Somehow a well designed high-school course that deeply impresses the student on the relationship between math, algorithm, syntax, structure is then succeeded (at University) by either a dry application-oriented syllabus or a Theorem-proof hall of mirrors. My username is the same username I use just about everywhere, including (almost) my driver's license. I am a dad, husband, coder, game enthusiast (board and video, with the former being a slight preference), sports-er, guy who makes things. I'm 40, with a great big beard, and you would probably think of the word "jolly" if we hung out.
If I was to create a group, it would either be about beer and beer appreciation, or about disc golf. I'm a big beer fan, though I've greatly reduced how much I drink, since I try to drink zero calories, or close to zero calories. I also enjoy throwing things, specifically round, disc shaped things, though I'll also happily throw a football, or play catch with a baseball, or similar. Came here as I was just looking for a less toxic Reddit alternative/one where the owner isn't a closed-minded, egotistical libertarian.
My username is my name. Any website/service/etc that requires me to setup an account, I always try my name first. If it's taken, I just think of other simple-ish words that probably aren't taken (e.g. on Github I got "Thumb"). In the event everything good is taken, I'll often resort to childish humor like "PoopyButtFartz69".
A group that reflects my interests would probably be horror/horror gaming. My wife and I met through our mutual love of horror on OKCupid. Since then we've gone through (what my admittedly snobbish standards consider) every decent horror movie/tv show and video game we can find. We don't do "slasher" movies really, and avoid anything with just torture/gore porn, or sexual assault. We're more about the ghosts, demons, paranormal, etc.-- there's just more unpredictability as far as we're concerned. Nowadays I'll settle for a "nugget" of a good moment in a movie, even if the rest of the movie is garbage, but I'm always chasing that constant high. The last great horror game I played start to finish was SOMA, P.T. was a great short game that was the last experience that left my with my hands shaking and knees turned to jelly when I stood up. Hereditary was the last horror movie that left me breathless and feeling constant dread throughout. I loved it.
Anyways, outside of that I'm as square as square can be: I don't drink (just makes me sleepy), don't smoke weed (sleepy and dizzy -- mind you, I don't judge anyone for indulging in either), I'm vegetarian, not religious, we're not having kids (maybe foster/adopt when we're able), and have a hard time making close friends on account part of me doesn't want to, and I just don't click with most of the people I meet through my hobbies; the older I get, the more people center their lives around their kids and/or hanging around others with kids if not drinking. Board games has been where it's at. I just go to local board game meet ups and play whatever's there.

Have you watched "As Above, So Below"? I recently rewatched it and liked it much better on my rewatch. There are definitely some jump scares, but I enjoyed it. I liked Hereditary; the relatively slow buildup to the horrific last 10 minutes was well worth it.

So curious to see how that goes. I've tried getting into Arkham Horror's Card Game and I myself enjoy it, but haven't set aside the time to really get familiar with it and play it regularly.
Other horror games I've enjoyed are Letters From White Chapel, and Escape from the Aliens In Outer Space (with the variant that dead humans become aliens).
I remember thinking "As Above, So Below" was just OK but my wife loved it and I recall her saying the same as you, that there's details you can pick up better on a re-watch. I think for me, personally, The Taking of Deborah Logan raised my found footage horror standards, as I didn't know what to expect with that movie and went in completely blind and loved it. I'm sure if I re-watch it now it'll have lost some of the magic.

I'm a fellow human being from France, and my line of work is in software engineering. I know! - how original! I like photography, drawing and coding. My current hobby is simracing. The music genres I mainly listen to are synthwave, synthpop, with some additional vaporwave, industrial and chiptune every so often. I love movies like Akira, Citizenfour and Arrival. I'm just cruising through life at the moment, trying to be a better person and a better friend.
Disillusioned by the rampant bigotry and circlejerks of reddit, I quit using the site some 3 years ago but I still longed for something with a similar website format. When Tildes appeared on my radar through one of the alternatives to reddit list, I asked for an invite and got in.
My username doesn't have a happy backstory behind it I'm afraid to say. I have been struggling with depression for some years now and when I looked for a new nickname that described me, I could only reference the emptiness I felt inside and how it often left me staring blankly at the world. Don't worry, those feelings have largely subsided. Only the username remains :)

Who or what brought you to Tildes? I heard about Tildes for the first time on Hacker News very recently. I just checked and I've been a Reddit user since mid-2008 (wow, that's a long time!). There are still several high-quality subreddits around, like r/flicks and r/LetsTalkMusic, but many subreddits have failed to maintain quality at scale, and niche subreddits focused on quality often fail to thrive. I became a somewhat regular Hacker News browser a few years ago and I enjoy the posts a lot, but the comment section is often full of armchair expertise and has grown grumpier over time.
What's the inspiration behind your username? It's the first two letters of my first name followed by my full last name and it was my automatically-assigned school username throughout K-12. At some point I assumed that this would be a common pattern everywhere on the web and by the time I learned otherwise, danturkel and dturkel were surprisingly already taken in lots of places, so I stuck with daturkel. I assume people read it as "dat Urkel".

