The Quest 3 is still cheaper, but VR is a niche within a niche, so I'm sure there's no lack of people who would prefer Valve's version. Compared to the Index, the pricing looks very good.

Anything Meta is a complete non starter to me after all of their privacy violations. I don't care how much cheaper the hardware might be when you're paying for it with all of your privacy

I would really like to get a Steam Frame but I will not have the money for it for a very long time, if ever.

I think most people will buy the accessories kit and charger and Valve hopes you don't realize you just spent another 90$

    IPD TARGET RANGE: 60mm - 70mm

Review embargo is also lifted, seeing reviews from... Everyone. Here's GamerNexus

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=vcerOYY_K1g

ETA: In summary: better latency than Quest 3, bit worse battery life, cooler and comfier, terrible passthrough (somewhat remediated by a 150USD addon), the arguably necessary hand and top straps are another 60USD, controller config can get convoluted fast. Of course, much better privacy than Meta. They didn't do performance benchmarks for locally played games though, just for battery testing.

Wow did they dig into Meta about their terms and how much they spy on you. Good on them. Literally every reviewer should be calling them out on it.

I've seen claims that because of the pancake style lenses, the "sweet spot" for IPD is large enough that you can be a few mm outside in either direction and still have a good experience.

    It's real! It's FINALLY here!

As much as I want one (and let me tell you, I want one real bad), I'm going to hold off. It's probably in the cards for me a few years from now, but not yet.

For one, I've already got a perfectly functioning Index setup.

For two, I generally try to avoid being an early adopter of new tech (let them iron things out first and then I'll hop on board).

For three, it's pricey (though I actually think it's genuinely great for what you get -- I paid about the same amount for my Index only a few years ago. I was expecting the Frame to be MUCH higher).

That said, I think the value proposition for someone who isn't already a VR gamer is quite high here because it also plays non-VR games. I have a pair of XReal AIR glasses that I can plug into my Steam Deck and play games on. It's, like the Steam Frame, basically just a monitor that you put on your face. I wouldn't recommend that model in particular, but the ability to lie in bed, toss the glasses on, and just game is genuinely cool and comfortable. The "isolation" of the glasses can be genuinely relaxing, as it takes me out of the real world more than just playing on my Deck does.

Rough day at work? Don't just zone out when you get home, but literally check out by isolating yourself in a tiny little headset that's your portal to a virtual world! (This, uh, makes it sound less healthy than it actually is).

The Steam Frame gives you that monitor-on-your-face experience (I promise it's better than it sounds) while also being a full-fat VR device too. The fact that it officially supports prescription lens inserts is awesome as well. I have aftermarket ones for my Index, but I consider them an essential component for anyone that wears glasses. Nice to see that they're getting first-party treatment this time around.

I should also qualify that VR is definitely one of those "it clicks for you or it doesn't" kind of things. If you're someone for whom it's got legs, then there is a ton of fun to be had (even with the somewhat stagnant development scene). The Frame is potentially worth it for you. If you tried it out and found it mostly a novelty or gimmick, then this is an easy skip (unless the idea of lying in bed while being able to see nothing but Stardew Valley across your entire field of view sounds like a good time).

One thing I can add that can help take the sting out of its pricetag is to think of it as exercise equipment. I have played hundreds of hours in Beat Saber, Synth Riders, and Pistol Whip, each of which can get my heartrate up on higher difficulties (sidenote: another essential VR purchase = headbands to catch sweat). You can technically do better exercises elsewhere, but no other exercise I've tried has been as fun as VR is.

And the best exercise is one that you enjoy doing and thus want to keep doing. My Quest and Index have paid for themselves in that regard.

Despite my resolve to not get a Steam Frame, there's a little shoulder devil that keeps trying to get me to cave:

    • It's only going to go up in price like all tech has been for years now.
    • You work hard and deserve to treat yourself once in a while.
    • That cord on your Index is REALLY annoying isn't it?
    • You could take down those tacky base stations!

