do not have a Tildes login, please e-mail the invite request address here for an invite to the community.

How do I sign up?

Make sure you are subscribed to ~creative.timasomo.

On October 1st, there will be a Roll Call thread. By posting your plans to participate in that thread, you have formally signed up for Timasomo!

Didn't it used to be in November?

Yes. Timasomo was originally inspired by NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month, which takes place in November.

Initially, I wanted people participating in NaNoWriMo to be able to share their work with Timasomo as well. In the entire time it has run, however, no participant has publicly submitted any work from NaNoWriMo to Timasomo. Instead, Timasomo has gained its own identity independent of NaNoWriMo.

Many participants from previous years have shared that October would be a better month for them personally, so we moved the event to October.

Also, the event was so fantastically popular that it regularly upstaged American Thanksgiving, thus we only felt it fair that Canadian Thanksgiving be targeted as well.

What are the rules?

Timasomo is self-driven and its goals are self-selected.

On October 1st, participants will commit to a creative project (or projects) that they plan to complete within the month of October.

There is no restriction on the methods/products of creativity: writing, painting, code, food, photos, crafts, songs -- if it's creative expression for you, it works for Timasomo!

Though most will be participating individually, collaborations are welcome too!

What is the schedule?

Timasomo begins October 1st and ends October 31st.

All creative output towards your goal(s) should be confined to this time.

This week prior to the start of October is for planning. There will be a few days at the beginning of November given to "finishing touches" before we have our final thread, which will be a showcase of all the completed works.

Below are the dates that I will be posting weekly threads:

Sunday, October 1, 2023: Roll Call Thread
Sunday, October 8, 2023: Update Thread #1
Sunday, October 15, 2023: Update Thread #2
Sunday, October 22, 2023: Update Thread #3
Sunday, October 29, 2023: Final Update Thread
Sunday, November 5, 2023: Timasomo Showcase Thread

Do I have to share my creation(s) publicly?

Tildes is a privacy-respecting site, and you are not obligated to share your creation here if you do not want to. We'd still love to hear about it though, if you're willing to share process and details!

Is it Timasomo or TiMaSoMo?

Either.

I personally use "Timasomo" because I think it looks cleaner and because too much time on the internet has made my brain incapable of reading "TiMaSoMo" as anything other than sarcasm, but go with whichever you prefer.

The best option, however, is “𝑻𝑰𝑴𝑨𝑺𝑶𝑴𝑶” for reasons that are self-evident.

This Thread: Planning!

Post your ideas.

Give feedback to others.

Set up collaborations.

Ask questions.

Everything in this thread is non-commital! Bounce around ideas and figure out what you'd like to do in our communal brainstorming session.

Also, please do NOT start work on your project yet! Stage setting, planning, and other preparations are allowed (e.g. getting supplies/materials, setting up workspaces, etc.), but save the creation initiation for the 1st.

Get excited for a FIFTH YEAR of awesome projects!

I've always failed at these kinds of zero-consequence commitments, and I feel like participating only to quit a couple of days would make me feel bad.

Still, my brain started thinking of ideas. I could write a (very small) video game, and this would help me get back into drawing pixel art. And making music as I'll need a soundtrack. It could hit all the creative spots in my brain.

Or I could be kinder to myself and just write the music, or just do the pixel art, or just do a software project without any art involved.

    I'll think about it. :)

I've been kicking around an idea for a while for a text "editor" that doesn't allow you to backspace or reposition the cursor. The hope is that it will help writers who have trouble silencing their inner critic get into a flow of "doesn't matter, fix it later, just keep writing" and bash out that first draft.

When I've mentioned it to people before, reactions have been either vague interest or deep horror, so I've never really been motivated to try to put it to code. Maybe now's the time?

I actually really like this idea. You should look at FocusWriter for inspiration. Its a word processor that opens full screen and shows no UI elements aside from the document itself unless you hover near the top or bottom of the screen and comes with options like daily writing goal streak tracking and typewriter sounds to help you stay focused.

Frankly this idea would be a excellent addition to FocusWriter itself if you want to submit a PR for an existing project rather than write your own.

Building it yourself is more rewarding, but Ghostwriter actually implemented that. They call it 'Hemingway mode:

Avoid editing while you write by clicking on the "Hemingway" button in the lower right corner of the editor to disable your backspace and delete keys, creating a typewriter experience.