I'm a (disillusioned) teacher in the US, a married gay guy with a house and dog (living the queer millennial dream!), and I like to spend my time reading, playing games, and typing up really lengthy comments here on Tildes. I post a lot of ask threads because I like hearing other people's responses, and I've run a couple of "events" here on Tildes (and will continue to do so in the future). I have a tendency to bloviate in my comments a bit, and I'm often torn between posting something that's overdone but meaningful to me or editing it down so that it's more digestible to others. I don't know that I've adequately found that balance yet, but I'm working on it.
Who or what brought you to Tildes?
I was done with pretty much everywhere else on the internet after 2016. Too much meanness, outrage, and venom everywhere. I value kindness over pretty much everything else, and the internet was seemingly completely inundated with unkindness. I kept an eye out for new social network sites, but a lot of them were either too focused on a specific thing or didn't really get off the ground. Tildes had great ideals and enough user momentum for me to want to give it a shot, and I've been happy here ever since. It's the only social media site, of any kind, that I use.
What's the inspiration behind your username?
It comes from Wyre, a map for the game Killing Floor. The map names in the game are given the "KF-" prefix, so Wyre is "KF-Wyre", and I dropped the capitals and hyphen for (what I consider to be) better aesthetics.
Interestingly enough, Wyre is far from my favorite map in the game, but I mostly just liked how the letters worked together. My original plan for this particular online identity was for it to be less of a forum-y name and more of a penname (i.e. "K. F. Wyre") but my attempts at blogging and a person-esque online identity using this name never really landed, and instead I ended up here, on Tildes, in all lower-case. I'm happy with the trade.
I should also qualify that Killing Floor is pretty far outside the realm of how I would usually choose to portray myself. I don't particularly love violent videogames; I don't love horror or gore; I don't really play many first-person shooters in general. It's just that the co-op multiplayer aspect of the game as well as its great gameplay hooked me. My friend group and I have lots of fun memories and friend-group memes from our many hours playing together. That said, I picked my username less for its association with Killing Floor and more just because those particular letters clicked with me. Also I think it's fun to try to pronounce ("kuh-FWHY-er").

I loved, loved, LOVED KF1, and I only liked KF2. To this day I don't know if that's because KF1 is legitimately the better game or if it's because I started with it and thus played out the zombie horde formula across my hundreds of hours in the game.
If I could best summarize how I feel, it would be that KF1 felt like something special, whereas KF2 felt like something normal. There isn't anything wrong with normal, but it doesn't hold a particular place in my gaming heart.

In Australia, Ibis's have a reputation for being pests. Some people call them bin chickens (which I find hilarious). So my username is a mix of a books influence, a self-deprecating joke, and genuine affection for a bird that's kind of an underdog around here.

Hi, I'm a 14 year old Brazilian who learned 'perfect' English via extensively watching English YouTube during my childhood.
I originally found out about this site when reddit announced user following and someone pitched tildes as a better platform. I was pretty curious and after looking at the site spending a few weeks lurking and wondering if I could bring the 'high quality discussion' tildes is built on according to the tildes blog and convince the person handing me the invite too. After convincing myself, I joined and have been here ever since.
I decided instead of using a really boring username like my Reddit, YouTube and Twitch usernames I would be creative and come up with a username I found cool, so I picked Kuromantis with not much real or fictional inspiration really. I just wanted a original username.
If I could add a new group it would definitely be ~spec/~speculation. I really like asking questions about the future and have always been interested in alternate history and predictions of the future.

I read the Tildes doc and saw reference to the paradox of intolerance and decided to give it a go and have splitting time between here (general stuff) and reddit (mostly image-based content like /r/tattoos and /r/gardening, but they also have some really good enviro subreddits) ever since.

Most my usernames are riffs off my extremely common first name "Michael" (its was top 5 most common boys names in the US for like a decade). Usually based around one of two jokes: "If bike is short for bicycle, does that mean Mike is short for Micycle" and "If Nick is short for Nicholas, what if Mick was short for Micholas. Like Micholas Mouse or Jolly Ol' Saint Micholas". I just happened to choose the bicycle joke when signing up for tildes :)

Also, I haven't read in a bit and my brain is getting...uh...dumber, so maybe I wouldn't be ready for that anyhow.