I'm going to do my best to ignore him, but he's definitely got my number and is going to be persistent over the next couple of weeks and find increasingly convoluted lines of reasoning. Wish me luck. I'm going to try to "love the one I'm with" and put all that energy into my Index instead of lusting after the new hotness that is the Frame.

This announcement got me to set my Index back up.

We had some housework done earlier this year in which I had to take down my base stations and use my VR space for storage, and I never got around to getting it back up and running until now. The lighthouses are up, the clutter is cleared, and the space is reconfigured and ready for play.

I seem to have this like, VR amnesia where I forget how much fun I have playing it if I take a break for a while. After setting everything back up, I booted up Synth Riders and played my usual warm up song ("New Game" by Nitro Fun). If I were playing on a Quest 3, Meta would have had full scans of the absolutely gigantic grin I had on my face as I once again remembered just how fun it is to move and groove to a high energy bop.

It's rare that I feel genuine joy when playing a video game, but VR rhythm games do that for me.

I played for 45 minutes and fully intended to keep going a lot longer, but my session was cut short by one of my controllers dying (I didn't think to charge them while I was getting everything set up). Nevertheless, I've once again caught the VR bug, because my amnesia had me forgetting just how. much. fun. I have in the headset. I'm excited to play more this week, this weekend, next week, and so on.

It was also a nice reminder that I genuinely do NOT need a Frame right now, but it did make me excited for all the people who are considering getting one (especially if they're first-time VR players), because I want them to feel that joy too. There's genuine delight to be had in putting your full body into a game.

Alright, today I went back into Beat Saber.

This game is like a night at the club for introverts. Do you love the idea of flailing around to EDM, but you don't like crowds, hate going out, and are too uncoordinated or self-conscious to bop around in public? Beat Saber is for you.

My warmup song didn't get the telltale smile from me, but that's because it's "Bad Liar" by Imagine Dragons (don't clown on me -- the crossbody swings in the chorus are a great dynamic stretch). It's a slower tempo, more serious -- not exactly the joy-producing type of bop I usually enjoy, but great for starting out and getting my body ready for the absolutely ridiculous flailing it's about to be doing.

The following song was "Full Charge" by PIXL. I don't know how to explain this without sounding unhinged, but the song is a comedy. I genuinely find it innately funny. My headcanon for the song is that the goose from Untitled Goose Game downloaded a copy of Reason, started messing around, and found out that they were actually pretty good with it. I promise I am not making this up as a bit, and I genuinely cannot justify this explanation in any way other than to say that the song has goose energy for me.

Suffice it to say, that one got the grin going. It's fun to go full goose and flap around on beat to an audience of no one. That song was followed by many other songs which were less goose-forward but still kept the throughline of aggressive flapping. The game is a genuine blast, and it's noteworthy that I feel this way even after having played hundreds (possibly thousands?) of hours of it.

You know how some people buy an entire console just to play CoD or FIFA? Rhythm games are like that for me for VR. I'll occasionally dabble in others, but those are the ones I always come back to and that get the vast bulk of my playtime.

This isn't to say that VR rhythm games are for everyone. They're very much a niche within a niche, and I'm saying this not because I think everyone's going to get the joy from these games that I do (I don't think many will). Instead, I'm speaking to that thin slice of people for whom rhythm games spark something inside and who haven't yet gotten into VR. If you grew up playing DDR at the mall, or if Guitar Hero was your jam, or if you even know what osu! is, then VR might be worth a look.

I don't recommend running out and buying a Frame, as it will be a very expensive paperweight if you don't end up liking it. But, if you're able, visit a friend or borrow a headset and try Beat Saber out (they will almost certainly have it -- it's the Super Mario 64 of VR headsets). See if that "click" happens for you. If it does, then dropping the megabucks for something like a Frame could be worth it.

I’m tentatively looking forward to the Steam Frame…if I make it onto the list to get one.