That is the trouble with internet and creative projects. Someone else has already done it. Always.

The way I usually do this is by shrinking a text editor to display only two lines, and putting two carriage returns between ideas.

If you were to whip up something with good usability, I'd be genuinely interested.

    I’ll make S P A C E.

My house is cluttered and in general disorder. Paperwork not filed, books flying around and things lacking a place to live or that need to leave.

(There is also a photography challenge due on the 15th that I am participating, plus I really need/want to finish my next part in a collaborative mixtape I am putting together.)

    I'm at a crossroads:

One path is the "sit out of Timasomo" path. I don't want to do this, obviously, and it feels a special type of wrong to me as the person who puts on the whole event in the first place. Nevertheless, it's a practical, tempting path for a couple of reasons.

As I read through the responses here, I kept identifying different situations that people brought up that matched my own. @0x29A mentioned not having energy after their workday and workweek. @0d_billie mentioned hardly having any time in October. @arqalite mentioned their worries about participating and not succeeding. I've got a bit of each of these: I'm always exhausted but especially so this year (I've got a challenging batch of students); my October is absolutely packed with nary a free moment in sight; and I'm 2 for 4 on successfully completing Timasomos so far (a statistic I'm genuinely self-conscious about) which makes me a little gunshy on committing to something this year.

This all sounds negative, but honestly, my hesitation to commit right now is actually because I'm in a good place, albeit one that's in a particularly delicate balance. Even though I'm exhausted from work, I'm still eating right and exercising and sleeping decently well and doing all of those health-focused things that I need to do. My mood is up and stable, which is a huge and welcome change after my recent depression. Sidestepping Timasomo will, hopefully, help me keep this current balance -- one that is genuinely important in light of some of the bigger health issues I'm facing which are what are driving me to prioritize all of this so strongly in the first place.

On the other hand, there's another path that I really want to take: making a few custom beatmaps for Beat Saber. I was excited at the prospect of trying it out nearly a year ago, and I did some preliminary setup stuff for it but never actually followed through with the mapping itself. 20 years ago, I spent dozens of hours making dozens of custom DDR stepfiles for Dance With Intensity/Stepmania -- songs that then got dozens of hours of playtime out of me. I delighted in dancing to them over and over again, following the steps that I, myself, created. The idea of doing the same thing in Beat Saber is very alluring to me, and would be very fulfilling if I could see it through.

    I haven't decided what I'm doing yet.

I'm going to mull it over, that timeless dilemma: balance, or Beat Saber?

I have a few projects that have been floating around to try, pondering which to do...

    1. Not sure it's creating enough to count, but I have been meaning to do some work converting the attic above my garage into a storage space. There's a bit of engineering involved (reworking the attic trusses), but still more just physical labor than creative
    2. A program I've been working on for my wife to help her work (she's a research professor and it's an update/refactor to make the software for her research tasks more maintainable by making it scriptable rather than requiring code changes for new experiments) that I keep getting distracted from finishing
    3. I've been designing a circuit to blank a programmable number of WS2812B pixels in a stream so you can put an offset in to the line mid-stream for chained ARGB computer fans so that you can chain them but still individually address them. To set the stage - I recently swapped my computer in to a new case, the old HAF XB EVO was beloved but showing its age and when it reached the point I was having to break out the Dremel to get a new video card to fit, I knew that was enough. In putting it in the new case (TT Ceres 300), I have gone from the philosophy of "I don't want any RGB in my case" to "I wish to put your average disco hall to shame with the shininess of my PC". But I found an annoyance - chained ARGB fans are addressed in parallel, not individually, so you need separate headers to be able to talk to several fans.

#2 is the one I should probably do, but #3 is so tempting and fun sounding, since it's had quite a bit of "this sounds like it should be so easy, why has no one made it before" followed up by "Oh, THAT's why it's more complicated and no one has made it before" in the couple of days since I started researching it...

wrt technical details of #3 for those curious - ARGB computer fans use WS2812B addressable LEDs and hence motherboard ARGB headers are just simple WS2812B protocol emitters. Writing the protocol is pretty easy - you can do it with an Arduino, it's emitting PWM pulses representing 0 or 1 by their width at 800khz with 50ns low blanking sections between groups. It's 24 bits RGB for each pixel in a row - the pixels are sequential, and the first once consumes the first 24 bits and uses it to light itself, then only transmits down the line after it receives its 24.