I think I hit the random button on the Reddit homepage and ended up on the Tildes subreddit. From there, I saw I missed out on an invite wave and directly emailed deimos with my personal email and name, included a little 'About Me', and asked for a code. My motivations are that I am tired of reading and being a part of the collective reddit consciousness. When you read a comment chain on reddit, unless you are in a small community, you don't see a back and forth conversation between people. Instead you see a top level comment, then someone's reply, then another person's reply, and then another random person's reply, and so forth until there isn't any real meaning to the conversation.
The promise of good, high-quality discussion is tempting for me and the future plans for tildes leaves me hopeful. I hope the trust system comes out sooner rather than later and the site culture matures as a result of it.

I think I had a copy of Kid Icarus for the 3DS near me and just used that. My username isn't tied to any part of "me". Makes it easier to let it go when the time for a new account rolls around.

One of my favorite subreddits is /r/wholesomememes and I think having a dedicated space where people are nice to each other would be...nice. Don't get me wrong, Tildes is a step up from Reddit in a lot of ways. In other ways though, comment chains are overly pedantic and don't discuss the topic but rather an author's choice of words. Sometimes responses to comments here are overly critical or judgmental of other users.
If I had a vision for the site culture, it would be a kind college professor. Knowledgeable but forgiving of mistakes. Open to learning new things, hearing and sharing perspective, and understanding that there isn't always a correct answer.

I haven't deleted my reddit account as I still find the site to be very useful, but I have been disillusioned with the community since day one (12+ years ago?) and with the administration for the past five years or so. I haven't deleted an account on anything since Myspace but I have definitely stopped using a bunch of websites and hope that reddit can be among them one day.

Like a few others here, it's based on my first and last name and I have used it wherever possible for the last 15 years or so. Unfortunately it seems to be popular so sometimes it's taken and I have to mix it up; I'm a bit jealous of those who have "universal" web names but I guess I've bought myself some plausible deniability so it's not the worst.

A ~policy group would be nice. I was considering if it should be a group with subgroups in every domain - education, housing, health, tech, etc. - or if there should just be supgroups under each area e.g. ~education.policy. There are definitely articles or points of discussion that cut across policy interest areas, though, so I think it could merit a group of its own. And who the hell is just going to be hanging out in the theoretical ~housing looking for policy articles, anyway?
As a side note, if anyone here works in tech policy or has a serious interest in the field, please reach out! I'm just now starting to get involved in the space and would love to make some friends with the same interest.

I eventually quit reddit completely for about 1 month and a half, but got back into it when I became unemployed. I found a new job now but have yet to again quit reddit.

I had recently watched Twin Peaks The Return, and learned about tulpas. Theyre a Buddhist spirit, that can be willed into existence by intense focused meditiation. Essentially an imaginary friend, or enemy or whatever. I thought a willed Wendigo would be a cool interplay of the 2 things.

The fact that the UI is small and fast and snappy appealed to me, and the community didn't seem toxic yet, so I thought I'd join in and see how long that lasts.
My username is my real first name. That name was originally my middle name; my parents gave me a first name that literally translates to "man", and a middle name that they mistakenly thought was the more-commonly-masculine spelling (which is actually "Lee"). Since I turned out to not be a man after all, it worked out well in the end anyway. I'd considered others, but Leigh felt like it was already me, and while it's not the coolest name out there (you can almost always tell when someone is transgender, because we generally have way cooler names than cis folks) I didn't find anything else that fit.
I honestly don't have a good answer for the last one. My interests in things like tech and games are generally slightly different to what typically gets posted in generalist spaces on those topics, but I'm not sure how to draw a line around it and give it a name.

Deimos's Reddit account led me to tildes in a creepy way. I was stalking his Reddit account for some info about a project he did, and found posts talking about this site. The more I read, the more I felt it was the perfect website. Centralized, free software license (AGPL3) with a solid, acceptable free speech philosophy (don't be an asshole, with a definition of what constitutes an asshole). I emailed the appropriate tildes.net address as soon as I finished reading the documentation. Got led in, and frankly have valued every second spent here.
As far as centralization, I basically didn't understand how federation worked, and still see the fediverse as hard to make a mass market thing, but see value in a donation-driven website that is run and developed by it's users, as opposed to a profit-driven closed platform. I think the licensing of the platform is more important than any protocol because with social media the site matters more. Just look at Mastodon.social.
My username was an uncreative tweak on "Loch Ness Monster." It's a less used name, and I played a lot of TF2 when I coined the handle, and frankly like it, so I use it or a variation for anything that isn't a brand I release creative works under.