I had an Oculus Riff (I think the first commercially available one), and played a lot of beatsaber in college with it (I’d set it up in one of the common areas in the dorm no one was using, or my living room, and me and some friends would play).

But post college, it’s been too much of a pain to set up given it required trackers, and a 20 ft HDMI cable (and the required Meta/Facebook integration), and the space needed (I’d have to shuffle my computer in and out of the living room in my apartment). And then I never bought anything wireless bc they were too expensive at the time.

But I really should exercise more, and I could see the Steam Frame helping me get around to doing that.

Good news, maybe! The bit at the start where you might suck at it is also the bit where you’ll make the most physical progress! By the time you’re actually good at it, your muscles will have developed (in both power and precision) enough to be much more efficient because of all the practice, but therefore your future gains might plateau by then

I can ride a motorcycle, I lkve manual transmission in cars, I can do stuff with my legs and hands that must be precise enough yet do different motions at one time, but when it comes to music, I suck.

I hope Beat Saber helps me with that. I like the concept, I like the tech behind it, I like that it was made by Czech studio (I'm Czech) and it is worldwide recognized just as well as Průša 3D printers. It all clicks with me, now just to play it and, if possible, get good at it. Or at least decent.

My only VR experience is the Quest 3 and the hand and finger tracking is okay, I can type on the air keyboard if I go slow, but I’d love a more reliable option (maybe even full body tracking?) if it was easy to set up and not too expensive.

When I first got my Index I had two base stations. The tracking worked great unless one/both of them was occluded, at which point there were noticeable issues. I ended up buying an extra one and setting them up in a triangle around me, with the idea that if I'm body blocking one of them, then the other two can make up for it.

It works really well in the center of the play area (where they're all pointed) but can get worse near the edges, as I can easily block one/two while going underneath the coverage area of another, dropping me down to one or zero active stations.

I love the hybrid idea. Being able to improve my tracking on the Index simply by adding a base station was really cool (and I could keep doing it if I really wanted to -- 4 or 5 base stations would be unstoppable!). It would be great if the Frame could take advantage of that as well and use base stations to supplement for when inside-out tracking isn't the greatest.

That said, inside-out tracking is definitely the future, because having to have base stations set up is a non-starter for a lot of people. It means your VR usage is locked to a specific area, and running power to them can be difficult. Add to this the fact that they look like cameras and anyone who's not familiar with VR setups can get suspicious around them (understandably so).

Yes, I will not play hundred games in VR, but I'm absolutely sure, I will play tons of Beat Saber and Puzzling Places. Probably to the point of actually not having time for any other VR game.

But I will get a few more games for VR, even if tgey are not VR-only. These will be Myst&Riven, Talos Principle VR and I will certainly, in some more distant future - because of money - do some driving/racing gaming, likely simulator type including wheel and pedals.

VR is still niche though. It has quite some support and some really good usage options, but it's still niche.

Yeah, I was pissed a bit when I read that yesterday. But you knwo what? I don't care. I believe the game is great and the money is well spent even though it may have been for free woth the headset. I bought it quite a while back.

But maybe I will get the free copy. I have entered twice - once from my own account and once from daughter's. And daughter doesn't have the game. If Valvw picks her as a Frame "winner", we, as a family, might end up with second Alyx for free.

My guess is we are not getting frame in the firat wave though. I know personally a bit too much people who want it, this makes my projections go.into millions of interested people worldwide and I'm guessing Valve will have like tens of thousands units for first wave...

but it still doesn't really solve the chicken and egg problem that the VR gaming landscape is barren as fuck.

By now I feel quite confident that the problem isn’t implementation, it’s the concept of VR in general. This might have something to do with people talking about games as if they were generally simulating a physical presence when, in fact, they’re mostly more abstract. The number of genres that need to simulate physical presence is in the single digits and even there the limitations are real (moving in a straight line, for example). Most games have way more abstract input.