Reading the protocol, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated due to the timing involved.

      • Edge triggered digital input is a lot slower on the Arduino than digital output - it requires quite a number of clock cycles to set up each call, and needing to not just read the 800khz signal but also determine pulse duration. So it's not really possible to read and retransmit every bit with an Arduino.
      • So plan B, don't actually decode the signal, just count it and use a transistor to let the signal pass after the right number of bits. It's still a bit fast for the Arduino though, more so on getting the timing right for enabling the transistor to pass the signal without either transmitting a spurious 0 from the previous pixel or potentially chopping a leading 0.
      • Also, 800khz is more of a... suggestion. More the max speed, but you technically can transmit more slowly as long as your bits are well formed. The main timing constraint is the 50ns blanking between new frames. This means just using a timer won't work if you want it to be broadly compatible with the protocol, you do actually have to at least count the bits. So there goes the the idea of "Detect leading edge, count 24x offset, then detect the line going low and enabling". Also, even the bit to bit or pixel to pixel time can vary. Some libraries intentionally add time between bits/pixels to give themselves more processing time for other things or to multiplex several strings.
      • A more powerful processor could do it - ESP32 for example is fast enough, especially since you could leverage the motor control system - it has a high speed counter built in, meant to read quadrature encoder outputs for motor positioning! However, much of the point of the Arduino was the intention of it just being a representative prototype before eventually converting it to a $0.05 ATTiny to make this thing cheap enough to be usable (since if it costs $20 you might as well just add an entire new controller for the string rather than play offset games).

So, we have established problems with the various approaches. Normally, my solution now would be "Install WLED on an ESP32 - it can already establish 10 independent ARGB lines, which is plenty for any normal PC". And I did order an ESP32 with a built in LCD intending to install it inside the case glass as a computer stats monitor panel (kind of like the one you can buy for the Ceres, but not the obscene $99 that TT charges for it, combined with their horrendous software suite). But that smells like giving up to me ;) So, potential solutions!

Broadly speaking, the solution I've been looking at involves using high speed binary countdown ICs, specifically TI CD74HCT40103E. You set it with a binary count, then it counts down to 0 and sets a pin high/low to indicate that it's hit 0. We'd be using it like something of a frequency divider, without the timing constraints of an actual frequency divider. Count up to the target number of bits, use the 0 indicator to both pause the count and enable the passthrough transistor, then use a missing pulse detector timer circuit to detect the 50ns blanking pause and reset the circuit.

Of course, things have to get at least a bit complicated - 24 bits per pixel is not a factor of two, so a naive use of the counter to do both the bits per pixel and the pixels delay counting will require Math that is nontrivial if you're wanting to do it in raw circuits while also minimizing part count. Also, the countdown timers seem to be limited to 8 bits, and I want this thing to be settable in a range of up to 32 delay bits - the per pixel delay is 5 bits, and that would be 5 bits, and 10 > 8.

So that puts me down two potential paths I'm considering for the next step, and this is where I am now (and am going to pause until October). Path A, use two countdown timers. One hard-set to 24 (or at least to eat some part of it including the div-by-three part) and the other using jumpers to set the pixels delay in binary (plus any remaining div-by-two from the previous stage if a smaller IC is used). Path B, try to use just a single countdown IC set to 24 and then use the Arduino/ATTiny to process interrupts on a per-pixel boundary instead of a per-bit boundary. Still have to deal with getting the enablement timing right, but that would be slow enough that it should be possible since most of the slowness is in setting up the edge trigger and the reaction after it happens should be reasonably prompt. It might also eliminate the need for the missing pulse detector circuit since that timing could theoretically happen internally to the microcontroller.

In theory, I find the chained counters to be a cleaner and prettier circuit, but I'm also looking at cost for the parts (since I'm wanting to put out the specs afterward so people can build their own), and the timers are a lot more expensive than bulk ATTinys... then again, this is more of a "because I want to" kind of project than a "because it's necessary" kind of project, so I guess I don't need to pay that much attention there ;)

Exciting! I haven't participated in a couple of years, and I would be keen to give it another spin this time to to try and knock out one of the (hopefully) simpler musical projects I've been toying with in my head for a while. That should be doable in theory, provided the arrangement and recording all go smoothly (unlikely, in my experience!). So I'll tentatively say I'm going to work on arranging and recording a heavy metal cover of an instrumental folky tune that I love.