I'm coming here as a lobsters refugee, it started getting toxic and weird. People were saying "no politics" when they really meant "no articles that disagree with my bias". There was a large influx of new assholes who were "anti pc" aka they wanted the right to be a jerk to people and not get any push back about it.
My name comes from voronoi potato, which is what I thought a potato looked like under a microscope, however at the time I may have been thinking about an onion, the name stuck nontheless. If I was to add a new group it might actually be a subgroup to comp for the intersection of mathematics and programming. I'm an amateur at best but I like reading about it!
I've been reading Turtle Geometry, and I really think a lot gets lost at the intersection of mathematics and programming in university curricula. Somehow a well designed high-school course that deeply impresses the student on the relationship between math, algorithm, syntax, structure is then succeeded (at University) by either a dry application-oriented syllabus or a Theorem-proof hall of mirrors. Only an internet community could offer relieving middle ground.

I was brought to Tildes by Deimos, relatively early in Tildes' lifespan (I believe I was user #24). My username is the same username I use just about everywhere, including (almost) my driver's license. I am a dad, husband, coder, game enthusiast (board and video, with the former being a slight preference), sports-er, guy who makes things. I'm 40, with a great big beard, and you would probably think of the word "jolly" if we hung out.
If I was to create a group, it would either be about beer and beer appreciation, or about disc golf. I'm a big beer fan, though I've greatly reduced how much I drink, since I try to drink zero calories, or close to zero calories. I also enjoy throwing things, specifically round, disc shaped things, though I'll also happily throw a football, or play catch with a baseball, or similar. I'm happy to discuss the current roster of professional disc golfers at any point, though almost nobody I've ever met actually cares about the sport.

I assume also the one who mods /r/wow. That guy and the other mods currently running the show helped to bring the subreddit back from a dark place after Nitesmoke almost drove it to the ground five years ago.
For those uninformed about what happened, the subreddit's former lead mod threw a temper tantrum and locked down the subreddit because he was unable to log in on the first week of Warlords of Draenor's launch. This prompted a backlash that got Blizzard's community managers and even Reddit's admins involved. While Reddit staff almost never intervene in subreddit politics, they demodded Nitesmoke and instated Aphoenix as the lead mod.
Yup, that's me.
Fun fact, they only demodded Nitesmoke for saying that he wanted us to make a charitable donation in return for stepping down as a moderator, not because of any other action.
And Nitesmoke is still around on his alt, and occasionally makes third person comments about himself, and how that mod tried to warn us years ago about blizzard, and the people crucified him. It's actually fairly entertaining.

I'm hopeful that the new changes there are worthwhile. It already feels a lot better to me, and I'll continue to look at next steps. Crazy time of year for it; I've been super busy.
Anyways, outside of that I'm as square as square can be: I don't drink (just makes me sleepy), don't smoke weed (sleepy and dizzy -- mind you, I don't judge anyone for indulging in either), I'm vegetarian, not religious, we're not having kids (maybe foster/adopt when we're able), and have a hard time making close friends on account part of me doesn't want to, and I just don't click with most of the people I meet through my hobbies; the older I get, the more people center their lives around their kids and/or hanging around others with kids if not drinking. Board games has been where it's at. I just go to local board game meet ups and play whatever's there.
Do you enjoy any horror board games? I used to play a fair amount of Arkham Horror with my siblings and some friends, and enjoyed it a lot. We also loved Dead of Winter for a while.
Have you watched "As Above, So Below"? I recently rewatched it and liked it much better on my rewatch. There are definitely some jump scares, but I enjoyed it. I liked Hereditary; the relatively slow buildup to the horrific last 10 minutes was well worth it.
It's really hard not to once you have them running around! People really have to work to maintain non-child related hobbies.
I love Dead of Winter. I've been wanting to rope in two other players to our games after I learned that it can accommodate six players, testers just thought there was too much dead-time (heh) between turns. So curious to see how that goes. I've tried getting into Arkham Horror's Card Game and I myself enjoy it, but haven't set aside the time to really get familiar with it and play it regularly.
Other horror games I've enjoyed are Letters From White Chapel, and Escape from the Aliens In Outer Space (with the variant that dead humans become aliens).
I've also made a horror-themed board game playlist that I play as background music for just such occasions.
I remember thinking "As Above, So Below" was just OK but my wife loved it and I recall her saying the same as you, that there's details you can pick up better on a re-watch. I think for me, personally, The Taking of Deborah Logan raised my found footage horror standards, as I didn't know what to expect with that movie and went in completely blind and loved it. I'm sure if I re-watch it now it'll have lost some of the magic.