Over 1000 EUR for this, 2000+ EUR for the iPhone duo, I can’t remember how much for the steam machine… I guess not everyone is feeling the job market squeeze and the AI threat. Or maybe it’s rather a “let’s enjoy it while it last and before the world ends” type of consumerism? I find it hard to reconcile the price of these things with the ambiant sentiment that inflation is too high, rent is too expensive, there are no jobs and they pay shit. Or maybe I’m just jealous of those who are seemingly not impacted?

It really does kind of feel like the world is ending, doesn't it? Or at least the status quo. The world will just adapt, same as it always does.

Part of the status quo was this illusion that we were all the same. That we all had the same kind of car more or less, the same phone, the same home, the same family, the same neighborhood, and so on. But we don't. They may run the same basic applications but there's substantive differences between the iPhone Pro Max and the iPhone SE, or else they wouldn't bother to make them. And now they're making the Duo because they have more differentiation to make for people who have even more money.

Frankly I don't think that the iPhone Duo or the Steam Frame are overpriced for what they are or what they do. I think they're actually pretty good values, no less. What I see as a greater problem is that people at large - the laboring class - are given a continually shrinking part of the economy in spite of, you know, creating that economy in the first place. Or, like you mentioned, that speculation on a particular part of technology has allowed a segment of industry to dominate the economy in a way that could possibly destroy everyone's wellbeing.

I don't know, we're just in weird, kind of bad times. Maybe focus on the good things in your life instead?

I saved for Frame. I believed they can do the cheaper one for under 900€, but here we are.

iPhone Duo us a showpiece, as all the foldables are. Steam Machine is someghing like a "console PC" - if you don't have a (gaming) PC and just want to play, that's it. Steam Frame is quite open VR headset that does a bit more than others.

iPhone Duo is actually good for just a handful of people, others will have it as their status piece. Steam Frame is for interrsted people. Stram Machine could actually be one that will get most (actually using it) customers.

They are all expensive, tgey are all not for everyone. But when you want one of those, you sure have to save for it.

Well, I want Frame for Beat Saber as an exercise, for Puzzling Places as unbelievable relax, I will surely play Alyx - as it seems to be the peak, as you said - and Talos Principle, which looked great in 2D and I can't wait to see it in VR, even though it may not be that great to control. I would love to play some Assetto Corsa or American/European Truck Simulator in VR as well! And maybe/probably use it as a big picture monitor.

I imagine there are not many really good truly VR-only games, but that's not what I'm actually buying it for. But I will try a few.

Yes, it seems good. But I was on the fence about getting a Big screen Beyond 2 before (I love how it's light, form fitting and clear the optics are!) but I waited for the steam frame in hopes the display would be good enough to make the choose clear, especially since the frame is wireless first.

But it sounds like it's... Fine?
In my experience, the screen door effect and especially field of view are HUGE in VR. And it sounds like the frame is fine, but it's not comparable to the industry leaders. And also LCD!

So I dunno. I think I'm going to yet again continue to keep my money until someone releases basically a wireless big screen beyond. If that ever happens lol.

For my own curiosity, have you tried any of the headsets yet? I managed to try out the Vive at the Penny Arcade Expo and in the loud environment I was still able to get immersed and so I waited and purchased an Index and I found that the gap did not bother me at all. I know where are also countless accessories to help blot out light and help contain or make it more comfortable too. Not trying to promote one way or another as I am also interested in the bigscreen but the inclusion of useage for more people is kind of a killer point for myself when you need specific molds(not to even get into the space needed for people with glasses)

I played Elite Dangerous with a Oculus DK2 and that thing was like taping a calculator screen to your eyeballs. But yes I loved it.
I've tried the DK2, Rift, Index, one of the quests, and most importantly the pimax 5 and 8k supers.

Now honestly, the pimax headsets have shit software/firmware. They are crazy heavy, uncomfortable and I've had various hardware failures over the years. But the clarity and field of view is just so good. I try other headsets and it's like using an IPhone from 2012.

I am sure I've spoilt myself. But there is a future headset one day that will do it, I'm sure.