Having said that, I have just looked at my calendar and I have at most 10 (and more likely 7) free evenings where I would be able to spend any meaningful time creating something. So what may result out of my TiMaSoMo is sweet fuck all. If I get to the halfway point of the month and realise I've not been able to dedicate the time to my craft I would like I plan to pivot towards researching and creating a system for maintaining more time in my life for unstructured, self-directed projects.

Either way, it should be a good month!

    Woop woop! I love timasomo.

Last few years I've done some metalworking stuff, this year it's coinciding neatly with a slightly woodier project I've been pondering for a while. So I shall make a charging station. The area in our kitchen where all our stuff gets charged is getting out of control, both hard to use and ugly. Not to mention our old USB power station is getting a bit underpowered for modern devices. So I'm going to build a thing to hold cables, hide (updated) electronics and provide storage for both devices during charging and the assorted crap that accumulates around such things - because despite most things charging from USB there's still plenty of assorted proprietary connectors on the other end of those usb cables!

I've already got most of what I need because I've been sort of planning/putting off this for a little while before I remembered it's nearly October. However, despite buying some bits I have done nothing more than clamp some plywood to try to make it flatter. Which is something that needs doing in advance anyway.

Last night I got a little carried away and ordered some veneer, which I've never done before, and I priced up some gold wire for inlays but I suspect that's not happening because it got quite spendy quite fast. Maybe some silver or brass will be involved though, or perhaps some gilding. The design is still coming together in my head but there will be quite a few techniques I've either never done before or only done a couple of times. No sense in making things too easy, right?

Hopeful this year of finishing, and making something both practical and beautiful. Thanks @kfwyre for hosting once again!

I missed last year's TiMaSoMo for various reasons and you'll be unsurprised to hear that the Big Block Tercel Project is still in the works and now that the Texas summer seems to have transitioned to false fall, it's time to get back to work on it. Been a minute since I posted and update on the Tercel as other projects took priority and some motivation was lost, but it has since renewed and two weeks back I repaired my engine hoist, mated the engine to the transmission, and put them in the Tercel. It's a big milestone and important step since the transmission is required to be in place for me to put the rest of the front suspension and upgraded brakes onto the car.

So my 2023 TiMaSoMo will be continued work on the Tercel, highly unlikely (read impossible) that it'll be running by the end of the month, but it would be nice if it was at least able to sit on the ground on it's own. Weather is not the only renewed motivation, the other is that my wife and I are planning to move out of Texas early next year and it'd be really nice if I could actually drive at least two of my three projects by that time instead of having to trailer them all.

It does look like I need to go take the engine/trans back out though. Was casually going through the factory service manual for proper torque settings when I happened to flip to the clutch page that discussed the throwout bearing and I am about 70% sure I didn't actually have it installed before mating the transmission to the engine and 100% sure I didn't check first. Since it'll only be more difficult to remove later, I'm going to have to remove it to check instead of hoping and finding out later.

Two steps forward, two steps back, then two more steps forward to get back to par.

We've got some ideas for themes, inspirations, game mechanics, and a couple artists we'd be interested in working with, but it's about time we got down to the nitty gritty.

A comic sounds fun - what's it about exactly, though? Not sure I understand the "Life After Dad" title.

My dad died last month. It's obviously been a rough month, though my journey's a bit different from the norm due to being neurodivergent (wrote up a long post about it already). I'm largely okay rather than actively grieving and devastated, but it's still a bit of an adjustment.

I've been playing with the idea of a light-hearted comic strip about daily life and little changes after his death. I got inspired by the fact that my dad was the cook, and my mom and I... Definitely aren't cooks. I never was, and it turns out my mom isn't as good as she thought.

I've been making a list of comic strip ideas and it's already up to 39. Just need to figure out how to draw my mom, and consider where to upload the comic.

I'm already working on making a chess engine in Godot, but given that this is very challenging for me, I expect that it will easily still take most/all of October to finish. Anyone have any thoughts regarding whether submitting this already-started project would still be in the spirit of Timasomo? I see that "all creative output must occur during" October.

    2. Hammer out a good dairy free caramel recipe. I already have a dairy free fudge recipe which I make at Christmas every year. There's also caramels, but my SO has a dairy allergy so she cannot partake, so I would like to work out a good caramel recipe. I have made previous attempts at this, but they all fell victim to various mishaps, ranging from becoming overcooked into burnt hard candy to having a fly nosedive into the cooking caramel

This will be made a little more complicated by having a week of business travel as well as a family visit at the end of the month, but I am hoping to accomplish something fun without setting too high of expectations for myself.