I'm a fellow human being from France, and my line of work is in software engineering. I know! - how original! I like photography, drawing and coding. My current hobby is simracing. The music genres I mainly listen to are synthwave, synthpop, with some additional vaporwave, industrial and chiptune every so often. I love movies like Akira, Citizenfour and Arrival. I'm just cruising through life at the moment, trying to be a better person and a better friend.
Disillusioned by the rampant bigotry and circlejerks of reddit, I quit using the site some 3 years ago but I still longed for something with a similar website format. When Tildes appeared on my radar through one of the alternatives to reddit list, I asked for an invite and got in.
My username doesn't have a happy backstory behind it I'm afraid to say. I have been struggling with depression for some years now and when I looked for a new nickname that described me, I could only reference the emptiness I felt inside and how it often left me staring blankly at the world. Don't worry, those feelings have largely subsided. Only the username remains :)
Honestly I wouldn't really want other groups per se. However, even if it wouldn't really be in the spirit of this website, I wonder how a French group might behave.

Who or what brought you to Tildes? I heard about Tildes for the first time on Hacker News very recently. I just checked and I've been a Reddit user since mid-2008 (wow, that's a long time!). There are still several high-quality subreddits around, like r/flicks and r/LetsTalkMusic, but many subreddits have failed to maintain quality at scale, and niche subreddits focused on quality often fail to thrive. I became a somewhat regular Hacker News browser a few years ago and I enjoy the posts a lot, but the comment section is often full of armchair expertise and has grown grumpier over time.

comp.python. I haven't really found a suitable forum for discussion of Python not geared towards beginners. The volume of educational resources for Python is part of what's made it such a successful language, but it would be nice to have a dedicated venue for "practitioners" to discuss best practices, new libraries, what they're working on, and so on.The intent is that something like comp.python will emerge as there's enough python-specific content that it needs its own home away from the more general comp. Be the python you want to see in the world, and it'll happen.
I first heard about Tildes on Reddit, and when I commented showing interest, Deimos was kind enough to send me an invitation. While I still enjoy certain aspects of Reddit, I find Tildes to be a bit more intimate, and the conversations more reflective and insightful. Not so much clamouring for attention.

I can't think of anything to add, as I am enjoying everything presented. As a fairly computer illiterate person, I find the technological discussions here are done so clearly that I am beginning to understand them. And I can ask questions without feeling like an idiot, which is nice. Good place, good people.

I'm a (disillusioned) teacher in the US, a married gay guy with a house and dog (living the queer millennial dream!), and I like to spend my time reading, playing games, and typing up really lengthy comments here on Tildes. I post a lot of
askthreads because I like hearing other people's responses, and I've run a couple of "events" here on Tildes (and will continue to do so in the future). I have a tendency to bloviate in my comments a bit, and I'm often torn between posting something that's overdone but meaningful to me or editing it down so that it's more digestible to others. I don't know that I've adequately found that balance yet, but I'm working on it.I was done with pretty much everywhere else on the internet after 2016. Too much meanness, outrage, and venom everywhere. I value kindness over pretty much everything else, and the internet was seemingly completely inundated with unkindness. I kept an eye out for new social network sites, but a lot of them were either too focused on a specific thing or didn't really get off the ground. Tildes had great ideals and enough user momentum for me to want to give it a shot, and I've been happy here ever since. It's the only social media site, of any kind, that I use.
It comes from Wyre, a map for the game Killing Floor. The map names in the game are given the "KF-" prefix, so Wyre is "KF-Wyre", and I dropped the capitals and hyphen for (what I consider to be) better aesthetics.
Interestingly enough, Wyre is far from my favorite map in the game, but I mostly just liked how the letters worked together. My original plan for this particular online identity was for it to be less of a forum-y name and more of a penname (i.e. "K. F. Wyre") but my attempts at blogging and a person-esque online identity using this name never really landed, and instead I ended up here, on Tildes, in all lower-case. I'm happy with the trade.
I should also qualify that Killing Floor is pretty far outside the realm of how I would usually choose to portray myself. I don't particularly love violent videogames; I don't love horror or gore; I don't really play many first-person shooters in general. It's just that the co-op multiplayer aspect of the game as well as its great gameplay hooked me. My friend group and I have lots of fun memories and friend-group memes from our many hours playing together. That said, I picked my username less for its association with Killing Floor and more just because those particular letters clicked with me. Also I think it's fun to try to pronounce ("kuh-FWHY-er").

