I'd love to hear about some games that are surprisingly good, deep, or different. As in, the premise or the presentation of the game does not bode well or looks weak, but the game itself rises above those preconceptions and limitations to be greater, richer, or more interesting than you expected. Think games like: a surprisingly good movie tie-in, a really great edutainment experience, a well-executed corporate mascot platformer, etc.
What is it about the game that sets your expectations low, and how does the game overcome that low anchoring?

The second Humble Choice (the new version of Humble Monthly) is now available, with 12 choices for games this month:
- Middle-earth: Shadow of War
- Graveyard Keeper
- Two Point Hospital
- Dirt Rally 2.0 (and 3 DLCs: H2 RWD Double Pack, Opel Manta 400, The Porsche 911 RGT)
- Street Fighter V
- Bad North: Jotunn Edition
- TrailMakers
- Unrailed!
- Whispers of a Machine
- Them's Fightin' Herds
- Mages of Mystralia
- GRIP (and 1 DLC: Artifex Car Pack)
Having 12 choices this month is fairly significant, since it means that even people on the grandfathered "Classic" plan aren't able to take all the games and have to miss two of them. It seemed to be a pretty common assumption that there would always be 10 choices so Classic members would always still get everything, but that obviously isn't necessarily true.

I played VA-11 HALL-A quite a while ago and recently played ROM 2064. Both have similar aesthetics, sound, themes although they have different mechanics. I really liked how ROM had voice acting too which is a shame to say is not the case of VA-11 HALL-A but I still quite enjoyed both. 2064 perhaps more since it felt more engaged but perhaps that's just memory tricking me.
I know there's N1RV Ann-A and ROM Neurodriver coming in 2020 but well, after that, I'll still have nothing so, what games have you played which are similar?
PS : Have a happy new year and hope I've not posted in the wrong place, I'm not sure if it would've fit in the recurring topic.