I'll definitely jump on a neglected conlanging project, but not sure which one. There are two that I'm probably deciding between:

    1. working on documentation for the sign language my partner and I are making together, which would involve finding a way to make it easier to work with existing tools to make SignWriting work in the documentation. Downside is that making up new signs requires my partner to be free, which obviously I can't guarantee.
    2. working on the pan-germanic orthography, particularly using inkscape to actually make the symbols rather than them all just living handwritten in my notebook.

I have always struggled with setting aside the time (or feeling like I have the energy) to do things I love- one of these is writing music and lyrics (if not instrumental) and recording them, or even song covers. Just, creative work in the music space in general. Maybe this would give me a bit of a motivation to do it.

I should always remember I can start small. An ambient tune, or maybe just a chorus or verse and really nail one of those down. Or a super short song, etc

Would love to release an album or more someday- with projects across multiple genres but after my workday and workweek, although I have the time, I rarely want to expend the mental energy necessary

We're in a similar boat apparently.

It's not that I don't have time, I have plenty, but I keep filling it with anything else besides music, despite me really wanting to make music. And when I do sit down to make music, I find something to distract me, or quit because I can't start a decent-sounding idea.

So far, my plan for Timasomo seems to be "just finish one song" which should be fairly achievable in a single month. I'll flesh out the details of whatever that's supposed to mean to give me some creative constraints and see how it goes.

I did try to write a house track last night to get some practice in, and it didn't go well. I spent 30 minutes making the bass only to end up hating it lol.

Yeah my issue is that I always take the path of least resistance (watching some media like podcasts, YT/Twitch, or listening to music) instead of anything that requires mental effort (creative output, reading, even video gaming). So I end up actively avoiding things I love doing, which just sounds maddening to me. The lack of mental energy makes me feel like I'm wasting years of life just unable to dig into other things I enjoy because I always can fall back on easier, more restful activity and shut my brain off.

I think my plan will be roughly the same. I'm purposely leaving what "one song" means loose for now until it starts to form into something. It could be a 2 minute simple instrumental track, or a simple ambient track, or even a song cover if I really struggle with original writing- as a last resort. Just going to try to put myself behind my instruments and give things the proper time and space a chance to start forming on their own and see where it leads me.

re: the house track you started on- I don't see spending 30 minutes on a bass line you don't end up liking as a bad thing- I think the success was in the creative process, not necessarily the end result- think about any musician really- for all the musicians that release 5-10 songs- imagine how many hundreds of parts, recordings, attempts, etc never got used- it's all a part of the process. by figuring out what you don't want or like to create, you're just honing what you do want to create

I guess my issue is that I don't know what I want/like to create. I listen to and enjoy so many different types of music, from classical to pop to electronic/dance to hip-hop/rap, so I feel like focusing on one genre means I won't learn to make the others, and trying to fuse them all leads nowhere because that's a complex task.

Also I feel like I don't know how to learn from my failures. When I make something I don't like, I don't know why I don't like it - I just don't like it, close the DAW and go do something else, so I don't leave with any kind of takeaway/learning opportunity from that session. I should probably learn to do some analysis on that - figure what makes me cringe exactly, and note that down so I can focus on it. (i.e. I don't like how the drums and the bass sound together - focus on mixing and sound/sample selection, or something like that, I don't have any idea)

I think over time you can hone that. I used to hate almost everything I created, but over time I slowly had some breakthroughs where I was like "oh, but i do like this" or I would record something, listen to it back and wouldn't have that cringe response (which I used to have for anything I recorded, especially vocals). I'd still be incredibly self-critical, but my ears would actually go "oh... actually this isn't half bad"- and as critical as I am - I figure if even I don't hate it, maybe that means less-critical others would like it? Who knows, haha

Usually I just tweak things to all hell until I get something I can start jamming / banging my head to, or something that just has a really nice texture or sound. Just huge experimentation, over and over again- instead of stopping when I don't like something (though guilty of that too sometimes).