I'm so glad that you asked! We have a Tildes Game Gifting Group on Steam that I run that many of the new people to the site might be interested in! You do not have to give away any games to join (it's totally fine if you only are interested in getting them), and we're probably going to have our next gifting event in the coming weeks. How did you feel about Killing Floor 2? Killing Floor 1 is probably in my list of top 10 games due to similar reasons you listed but I couldn't get into 2.
Killing Floor 2 is... fine? Like, the pieces are all there and I enjoyed my time with it, but it feels like there's some magic missing from it that the first had. I loved, loved, LOVED KF1, and I only liked KF2. To this day I don't know if that's because KF1 is legitimately the better game or if it's because I started with it and thus played out the zombie horde formula across my hundreds of hours in the game.
If I could best summarize how I feel, it would be that KF1 felt like something special, whereas KF2 felt like something normal. There isn't anything wrong with normal, but it doesn't hold a particular place in my gaming heart.
I think I share the same sentiments.
KF1 just oozed charm and community and quirkiness. KF2 felt overly baked. By all means, KF2 isn't a bad game, I just think it was overly polished, if that could be a thing. Think I found it through Reddit or Hackernews, and decided to sign-up once I read Deimos's 'design docs' and thought he was proposing changes to the 'Reddit model' that would improve discussion and community.
What's the inspiration behind your username?
For some reason I wanted a unique nickname for Github and Twitter, when I first started programming. I had recently misheard a George Constanza line as "Anything goes. It's Thundergolf!". Amused by imagining what "Thundergolf" would be, I googled it and got basically nothing. Shortly after decided it was decent enough to become my online moniker 🤷♂️.
If you could add a group to Tildes to reflect your interests, which one would you choose and why?
It would be one centred around living the kind of good life that Peter Singer and William McAskill promote. I've been inspired by the way William lives his life adhering to the radicalism of simple truths, and would like a subcommunity of people trying to acheive the same kind of ethics.
In Australia, Ibis's have a reputation for being pests. Some people call them bin chickens (which I find hilarious). A few years back there was a grass roots movement to vote in the Ibis as the Guardian's bird of the year, but a local breakfast radio host unfairly used his influence to get votes for the magpie. So my username is a mix of a books influence, a self-deprecating joke, and genuine affection for a bird that's kind of an underdog around here.
I’m a software developer currently living in the American Rockies, though I’ve been trying to find a way out of my city and industry without burning bridges. My hobbies include hiking, starting and abandoning programming projects, cooking, tea, and the passive voice. I’ve recently become an agnostic atheist, and am in the process of going public with family.
My username on Reddit is fish related, so I decided to continue the theme. I came here because of the proposed moderation model. I also dislike how discussions on Reddit feel impersonal; almost like a competitive Fake Internet Point slot machine. After being here a while, I’ve come to appreciate how the lack of memes focuses discussion on the topic and not the slot machine.
I don’t have any suggestions for new groups; each group I think of is better as a tag (eg nature, spirituality).

I am brand new, I was lead here through a r/dataisbeautiful post about r/drama banning r/teenagers posters and revealing the amount of grown men harassing teens and faking being teens. Like I knew about the jailbait thing and in general the whole massive amount of online predators, but something about this one just hit a little harder. So in this comment chain on this awful post someone mentioned an alternative, and someone else was like it's the dude who made the AutoModerator. I clicked on links and sent an email and here I am, not 24 hrs later and really into it.
What's the inspiration behind your username?
In leaving Reddit I wanted to leave that one behind, TrixieLee is a better spelling of my OG handle back in the days of dialup and Barbie.com. One of my dad's bar buddies called me Trixie Lee growing up and my dad carried it on, probs to piss off mom and here I am dusting it off again.

Hi, I'm a 14 year old Brazilian who learned 'perfect' English via extensively watching English YouTube during my childhood.
I originally found out about this site when reddit announced user following and someone pitched tildes as a better platform. I was pretty curious and after looking at the site spending a few weeks lurking and wondering if I could bring the 'high quality discussion' tildes is built on according to the tildes blog and convince the person handing me the invite too. After convincing myself, I joined and have been here ever since.
I decided instead of using a really boring username like my Reddit, YouTube and Twitch usernames I would be creative and come up with a username I found cool, so I picked Kuromantis with not much real or fictional inspiration really. I just wanted a original username.
If I could add a new group it would definitely be ~spec/~speculation. I really like asking questions about the future and have always been interested in alternate history and predictions of the future.

Mostly boredom. I found the content on reddit outside of topic-specific subreddits (/r/tattoos, /r/gardening, /r/<sportsteam>) to be really stale, I was sick of looking at comment sections full of defending racism and sexism and the general "I'm going to be shitty because free speech means I can" attitude of most discussions. I read the Tildes doc and saw reference to the paradox of intolerance and decided to give it a go and have splitting time between here (general stuff) and reddit (mostly image-based content like /r/tattoos and /r/gardening, but they also have some really good enviro subreddits) ever since.

Most my usernames are riffs off my extremely common first name "Michael" (its was top 5 most common boys names in the US for like a decade). Usually based around one of two jokes: "If bike is short for bicycle, does that mean Mike is short for Micycle" and "If Nick is short for Nicholas, what if Mick was short for Micholas. Like Micholas Mouse or Jolly Ol' Saint Micholas". I just happened to choose the bicycle joke when signing up for tildes :)

Probably nothing because most the content I'm interested in either doesn't fit with Tildes (see most of why I use reddit still) or fits other groups. Mostly I just want more non-computer topics. I was a CS major but I minored in religious studies so I like reading and talking about that, I like reading about history, I am really passionate about environmentalism, workers rights/human rights, and public transportation. Mostly you'll see me posting something about one of those things or about how _____ is an example of racism. So get excited for that.

I think the subcommunities already here cover a lot of ground. Maybe a ~literature to contain snob conversation. See /r/books vs /r/literature. Though I don't think the user-base is large enough to warrant the distinction just yet. Also, I haven't read in a bit and my brain is getting...uh...dumber, so maybe I wouldn't be ready for that anyhow.
Oh, also a ~guitar would be nice. I feel like there's only a couple of other guitarists on here, so probably not necessary at the moment.

Trudging along. I feel like I have more to offer a work environment, but not the necessary résumé to back it up. Or portfolio. I should start working on this soon, though, as it seems that I may need to find a new job in the near future.

I'm a very, very cautious social media user, thanks to paranoia left over from BBS days (yes, I'm one of the older cranks). The only place I had a significant presence recently was G+, and we've all seen how that turned out.
/u/dredmorbius (see also https://mastodon.cloud/@dredmorbius) was a frequent correspondent about epistemic systems there, and kindly invited me to Tildes. I've been here since July, 2018, and it's been a fabulous place to meet people for civil discourse.
The science fiction novel A Door Into Ocean has a culture where people name themselves after the negative character trait they'd most like to change. It's a mark of honor in society to succeed in outgrowing your name. I'm still (patiently?) working on it.
We've already got ~misc. Seriously, one of the most difficult tasks I have here is correctly assigning the interesting (to me) stuff and questions I dredge up that span a half-dozen categories. 1. Who or what brought you to Tildes?
I think I hit the random button on the Reddit homepage and ended up on the Tildes subreddit. From there, I saw I missed out on an invite wave and directly emailed deimos with my personal email and name, included a little 'About Me', and asked for a code. My motivations are that I am tired of reading and being a part of the collective reddit consciousness. When you read a comment chain on reddit, unless you are in a small community, you don't see a back and forth conversation between people. Instead you see a top level comment, then someone's reply, then another person's reply, and then another random person's reply, and so forth until there isn't any real meaning to the conversation.
The promise of good, high-quality discussion is tempting for me and the future plans for tildes leaves me hopeful. I hope the trust system comes out sooner rather than later and the site culture matures as a result of it.
2. What's the inspiration behind your username?
I think I had a copy of Kid Icarus for the 3DS near me and just used that. My username isn't tied to any part of "me". Makes it easier to let it go when the time for a new account rolls around.
3. If you could add a group to Tildes to reflect your interests, which one would you choose and why?
I would add a group called ~compassion.
One of my favorite subreddits is /r/wholesomememes and I think having a dedicated space where people are nice to each other would be...nice. Don't get me wrong, Tildes is a step up from Reddit in a lot of ways. In other ways though, comment chains are overly pedantic and don't discuss the topic but rather an author's choice of words. Sometimes responses to comments here are overly critical or judgmental of other users.
If I had a vision for the site culture, it would be a kind college professor. Knowledgeable but forgiving of mistakes. Open to learning new things, hearing and sharing perspective, and understanding that there isn't always a correct answer.
I commented on a thread about reddit on Hacker News and I got a smart reply from Deimos. Thought the name looked familiar, checked out his profile, yada yada yada. I haven't deleted my reddit account as I still find the site to be very useful, but I have been disillusioned with the community since day one (12+ years ago?) and with the administration for the past five years or so. I haven't deleted an account on anything since Myspace but I have definitely stopped using a bunch of websites and hope that reddit can be among them one day.
Like a few others here, it's based on my first and last name and I have used it wherever possible for the last 15 years or so. Unfortunately it seems to be popular so sometimes it's taken and I have to mix it up; I'm a bit jealous of those who have "universal" web names but I guess I've bought myself some plausible deniability so it's not the worst.
A ~policy group would be nice. I was considering if it should be a group with subgroups in every domain - education, housing, health, tech, etc. - or if there should just be supgroups under each area e.g. ~education.policy. There are definitely articles or points of discussion that cut across policy interest areas, though, so I think it could merit a group of its own. And who the hell is just going to be hanging out in the theoretical ~housing looking for policy articles, anyway?
As a side note, if anyone here works in tech policy or has a serious interest in the field, please reach out! I'm just now starting to get involved in the space and would love to make some friends with the same interest.