I have a similar genre issue- in that, I want to write music in multiple and very different genres (synthwave, metal, rock, acoustic/singer-songwriter, piano, synthwave, ambient/electronic....etc) as different and separate projects, but not being able to focus that down makes it hard for me to really narrow what I'm working on because I have such a hard time choosing! But I prefer to go that route instead of fusing or combining them, generally. Keeping them separate at least allows me to really (once I choose one), narrow my focus into it more

I finally overcame my fear of front end development and wrote a typescript / react / electron app - a web app packaged for windows users to solve a problem I had at work, it was very simple and only took a few hours, but it was useful and I already saved time using it.

Using electron-builder I could easily make something I can share with other colleagues too!

Side note - how do I subscribe to things on tildes?

I messed up last year with a four-track EP plus art, and got half-way through. I've got a concept I'm working on for this time around, and some gear to work with that'll streamline composition, so I'm thinking of a two part EP that deals with my discomfort with large dark objects. I'll probably do some sort of vector-based art for the "cover," a picture to convey the concept/feeling, and go from there.

I'm thinking of constraining myself to two objects for the music: My Analogue Pocket with LSDJ and my Dirtywave M8. The M8 will render directly, and I've already got a process for the Analogue based on what I've done with GameBoys. The challenge, I see, is going to conveying space with a GameBoy, basically, but with the Pocket's option for lower-impedence output it adds the low-end I would need as well, and tracker magic will likely handle the rest.

I've been coding as a hobby on and off for many years. Came out of a bad state last week, my head felt clearer and I started writing code again. This time it's for a simple game.

Economic/incremental, written in Haxe. Text-only output, keyboard-only input. There will probably be a hex/square grid, rendered via characters on a console. Solely focused on code, I don't have to bother with art (for Timasomo. I'll try to keep the logic easily separable from the rendering so it can be moved to a graphics framework in future). I want to extend my old text rendering module to support the game.

I wasn't sure about joining Timasomo when I first saw the thread. Part of the hesitation was because I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the project, let alone commit to it for a whole month. But I like the momentum of the last few days and I think I want to keep it going. So I'm cheating and my project actually started a few days early.

I'm also hesitant about putting myself out there, no one else has seen my personal code projects before. But I isolate too much and hopefully this is a step towards breaking that habit. And hopefully also work through (or at least identify more of) my difficulties with writing code consistently, not overthinking and working with large projects.

But I'm also thinking of building a cat house out of all the cardboard boxes and random materials I have. I've got a new cat and I remember building one for my childhood cat as a kid and that was fun.

The challenge would be to only use materials I already have. So it might look shoddy but that's kind of the whole point. I kind of wanted to find ways to recycle.

Also, The cat won't care about aesthetics. Haha.

The other thing I'm thinking of doing is to watercolour or acrylic paint something. I've not touched it in so long.

I'm currently working on a React SPA that would've been perfect for this, but I have some finishing touches to make on it that might take about another week, and I don't want to put off finishing this to work on something else.

That said, I really want to do this!! So I'm gonna tentatively say that I'll build something else, although I'm not sure what that would be yet. A couple options are:

    • A game of Set based on some group other than Z3 (there's a lot of implementations of Projective Set already, but I only know of one app for Symmetric Set implementation, and I don't really like its UX (too many animations, the game takes too long to play; I'd also like all of the cards not in play to mirror the colors of the last-used card). So I might try to implement this. It would also require me to learn a bit about SVG; I'm not quite sure how to create the lines in the center. Do you create one line and then transform them, or create new SVGs on the fly with lines between the right places? (tbh I think it's the 2nd but not sure).
      • Anyway, so this would be like "learn a bit about svg" (and then also build a SPA)
    • Another idea I had is to build a game for learning Tailwind: The idea would be I'd randomly create divs with various properties, and then the user creates another div, and when they match it tells you & you can generate another one. I'd include whitespace, colors, rounded corners, some border styles, probably text size, margin, padding, and maybe some flex/grid setups.
      • I'm pretty sure I can get it to let me interpolate random values and create appropriate classes dynamically if in config I tell it to include no matter what the rules for every property I'm using, so that wouldn't be a problem. tbh this might end up being pretty straightforward, the harder part here is not so much technical but game design I guess.
    • Today I saw this game for learning CSS selectors. But I think it has a big problem which is that you only get one single level of "play" for each difficulty. So I'm thinking it would be cool to make something that uses regular divs and randomly generate levels so people can get more practice on a single concept before moving on.

Or maybe I'll think of something else and do that instead!