Decided on a whim to use this user handle, I use other aliases elsewhere. It's sort of a joke, based on a question you commonly get asked by hairdressers (in my country at least)

I am a German, born to Turkish parents. I am currently doing my compsci masters (first in my family to do so)

My masters is very focused on AI, which I really enjoy and I guess I'll try to do professionally, unless developing apps in the afternoon and surfing in the morning doesn't work out.

I lived in Australia for a year, backpacking and working, and I spent half a year in the US for an internship.
Especially living in Australia for a year after my high school was a very defining time for me and influenced a lot of my choices in life.

This isn't a guess so much as it is my association whenever I see your username, but Regina Spektor has a song called "Wallet" about finding a lost wallet and speculating on the identity of the person it belongs to. Your username always makes me think of that particular song, but like, if there were a different version of it where she finds an overtly gay wallet. You know, one with rainbows on the outside or a cute gay couple's photos on the inside.

Not bad. I'm a returning student of computer science, hoping to get my first proper job out of it. I found this place through Reddit, and it's certainly a nicer alternative. I don't often contribute because I don't have much to say.
I chose a username that was similar to previous usernames and pleasant to think about. I like fish fingers, especially hot with Ketchup, Tabasco and chips.
I would probably add a model-painting group because I really like the idea of starting a collection of little tank models. Sadly it's prohibitively expensive for now.

I was getting sick of spending so much time on reddit, but knew I couldn't just put my phone down completely, so I googled for an alternative and found Tildes. I eventually quit reddit completely for about 1 month and a half, but got back into it when I became unemployed. I found a new job now but have yet to again quit reddit.
What's the inspiration behind your username?
I had recently watched Twin Peaks The Return, and learned about tulpas. Theyre a Buddhist spirit, that can be willed into existence by intense focused meditiation. Essentially an imaginary friend, or enemy or whatever. I thought a willed Wendigo would be a cool interplay of the 2 things.

I'd love if Tildes had a group dedicated to 3D sculpting and was active. ZBrush and stuff like that.

I don't remember how I found Tildes, but I remember enjoying the conversation and the design of the site.
First letter of my first name, then my full last name. I have this username on various other websites.
Nothing is coming to mind right now. I'm quite fond of programming and of environmental science, and there appear to be Tildes for those.
BTW this should be turned into a recurring thread. I wonder how often though. Every 3 or 4 months maybe?
I don't think I'd be inclined to respond more than once; these intro threads could get quite long and echo-ey.

I don't recall where I came across Tildes; probably either Hacker News (where I almost never enter the comments, because they're exhausting), Lobste.rs (where I don't have an account) or Twitter. The fact that the UI is small and fast and snappy appealed to me, and the community didn't seem toxic yet, so I thought I'd join in and see how long that lasts.
My username is my real first name. That name was originally my middle name; my parents gave me a first name that literally translates to "man", and a middle name that they mistakenly thought was the more-commonly-masculine spelling (which is actually "Lee"). Since I turned out to not be a man after all, it worked out well in the end anyway. I'd considered others, but Leigh felt like it was already me, and while it's not the coolest name out there (you can almost always tell when someone is transgender, because we generally have way cooler names than cis folks) I didn't find anything else that fit.
I honestly don't have a good answer for the last one. My interests in things like tech and games are generally slightly different to what typically gets posted in generalist spaces on those topics, but I'm not sure how to draw a line around it and give it a name.

Deimos's Reddit account led me to tildes in a creepy way. I was stalking his Reddit account for some info about a project he did, and found posts talking about this site. The more I read, the more I felt it was the perfect website. Centralized, free software license (AGPL3) with a solid, acceptable free speech philosophy (don't be an asshole, with a definition of what constitutes an asshole). I emailed the appropriate tildes.net address as soon as I finished reading the documentation. Got led in, and frankly have valued every second spent here.
As far as centralization, I basically didn't understand how federation worked, and still see the fediverse as hard to make a mass market thing, but see value in a donation-driven website that is run and developed by it's users, as opposed to a profit-driven closed platform. I think the licensing of the platform is more important than any protocol because with social media the site matters more. Just look at Mastodon.social.
My username was an uncreative tweak on "Loch Ness Monster." It's a less used name, and I played a lot of TF2 when I coined the handle, and frankly like it, so I use it or a variation for anything that isn't a brand I release creative works under.
